Republicans afrm anti-gay

views in platform, speeches

TAMPA, Fla. The Republican Party
this week ofcially nominated former
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as its
candidate for president at a convention
delayed by the arrival of Hurricane Isaac
and punctuated by anti-gay platform
language and speeches.
(The Blade has had staff in Tampa all
week; visit washingtonblade.com for
complete coverage of Mitt Romneys
Thursday acceptance speech and all
related developments this week.)
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who
chaired the Republican Party platform
committee, touted the marriage language
in the manifesto which endorses a U.S.
constitutional amendment banning same-
sex marriage throughout the country in
addition to backing other conservative
policies like making abortion illegal.
This platform afrms the traditional
meaning of marriage and the sanctity of
human life, defends religious freedom
and Second Amendment rights and calls
for a balanced budget amendment,
McDonnell said.
Speakers at the Republican National
Convention hammered President Obama
for what they said were failed economic
policies while largely staying away from
social or LGBT issues although marriage
was a cornerstone in a high-prole speech
by former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.
The former Republican presidential
candidate talked about running for the
White House and shaking hands with
people from many walks of life as he

17 LGBT delegates from
region headed to Dem
convention
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS

As Democrats prepare for their partys
upcoming convention in Charlotte, local
LGBT delegates stress they look forward
to representing the community at the
quadrennial gathering.
Im excited to be going to the
convention and Im honored to represent
D.C. in Charlotte, said Lateefah
Williams, president of the Gertrude
Stein Democratic Club. She is among
the four openly LGBT delegates who
will represent the nations capital at the
Democratic National Convention that
will kick-off on Sept. 4. Gay labor activist
Gregory Cendana is among them, while
Democratic activist David Meadows
will serve as an alternate. My goal is to
provide a voice for all D.C. residents,
particularly the LGBT community.
Jeffrey Richardson, director of the
Mayors Ofce of GLBT Affairs and the
former vice chair of the D.C. Democratic
Party, has attended two previous
conventions as either a delegate or a
volunteer. He told the Blade that this
year is different in part because the
presumptive nominee is the incumbent
president.
Well be focused on how we will unite
the party, unite the base to ensure that
President Obama gets re-elected, said
Richardson.
Earl Fowlkes, CEO of D.C. Black
Pride and a member of the Democratic
National Committee, will attend his rst
convention as a delegate. Im glad Im
going with all these people from D.C.,
which is wonderful, he said. Im really
very happy because this administration,
this president has been so forthright in his
skill in really creating a better environment

Corkins faces 3 charges,
decades in prison
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, a former part-
time volunteer for D.C.s LGBT community
center, pleaded not guilty in federal court
last week to three charges related to the
recent shooting at the downtown D.C.
headquarters of the Family Research
Council, one of the nations leading anti-
gay groups.
The not-guilty plea came after Corkins
attorney disclosed at an arraignment
in U.S. District Court for the District of
Columbia that a psychiatric evaluation
found Corkins competent to stand trial.
A spokesperson for the United States
Attorneys ofce, which is prosecuting the
case, said the psychiatric evaluation, other
than its nding that Corkins is competent to
stand trial, would not be publicly released.
Wearing an orange prison jump suit,
Corkins replied by saying yes when
asked by Judge Magistrate Alan Kay if he
understood that a federal grand jury on
Wednesday indicted him on three charges
related to the governments allegation
that he shot a security guard in the arm
on Aug. 15 after entering the lobby of the
Family Research Council building at 801 G
Street, N.W.
Defense attorney David Bos told Kay
that Corkins would waive his right to both
a preliminary and detention hearing,
eliminating the need for prosecutors
to present evidence in court to show
probable cause that Corkins committed
the shooting and would be a danger to
the community if released from custody.
Kay, who then converted the court
proceeding into an arraignment, ordered
Corkins held in jail pending a status
hearing Kay scheduled for Oct. 1. Corkins
has been in custody since the time he was
apprehended on Aug. 15.
Kay also announced that U.S. District
Court Judge Richard Roberts would
take over the case following Fridays
arraignment.
Corkins decision to waive the
preliminary and detention hearings
made it unnecessary for prosecutors
to present evidence at this time about
Corkins motives and information about
his background, continuing the mystery
surrounding the Herndon, Va., resident.
The Grand Jury indictment came one
week after D.C. police and FBI agents
apprehended Corkins minutes after
he allegedly walked into the lobby of
the FRC building and told FRC security
ofcer Leo Johnson I dont like your
politics before ring a handgun and
hitting Johnson in the arm, according to
an arrest afdavit led in court.
Johnson and other security ofcials
wrestled the gun away from him and
subdued him, the afdavit says. Johnson
is expected to fully recover from his injury
related to the shooting.
D.C. police and FBI ofcials said the
discovery of 50 rounds of ammunition
and 15 Chick-l-A sandwiches in a
backpack Corkins brought to the FRC
building led them to believe he may
have planned a mass killing if Johnson
had not prevented him from gaining
access to the FRC ofces.
The grand jury indictment charges
Corkins with the federal offense of
interstate transportation of a re arm and
ammunition and with the D.C. offenses of
assault with intent to kill while armed and
possession of a rearm during a crime of
violence.
The federal charge could lead to a
maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
The charge of assault with intent to kill
while arm carries a mandatory minimum
sentence of ve years in prison and a
maximum sentence of 30 years. The
charge of possession of a rearm during
a crime of violence calls for a mandatory
minimum sentence of ve years in jail and
a maximum sentence of 15 years.

N.Y. event planned for

By MICHAEL K. LAVERS

Former Republican National Committee
Chair Ken Mehlman is among those who
will co-host a New York City fundraiser
next month for the group defending
Marylands same-sex marriage law.
Gov. Martin OMalley is scheduled to
speak at the Marylanders for Marriage
Equality event that will take place at the
James Hotel in lower Manhattan on Sept.
13. Gay director John Waters, who is
from Baltimore, is on the host committee
alongside Mehlman, actor Josh Charles,
supermodel Hilary Rhoda and other native
Marylanders. Comedian Sandra Bernhard,
actresses Julianne Moore and Sarah
Jessica Parker, hip-hop mogul Russell
Simmons, Bravos Andy Cohen and former
New York Rangers forward Sean Avery are
among the other co-hosts.
Tickets range from $250 $25,000.
Were excited to be putting together
this event, and thankful that so many have
volunteered to serve as hosts, Josh Levin,
campaign director for Marylanders for
Marriage Equality, told the Blade. Voters
in Maryland know that this vote will be
about treating everyone fairly and equally
under the law, and just like the hundreds
of volunteers who joined us to knock on
doors this weekend, these supporters will
help us get the word out.
Avery, who appeared in a campaign
last year that featured prominent
New Yorkers who support same-sex
marriage, stressed that he feels he and
others who back the issue are ghting
the same ght. Gays and lesbians
began to legally marry in the Empire
State in July 2011 after Gov. Andrew
Cuomo signed New Yorks same-sex
marriage bill into law.
We started in New York and a lot of
us live here who are involved in this, but
its really a nationwide issue and a bigger
global issue, Avery told the Blade.
Mehlman was not immediately available
for comment because he is out of the
country. Brian Ellner, who directed the
Human Rights Campaigns efforts in
support of New Yorks same-sex marriage
bill, told the Blade that those behind the
Sept. 13 fundraiser are deeply committed
to defending Maryland and Washingtons
same-sex marriage laws in November.
He further stressed they remain steadfast
supporters of efforts to allow gays and
lesbians to legally marry in Maine and
continue to ght against a proposed
constitutional amendment that would
dene marriage in Minnesota as between
a man and a woman.
New Yorkers stepped up big to
support equality here last year and we are
also getting behind these four November
referenda, said Ellner. Now is the time
to start winning these ballot questions. I
know we will.
The New York City fundraiser is slated to
take place ve weeks after HRC pledged
$250,000 to Marylanders for Marriage
Equality as part of an additional $1 million
to support same-sex marriage efforts in
Maryland, Washington, Minnesota and
Maine. This donation comes on top of the
$728,000 in cash and in-kind contributions
that HRC has given to Marylanders
for Marriage Equality and $853,000 it
contributed to the legislative campaign
to secure passage of the states same-sex
marriage law earlier this year.
Freedom to Marry announced earlier
this month that its contributions to
statewide ballot measures in Maine,
Minnesota and Washington have topped
$3 million. The organization hopes to
raise an additional $10 million for these
campaigns but has said it will largely skip
the Maryland ght.
Maryland activists have privately
complained about the snub, but Evan
Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry,
said his group has provided a huge
amount of messaging, research and
experience and council to Marylanders
for Marriage Equality.
Freedom to Marry is providing
assistance to the campaign in Maryland in
a number of ways and is looking constantly
for ways we can be helpful, he said. At
the same time we have also taken the
lead as the primary out of state funder
and supporter in three of the four ballot
measures and look to other organizations
most notably HRC to take a similar
role and lead in Maryland, even as we
continue to look for ways for advancing
the cause across the board.

