The Mask is Coming Off.

Vedere Magazine is shedding light on new artists from across the fashion spectrum. We have chosen to be in an image centric industry that wants everything perfect. While the pursuit of perfection is always the goal, knowing you'll never achieve it is a revelation few will realize. The pursuit is what it's all about.

But in that pursuit, we've ignored many people that are breaking into the fashion and modeling arena. Listening to Paul Fisher at the Mint the other night, his words opened my eyes and more importantly my mind. In essence he said not everyone will walk the runways or be on the cover of Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire or other fashion magazines. But that doesn't mean because you're shorter than the industry standards, or don't have quite perfect body shape you can't model, I have to agree 100%. You can be a model and you shouldn't be taken of advantage by anyone because you don't measure up All the artists you're going to see in this issue are on top of their game. Some of them have minimal equipment, clothing for modeling and time, they are committed to what they do and give 100%. We have some new models that have been modeling for less than a year but the promise for a great future is there. Our photographers come from all over the country including Virginia Beach, Ohio and Arizona. The diverse styles are striking but they all share the creativity behind the camera.

This month we feature many local Arizona events which highlights great designers, MUA's and Hair Stylists. Pushing the limits is not just for the 2 coasts as you'll see inside, we have a lot talent in this state. As a side note, we are always wanting to talk to any designers from anywhere in the world about highlighting your work. It's not time to look back but to move forward. Keep creating and sharing your work. Mike Meadows Publisher

Fashion photography, like any other art form, may have endless interpretations by the viewer, but is still categorized based on finite rules that the artists must follow. Rules in art? Well, they're more like guidelines. Devin Mitchell and I stretch the boundaries of fashion photography, while still keeping true to the one aspect that anchors it to this genre: Lines. Lines create shapes, and the body can create some very interesting shapes. We chose to incorporate very static poses that reflect strong lines, and in turn gives a unique, almost robotic edge, while maintaining a display of emotion in the face. Juxtaposing these two different elements gives this series a very interesting quality. The lack of environment furthers the robotic element of the series, while the colorful fashions and backgrounds, although mostly blank, help it to rise above a purely emotionless state.

Model: Michael Brandt Styled by : Russell Frank

In essence, can we take two things that don't go together, and make them look like they belong together? The answer is, yes... this is art. But again, art is interpretable by the viewer. So the real question is, are you inside, or outside the lines?

Meet Kayla. The Wisconsin native has been modeling for a little over 2 years and she has come a long way. Starting with her first shoot which was in a swim suit to where she is today. She seems like one that cannot be kept down since when she isn't working or in front of the camera she's on the go hiking, surfing, snowboarding or hitting the gym. During our shoot together, you could tell she wasn't one to sit idle for very long. Always coming up with ideas and ready to try new things. She was not afraid to express herself

either, she told me in the beginning she likes talking but she is very upfront and doesn't hold things back. Somehow, after shooting I believe her.

You need to keep your eyes on her in the future she is driven young lady. Her determination is very clear and I have no doubts when she puts her mind to something it happens.

Alex........ Stung the BEE!

Photography by: Russell Klein- Scottdale Images Model: Alex NaHass Car: BumbleBee

An Arizona native, Alex has always loved modeling and the feeling of being beautiful that goes with it. She started her career in print, and while still continuing with that, she's added runway as well. Trying new ideas like lingerie, fashion and crazy, off the wall styles of modeling keeps it all fun. She especially likes doing shoots with a fun theme to them, like the one she's featured in here. Some might argue who is more beautiful, Alex or Bumblebee.... In her spare time she loves hanging out with family and friends, dirt bike riding, going to the dunes four wheeling, and of course ... shopping. Alex also trys her best to be a positive influence in the lives of people she meets. In her own words:"Modeling is so much fun and it opens new doors in life. I just want to keep my experience exciting".

Born in Massachusetts. Raised in single parent home, my father passed away when I was only 5. One brother and one sister. Went to college and graduated in 2009 from Johnson & Wales University with a BS in Network Engineering. Played 2 years of basketball there. Worked for 2 years and decided to drive across to country to Phoenix with my little brother in effort to explore other ways to flourish (We also have family here). Been here since the summer, it was a hot one. It was a tough transition, now I'm back on my feet and working in my industry. Also exploring all realms to find another niche. I play in a basketball league once a week. Currently exploring a side business venture. I coach 5 to 11 year old soccer on Saturday mornings. And I'm continuing to learn how to prosper in life. Other than that. I'm a regular guy trying to make it like anyone else. My ultimate goal is to buy my mother a house and provide financial freedom for my family. I'll get there. Sometimes you have to go and get it.

