Beef and beer event draws crowd
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Washington Twp. Sun
Two hundred and fifteen peo-
ple attended the Jonathan Page
Memorial Scholarship Fund beef
and beer fundraiser, Saturday,
Aug. 25 at the Woodbine Swim
Club in Pennsauken.
Eight silent auctions items,
more than 40 chance auction bas-
kets and a 50/50 auction raised
approximately $10,500 for the
scholarship fund, said Risa Page.
Jonathan Page, 32, a Mer-
chantville native, went to school
at Bishop Eustace Preparatory
school. Page had a love for sci-
ence. He graduated from Cornell
University in 2000 with a degree
in Physics. In 2010, Page and his
wife died in a car accident in Cali-
fornia where they were living at
the time.
The scholarship fund was set
up to honor Page and his love for
science. It was created to provide
scholarships to Bishop Eustace
Preparatory seniors who share
Pages passion.
According to Page, Jons par-
ents, Nancy and Bob Page, were
the first to donate money toward
the inaugural scholarship in 2011.
Risa and her husband, Chris
Page, also contributed toward the
scholarship fund in 2012 by using
favors from their wedding in
June. A group of Jons friends
Special to The Sun
Joe Meloni thanked friends and family for choosing him as the 2012 recipient of the Jonathan Page Memorial Scholarship. He spoke of his
passion for science and said he was honored to help carry on Jon's legacy. Melonis family is seen in the background.

Times are tough tough for
businesses and families. While
there are many things we can cut
back on, the quality of our chil-
drens education is not one of
them. Every classroom needs sup-
plies and while schools provide
most of them, there is typically a
gap between all of the needs for a
classroom and what the school
supplies. To fill in the missing
pieces teachers and parents are
asked to help out.
South Jersey authors, Karen
and Jonathan Fluck, are hosting
a two-week fundraiser with the
goal of providing a basket of sup-
plies to every elementary teacher
in the Washington Township
school district.
Washington Township is our
hometown and we want to sup-
port it, said Jonathan Fluck.
The Flucks will be using sales
generated from their publishing
companys Amazon.com store
from Aug. 25 to Sept. 8. All book
purchases from the Candied Yam
Publishing store on Amazon.com
will be used to fund the supply bas-
kets that they will be donating.
Each book sold will provide
one classroom with a basket of
supplies, said Fluck. These sup-
plies are ones the teacher of that
classroom would have had to pay
for.
Washington Township teach-
ers do a fantastic job of educating
our children. We want to support
them through these donations,
said Karen Fluck. If this
fundraiser has positive feedback,
we'd like to be able to do this a few
more times this school year to
further support the schools.
To participate in this fundrais-
er, purchase any book in the T-Bot
and Peabody Explore series from
Candied Yam Publishing Ama-
zon.com store from Aug. 25 and
Sept. 8. The proceeds will be used
to provide baskets of supplies to
Washington Township elemen-
tary classrooms.