Die fag scraped onto car
owned by gay student

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Jordan Addison, 21, a second-year
student at Virginias Radford University, said
he became alarmed and discouraged when
unidentied vandals defaced his car with an
anti-gay slur, smashed the windshield, and
slashed two tires in four separate incidents
between March and May.
The rst incident occurred late at night
when his car was parked in front of his
parents mountainside house in the rural
town of Max Meadows, located about 60
miles southwest of Roanoke.
The other three incidents occurred
while his car was in the parking lot outside
his dorm on the Radford campus, which is
located about 30 miles west of Roanoke.
We have no idea who could have done
it, Addison told the Blade.
While the identity of the vandals remains
a mystery, he said hes certain he was
targeted because hes an out gay man.
Addison said he became even more
discouraged when auto body shops near
his parents home and near the college told
him it would cost as much as $3,000 or more
to remove the words fag die that one or
more vandals scraped into the drivers side
door of his 1999 Volkswagen Passat.
I actually called one place and I said I
need to get my door repainted, Addison
told the Blade. And he said, oh, that will
be about $600. And then I showed up and
his estimate went up to a little over $3,000.
Addison said his parents, fellow
students, and faculty members chipped
in to help cover the costs of replacing
the shattered front windshield and two
slashed tires. But he said the high cost of
having the fag die slur removed from
the side of the car was more than he could
afford. His insurance policy didnt include
a comprehensive provision needed to
cover that type of damage.
So I was in the middle of dont go back
to class and dont drive your car or drive
your car back, with the slur visible for
everyone to see, and go to class and keep
your grades up. And thats what I chose.
In a turn of events that Addison describes
as astonishing and heartwarming, an auto
body shop manager in Roanoke named
Richard J.R. Henegar Jr., who learned
about Addisons plight from a friend who
works at Radford University, took action on
Addisons behalf.
A Navy veteran whos straight and married,
Henegar summoned Addison to bring the
car to Quality Auto Paint and Body Shop in
Roanoke, which is owned by Henegars father.
At his own expense, Henegar obtained a
rental car for Addisons use while he said he
would arrange to remove the anti-gay slur
from the side of the car.
I saw his car and I said this is uncalled
for and Im going to take care of your car,
Henegar told the Blade.
Without telling Addison, Henegar
contacted 10 other businesses, most
auto body shops in the Roanoke area,
and persuaded them to share the costs
and provide parts needed to do a major
overhaul of the car in addition to removing
the slur etched into the paint.
Among other things, Henegar had the
entire car repainted, installed new tires,
tinted windows, a new security alarm
system and a new stereo. He said the
total cost came to more than $10,000
and involved at least 100 hours of labor,
which he said he and the other businesses
that helped him performed after regular
business hours and on weekends.
When the work was nished Henegar
arranged for a local vendor to screen print
T-shirts with an anti-bullying message that
he modeled after the logo of an anti-
bullying organization he discovered online.
I told him about the story and he didnt
charge me a dime, Henegar said of the T-shirt
vendor. He had all the T-shirts printed. There
was a big circle with a line through it that said
bullies. On the back it said special thanks to all
our vendors and it had a list of the vendors.
Henegar then invited one of the local TV
news stations to come to his shop to cover what
he said would be Addisons homecoming
his shops ofcial presentation of the
completed car to Addison, who knew nothing
of what was about to happen.
He just completely blew my mind,
said Addison in describing his emotions
when he and his partner arrived at the
shop and discovered the overhauled car.
He breaks so many stereotypes
because hes a straight guy but hes
helping me out and Im a gay male,
Addison said. He has tattoos everywhere
but hes like a science nerd and hes such
a sweet person. It blows my mind that
people like him live where Im from.
Addison added, Hes just so kind
and brave and put so much work into
something for someone hed never met.

Coalition of LGBT, Latino
groups collaborate on
initiatives
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
A coalition of LGBT and Latino advocacy
organizations on Tuesday formally
unveiled a new campaign designed to
garner additional support for Marylands
same-sex marriage law and in-state tuition
for undocumented immigrants.
Through the Familia es Familia
Maryland initiative, CASA de Maryland
and the Latino GLBT History Project
will continue to work with LGBT Latinos
and their families to publicly talk about
nuptials for gays and lesbians ahead of
the November referendum on the states
same-sex marriage law. Equality Maryland
will seek undocumented LGBT immigrants
to discuss the states Dream Act, which is
also on the ballot as Question 4, with gay
and lesbian Marylanders.
For all those who work on achieving
equality for LGBT Marylanders, it is
imperative that we work for all LGBT
Marylanders, including those who are
undocumented, said Carrie Evans,
executive director of Equality Maryland,
during a press conference at CASA de
Marylands ofces in Hyattsville. We must
speak up for what is right and what is fair.
Montgomery County Council member
Nancy Navarro referenced her gay
younger brother Pedro, who came out to
her and her sister 17 years ago.
I am here for my brother Pedro
and for all the brothers and sisters, the
daughters, the sons, the cousins, the
uncles, the aunts, everybody who we
call family. I am here to urge our Latino
community to never forget that, she said.
We have an opportunity to stand up
and give a gift the gift of dignity and
pride and respect and civility to our loved
ones. So I am here, very proud to support
marriage equality, very proud to stand up
for Question 6.
Gay state Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County) shared a similar
message as he stood alongside Navarro,
lesbian state Del. Anne Kaiser (D-Montgomery
County) and other advocates.
This November, we have a big
opportunity as voters in the state of Maryland
to truly embrace the future of our state, to
understand where we are going, to make
sure that every family has a chance to have
equality under the law and that every young
person who were educating has a chance to
realize their dreams, he said. We have an
opportunity to embrace a future that means
respect and dignity for all families. We have
an opportunity to embrace a future that
says every person has a responsibility and
opportunity to get an education.
A Gonzales Research and Marketing
poll in January found that 48 percent of
Marylanders support the states Dream
Act, while a Hart Research Associates
survey last month shows that 54 percent
of Marylanders would vote for the same-
sex marriage law in November. An Arcus
Foundation-funded survey that the
National Council of La Raza and Social
Science Research Solutions commissioned
in April indicates that 54 percent of Latinos
support nuptials for gays and lesbians.
Ivette Roman came to the United States
from Per with her brother when she was
10. The Silver Spring resident said she
planned to go to college after graduating
from Northwood High School last year, but
could not afford it because her immigration
status prevented her from receiving
nancial aid. Roman, 20, also noted that
her mother did not speak to her for months
after she came out to her as a lesbian.
She asked me to forgive her, she said,
referring to how her mother eventually
came to accept her sexual orientation.
From that day on, she was going to
support me in all the decisions I made,
no matter what they were. Thats why Im
here today, trying to change and ght for
my future and many other undocumented
LGBT students to have the same rights as
any other Marylander. And I am here to
encourage the LGBT community to stand
with me as I pursue my dream.

Nearly 500 openly gay,
trans reps expected in
Charlotte
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The upcoming Democratic National
Convention is set to have a record number
of openly LGBT delegates, although
goals for some states arent being met,
according to new data from the National
Stonewall Democrats.
The organization identied at least
470 openly LGBT delegates that are set
to attend the convention, but more data
is expected to become public shortly. A
total of 5,963 delegates are set to come to
Charlotte, N.C., for the event next week.
Having 470 delegates exceeds the goal
of 418 delegates at the convention and is
already higher than numbers from 2008,
when 277 delegates participated.
Jerame Davis, executive director of
the National Stonewall Democrats, said
the numbers for sure mean Democrats
are on track to have the highest number
of openly LGBT delegates ever at the
convention.
Were nally getting to the point where
we get closer to appropriate measure
of representation as compared to the
population at large, although were not
quite to that point, Davis said.
Davis said the goals for LGBT delegates
were set by the state Democratic parties
as part of their afrmative action plans
for the convention, but these goals had
to meet the approval of the Democratic
National Committee.
Additionally, Davis has identied a
total of 518 ofcial LGBT participants
at the convention. In addition to the
470 identied LGBT delegates, these
participants include 23 alternate
delegates, 20 standing committee
members and ve pages. Thats also
higher than the 365 LGBT participants who
went to the 2008 convention in Denver
and the 282 LGBT participants who went
to the 2004 convention in Boston. Davis
said he expects a record number of
transgender delegates at the convention.
Eleven openly trans delegates are slated
to attend.
The numbers arent ofcial and the
DNC has yet to make public the nal
numbers. Davis said he isnt sure when the
ofcial numbers will be made public, but
they are expected to come out before the
convention. The DNC didnt respond to a
request for comment on when the ofcial
information will be released.
Stonewall obtained complete data
on LGBT delegates from 52 of the 56
jurisdictions that are participating in the
convention, which includes all 50 states,
D.C., territories like Puerto Rico and Guam
as well as Democrats abroad. The nal
numbers could be higher because two
states for which Stonewall has incomplete
data are California and New York which
are expected to bring in many delegates,
including many LGBT delegates. The
two outstanding non-state jurisdictions
are American Samoa and the Virgin
Islands.
All 50 states and D.C. set a numerical
goal for LGBT delegates at the
convention, which is as low as one
in ve states Mississippi, North
Dakota, South Dakota, West Virginia
and Wyoming and as high as 74 for
California. Its the rst year each state
has set a numerical goal to send at
least one LGBT delegate. Davis said
each state for the rst time will send at
least one openly LGBT delegate to the
convention and this year marks the rst
time Mississippi, Arkansas and Alaska
will send openly LGBT delegates to the
convention.
But not all of these jurisdictions are
meeting their goals for LGBT delegates.
According to Stonewalls data, 37 have
met or exceeded goals while 16 have
fallen short of them.
The 16 jurisdictions that have missed
their goals are Alabama by one, Alaska
by two, California by seven, D.C. by
one, Florida by 10, Georgia by one, Idaho
by two, Indiana by two, Kansas by two,
Massachusetts by one, and Missouri by
four, Montana by one, Pennsylvania by
one, Texas by one, Vermont by one and
Virginia by six. But Alabama, Florida,
Indiana, Massachusetts and Texas were
able to make up their decits through
non-delegate LGBT participants.
Tyler Clementis parents speak out
RIDGEWOOD, N.J. Following their sons suicide, the parents of gay Rutgers
University freshman Tyler Clementi shied from the spotlight, but now Joe and
Jane Clementi have broken their silence in an extensive New York Times interview.
In the interview, they revealed information about their last conversations with
their son, how they reacted to his coming out to them as gay and how they
feel the anti-gay teachings of the evangelical church they attended affected his
psychological state, a revelation that prompted her to leave her church.
I think some people think that sexual orientation can be changed or prayed
over, she told the Times. But I know sexual orientation is not up for negotiation.
I dont think my children need to be changed. I think that what needed changing
is attitudes, or myself, or maybe some other people I know.
Jane Clementi also spoke of the last conversation she had with her young son
before he jumped from the George Washington Bridge where he declined to
have his parents bring his beloved bike to campus for him, because, she believes,
he had already made the decision to end his life.
La. lawmaker calls for end to LGBT classes
BATON ROUGE Louisiana congressman Jeff Landry has called for the
University of Louisiana to cease offering classes in its LGBT studies minor in a
letter to the schools president.
Landrys call for the university to cease offering LGBT history classes comes at a
time when his primary against fellow incumbent Republican Charles Boustany has
become more contentious. The effort is backed by the Louisiana Family Forum,
which contends the university is not warning students of the medical, physical,
emotional and dangers of a lifestyle, which is counter to Louisiana values,
according to the Times-Picayune.
The universitys president, Joseph Savoie responded that allowing political
pressure to dictate course selections could endanger the schools accreditation.
Biden praises LGBT Americans in P-Town
PROVINCETOWN, Mass. Vice President Joe Biden told a crowd gathered at
a Provincetown, Mass. campaign stop that LGBT Americans are freeing the souls
of the American People.
Biden, who visited the prominent gay resort town and spoke at the base of the Pilgrim
Monument and Museum, also said that gay activists arent just ghting for their own civil
rights, but also the civil rights of every straight American, reported Politico.
Politico also noted that the vice presidents own rst public statement of support
for same-sex marriage this spring directly inuenced President Obama to come
out in support for extending marriage rights to same-sex couples several days
later, and may have played a role in the inclusion of support for same-sex marriage
rights in the 2012 Democratic platform.