One of my latest favorite quotes. "If opportunity doesn't knock. Build a door."

Mr. Lee Cypress was born in New York City on January 15, 1984. He moved to Virginia beach at the age of 12 and started writing music and poetry. He found his true passion when he was told by photographer Cornelius Vick http://www.VisionaryImages.biz that he had a good eye and should give photography a try as a career.

This advice inspired him to look at photography with a different approach and he started shooting nature and candids. He started fashion photography because he realized how much an image could be viewed and help sell clothing. He also learned lighting techniques from his mentor, Cornelius Vick http://www.VisionaryImages.biz. Additionally, Mr. Vick also taught him the importance of a good supportive team. He teamed with a makeup artist, Empress Leigh, who enhanced his image and vision through her artistry and has been a strong driving force to his the mes and creativity. Next he found his first muse Ms. Renee M. Harris, who was willing to let him learn from her. Finding his current muse, Ms. Jessica Magary, was a huge turning point in his career because she understands his goals and wants to help him grow as a photographer. He has worked with many local designers such as Vintage Hazel, Demonch Clothing, and Sanise Damone. He has worked with models who are represented by Splash Model management (www.splashmodel.com) and Wright Models (www.wrightmt.com).

Laurel

It took me nearly 3 years to finally get the chance to collaborate with model Laurel Rae, and the wait was well worth it. They say that if you have a great subject you can't go wrong, and that is certainly true with Laurel. This shoot was my first attempt with a high fashion project, and I believe it went fabulous.

My name is Stephanie Lewis, I'm a former model who has turned photographer, with a great ambition to go far in this industry. I don't simply shoot the models I work with, I look to have fun on any project I encounter.

Photographer: Lewis Stephanie Desginer: Rowdy Pink Boutique

As for Laurel, just because your not 5'7, doesn't mean you have to look short or not be photographed for fashion. She is an experienced model, who knows her poses, and exactly what she wants! Laurel has been published multiple times, and has a lot to offer any artist or photo shoot. https://www.facebook.com/ModelLaurel Rae

Modeling is glamorous, enticing, and the flash of the camera bulbs sucks you into the world of fashion. I hear people say as they look up at the model walking the run way Shes so lucky. Some people think that models that get into magazines and shows have it easy and all they have to do is look gorgeous. I have worked many of shows and shoots and know that models work very hard and the modeling world is rough with a lot of competition. The key is to keep going for your goals even if you have been turned down for a show or shoot. The same thing goes for us Makeup Artist. When I first started I was turned down for jobs and got very frustrated. I had people ask me why I do not just give up after being turned down my response I know I can make it so they wont stop me and they are not the only people I am going to introduce you to five top models that I have worked with and in their own words are going to tell you how they have keep going in the fashion world even after they have gotten turned down and what inspires them. These models are Marcel Brown, Nicole Ford, Sandra Wilson, Leslie Weston and Amanda Jackson. I have had the honor to work with all of these hard working models and they sure have earned the title Hard Working.

Marcel La Rae Brown Known in the Model World as "Trinity" Modeling since 2007 - Present I am 38 years old just began my Modeling adventure 5 years ago. I am a Single Mother of 2 Handsome Boys. My Dreams were always to be a Model, however I made the choice to be a Mother at a young age. Now that My Boys are 20 and 15yrs of age. I figured shoot I STILL GOT IT...I always am being old I should be a Model...so I began to start following my dreams. Ive had my share of negative experiences. Getting the wrong types of offers, driving miles to shoots without success, and all those rejections. The worst part of all? Hearing constantly the words: Too old, too old, too old. Or even worse: Shouldnt you do something else at your age? As I did not allow this to stop me from pushing foward. Luckily, I am meeting more and more people who are nice, supportive, inspiring, and appreciative of my work and what I can do. And I am getting more and more jobs!I like to think and hopefully everybody else will feel this way as well that age is just a number. Everybody, no matter what age they are, can be a model. Aging is not a curse, it is a gift of life! And being a model is a great life experience. It is more than just posing for pictures. It is a passion which models and photographers and everybody else in this business shares and understand. This has taught me to never give up on my dreams and goals!!!

