Microwave Tubes Microwave tubes have long been used for broadcasting, data communication, in various radar devices,

medical accelerators, and in industrial applications. Recently, the application of microwave tubes has been expanding into the advanced scientific fields such as large-size accelerators, nuclear fusion facilities, etc. Microwave tubes are now becoming widely used as key components in these applications.

High-Power Klystrons Toshiba is one of the leading manufacturers in the world of Klystron with a wide frequency range, from the UHF through the X band. Through joint development with the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, and various other research insitutes both inside and outside Japan, we have developed and introduced the world's most powerful Klystrons, with frequencies of 508MHz/1.2MW in continuous wave tubes, 2.8GHz/100MW in (10sec.) pulsed tubes, 5.7GHz/50MW in (10sec.) pulsed tubes, and 11.4GHz/75MW in (10sec.) pulsed tubes. In collaboration with various research institutes, in particular Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Toshiba has improved its technological capabilities, and seen lots of results from these efforts. Among them, we created integrated mode converter technology, and we are hoping to break through the limits of high-power performance using this technology. The integrated mode converter directs the output power at a right angle to axis of the tube, then the collector, which transforms used-out electron beams to heat, is released from the constraint as an output waveguide. By taking advantage of the integral converter, Toshiba has achieved a significant improvement in conversion efficiency by collecting the energy from the used-out electron beams (CPD: Collector Potential Depression). Our Gyrotron was the first tube of this type in the world, in 1994. This improvement dramatically increased the efficiency to about 50% from the

previous level of about 30%. Features

Employs a small collector thanks to the high efficiency of the Gyrotron. Creates a compact, low cost, and energy saving power supply unit and cooling unit, thanks to the high efficiency performance of the Gyrotron. Decreases undesirable X rays. Improved high-power performance, thanks to a uniform output distribution. Toshiba's unique long life and high-current-density cathodes. High reliability, based on advanced high-vacuum, and highvoltage technologies created in the development of various type of electron tubes.