Top Marine: Gay service
members a non-issue
The head of the U.S. Marine Corps on
Tuesday stressed that the integration of
open gays and lesbians into the military
has gone smoothly.
I dont think there is a problem,
said Commandant Gen. James Amos
during a National Press Club luncheon in
downtown Washington. I dont see it. I
dont hear about it.
Amos comments come nearly a
year after the repeal of the Pentagons
ban on openly gay and lesbian service
members ofcially took effect. He told
the Senate Armed Services Committee
during his 2010 conrmation hearing
that he opposed the repeal of Dont
Ask, Dont Tell. LGBT rights groups
later blasted Amos for suggesting that
openly gay and lesbian servicemembers
would prove a distraction that would
lead to further loses on the battleeld.
He stressed, however, that the Marines
would implement the policy if ordered
to do so.
We obey orders, said Amos. We do
that better than anybody does and we
have.
He again noted that he doesnt
even get a question about openly
gay and lesbian service members from
subordinates and other Marines.
I dont hear anything, said Amos.
Im not seeing anything at all, so Im very
pleased with how its turned out. Im very
proud of the Marines.
Zeke Stokes of the Servicemembers
Legal Defense Network welcomed Amos
comments.
It was gratifying to hear General Amos
once again afrm his view that the repeal
of Dont Ask, Dont Tell has proceeded
smoothly, he told the Blade.

Will Obama campaign
with Tammy Baldwin?
White House Press Secretary Jay
Carney was unable to say last week
whether President Obama would make a
campaign appearance with lesbian U.S.
Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin to assist
in her bid to become the rst openly gay
person elected to the U.S. Senate.
Carney said he had no campaign
announcements when asked by the
Washington Blade whether Obama would
travel to Wisconsin to campaign with
Baldwin, whos running against Republican
candidate Tommy Thompson to replace
retiring Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.).
I have no campaign announcements,
scheduling announcements to make on
behalf of the president, Carney said.
The president himself has an election as
you know in a few short months. But I have
no campaign announcements to make.
Under further questioning, Carney
acknowledged that Baldwins campaign
is signicant in terms of the expertise the
seven-term congresswoman would bring
to the U.S. Senate.
I think its very signicant, Carney
said. I think what is most signicant is
that someone qualied like Ms. Baldwin is
running for that ofce and would make an
excellent senator if elected.
Baldwin appears to be facing a tough
battle in her race against Thompson
because recent polls give him a lead. A
poll from Marquette University Law School
published last week found Thompson
leading Baldwin 50-41, while a Public
Policy Poll gave Thompson a 49-44 lead.
Its not unprecedented for Obama to
campaign with Democratic candidates
who are in tight races. In 2010, among
the Democratic incumbents with whom
Obama campaigned was former Rep.
Tom Perriello, who had voted for health
care reform legislation even though
he represented a conservative district
in Virginia. Perriello ultimately lost the
election, but only by a margin of four
points against Republican Robert Hurt.
Perriello now serves as president of the
Center for American Progress Action
Fund.
On the same day as Carneys remarks,
the lesbian political action committee
LPAC announced it had donated
$112,000 to Baldwins effort through
the WISCONSIN WOMEN VOTE!
independent expenditure campaign,
which will assist in buying air time for a TV
ad depicting Thompson as a D.C. insider.
LPAC had previously announced its own
initiative in which it would match donations
up to $50,000 to Baldwins campaign.
Tammy Baldwin embodies everything
LPAC stands for, said LPAC Chair Sarah
Schmidt. She has a history of protecting
womens rights and expanding issues of
social justice. Rep. Baldwin is a staunch
advocate for reproductive rights and
wrote bills to expand both breast cancer
screenings and hate crime laws, as well
as measures to eliminate workplace
discrimination.

Homocon party features
male dancers, tribute
TAMPA, Fla. A party hosted
on Tuesday night by a national gay
conservative group struck a different
tone than other LGBT events during
the Republican National Convention
as male dancers performed onstage
and calls for equal rights were brushed
to the side.
GOProud hosted its annual Homocon
party for gay conservatives at The Honey
Pot, drawing not only gay Republicans
attending the convention, but also
reporters and others seeking a break after
the days ofcial events concluded.
Jimmy LaSalvia, executive director of
GOProud, emphasized during his remarks
that even gay voters see the economy as
the No. 1 issue, although activists would
have others think LGBT rights are their
priority.
Marriage is important, but before
you get married you have to get a date,
and you cant get a date without a job,
LaSalvia said.
Muscled bartenders wearing
black T-shirts that read, Freedom is
Fabulous: GOProud, served cocktails
to attendees. The dancers onstage
wore sleeveless versions of the same
shirts. Songs that blared on the speakers
included LMFAOs Im Sexy and I Know
It, Kelly Clarksons Stronger and Katy
Perrys Teenage Dream.
Chris Barron, chief strategist at
GOProud, dedicated a signicant portion
of his remarks to the late Andrew Breitbart,
a controversial conservative pundit who
in addition to serving on GOProuds
advisory council played a role in the
resignations of Agriculture Department
ofcial Shirley Sherrod and former Rep.
Anthony Weiner. Breitbart died in March
of heart failure.
For most of my life in politics, I was
constantly told, You cant say that. You
cant do that. You might offend someone.
What will people think? Barron said.
And, of course, my favorite: Thats just
not the way we do things. Well then,
along came Andrew Breitbart. Brietbart
did it his way.
During his remarks, LaSalvia said
Homocon drew more attendees than
other gay events at any Republican
convention and noted that GOProud
is the only national gay organization
to endorse Mitt Romney for president
thinly veiled digs at the Log Cabin
Republicans, which is hosting events
in Tampa this week and hasnt yet
announced an endorsement decision.
Barron later told the Washington Blade
that almost 1,000 people attended
the party, although the number inside
seemed smaller.
Richard Grenell, a gay former
Bush administration ofcial at the
United Nations and briey a foreign
policy spokesperson for the Romney
campaign, told the Blade at the event
he thinks the GOProud event wasnt
intended to serve a political purpose
because of the many kinds of people it
attracted.
I dont think its really political in that
there are a lot of reporters here, there
are a lot of Republican activists here,
and there are a lot of young people,
Grenell said. Its clearly the future of the
Republican Party.