Hello, My name is Leslie Weston and I have been perusing modeling for about seven years. When I first started out in the modeling world I was very green, but was determined to be a part of the fashion world. Initially I would go to all kinds of model calls and even visited a couple of model schools to be better at the craft of modeling. There were some turn downs as many companies have a height and weight requirement. However that did not stop me. Sometimes if there is not a path you have to blaze your own trail. The advice that I would like to give other models is to never give up on your dreams. If you want to be a model or anything else in life it is possible. The model world today is so flexible that as long as you have a desire to "WIN" you will. Leslie Weston,

AMANDA JACKSON

NICOLE FORD

My name is Amanda Jackson and I have been modeling for three years. If a model tells you she/he has never been turned down, they are either lying or fairly new to this career. Every model has to deal with rejection, including myself. I was once turned down to be in a show because with a height of 58 and a weight of 115 pounds, the designer said, My fat would rip her dress. I looked at the designer and said, It was great to meet you and I hope you have a wonderful show. People often ask how I deal with being rejected based on physical appearance and how they could never do it. The answer is simple, when I am picked the feeling I get when I walk the runway or seeing an amazing photo after a long photo shoot is worth the pain of rejection. Rejection is difficult but you as a model must have the confidence to overcome it. I have learned that my look will not appeal to every photographer, MUA or designer. I continue to model because when I have children, I want them to know that they can do anything their little hearts desire including becoming a model and I have the pictures to prove it. My advice to models is if you love modeling do not give up, rejection is common and never forget that you are beautiful.

I have been told throughout my modeling career that along with a slender frame, prominent cheekbones, and height well beyond that of the average woman, thick skin is often a requirement for being successful in the fashion industry. Having thick skinor the ability to not be easily offended or brought down by criticismis, in my opinion, one of the most important ingredients for being a successful model. Until just last week, I hadnt yet faced major rejection in my two years of print and runway modeling. I was always prepared for it, but I had been generally accepted, if not commended on my work, thus far. I have walked the runway for several high-end designers, have had quite a few paid photo shoots, and have even been featured in a magazine. In my mind, nothing could stop me, and bigger and better things were already coming my way. For starters, I had been asked to audition for a very large runway event in Washington DC. This could be the event that would take my modeling career to the next level. I had been given an audition spot despite the fact that I am 2 inches shorter than the 59511 runway standard. I was extremely grateful for the opportunity and started to prepare right away. I stuck with an intense workout schedule and a strict diet, and I practiced my walk tirelessly in the tallest heels my feet would allow. There was nothing I wanted more than to be selected for this event. Finally, after over a month of preparation, the day of the

audition arrived. Sure, I was a bit nervous and the adrenaline was pumping, but overall, I felt great. I arrived at the venue early, feeling confident and determined. I turned in a copy of my original application and photos, checked in, and signed several forms. It was then, when I was asked to take my model badge from the table, that I realized how big this event was. I was model 27 out of over 200. After waiting for what seemed like hours, the models were called up to the runway 10 at a time. We were asked to walk one at a time down the runway for the judges and in front of the other auditioning models. I had worked so hard for 10 seconds to prove myself. There was no time for more practice or a warm-up. When my number was called, I stepped up onto the runway and walked. It was quite painless; but little did I know, the pain was yet to come. After the first 40 models walked, the judges called for a short break to call out the numbers of the models who made the cut thus far: 1210131824252628 My heart sank. I hadnt been selected. How? I had worked so hard. Surely they would, at the very least, give me a reason. But no feedback was given. The models whose numbers were not called were asked to leave, and the next group was called up. My mind was working furiouslywhat had I done wrong? Did they not like my hair? Was I not skinny enough? Was I too skinny? I was sure that my walk itself was good, but I couldnt be sure now. For the first few hours after the audition, I was very disappointed in myself. I had been so sure that if I worked hard enough, I would have made the cut. In addition, the fact that I hadnt been told why I wasnt selected made me feel as though it had all been a complete waste. How was I supposed to grow as a model if I didnt know what I needed to improve on? How was this experience going to help me with future auditions? The truth is, rejection will happen in the fashion industry, and it can happen to anyone. Fashion designers, makeup artists, hair stylists, and even top models face criticism and rejection. The key is to not let it get you down. Use it as fuel to try harder. Be open to other peoples opinions, but always be true to yourself. If you are turned down without a reason, use it as a chance to self-reflect. Take a look at every aspect of yourself and see how you can improve. With enough dedication and hard work, good things will come your way! I can honestly tell you that you are your best promoter. Who knows you like you know yourself?

Modeling is one of the hardest industries to be recognized in. It takes confidence, determination, and most of all a strong self-esteem. It has to be a desire that comes from deep inside.

