KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS


To be responsible for the operational and line management of an editorial team To lead the editorial development and coordinate implementation of client communication programmes with a focus on key messages, content and overall quality of all materials To be responsible for team development and training, identifying training needs and coordinating support and development programmes where required, including induction programmes, progress monitoring and appraisal To lead and provide scientific/product/therapy area review and direct scientific content development and consistency in designated programmes within and across teams To review resource requirements and work with relevant colleagues to ensure satisfactory resourcing of allocated programmes Together with relevant colleagues in the Wells business units, to provide both tactical and strategic contribution, helping to build client and KOL advocacy and helping Wells clients to fulfil their marketing and strategic objectives This will include writing and input into a wide range of printed and multimedia materials and mentoring of all writers within the project team

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Work closely with the Business Unit Head, London, to match resource requirements to programme needs Act as the primary editorial contact for the Wells team on projects and programmes of work Responsible for the development and training of the assigned editorial team, identifying training needs and coordinating development programmes Help develop and implement strategic communications programmes in close collaboration with the client and client service teams

Research, write (from brief and outline through to finished product), edit and proof copy to the highest standard (scientific and grammatical) for a full range of educational materials and target audiences Accurate and precise implementation of client/author amendments Mentor less experienced writers and contribute to training where appropriate Provide on-site expertise to meet client/Wells requirements including writing/editing/ production, faculty support, A/V, data gathering, general assistance Assist with and make presentations where necessary to clients, speakers, third party organisations

10. Provide medical and scientific advice, expertise and consultancy in areas of main strength, internally and externally 11. Establish, develop and maintain opinion leader relationships and advocacy 12. Help in the use and management of freelance writers, including briefing and monitoring of projects being worked by freelance writers 13. Together with the Directors, Client Services, to contribute proactively to new business development for existing and new clients. Assist in the development of proposals. Play an active role in preparation and delivery of pitches and presentations 14. Science review and quality control of copy for other medical writers across the department 15. Supporting team delivery of key tactical communications materials

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Educated to PhD level in the life or physical sciences In depth knowledge of at least three therapy areas and the ability to quickly grasp additional areas At least 4+ years previous editorial experience in an integrated medical communications environment working with leading pharmaceutical groups, including experience of line management of writers Proven project and man-management skills, with excellent people management ability. Knowledge and experience of all aspects of commercial writing and broad editorial skills, with in depth Strategic & Scientific experience. Experience of creating and delivering strategic publication plans Broad strategic planning and business development experience Excellent scientific writing ability with ability to adapt for different target audiences To be considered as a scientific expert both by clients and colleagues and be adept at client liaison and relationship building

10. Experience with a wide range of media including print, video, multimedia and web-based work 11. Confidence in managing clients/authors 12. Ability to mentor less experienced staff both within the editorial department and in other departments, drawing on previous experience 13. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead a small project team 14. Ability to adapt quickly to a wide range of therapeutic areas

15. Full awareness of budgetary implication, ability to contribute to budgeting and proposal development 16. Attention to detail style/consistency, grammar, syntax, scientific accuracy, layout, etc. 17. In-depth knowledge of a number of therapeutic areas, medical products and the pharmaceutical industry and how to use this knowledge within the area of medical communications 18. Excellent project/time management and organisational skills 19. IT skills (including MS Office, EndNote, database searching, Internet use) 20. Deliver material conforming to current in-house procedures through correct use of templates in MS Office, EndNote, version control, style guides, naming conventions. To instruct others in their correct use 21. Quality control of copy and guidance for other medical writers across the editorial department 22. Familiarity with code of practice guidelines for medical copy/copyright issues 23. Familiarity with drug development process and regulatory guidelines 24. Confidence in presentation skills