criticized Obama even misrepresenting
the president by saying he was waiving
the work requirement for welfare.
Santorum devoted a signicant portion
of his speech to what he said was the
decline of the institution of marriage.
The fact is that marriage is
disappearing in places where
government dependency is highest,
Santorum said. Most single mothers do
heroic work and an amazing job raising
their children, but if America is going to
succeed, we must stop the assault on
marriage and the family.
Santorum never explicitly mentioned
same-sex marriage during his speech,
although the Republican has a history of
vocal opposition to LGBT rights. Still, the
former senator said President Obama,
who in May endorsed marriage equality,
has enacted policies that undermine the
traditional family.
Additionally, Santorum criticized
the Obama administration for
immigration policy, saying with his
refusal to enforce our immigration
laws, President Obama rules like
he is above the law. The criticism
could be a reference to many actions
the administration has taken
including providing certain young,
undocumented immigrants with
deferred action on deportation
but also could be a reference to the
Department of Homeland Securitys
decision to consider undocumented
immigrants a low priority for removal
if theyre in a same-sex marriage.
Jerame Davis, executive director of
the National Stonewall Democrats, said
Santorums remarks on marriage shouldnt
be a surprise given that delegates at the
convention earlier in the day approved
a party platform including anti-gay
language.
Earlier today, delegates at the
Republican convention enthusiastically
voted in favor of the most anti-LGBT
platform ever adopted by a political
party, Davis said. It was a low point
for the party and our country. It came as
no surprise, then, to hear Rick Santorum
lecturing delegates and the American
people on traditional families during the
primetime speeches tonight.
Delegates at the convention ofcially
threw their support behind Romney,
making him the partys nominee in the race
for the White House, in addition to giving
nal approval to the 2012 platform. During
the roll call of the states and jurisdictions
that sent delegates to the convention,
Romney received the backing of the 2,061
delegates, well over the 1,144-delegate
threshold needed for him to claim the
nomination.
But Romney was unable to secure all
the delegates at the convention. More
than 100 delegates pledged to libertarian
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) wouldnt give up
backing of their candidate. A handful of
delegates also went to Santorum, who
gave Romney the greatest challenge for
the Republican nomination during the
presidential primary.
The woman reading the delegate
contributions from the states would only
say the number allocated to Romney
without recognizing other candidates,
much to the consternation of Paul
supporters, who heckled her for not
recognizing him. According to media
reports, Paul was present on the oor
when the roll call was being recorded as
supporters shouted Let him speak!
The most well-received speech likely
came from Romneys wife, Ann Romney,
who delivered personal remarks about
starting a family together with the
Republican presidential nominee at an
early age and his experience starting Bain
Capital, running the Winter Olympics in
Salt Lake City and serving as governor of
Massachusetts.
But because this is America, that
small company which grew has helped
so many others lead better lives, Ann
Romney said. The jobs that grew from
the risks they took have become college
educations, rst homes. That success
has helped fund scholarships, pensions
and retirement funds. This is the genius
of America: dreams fullled help others
launch new dreams.
Delivering the keynote address for
the Republican National Convention
was New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie,
who was widely considered a possibility
as Romneys running mate before the
selection of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).
Christie vetoed same-sex marriage
legislation earlier this year.
In his speech, Christie talked about
enacting scally conservative policies
in a blue state that he said will result
in New Jersey saving $132 billion in
taxpayer dollars over the next 30 years
a bipartisan effort that the governor said
could be duplicated in the White House
and Congress.
The disciples of yesterdays politics
underestimated the will of the people,
Christie said. They assumed our people
were selsh; that when told of the difcult
problems, tough choices and complicated
solutions, they would simply turn their
backs, that they would decide it was every
man for himself. Instead, the people of
New Jersey stepped up and shared in the
sacrice.
Traditional marriage will win
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), a two-
term congressman and rising star in the
Republican Party, told the Washington
Blade at the convention he believes
forces opposed to marriage equality will
succeed after he was informed the issue
will appear on the ballot this fall in four
states: Minnesota, Maine, Maryland and
Washington State.
Thats good, Chaffetz said.
Traditional marriage Im sure will win. It
has, I think, 30 times in a row, now, so thats
a pretty good record.
While efforts to pass constitutional
amendments against same-sex marriage
have succeeded in each of the 30 states
where the issue has come before voters,
Chaffetz may be wrong in his prediction
because polls show public opinion is
changing. For example, a poll from
MassINC Polling Group and WBUR in
June found that 55 percent of Maine
residents support the marriage equality
ballot initiative as written, while only 36
percent are opposed to it.
Additionally, Chaffetz expressed
support for the anti-gay marriage language
in the draft version of the Republican Party
platform. The document was recently
revealed to include language that limits
marriage to one man, one woman; attacks
the Obama administration for failing to
defend the Defense of Marriage Act;
criticizes judges who rule in favor of
marriage equality; and endorses a Federal
Marriage Amendment.
Asked whether he supports the
language, Chaffetz replied, Im
supportive of the platform. When
further pressed on whether he, in
fact, supports a U.S. constitutional
amendment ending same-sex marriage
throughout the country, Chaffetz said, I
support that.
The lawmaker spoke with the Blade in
the Tampa Convention Center following
a speech he delivered on the oor calling
for the election of Republican presidential
nominee Mitt Romney and greater scal
discipline in government.
LGBT contingent joins protest
A major demonstration on the rst day
of the convention included a handful of
LGBT protesters who assailed the GOP
for supporting anti-gay policies.
On Monday, nearly 500 demonstrators
gathered in Tampas Perry Harvey, Sr., Park
for the March on the RNC braving
inclement weather to speak out against
the agenda of the one percent before
marching for about a mile to the citys
convention center. Activists afliated with
GetEQUAL were among those in the
LGBT part of the coalition.
Jarrod Scarbrough, a gay Tampa, Fla.,
resident and co-state leader of GetEQUAL
Florida, was among those addressing the
audience, saying the policies adopted by
the Republican Party as part of the draft
version of its platform would harm both
him and his partner of 18 years as well as
his daughter.
We are a family, but this week, the
Republicans will try to add language to
their platform to continue to discriminate
against families like mine, Scarbrough
said. They also want to give an unborn
fetus full rights, yet if that fetus grows up
to be LGBTQ, 88 percent of those rights
will be ripped away. Thats right, as a gay
man, I have 12 percent of the rights as
heterosexuals. This is wrong, especially
when the Fourteenth Amendment to
the Constitution afrms that all men are
created equal.

for the LGBT community. He started slow,
but he gained momentum and hes come
full circle and he supports the things that
we all support that we believe will make us
full citizens of the country.
Members of Marylands LGBT
delegation echoed Fowlkes.
President Obama has stood up for
us in so many ways in the face of a very
strong and virulent opposition, said state
Del. Mary Washington (D-Baltimore City,)
who will attend the Democratic National
Convention for the rst time. Now it is
time that our community and our allies
protect him at the ballot box.
Gay Salisbury Mayor James Ireton is
also a rst-time delegate.
I am excited and proud to be
representing the First Congressional
District and my hometown, Salisbury, Md.,
at the Democratic National Convention,
he told the Blade. I am also proud to be
a small part of the diversity that is, in my
opinion, one of Americas and Marylands
greatest strengths.
In addition to Ireton and Washington,
state Dels. Maggie McIntosh (D-Baltimore
City) and Heather Mizeur (D-Montgomery
County), Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin,
transgender activist Dana Beyer and Mitch
Case of Ellicott City are also members of
Marylands LGBT delegation.
Beyer, a member of the conventions
Credentials Committee who is among the
11 openly trans delegates to this years
convention, told the Blade she feels it
remains important for out LGBT people to
attend the convention.
The more of us that exist out there,
the better we can do our jobs and lay the
groundwork for the next four years, she
said.
Gay Virginia state Sen. Adam Ebbin
(D-Alexandria) is among the four
openly LGBT members Peter Owen
of the Arlington County Democratic
Committee, Joel McDonald of the
Virginia Beach Democratic Committee
and Edmund Turner of Richmond of the
commonwealths convention delegation.
He echoed others who pointed out what
they maintain is Obamas pro-LGBT
record as president.
There is no question that the president
is 100 percent, said Ebbin, who is also a
member of the Credentials Committee.
Bill Clinton had said some of the right
things and appointed some of the right
people, but President Clinton did do
some things that were regrettable and
not acceptable to the community when
he was president. We have nothing to
apologize for. We have everything to be
proud of and we have a president who not
just on LGBT issues, but issues in general
we can be proud of.
National Stonewall Democrats data
indicates that at least 470 of the 5,963
delegates slated to attend this years
convention are openly LGBT nearly
double the 277 delegates who attended
the 2008 Democratic National Convention
in Denver. They will also vote on a
proposed platform that includes a same-
sex marriage plank.
This historic act by our party afrms
that Democrats and President Barack
Obama intend to continue to play a
signicant role in advancing civil rights for
our LGBT community, said Washington.
This is in stark contrast to that of the
national Republican Party, which is clearly
set on articulating a platform that seeks
to turn back the clock not only for LGBT
people, but for women and working and
middle class [people] across the country.
Williams agreed.
It sends a message that the Democratic
Party is inclusive, she said. For equality-
minded people it does matter to see the
party taking a strong stance in support of
valuing all families.
A Harris Interactive poll that Logo TV
commissioned earlier this month found
that the economy, unemployment and
health care rank among LGBT voters
top concerns going into the presidential
election. Nine percent of respondents
listed gay rights as their top priority, while
only six percent said marriage rights for
same-sex couples is the most important
issue.
Veteran gay Dem to
head LGBT caucus
at convention
Stafford to attend 10th party confab

By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
When nearly 500 LGBT delegates attending the Democratic National
Convention hold their rst caucus meeting in Charlotte, N.C., next Tuesday,
veteran gay Democratic activist Rick Stafford of Minnesota will pound the gavel to
call the meeting to order.
Stafford, 60, has been credited with playing a lead role in lobbying, cajoling,
and nudging the Democratic Party to take a strong stand on LGBT rights and
to change its delegate selection rules and policies to reach out to minorities,
especially LGBT people, resulting in a dramatic increase in the number of LGBT
delegates.
This will be my tenth convention, he told the Blade. I was out for nine of
them.
He said he kept his sexual orientation condential during his rst Democratic
Convention in Miami in 1972, when the Democrats nominated George McGovern
for president. He had been selected to attend as a page at a time when he lived
in a small town in rural Minnesota.
There were just a few openly gay delegates, he said. You could t them all
in a phone booth.
Since that time, Stafford has played an increasingly prominent role in Democratic
Party politics, both locally and nationally, according to party activists who know him.
With the exception of the 1976 convention, which nominated Jimmy Carter and
his vice presidential running mate Walter Mondale of Minnesota, Stafford said he
has attended every Democratic Convention since then.
In 1992, Minnesota Democrats elected Stafford as chair of the state party,
making him the rst out gay person to win election to chair either of the two major
parties in a state.
Since the 1990s Stafford has served at various times as a member of the
Democratic National Committee. He currently chairs the DNCs LGBT Americans
Caucus.
Gay Democratic activist Kurt Vorndran of D.C., who has worked with Stafford
on LGBT party related issues since the 1980s, said Stafford worked relentlessly
both behind the scenes and through ofcial DNC channels to push the party into
requiring the state parties to set goals for recruiting LGBT people, along with
other minorities, to become delegates to the Democratic conventions.
He has served as a member of the party and convention rules committees,
Vorndran said. He made sure the rule had outreach policies for the LGBT
community. Thanks to his hard work and the work of others, for the rst time, every
single state may have at least one gay or LGBT delegate.
Stafford said one of the most memorable conventions he attended was in 1984
in San Francisco, when fellow Minnesotan Walter Mondale was nominated for
president and selected U.S. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro (D-N.Y.) as the nations rst
female vice presidential candidate for a major political party.
Working with then gay Democratic activist Tom Chorton of D.C., who became
the leader of the nations rst national gay Democratic Party organization,
Stafford said he used his Minnesota connections to arrange meetings and phone
conversations shortly before the start of the convention with high-level Mondale
campaign ofcials, including Joan Mondale, the candidates wife.
As a result of those efforts, according to Stafford, the Mondale campaign put
out the word to the convention platform committee that the campaign would
support proposed language in the platform calling for federal legislation to ban
discrimination based on sexual orientation.
This led to the rst formal recognition of gays by the party, Stafford said.
With the exception of what he calls a few setbacks and bumps in the road the
strength of the partys platform on LGBT issues and the presence of LGBT people
increased in every Democratic convention since that time, Stafford said.