Like many artistic expressions modeling is something you are born with. Dont get me wrong, you can be taught how to pose, walk a runway, or even look like a model. I can tell from the time a model walks in the door if she or he has that something special. It is not arrogance; in fact, it is opposite. Most of the time, the model is humble and willing to do whatever they can to become even better. Modeling is an art form and there are many genres. The Key is to know what genre works for you! SANDRA WILSON

My experience in modeling started when I was 15years old. I was taller than all the girls and boys in my age group. I had red hair, freckles, and was long and lanky. My mom sent me to modeling school because my posture was horrible. I slouched, due to my height. Modeling just clicked for me. It gave me confidence and a boost of self esteem. It wasnt long before I was walking the runway. However, my dream was short lived. I was starting a family by the age of nineteen. I didnt even think about modeling until 25 years later.

Here I am in Richmond Virginia, 47 years old, and looking to build my career in modeling. I knew that my age would be a barrier, but I was determined to get back in the business. While putting my modeling on the back burner, I had acquired a degree in English and Theater, so I knew I could get into the commercial shooting and video recording. I was signed by a talent agency and landed several spots in commercials as an extra. I also signed with a two modeling agencies as well. However, I found that promoting and networking was much more productive. I began to contact magazines, castings, and photographers to get work. I found that they were actually more receptive talking to me directly. I am so fortunate to have the network of friends and professionals in the industry.

I can tell you the key to success in this industry. Are you ready? Network! Get out there and network. Find photographers, models, and people in the fashion industry and talk to them. Most of all find your genre in modeling. Is it runway, commercial, editorial, designing, styling? What is the one area you excel in? What is that one area that you Wow people in? You can do it all, but find that one place you excel, and then do all you can to make it happen! No one will promote you like you promote yourself!

Fashion is not on pins and needles anymore; in fact it has been unraveling its threads through emerging and established designers in the Arizona scene. Our fashion culture is apparent within local arenas that highlight designers, models, stylists, and photographers all alike, but what distinguishes one from another is creative expression of interpretation through ones design and technique. Highlighting the undiscovered and uncovering the discovered will not be a challenge with the abundance of originality that is soaking up the valley of the sun. There is no fabrication about it, from local events to elaborate show casings Arizona has seen its share of remarkable designers and I am here to expose the raw material that makes these talented individuals shine. As the owner of Chrislan Events and I have been introduced to the beauty industry, collaborated with talented local artists and hosted runway events. Event producing allows me to express my passion for local fashion and charities in the valley. This creative detail has been an intricate part of my life, I am well organized, analytical, and pay attention to great detail at a costly fault. Its the true Virgo in me; I am my biggest critic and best enemy when it comes to idealistic thoughts and written impression. Passion for writing and interviewing came to me at the age of nine and continued into my adult years. One of my greatest achievements came last year when I had my first poem published in a literary review titled, I Am My Own Masterpiece. Understanding who I am as a creative person allows me to see the masterpiece in others with unbiased eyes. Personal thought, struggles, achievements, and self-realization intrigues my senses to write about the uncommon stories that may otherwise be left lingering in ones mind. Last August I had the honor of being a celebrity interviewer for the North American Hair Awards (NAHA) in Las Vegas. This fun and exciting adventure sparked a new interest in me as an interviewer, writer, and event spectator. Not only

Christina Moreno

was I exposed to the beauty industry but to the brilliance and talent of business owners that shared their stories of success and achievement. Their stories of struggles and perseverance are testimonials that I want to share with others who may benefit from hearing them. The local talent that I have seen in Arizona is marvelous and has great potential to expand into something larger and greater in the upcoming years. Being a business management degree holder, I had placed writing on the back burner for quite some time. Not realizing that business would play such an important role in my creative thinking and planning. As a native Phoenician, growing up as a child I dreamt of New York City, visualizing that the only place for one to exist in the art and fashion world would be in the building of sky scrapers and corner cafs. As I grew older I learned to appreciate what our city has to offer, it may not be on every street corner but it is apparent in the community from market festivals to fashion shows. Creativeness can come from any part of the world, all one needs is a thought, a pen and the opportunity for one to showcase their story. Phoenix is rising and expanding its wings, the rebirth of new idealism and design will soon be uncovered and naked for you to see. One lesson that I have learned came from my six year old daughter and that is to keep the childlike spirit alive, give the truth, and dream big. As a writer I hope to bring you non synthetic stories that highlight the true essence of Arizona fashion and their creators with a unique perspective for readers to enjoy. Until then I will be undressing, exposing and uncovering the nude uniqueness of the great Arizona fashion scene and its people.

