Sensor

Product Details Luxsense is a light sensing device, meant to be integrated into the down-lighting luminaire, thus adding a regulating function in combination with a regulating ballast. Luxsense can be clicked on the lamp, using a special clip. It can also be clicked to the end lamella of the optic, using a special bracket, to be provided by the luminaire manufacturer. Luxsense can control up to 20 regulating electronic ballasts of the Philips HFR range. Luxsense can be manually adjusted by a rotating diafragm, in order to adjust the setpoint. The controller is connected to the 1-10 Vdc control input of the Philips HFR ballast

Applications Luxsense is designed to save energy by compensating for excess lighting levels caused by overdesign of the lighting system (e.g. 600 lux installed, 500 lux required) and/or ingressing daylight. Energy saving is realized by reducing the output of the artificial light. The sensor is optimized for use in applications with 600 lux installed and 500 lux required with an assumed reflexion factor of the room of 30%. Actual circumstances may differ. To compensate for this, the sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted manually over a range from 1/3 to 3. Therefore the minimum required reflection factor of the room must be 10% which is met by most practical conditions. Proper control operation is based on the condition that Luxsense controls at least 80% of the artificial light it sees. This can be critical in applications including a high amount of indirect light from other luminaires.

Manual Adjustment The setpoint of the sensor can be changed manually by using the rotary control ring on the front, which influences the diafragm. The housing is equipped with an indication of the default setting.

Note: this manual adjustment facility should preferably only be used in the commissioning phase, not by the users of the room.

Commissioning A separate document is available that describes the commissioning process in detail. In short the steps are: Find a room in the building that can be considered to be representative for the whole building. Install the luminaires with daylight control in this room and convince yourself that the installed light level and the required light level are reasonably close to each other (within 30% range, say 600 lux and 500 lux respectively). Light levels should be measured on the table, preferably without daylight contribution (e.g. at night). Manually adjust the rotary control such that the required light level is realized. Memorize the position of the control ring. Instruct installer to copy the position of the rotary control ring of every luminaire to be installed in comparible circumstances.

Luxmeter 500 lux

Note: The factory setting is such that in normal office environments, no adjustment with the rotary control is required. Application Warnings The lightsensor, LRL1220, represents a basic, straight forward solution to save energy. When applied with care as described in this document, it will preform its function properly. This lightsensor should however not be used in the following applications: When light levels are required with a higher accuracy then 10% of the desired value. In that case, sensors and controllers with a higher performance should be used. When the required light level is significantly lower than the installed level, e.g. more than 30% lower. In that case a dimming device should be installed instead. When the construction of the building is such that a large variety of rooms exist, both in shape and decoration, leading to individual fine tuning per room during commissioning. In that case, controls with optimized commissioning tools should be used.

Control characteristics The control characteristics are described in the graph. The lightsensor roughly compensates for 50% of the ingressing daylight by dimming the artificial light output, until the minimum output is reached (3% for Philips HFR)

Instructions for luminaire construction The lightsensor can be mounted in the luminaire either by clicking on the lamp, or by fixing it to the end lamella. Mounting on the lamp This is an option for all luminaires with a direct line of sight between the lamp and the floor of the room. The lamp clip LRH 1221 should be used in case of TLD lamps, LRH 1222 in case of TL5. The sensor can easily be clicked into the lampclip. The unit must be located: At the (eletrical) cold side of the lamp. This is the side of the lamp that is connected to the terminals of the ballast that allow for the longest wiring to the lamp. A distinct cold side is usually clearly marked on ballasts using the half-bridge principle (e.g. all Philips HF ballasts). As close to the end cap of the lamp as possible, but at least 7 cm away from that end cap Please note: It is not allowed to use lamp clips with TL5 HO (high output) lamps, due to their high lamp surface temperatures. Metal mirror-optics shall be properly connected to earth (TLD and TL5 applications). Mounting on the lamp is an option only for luminaires that do not obscure the sensitivity opening angle. Mounting on the end lamella As an alternative, the receiver can be mounted on the end lamella. This requires a special mounted bracket, to be provided by the luminaire manufacturer. It must be strictly avoided that the sensitivity opening angle is obscured by the optics or construction parts of the luminaire. Mounting at the (electrical) cold side of the lamp is recommended.