Says GOP candidate has
a long ways to go on
LGBT issues
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
TAMPA, Fla. Former Rep. Jim Kolbe
(R-Ariz.), whos gay, offered his qualied
endorsement of presumptive Republican
presidential nominee Mitt Romney this
week, saying the candidates business
background makes him a good choice for
president. Kolbe noted that Romney needs
to come along further on LGBT issues.
I think based on the economic issues,
yeah, I think my endorsement would be a
qualied endorsement, Kolbe said in an
interview with the Washington Blade. I think
hes clearly the better of the two candidates,
but we have a long ways to go to bring him
around on this [LGBT rights] issue.
Kolbe, 70, spoke with the Blade following
remarks he delivered at the Republicans Out
to Win event co-hosted by the Log Cabin
Republicans and the Gay & Lesbian Victory
Fund at the Oystercatchers bar at the Grand
Hyatt Tampa Bay. Other speakers included R.
Clarke Cooper, Log Cabins national director,
and Jeff Spitko, senior vice president for
external affairs at the Victory Fund.
The former lawmaker, who served in
the U.S. House from 1985 to 2007, said
he wishes Romney were further along in
the development of his thinking on LGBT
rights, but added its one of many issues
and said Romney has a much better
background in business and economics
than President Obama.
I think hes much more likely to turn
the country in the right direction on scal
matters, Kolbe said. To me, that is the
existential issue that we face today, and
for that reason, I support Mitt Romney.
Romney has built up a signicant
anti-LGBT record over the course of his
campaign. The candidate has signed an
agreement with the anti-gay National
Organization for Marriage pledging to
back a Federal Marriage Amendment and
defend the Defense of Marriage Act in
court. Romneys last stated position on the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act is
that he opposes the legislation, although
he once said hed co-sponsor the bill as a
U.S. Senate candidate in 1994.
Kolbe emphasized that a bi-partisan
approach to LGBT rights is necessary
and he expects the Republican Party to
change on the issue over time because
its clearly, clearly a generational issue
and younger members of the GOP are
more progressive.
I can honestly say I havent talked to
a young person under the age of 30 that
cares a whit about this issue, who thinks
gay marriage is bad and should banished,
abolished or denied, Kolbe said. There
may be some that arent endorsing it, but
none of them are actively opposed to it.
Its just totally generational.
Asked if he wants Log Cabin to follow
suit and endorse Romney, Kolbe replied
hed like to see the organization throw its
support behind the candidate, but isnt a
member of the national board and doesnt
know what action the organization will
take. Log Cabin is expected to announce
whether or not itll endorse Romney prior
to its national dinner in D.C. on Sept. 20.
Kolbe, a trade expert whos a fellow at the
German Marshall Fund think tank, said hes
spoken with the Romney campaigns foreign
policy team on trade and development
issues, but hasnt had any discussions with
the Romney campaign on LGBT rights.
Even though Kolbe said he thinks
Romney is better than Obama on
economic issues, the former congressman
said the election will be very close
and said Romney needs to articulate his
economic vision more clearly to win.
Hes got to use this convention as
his launching pad for a vision of what he
would do thats different than Obama,
Kolbe said. And I think what he hasnt
done yet is articulate a different economic
vision. We know its different, but we dont
know exactly what it is.

great cause, then you are a fantastic t to be
a Restaurant Ambassador.
The ambassadors will be stationed at
one of the participating restaurants and
would be on duty Sept. 20, during lunch
or dinnertime, depending on preference/
availability. We will work with you to ensure
you are paired with a restaurant that you
favor and is convenient for you, said Kanter.

GOP set to roll back
advances for gays, women
if Romney elected
It would have been funny if it werent so
sad as we waited last weekend for the con-
vergence of two storms as Republicans pre-
pared for their convention. The God-made
Hurricane Isaac missed a direct hit on Tampa
but the impact of the abortion storm of their
own making will be felt through the election.
Rep. Todd Akin, the GOP Senate candidate
in Missouri, refused to go away even after
Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan themselves
asked him to drop out. They claim to be ap-
palled at what he said about legitimate
rape while at the same time approving a
harsh stand on abortion in their platform
now dubbed the Akin plank.
Romneys ever-changing views on
abortion now include favoring an excep-
tion for rape, incest and the health of the
mother. His hand-picked running mate,
Paul Ryan, has repeatedly sponsored leg-
islation with Akin strongly arguing that
there should be no exceptions including
for either rape or incest. Now, as Ryans
ambition trumps his so-called principles,
he says Romney is the leader so he goes
along calling it progress. Ryan said in a
recent interview that in essence rape is
just another method of conception. So
my question to Republicans would be
why are you so upset with Akin when your
pick for vice president and your plat-
form support his basic views?
Most people agree with President
Obama, Rape is rape. It is indefensible and
an assault no matter what qualier you put
in front of it. A majority are thankful for the
Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, which
ensures that abortion is legal in this country.
If you are still mulling over whether
to vote Democratic or Republican, just
remember the next president and Con-
gress will determine who is nominated
and conrmed to the Supreme Court.
If you believe among other issues that
we need to protect a womans right to
choose you have only one choice in this
election and the Republican convention
made that very clear.
Some Republicans, including mem-
bers of the Log Cabin Republicans, have
twisted themselves into a pretzel trying
to justify that one line inserted into the
platform We embrace the principle that
all Americans have the right to be treated
with dignity and respect means some-
thing. This is a cruel joke they are playing
on themselves and others.
A party whose platform that denies
women control over their own bodies,
supports a constitutional amendment
banning gay marriage, reafrms DOMA
as the law of the land, says abstinence is
the only type of family planning educa-
tion that should be funded by the gov-
ernment for teenagers and states the
Congress should continue to control im-
portant decisions impacting the lives of
the people of the District of Columbia
is surely not a party that believes that all
Americans should be treated with dignity
and respect.
If you stood on the battle lines ght-
ing for civil and human rights for African
Americans, women, or the LGBT commu-
nity you cannot but think to yourself, My
God, do we have to ght some of these
ghts all over again? Many in the young-
er generation most likely didnt even un-
derstand the graphic of the coat hanger
accompanying the story in the Hufng-
ton Post on the Republican position on
abortion. That is how long ago most of us
even thought about back-alley abortions.
The Republican Party calls for ending
Medicare as we know it so we become
the only civilized nation in the world with-
out a guarantee of healthcare for our
seniors. Romney calls for adding $700
billion back into the Medicare budget
to increase payments to providers with-
out recognition that the one thing that
President Obama and Paul Ryan agreed
on was that amount had to be cut. They
disagreed on how to get those savings
but agreed that to keep the program vi-
able in any form they had to be made.
Romney ignores that providers agreed
to those cuts in the Affordable Care Act
because it will insure millions more Amer-
icans have private insurance allowing
them to make up any revenue they would
lose from Medicare.
Some say party platforms mean noth-
ing yet they are the set of principles that
the partys candidates run on and a set
of beliefs afrmed by those who control
the party. This Republican platform is a
statement of principles and beliefs better
suited to the 18th century than to the 21st.
There are nine weeks until the elec-
tion. Everyone needs to be aware of the
principles enunciated in both party plat-
forms before they vote. I am betting that
when people fully understand the princi-
ples and beliefs on which the Republican
Party is running, that President Obama
will be reelected.