Scottsdale Wedding Walk

Planning a wedding can be a stressful experience. Although I've been lucky to

be married to the same wonderful woman for 30 years, having kids starting their adult lives makes it a big thing on the to do list to find out about what it takes to plan a wedding. Finding the right people to make it happen is always a daunting task unless you went out to the Scottsdale Wedding Walk on Janury 29th. These days "average" weddings are so passe so finding the high end professionals to make sure the special day is just that, special. The quality companies at this event were to say the least, the best of the best. This is not the place to look to cut corners (although many said they are very reasonable for the quality they offer). I know as a Dad, I was a little faint at some of the investment figures I heard, but then realized that's exactly what it is, an investment in my little girls future. Ok, the guy she's marrying also.

Dreams are made to come true and help the newlyweds start with great memories. Starting correctly and taking away as much of the stress as possible is must to usher them off into their new lives together.

If you didn't make it out to the Scottsdale Wedding Walk, may I suggest you take a look at the premier companies on www.scottsdaleweddingwalk.com to see all the information along with links to these awesome companies. Remember, it's an investment you make only once for your children. Make the dreams come true.

ANIMAL ROYALE

Presented by: Jen Deveroux & The Alternative Fashion Society

OK, I'm going to admit it, Alt Fashion is new to me and I never know what to expect when I attend one of these shows. Being so "mainstream" in my thinking and my preferences I have to admit there was more than one time during the runway shows I dropped the camera to my hip just to take in what was being presented. Being known to scratch my head a lot, (no not dandruff), I was amazed at the creativity and the pure in your face styles.

The Line Up of the Night.

1. HAUS OF STARDUST 2. ORDI & ELI 3. STICKER CLUB GIRL 4. VAULTED CLOTHING LABEL 5. MISSCONSTRUED -INTERMISSION(ACT II)

The venue for the show was the Crescent Ballroom at 308 N. 2nd Ave in Phoenix. Never being there before I was wondering what challenges the location would offer. I was pleasantly surprised, big venue with a good size stage and "t" runway. Since us photogs spend most of our time in the pit, it was nice having 2 of them to spread out the crowd of photogs. I will say during the show, the smoke machine was trying to replicate a foggy night in London, which would have been great if we didn't have cameras in our hands. Regardless, we did get good shots from both ends of the runway. Personal note, I don't know how models do it with the all the flashes, I would have been on the laps of the VIP guests after the first round of flashes going off. As always, Nelson Hawks directed the show to be on point as much as he could, c'mon we are dealing with creaitve people here! The host, MC PUMA, kept the room in the moment and made sure the crowd suppressed the ADHD moments during the slower times of the evening. From the crowd I saw, he had his job cut out for him and did it admirably. The music was always on time and added to the designs on the runway so a shout out to DJs JC, Jared Alan, Tricky T & Sean Watson.

6. CATRINA LaDELL 7. HELL ON HEELS COUTURE 8. SETAMITNI By: KELLY CALABRESE 9. PIERCED HEART

Now I'm not a fashion critic, and even though I've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express many times I will not even try to offer comments on the designs except to say, duct tape, nipples....really? OUCH!. I give a shout out to all the designers and what they presented, visionaries come in many forms and all of these talented people are the true sense of the word.

Publishers Note:

I'm sure some will question our coverage of this event as it's not mainstream in some definitions but in the end everyone needs a place to have their voice heard and visions seen. Appreciate the creativity and dedication all of these individuals put forth, appreciate their voices and vision.

The one horse town has finally grown up. No longer are we a fly over city when it comes to modeling and fashion. Paul Fisher of the CW program reModeled was in town for the airing of the episode featuring Courtier Model and Talent Management of Scottsdale.

If you've watched the program you know Paul, with the attitude set aside, is a man on a mission in the modeling industry. Organizing a network of agencies that will treat all models with the respect they deserve but also letting them know the reality of the industry. Not everyone is walking the runway in NYC but they can still be successful if they are willing to work hard, learn the craft and art along with having a proven agency behind them. For this, with all his blustering, Paul is actually a man that cares and knows how to get the job done.

The men of Courtier appear to have a plan and with the lead of Paul can make things happen in this city for the models they represent. While they are relatively new to the industry you can tell they have the heart and soul to make it happen in a big way. Knowing a couple of the models from previous shoots, I can tell you they have nothing but the highest regard for Courtier. If you missed the episode party, you missed an eye opener of what's going on in the Phoenix Market. We've been a top 12 market in the broadcast industry for awhile, I have the feeling with Paul and Courtier in the hunt, the fashion/modeling industry is about to take notice, you can fly over us to either coast but you do so at your own peril. Take heart models, you have some champions on your side.
