Course Objectives: This course is intended to provide the foundation for more detailed studies of the mechanical, physical and chemical behaviour of materials and the proper selection of materials for design purposes. This introductory course focuses on the fundamental nature or science of materials, i.e., atomic, molecular and crystal structuresand chemical bonding effects as the building blocks of all materials. Details of evaluation and analysis of structural characteristicsof materials are presentedand how theserelate to the responseof materials to various environments. Course Organization: I semesterterm 3 hr lecture per week I hr laboratory per week (2 hr laboratory in alternateweeks)