EDI TORI AL CARTOON
We must work for
presidents re-election to
continue advances
Im deeply honored to be one of two na-
tional standing committee members from
Montgomery County attending the Demo-
cratic National Convention in Charlotte
next week along with my friend Sen. Jamie
Raskin. Im also equally proud to be one of
a record-setting 11 trans delegates to the
convention, three more than in 2008. These
are, alphabetically: Kylar Broadus (Mo.), Jan-
ice Covington (N.C.), Cris Land (Ore.), Dari-
ah Lohman (Ariz.), Marisa Richmond (Tenn.),
Diego Sanchez (Mass.), Janice Shiner (Wis.),
Babs Siperstein (N.J.), Melissa Sklarz (N.Y.),
and Meghan Stabler (Texas), with Babs be-
ing a super delegate and member of the
DNC Executive Committee.
The trans representation is highly signi-
cant, and not simply for the absolute number.
Relative to the total of 518 LGBT delegates,
the number is only 2 percent, which is one
quarter of what it should be. However, its
signicant because even though were small
in number, we represent the segment of the
LGBT community that has the most for which
to be thankful to the president. Yes, repeal
of Dont Ask, Dont Tell, and the assault
on DOMA benet us all. But the trans com-
munity has reaped a bonanza these past four
years. Here are a few of the pearls:
The president began with the signing of
the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr.
Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2009.
Gender identity was added to the fed-
eral governments anti-discrimination
policies, and followed up with guidance to
agencies and departments on how to pro-
vide supportive workplace environments.
The rst administration ofcial Assis-
tant Attorney General Tom Perez of the
Civil Rights Division of the Department
of Justice testied on behalf of the in-
clusion of gender identity in ENDA. I had
rst lobbied the AAG on behalf of the
trans community in 2005 when he sat on
the Montgomery County Council.
Gender identity was included in safe
schools discussions as the It Gets Bet-
ter movement took off, and has been
part of federal government anti-bullying
work and support for GSAs ever since.
The Social Security Administration
ceased issuing no match letters to the
employers of trans workers, no longer in-
advertently outing them at work.
Health care providers receiving federal
funds (which includes almost all provid-
ers in the U.S.), including the federal gov-
ernment, are barred from discriminating
against trans persons. Similarly, hospitals
receiving federal funds must respect the
family structure of patients, regardless of
gender identity or sexual orientation.
HHS will be including data on the LGBT
community, the rst step to determining the
size and scope of health problems affecting
the trans population, and aiding in research
on trans-specic health problems in the future.
The Veterans Administration, the single
largest integrated health care system in
the United States, providing care to more
than 8.3 million veterans annually, upgrad-
ed its policies to provide quality care to
all trans veterans, including the updating
of medical records to reect ones proper
gender identity in the nations largest elec-
tronic medical records system.
Targeting of trans women of color ex-
posed to HIV has begun with grants
made available through HRSA, the Health
Resources and Services Administration.
Looking forward to 2014, the Affordable Care
Act bans discrimination on the basis of gender
identity by insurers operating in the exchanges.
HUD, the Department of Housing and
Urban Development, adopted an anti-
discrimination policy for federally funded
housing covering trans persons, and its
secretary, Shaun Donovan, became the
rst cabinet secretary to address a trans
organization (NCTE).
The State Department adopted pro-
gressive policies allowing trans persons
to obtain gender-appropriate passports
without a surgery requirement.
The administration has, to date, appointed
three trans persons to serve in various de-
partments Dylan Orr, Amanda Simpson
and Chloe Schwenke the rst administra-
tion to have appointed any trans person.
And, nally, and most importantly, the EEOC
ruled, in Macy v Holder, that Title VIIs prohibi-
tion against sex discrimination includes trans
and gender non-conforming people. This
expansion of the denition of sex discrimina-
tion will become the norm throughout the
government, and applies not only to federal
government employees and federal contrac-
tors, but to all Americans.
So, as a member of the trans community, I
have much reason to be thankful to President
Obama, and I am proud to serve the Democrat-
ic Party in our efforts to secure one more term.
We have also created Trans United for Obama
(TU4O), a national volunteer effort to activate
transgender people, their supporters, allies, fam-
ilies and friends to re-elect the president. With
a little over nine weeks to go, I ask all to get in-
volved to make the re-election a reality, and help
us not only maintain these advances but move
forward in a second term to make equality for all
trans and gay persons a lived reality.
LGBT equality outweighed
by other issues in
presidential race
Strap yourself in Labor Day is the
traditional full-on start of the presidential
campaign.
This holiday weekend marks the launch
of the nal phase of what will likely con-
tinue to be an acrimonious, divisive and
extremely competitive election season.
When President Obama declared his
support in early May for state efforts grant-
ing civil marriage equality to gays and les-
bians, political observers watched to dis-
cern if the announcement would have a net
impact on the election battle. The worry
among LGBT activists was that his long-
anticipated and unexpectedly timed reveal
might cost him votes among key constitu-
encies greater than the potential political
benet among other demographic groups.
The consensus is that support for
same-sex marriage has not harmed
Obamas re-election prospects, at least in
the few portions of the country where the
electoral outcome is not predictive.
However, as the Blade reported last
week, the most surprising result is that the
announcement appears not to have ben-
eted the presidents campaign among
LGBT voters. In fact, it may prove to be
insufcient to stem a slow but steady
trickle of LGBT voters over time shifting
their support to Republican candidates.
While a strong majority of the LGBT
community typically votes Democratic, indi-
cations are that gay and lesbian voters are
trending more bipartisan and are becoming
notably more independent with regard to
political party afliation and ballot loyalty.
This discernable and consistent evolu-
tion in voting habits parallels the expan-
sion of both cultural acceptance and civil
protections across the country. As our
community is assimilated we seem to be
giving greater consideration to broader
issues affecting us as citizens increasingly
treated as ordinary and as voters increas-
ingly concerned with general issues.
A new national poll of likely LGBT voters
indicates that support for President Obama
has dropped to 67 percent, a decline of at
least six percentage points since 2008.
Gays and lesbians, same as all voters, are
most concerned about the economy, jobs
and unemployment, according to a Har-
ris Interactive poll commissioned by Logo
TV released on Aug. 21. Only nine percent
of us rank gay rights in general as being
most important, with marriage equality rat-
ed that way by a mere six percent.
The good news is that near majorities of
the general population rate positively a can-
didates support for LGBT equality in several
areas. This historic shift in voter attitudes
portends the demise of our civil rights as a
wedge issue in national campaigns.
Likewise, there is a clear reward available
to the Republican Party in embracing equal-
ity. While two-thirds of LGBT voters plan to
vote to re-elect Obama, nearly 1-in-4 would
be more likely to vote for Romney if he held
the same positions as the president on
same-sex marriage and other LGBT issues.
According to CNN voter exit polls in
2008, 4 percent of the electorate self-
identied as gay or lesbian. Presidential
candidate John McCain won 27 percent of
the gay vote. In the 2010 midterm congres-
sional election, fully one-third of gay and
lesbian voters supported the Republican
candidate. In elections since 2000, the por-
tion of the LGBT vote won by the GOP is
estimated to have progressively increased
from one-fth to one-quarter to one-third.
Recent voting trends and various polling
sources indicate that the prior 3-to-1 advantage
enjoyed by Democrats among LGBT voters
has shrunk to an approximately 2-to-1 margin.
One contributing factor in the antici-
pated presidential vote split this year may
be the signicant number of entrepre-
neurs and small business owners within
the LGBT community, estimated to be as
high as 10 percent by the National Gay
and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
Gallup reported late last month that sup-
port for Obama among business owners
had fallen to 35 percent, the lowest level
in the campaign.
Broadening cultural integration will
undoubtedly accelerate the movement
toward diversication in LGBT voting
patterns. Electoral competitiveness for
the gay vote based on mainstream issues
will gradually become the eventual norm.
The bottom line is that local and nation-
al candidates of both political parties who
support our full civil equality will enjoy the
greatest opportunity to earn our votes.

faster than any other invention in human
history, with the possible exception of
handguns and tequila.
Ganns experience with lm festivals
(Cyberslut has had 47 screenings
worldwide, making it one of the most
successful gay-themed short lms)
inspired him to create a different kind of
lm festival.
I travelled to festivals all over the
world and thats when I realized that many
festivals were about food and parties
and sponsors but not necessarily about
lms or lmmakers, Gann says. Thats
when I said I need to do something thats
different. The focus of my festival was
going to be on lmmakers and if I did that
right, then the food and the money and
the parties would come.
Gann has established a system to make
the Festival a supportive environment for
lmmakers.
We give feedback to all the lmmakers
who enter, whether they make it into the
festival or not. We allow them to see their
scores and the judges comments. That
has helped some lmmakers recraft their
nal edit to make it tighter.
Gann also realized he wanted to focus
on short lms (less than 20 minutes). He
thinks that theres a hunger for really
good short content. If Internet use is any
indication, people like to see a story in
a few minutes. He adds that short lms
are also a great way for edgling artists to
learn their craft.

Natalie Moss says moving to Rehoboth Beach, Del., was always in my master
plan. It just ended up happening a little sooner than she originally thought.
And thats ne by her.
The D.C. native and longtime resident spent summers at the beach for
decades and had her accounting clients shes a CPA established enough
that she no longer needed face time with them in Washington. Shortly after
Sept. 11, 2001, she made the move.
Im so glad I did because if Id waited, with the housing market the way it was,
I never could have afforded it, she says. Everything worked out just right.
The 64-year-old lesbian spent years as a buyer for womens clothing stores
and running an ice cream shop in Rockville. Business was slow in the winter
months, so she did taxes and went back to school. Now she spends a lot of her
time as a full-time volunteer as treasurer for CAMP Rehoboth. Shes been
working feverishly again this year as co-chair of its annual Sundance event.
This years incarnation dubbed Legend of the Silver Rainbow is this
weekend and features an auction, cocktails and party over two nights (Saturday
and Sunday) at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center (229 Rehoboth Ave.).
Tickets are $80 for both nights or $45 for one. As always, proceeds benet
CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. Details are at camprehoboth.com.
We could never do it without the help of the entire team, she says. Ive
been helping for about 20 years and its amazing, we get most of the same
people back each year and everybody just kind of falls into a rhythm and knows
exactly what needs to be done. They just fall into place and they get it. The
whole thing is totally mind blowing.
Moss and her partner of 20 years, Evelyn, live with their dog Lucilu at the beach.
She enjoys spending time at the beach and great food when shes not volunteering.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
I have been out since I was around 27.
I really did not have a hard time telling
anyone, once I decided to come out.
Being gay just became a part of me, like
having brown eyes. I never actually told
my parents, although my brother did. My
mother passed away before we had a
real discussion.
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
Ellen as a public gure. Steve Elkins
and Murray Archibald for what they have
achieved in founding and running CAMP
Rehoboth.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
Coming out in D.C. I loved going to
the bars and dancing. The best was the
Grand Central, soon followed by The
Other Side. I do not know too much
about D.C. now since I have been in
Rehoboth for the last 10 years, but in
Rehoboth we always loved happy hour
at Cloud 9 and the margaritas at Dos
Locos.

DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
On the beach, perfect weather,
tented catered delicious food and drink,
surrounded by friends, great music and
dancing.

WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Finding a cure for cancer. I am a
cancer survivor and know so many who
are touched by the disease.

WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME
WOULD YOU CHANGE?
Not going to war in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Our economy would be in
much better shape without our dollars
going to support wars.

WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
I have 65 years to choose from! Ellen
coming out on TV. And disco, love disco.
And Disney World.

ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
Honesty

WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK
POST OR TWEET?
Invited everyone to Sundance 25
th

anniversary on Labor Day weekend.

IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT
WOULD THE TITLE BE?
Wine, Women and Song
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY
TO CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Stay the way I am. But I wish they
would discover the perfect diet pill.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND
THE PHYSICAL WORLD?
I am spiritual enough to thank god for
things, but not sure I believe there is one.

WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT
MOVEMENT LEADERS?
Concentrate on getting the right
people representing the states in
Congress. No matter who the president
is, he cannot get anything done without
Congresss support. Get the bigoted
homophobic people out.

WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS
HOT COALS FOR?
My lovely girlfriend.

WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS
YOU MOST?
Overly swishy boys and extreme
tattooed dykes.

WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT
MOVIE?
The movie The Childrens Hour
changed my life. That is when it really hit
me that I was a lesbian I was around
13 years old. We have a great lm
festival here in Rehoboth and we get to
see many good LGBT movies every year
so I have many current favorites.
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED
SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Small talk

WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU
MOST COVET?
I do not really covet any prize. I just
want to be known as a giving, generous
and nice person.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN
AT 18?
I wish I had come out sooner. I wasted
almost 10 years being in the closet.
WHY REHOBOTH?
I could go on and on, but the most
important thing to me is the gay
community and the work that we do
at CAMP Rehoboth. If you know about
the demographics that have recently
been published by the Hufngton Posts
Americas Gayest Neighborhoods,
Rehoboth is ninth most popular for gay
men and fth most popular for lesbians.
We have worked very hard to make this
a welcoming community where gay and
straight work, live and play together.