W
ere pretty sure that Repub-
lican Party leaders took a
close look at speeches before
they were delivered at the recent con-
vention. Which makes us wonder how
Chris Christies remarks actually saw
the light of day.
Make no mistake, the governor de-
livered a bang-up speech. He spoke of
values, sacrifice and the future of the
nation and his party. He had people
cheering. If theres one thing Christie
does well, its deliver a speech.
But, in his remarks, that Romney
guy seemed to be an afterthought. It
took a long time for the governor to
even mention the GOP nominee. There
was a lot of stuff about Christie, his
views and his vision, but not a lot
about trying to get Mitt Romney elect-
ed president in November.
Christie took some heat for his re-
marks the day after he delivered them.
Were guessing the heat didnt bother
him one bit.
Christies blunt, tell-it-like-he-sees-it
approach is one of the things people
like about the guy. In an era when al-
most every other politician tailors his
or her speech to whomever they are
speaking to, Christie never leaves a
doubt in anyones mind about what he
thinks. Its not always what people
want to hear. But theres something to
be said for a politician not worrying so
much about being popular and just
speaking his mind.
The governors speech certainly was
an accurate introduction to the rest of
the nation. And it set him up well for a
future presidential run perhaps as
early as 2016 should President Obama
win re-election.
Love him or hate him, Christie defi-
nitely would be an interesting presi-
dential candidate. No one will accuse
him of pandering to special interests.
No one will wonder where he stands on
issues or what he would do if elected.
In these days, where politicians
promise one thing and deliver another,
Christies openness and bluntness set
him apart.
in our opinion
Hi, my name is Chris
Governors convention address sets him up for a future presidential bid
Christie in 2016?
The governors speech at the
Republican National Convention last
week was long on vision and short on
politicking. That might not be great for
Mitt Romney, but it could serve Christie
well in four years.
Hello, everybody. Were so glad to see
you, are the opening lyrics to the welcome
song that begins each Music Together class
in Diane Narleskis Music-in-Me program.
These words ring true for each child and
caregiver who genuinely feels celebrated
as a contributor to the musical community
from the moment they walk into class. At
Music-in-Me, music and movement are the
mediums through which wonder is woven
for each child. From singing, drumming,
and shaking eggs to stomping like a di-
nosaur, members of Narleskis Music-in-
Me classes are growing in ways that re-
main unseen.
My family has been a member of Narles-
kis Music-in-Me for over five years. Music
class has been a weekly part of my daugh-
ters life since before she learned to walk.
Over the years, I have watched my shy, hes-
itant, and careful observer blossom into a
confident 5-year-old singer, songwriter, and
dancer, who incorporates musicality into
every aspect of her day. But music isnt
just something that she does; it has become
part of who she is. From singing her new
baby brother into a state of calm two years
ago to confidently flitting across the stage
at her first ballet recital earlier this sum-
mer, I have seen the power that music has
instilled in her core.
My son was introduced to Narleskis
program as a mere one-month-old. We wit-
nessed him moving to the beat of the
music in his infant-seat, and at three
months, attempt to clap his hands like
members of the class. Both of my children
were early talkers and readers. In a North-
western University study correlating
music training with enhanced verbal com-
munication skills, the data reveals that
the number of years that a person prac-
ticed music strongly correlated with en-
hanced basic sound encoding mechanisms
that are also relevant for speechand en-
gendering literacy skills. I have wit-
nessed these results in my home and at-
tribute their early success in large part to
Music-in-Me.
Narleskis program has truly brought
the program title Music Together to life in
her Music-in-Me studio as each child
learns that music lives around us, but also
resides within us.
Join our family as we continue our mu-
sical journey this fall when we move with
Narleski to her new location at Tuscan Vil-
lage on Route 42. Celebrate with Music-in-
Me at its Open House, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to
12 p.m. There will be demo classes, crafts,
face painting, raffles, and more. Classes are
also offered at Bright Beginnings in Wash-
ington Township and Cherry Hill. For

Mattia asked all residents,
board members, and school staff
to participate in National Dress
Down 4 Pediatric Cancer Day on
Sept. 27.
Stefanacci said she wonders
why there is not as much funding
for pediatric cancer as other
forms of cancer.
No one wants to see a child
suffering, Stefannacii said.
She started the program after
her son, Richard, was diagnosed
with Ewings Sarcoma in 2006.
After battling cancer for one year,
Richard died, but the donations
and awareness raising efforts still
proceeded on.
With only two days left before
the start of Pediatric Awareness
month, Mattia presented all with
a simple question: Does anyone
know what color the pediatric
cancer ribbon is?
The ribbon color is gold.
Gold shoelaces will also be on
sale to help raise money for the
foundation. The shoelaces are $5
each and will go toward local chil-
dren who are suffering from pedi-
atric cancer.
Superintendent Bob Gold-
schmidt immediately approved
the fundraiser. He said a link will
be set up on the districts website
to help spread the word about
both National Dress Down Day
and the shoelace sale.
