LoudounCountyPublicSchoolsarenowrequiredtohavenonstudentspecificdosesofauto injectableepinephrine,orEpiPens,ineachschoolincaseofastudentssevereallergicreaction. AccordingtoLCPS,legislationpassedbytheGeneralAssemblyearlierthisyearrequiresall publicschoolsestablishpoliciestoacquireandadministerepinephrinetoanystudent experiencingasevereallergicreaction,oranaphylacticreaction,duringtheacademicday.The policyiscurrentlyineffectforthe20122013schoolyear. TheLoudounCountySchoolBoardapprovedPolicy854whichstatesthereneedstobeatleast twononstudentspecificdosesofautoinjectableepinephrineineachschoolforadministration tostudentswhodonothaveapreviouslyidentifiedsevereallergicreaction,accordingtoLCPS. Whattolookfor Commonallergens,accordingtotheLCPSwebsite,includeanimaldander,fish,latex,dairy, shellfish,treenuts,eggs,insectvenom,medications,peanuts,soyandwheat. Somesymptomstolookforasasevereallergicreactionsincludesuddendifficultybreathing, wheezing,hives,generalizedflushing,itchingorrednessoftheskin,swellingofthethroat,lips ortongue,tightnessorchangeofvoice,difficultyswallowing,tinglingsensation,itchingor metallictasteinmouth,feelingofapprehensionoragitation,thewebsitesays. Asevereallergicreactioncanhavemultiplesymptomsandreactionscanvaryfrompersonto person.Nonfooditemssuchasclassroommaterialsandartsorcraftsuppliescouldhave remnantsoffoodproductthatcouldcauseanallergicreaction,thewebsitesays. Notasubjecttobeheldlightly,theLCPSwebsitesaysasevereallergicreactionusuallyoccurs quicklywithinonetotwohoursafterexposureanddeathhasbeenreportedtooccurwithin minutes.Thewebsitealsostatesinaboutonethirdofsevereallergicreactions,theinitial symptomsarefollowedbyadelayofsymptomstwotofourhourslater. Twoautoinjectorswillbesuppliedwiththe0.15mldosageforstudentsweighinglessthan66 pounds,thewebsitesays.Anadditionaltwoautoinjectorswillbeprovidedwiththe.30ml dosageforstudentsweighingmorethan66pounds.Theautoinjectorswillbestoredinthe schoolclinicswheretwoemployees,plustheschoolnurse,willreceivetrainingonhowto administertheepinephrine. Whatparentsshoulddo LCPSsaysparentsofstudentswithknownlifethreateningallergiesoranaphylaxisshould providetheschoolwithwritteninstructionsfromthestudentshealthcareprovideronhandling severeallergicreactionsandnecessarymedicationsforthestudent. Thisnewpolicy,LCPSsays,isnotintendedforastudentwhoalreadyhasanEpiPenorparent providedindividualmedications.Thispolicyalsodoesnotapplytoactivitiesoffschoolgrounds, includingtransportationtoandfromschool,fieldtripsoroutsideoftheacademicday,the policysays. Thenewrequirementcameduringthe2012GeneralAssemblysession.Severalbillswere submittedbystatelegislatorsrequiringthesafetymeasure.Ultimately,therequirementcame fromastatesenatebillintroducedbyRichmondareastateSen.A.DonaldMcEachin(D9th),a FairfaxTimesarticlestates. ThesamearticlesaysthebillwasapprovedunanimouslybyboththeHouseofDelegatesand Senate. Gov.RobertF.McDonnell(R)signedthelegislationinApril,withitbecominglawinJuly.