Pink-haired chanteuse
brings new show to MOVA
By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO
Special Agent Galactica whom her
alter ego Jeffrey Johnson lovingly refers
to variously as the pink-haired one and
the old gal is continuing her quest
for inter-planetary musical domination: on
Tuesday she starts a new monthly gig at
MOVA.
Dubbed Ye Olde Rock n Roll Show, its
slated for 8 to 10 p.m. the rst Tuesday of
every month at the bar (2204 14
th
Street,
N.W.) and will feature the chanteuse
covering songs by acts such as Pink,
Stevie Nicks, Led Zeppelin, Heart, the
Eurythmics, Pat Benetar and more.
Galactica will be joined by a new outt,
the Rock Steady Band Percy White
on bass, Steve Guterman on drums, and
Wicked Jezebel members Pauline Anson-
Dross on guitar and Ginger Starling on
keyboards and backing vocals.
Johnson says the shows will be more
structured and rock-oriented than the
bluesy, more laid back shows Galactica
performs on the second and fourth Fridays
of every month (6 to 9 p.m.) at Black Fox
Lounge (1723 Connecticut Ave., N.W.).
This is more bam rock and roll,
Johnson says. The approach will be a
little different. Well be rocking it out.
He says the gig came out of MOVAs
interest in expanding its musical offerings.
After six months of successful often
standing room only performances at
Black Fox where Galactica performs with
her Very Sexy Cute Boy combo along
with regular guests, the pink haired one is
establishing a reputation as a delightfully
quirky performer who offers something off
the beaten path.
There are things I do as Galactica, I
cant really get away with singing just as
Jeffrey, Johnson says.
Were excited for Special Agent
Galacticas premiere and performance
at MOVA, says MOVA Manager Cliff
Johnson. Her show will capture a modern
and upbeat theatrical performance that
will be a great addition to our chic and
modern venue.
Johnson, whose Galactica persona
was conceived as a one-off for a New
Years Eve performance years ago, has
found the lady has staying power. He
used her for years as a spokesperson
for the now-closed Ganymede Arts. He
was widely known as a lip sync artist
for years but after Johnson appeared
in Falsettos a few years ago, he
rediscovered his love of live singing.
Most of the MOVA material will be sung
live, though Galactica still includes a lip
synced set in her Black Fox shows.
For a long time, way before I got into
theater, music was always my rst love,
Johnson says. And theres so much
more I can do with Galactica than I can
as just me. Theres a lot more room for
experimentation.
Visit pinkhairedone.com for more
information.

Gay-themed play in Page-to-Stage Festival
Local playwright Alan Sharpe and his African-American Collective Theater return to the
Kennedy Centers annual Page-to-Stage Festival this weekend for a reading of his new
work 11x81/2 Inches, which he describes as darkly dramatic, explicitly erotic, candidly
comic and raunchily romantic. It explores the lives of same-gender-loving men in the
black community.
The Festival runs Saturday through Monday and the readings will occur at various spots
throughout the Kennedy Center. The readings are free and no tickets are required but
seating is limited and available rst come, rst served. Sharpes play will be performed
Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the South Atrium Lobby.
More information is at kennedy-center.org.

Robert Camina will be screened Wednesday in Washington at 7 p.m. at the Marvin Center
Amphitheatre at George Washington University (800 21

bar that resulted in multiple arrests and serious injuries. Lesbian actress Meredith Baxter
narrates. A meet and greet will be held at 6:30. The screening is co-sponsored by the
Latino GLBT History Project, George Washington University and One in Ten. More

LGBT sports leagues
celebrate victories, plan for fall
By KEVIN MAJOROS
As August winds down, many of the
LGBT sports leagues in the D.C. area are
wrapping up their summer leagues and
kicking off their fall leagues. Tournaments
are a big part of this time of year and the
D.C. teams are always ready to play.
Congratulations to the D.C. Strokes
Rowing Club (dcstrokes.org) for bringing
home the gold at the U.S. Rowing
Masters National Championships in
the Mens Heavyweight B 8+ Final.
The championships were held from

athletes rowing for titles. As a team, the
Strokes nished an impressive 21
st

The D.C. Sentinels (teamdcbasketball.
org) basketball team will be sending four
teams to the Hurricane Classic tournament

The LGBT sports community would like
to give a special thanks to outdoor gear
giant REI (rei.com) for recently coming
out in support of same-sex marriage. The
company has supported Ski Bums events
since 2010 and this was a bold move
coming on the heels of the Chick-l-A
restorm.
CEO Sally Jewell recently published a
note to REIs 11,000 employees pledging
the companys full-hearted support of
same-sex marriage. REI is based in the state
of Washington where voters will approve or
reject same-sex marriage on Referendum
74 on Nov. 6 in the general election.

28 AUGUST 31, 2012 THE GUI DE TO ARTS & CULTURE
Highly entertaining
Whorehouse production
opens Signature season
By BRIAN T. CARNEY
It takes a combination of exceptionally
good source material and competent
theatrical savvy to infuse a work from the
late 70s with a fresh and timely feel, but
thats just what Signature Theatre has
done with its current production, a mostly
solid and highly entertaining adaptation
of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
with which its opening its 23
rd
season.
With its focus on sexual hypocrisy,
political treachery and media
sensationalism, the plot could have been
ripped from todays headlines. Instead, its
based on a real piece of Texas history
the closing of the infamous Chicken Ranch
in La Grange, Texas in 1973. The musical
moves the action to the ctional town of
Gilbert in 1978. The Chicken Ranch is run
by the wily and earthy Miss Mona (Sherri L.
Edelen). Working closely with the tough-
talking Sheriff Earl Dodd and maintaining
a strict set of rules, Miss Mona creates a
refuge for her ladies and a pleasant
atmosphere for her guests.
Unfortunately, the house is discovered
by Melvin P. Thorpe, a seedy, self-styled,
self-serving media watchdog who decides
that the house must be closed down. State
and local politicians try to ignore the furor,
but Thorpe stages a raid just as the fabled
Aggies football team arrives to celebrate
their big victory. The oily Governor forces the
Sheriff to shut down the Chicken Ranch and
Miss Mona and her girls are forced to leave
what has become their home and safe haven.
The musical features a tight book by Larry
L. King (the D.C.-based author, not the CNN
newsman) and Peter Masterson that is folksy
without ever being cloying, and music and
lyrics by Carol Hall. Halls score is an effective
blend of rousing production numbers and
intimate country ballads and her clever lyrics
are playful and witty without ever being too
explicit. After all, as Miss Mona says with a
wicked twinkle in her eye, Theres nothing
dirty going on. In fact, the show, which
was rather controversial when it opened
(newspapers refused to run ads for the
production and CBS heavily censored The
Aggie Song during the Tony broadcast),
seems almost tame today.
The vibrant Edelen effortlessly leads a
strong cast through a complex combination
of broad satire, astute social commentary
and the moving details of lives torn
apart by cruelty, cowardice and political
opportunism. Shes got a powerful voice,
a wry smile and delicious comic timing
along with a sure hand with the heart-felt
book scenes and when the time nally
comes, solid two-step abilities. Nova Y.
Payton rocks the house as Monas assistant,
Jewel. Their duet No Lies is bound to
be a highlight of the theater season. Other
strong performances are turned in by
Thomas Adrian Simpson as the Sheriff, Dan
Manning as the slick-tongued and nimble-
footed Governor and Christopher Bloch
as Melvin P. Thorpe, an amusingly sleazy
blend of Geraldo Rivera and Jerry Falwell.
There are, unfortunately, a few missteps
in the production. The offstage band is
small but way too loud and bass heavy. The
opening number is at with static staging
and boring distracting projections. Overall,
the design work is uneven. For example, the
red and black lingerie pieces for the girls
dont t the ambience at the Chicken Ranch
and the boys dont even bother to dress up
for their big night at the whorehouse.
The most serious aw in the production,
however, is the staging of many of the lovely
ballads. Just when the show needs some
breathing room and just when the characters
have something important to share, the
numbers are loud, rushed and poorly lit.
Overall though, the production
helmed by Eric Schaeffer (Signatures
artistic director) is redeemed with its
outstanding ensemble. The talented team
creates sharply individualized characters,
especially Madeline Botteri as Shy (her nely
wrought performance highlights how the
show thoughtfully addresses the realities of
prostitution). They awlessly execute Karma
Camps delightful choreography. Her high-
stepping dance routines are exhilarating,
especially the ladies thrilling kick line that
caps off A Lil Ole Bitty Pissant Country
Place, the toe-tapping shenanigans of
Texas Has a Whorehouse In It and The
Sidestep. Theres also incredible athletic
artistry in The Aggie Song, where the boys
change out of their football uniforms and
lustily prepare for their night with the ladies.

As a lmmaker, he says, if youre
able to tell a succinct story that grabs the
audiences attention and is emotionally
gripping in a few minutes, then you know
what youre doing as a storyteller. And that
to me is impressive.
So, in 2004, Gann started the D.C.
Shorts Festival, nanced largely with
money from his own checking account.
The rst year, 75 lms were submitted and
32 lms were presented in three screenings
for enthusiastic audiences. Looking back
on the experience, he says, It made me
a nervous wreck but the whole thing was
a big success. We sold out all the tickets
and had to turn people away, which was
amazing. And its grown from there.
Today, D.C. Shorts is the largest short
lm festival on the East Coast.
There were more than 850 submissions
for the 2012 Festival. After a rigorous
selection process, 140 movies were
chosen for screening. The lms, with run
times ranging from one to 20 minutes, are
being presented in 16 showcases. Each
showcase lasts around 90 minutes. An
interactive online tool called The Film
Finder helps audience members select
the programs theyre most interested in
seeing. Browsers can sort by showcase,
country of origin, genre (documentary,
animation, horror, comedy, drama and
so on) and interest area (including LGBT,
local lms and celebrities).
The showcases will be presented at
four venues throughout the D.C. region,
including the E Street Cinema, the U.S. Navy
Memorial, the Atlas Performing Arts Center
and the new Angelika Film Center in Fairfax.
In addition to the showcases, there are a
variety of other events for lmmakers and lm
fans to enjoy. For example, patrons can enjoy:
Free lunch time screenings at the E
Street Cinema in downtown D.C.
Free family and teen screenings at the
new Angelika Film Center in Virginia
A screenplay competition where six
scripts (selected from 185 submissions) are
given a staged reading by local actors and
directors. The winner will receive a cash
prize ($1,000 when the award is made and
$1,000 when the lm is completed) and a
slot in the 2013 Festival.
Free seminars for aspiring and
practicing lmmakers
The Best of DC Shorts showcase
which features movies selected by audiences
during the festivals opening weekend
An Awards Brunch with accolades
from the festival jury, the festival director,
audience members, and a peer award
from the lmmakers themselves
And, a variety of legendary parties
that offer food and drink and DJs and
dancing and lots of chances to meet
lmmakers.
Gann adds that that this years festival
has an emphasis on lms about food and
includes partnerships with area restaurants.
We have a big food-lm program this
year, he says. Weve paired eight lms
with local chefs whove prepared special
dishes based on those lms. At those
lms, you can actually sample the food at
the end of the screening.
For example, Murder Mouth by
rst-time Australian lmmaker Madeleine
Parry is a documentary showing how,
Madeleine decides that unless she kills
it, she cant eat it. The lm is paired with
Ed Witts recipe for Crostini with Lamb
Tartare, which will be served to audience
members after select screenings. Like
Maddie in the lm, the chef from 701
argues that, Modern day carnivores have
become so disconnected from their food
that they are unable to identify it without
the labels from the grocery store.

Actress gives tour de
force as late liberal
columnist
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Since her death from breast cancer at 62
in 2007, journalist Molly Ivins voice has been
sorely missed. An unapologetic antiwar
liberal renowned for her biting humor,
Ivins railed against injustice throughout her
newspaper career, championing women,
minorities and societys have-nots. She
brilliantly lampooned politics (particularly in
her native Texas), and hilariously skewered
rightwing politicians including George W.
Bush whom she famously dubbed Shrub.
With Red Hot Patriot: The Kick-Ass
Wit of Molly Ivins now at Arena Stage
starring Kathleen Turner audiences get
the chance to revisit the late great Ivins
life, wit and work.
Penned by identical twin sister journalists
Margaret Engel and Allison Engel, the
one-woman bio drama (well almost one
woman, there is a robotic copy boy played
by Nicholas Yenson who silently appears
now and then) opens in an old school
newsroom where Ivins is struggling to
write an article about her father, a lifelong
Republican nicknamed the General.
When Ivins takes a break, a combination of
projected images and her past articles spat
from an AP wire machine work together to
joggle her memory, prompting 75 minutes
of scattered reminisces.
Turned out in a denim shirt, jeans,
ashy red cowboy boots and a curly red
wig, Turner despite the now signature
halting delivery and almost labored
breathing gives a strong performance
oozing with energy and charm. She ts
well into the role of down home whiskey-
voiced raconteur, delighting audiences
with tales and quotes drawn from some
of Ivins best columns; and, of course,
anyone whos seen Turner make obscene
phone calls to Mink Stole in Serial Mom
knows shes very funny.
Staged capably by David Esbjornson,
Red Hot Patriot also gives brief glimpses
into darker parts of our ballsy heroines not
always charmed life. Turner handles these
moments beautifully too. Beneath the
humor and easy Texas ways, Ivins was a
complicated woman who knew heartache,
disappointment and rage. Boyfriends
died too young. The cancer came later.
About her battle with the bottle, she says,
Alcohol may lead nowhere but it sure is
the scenic route. Humor was not only
good for getting readers attention, it also
tempered feelings.
Ivins identied with the outsider
from early on. As a six foot tall, freckled
debutante in conservative 1950s Houston,
she felt out of place and knew her parents
country club lifestyle wasnt for her. After
graduating from Smith College and
earning a masters degree in journalism
from Columbia University, she went to
work at a paper in Minneapolis followed
by six wonderful years at the Texas
Observer, a lone voice of liberalism in a
very red state. She was with the New York
Times for a while but was red for referring
to a New Mexico chicken slaughtering
festival as a gang pluck. Ivins returned
to her beloved Texas where she found a
wealth of material covering local and later
national politics.
As Ivins, Turner comments on a series of
Texas politicians some of whose projected
headshots loom large behind her.
Concerning a state representative, she
says, If his IQ gets any lower, well have
to water him twice a day. She reminds
us how she warned the world about the
dangers of a George W. Bush presidency
in not one but two books.
And toward the plays end, she says, Its
not about left and right, its about up and
down, the few screwing the many. Ivins may
no longer be around to give her inimitable
take on American politics, but theres no
doubt where shed stand on the issues.

Telling a friend you have
more than platonic
feelings carries a risk
By MEGHANN NOVINSKIE
and KIM ROSENBERG
Its not unusual for friendships to
develop into romances. But if you nd
yourself developing more than platonic
feelings toward a long-time friend, its a
risky venture. Show your hand and you
could lose not just any hope of a dating
relationship, but the friendship as well.
So how to navigate these feelings? First off,
theres nothing wrong with loving one of the
people closest to you. In fact, weve seen many
scenarios where best friends became lovers
for life. But moving from friends to partners
has many variables lets talk it through.
First, consider why you now see your best
friend in a new light. Is there mutual undeniable
chemistry? Have his/her compliments come
across as irtatious? Are you noticing more
physical closeness when just having a genuine
chat on casual afternoons? These could be
little signs that youve fallen for you friend.
Whatever you do, dont wait until youve had
a couple (too many) martinis to make your
rst move. Though you may know your friend
quite well, be sure that (s)he possibly has
mutual feelings for you, especially since theres
so much at risk in this situation.
Unfortunately, friendship sometimes turns
to lust when there is a lingering jealousy that
swirls around your time spent together. Is your
best friend dating someone new and spending
more time with her/him than you? Did (s)he
get a makeover/lose weight/get promoted or
achieve some other thing you covet before you
did? Origins of Im in love with my BFF can be
varied, so reflect and make sure your feelings are
genuine and not a bit of immaturity or jealousy.
If you pursue her/him in this manner too quickly
or for the wrong reasons, youll likely ruin your
relationship potential as well as your friendship.
What to do? Start with asking yourself if youre
ready for the shift in dynamics here. With risk of
sounding somewhat callous or too pragmatic,
you have to weigh the pros and cons thoroughly.
Spontaneity can be exciting, but dont jump
into his/her pants without fully considering the
negative ramifications if this new relationship
goes south suffering irreparable damage. Do
you want to risk a long-term friendship for this?
Your social circle is also going to have to adjust to
the change, so be prepared for a mixed reaction
to your new found love with your BFF.
We all know that the more time you spend
with someone you find attractive, the more
undeniable those feelings are. That said, many
times in our community, our best friends are
straight (or straight for now). Therefore,
acting on your instinct and sharing your desire
for something more may result in dealing with
issues of your best friend coming out as a mature
adult and you may find yourself helping your
friend struggle with finding her/his place within
the LGBT community, let alone, your relationship
in general. This doesnt have to be a negative
experience, just be prepared for all the emotional
commitment and work that comes along with it.
On a positive note, ever consider how
relationships develop? Have you looked
at the people you surround yourself with?
What are the common threads between
your different social networks? It makes total
sense that, as we age, we could become
attracted to a close friend. Youve shared
ups and downs, lots of life experiences and a
genuine interest in being close. All these are
characteristics of a loving partnership as well.
Falling in love with a close friend is quite
common, yet daunting. Make sure to give
this pursuit of transition from friends to
lovers some thought it could be one
of the best or worst decisions you make in
your love life.

Are you obligated to
disclose ghosts, other
nuisances?
By DAVID BEDIZ

In a recent continuing education class,
an instructor asked a group of Realtors,
Would a seller have to disclose the pres-
ence of a halfway house next to their
home? He went on, What if a neigh-
borhood had been ghting a community
pool for years because of noise, trafc
and other nuisances caused by it, and the
seller of an adjoining house happened to
be the one spearheading the initiative
would he or she have to disclose the
problems and their struggle?
The answer is, in most situations,
no. The listing agent of that property
wouldnt be obligated to disclose any-
thing either. In fact, that agent would be
forbidden from making any such disclo-
sure because it would violate their ob-
ligation to work in the best interests of
their client, the sellers.
The same goes for disclosures of re-
cent criminal activity on or near the prop-
erty, such as drug dealing, murder or
gang activity, or the perceived presence
of ghosts, or the use of the street by noisy
busses or ambulances, or other issues
that most buyers would probably be con-
cerned about. So why shouldnt there be
a law demanding sellers disclose these
things, if they know them to be fact?
The truth is, there are laws about dis-
closure, and theyre pretty strong. Both
the federal government and the District
of Columbia have very detailed disclo-
sure forms regarding the presence of
lead-based paint that must be complet-
ed by buyers and sellers for any home
with any part of it built before 1978. D.C.
also has a lengthy seller disclosure pack-
et that requires sellers to notify buyers of
any known defects with the structure of
the house, plus plumbing, electric, and
heating and air conditioning systems,
and more. Maryland requires sellers to
notify buyers of the past year of utility
bills too.
Youll notice, though, that all the
disclosures that are required have to
do only with the physical characteris-
tics of the house itself: things that, on
their own, would stay the same and, if
defective, could pose a potential hassle
or hazard to any future owner. None of
the disclosures required have anything
to do with the neighborhood itself, be-
cause that is not part of the property
being conveyed. Nor do the disclosures
need to mention the people in or near
the house past, present or future.
Thats because, unlike an A/C system
that pumps out warm air, and will do
so until its xed, people change all the
time. Just because there hasnt been
a murder within a half-mile in 10 years
doesnt mean there couldnt be one
on settlement day, on your own door-
step. The converse is true as well a
record of crime in your new neighbor-
hood wont necessarily indicate that
youll ever be in any danger when you
move in. The same is true for a murder
on the property (no indication of any
future murders), ghosts (no such thing),
nor noisy busses or ambulances (thats
your job to check, and too easy not to).
At a certain point, the law gives way
to common sense, and the obligations
of the seller turn into a responsibility to
the buyer. If you are about to make a
half-million-dollar purchase, you have
the responsibility yourself to do a little
due diligence regarding your investment.
Google your address, nd the neighbor-
hood association online, walk the streets
at night and chat up the neighbors. That
would be a better disclosure than any-
thing the seller would ever provide you
anyway, and youll be sure to get the real
scoop on things.
But, as the instructor warns in his class,
Be sure to do that before youre under
contract, or at least during your general
inspection period when you have the op-
portunity to void the contract. If you nd
out theres a band of cannibals living next
door, thats not necessarily grounds to
cancel the contract. If you cancelled any-
way, you could lose your earnest money
deposit, although it could be worth it to
keep your head.
