ettectiTel1 used for direct fire.
Able Oompany, after a short rest in the Batta110n area

It haa been found that te.l:.kS are ht:lpless on icy roads p;:).d frozen

al'ld placed grousers on all track laying vehicles wi trJ.n the battelion. Steel
tracks are esp ecially hazardous on icy roads. Rubber chevron tracks are the
most ideal for any type of W6:lther or l,errain.
During the early part of the month a maintenance creN of Service
Company went forward and replaced rootors in tnree tanks of CO'qlany A that were
in forwar-l p05itions. Due to road condition, and -che tactical eituation, it
was inlpossi ble to return the -;ehic les to the ree.r as would normally be done.
I,t was necessary T.o bring the !!lotors up durb2 darkness as the roads
leading to tank pC3i tio11s were exposed to enemy observation. This work was
done behind a ridge at SAVIGNANA just a fe'll thousand yards from the front
line. The work was accomplished in three days under severe wea.ther handicap
and occassional enemy mortar and artillery fire.

22 January 1944, subject as above, file AD 314-AW, the follow
ing report is submitted:

The arrival of saw first the end of the war in
Italy and Austria and finally 'the complete and unconditional
surrender of all enemy troops throughout Europe to the Allied
Forces. As an anti-climax to the end of the war new problems
arose and by mid-month the battalion was moving to new tact1cal
positions to be ava1lable should the controversy over the bound- \
ary and occupational issue 1n Trieste between the Yugoslav1an
Partisan troops and the Al11es reach the crit1cal stage.
On the f1rst day of the month the four line compan1es,
the assault gun platoon, and the Forward Battal10n Command Post
assembled in the of Treviso (G586793) while the Rear
C.P. and Service Company were in the process of mOVing to that
area. Before this regrouping could be completed, however,
orders were received detaching the battalion from the 91st Inf
antry Division and putting it with the 85th Infantry Division
as the armored element of various task forces which were
'continuing the attack to the North and Northeast. For this
operat1on, "All Compa.ny was attached to the 3,9th InfantIt Regi
ment with one _platoon of light tanks from "D Company. B" Com
pany was designated to work with the 338th-Infantry and Com
pany with another l1ght tank platoon from "D" Company was sent
to the 337th Regiment. Company Commanders alerted their compan1es
and contacted the Regimental Commanders and 8-3 sect10ns to
make the necessary reconnaissances and work out plans for the
attack.
2nd found the attacking forces moving northward
through the pouring rain and against little if any resistance.
- 1
The situation remained as flu1d as it had been 1n the prev10us
days of the current offens1ve. Hundreds of pr1soners were
being taken da1ly w1thout fir1ng a round and along all routes
of advance thouaands of small arms of all types and calibre and
hundreds of knocked-out and 1mmob1lized vehicles and dead horses
were strewn along the roads -- silent testimony to the efficiency
of the artillery and air corps and the effectiveness of the pene
trating power, speed and encircling maneuvers of the armored
columns. Across the whole front ciDies, towns and v11lages were
falling momentarily to the assaulting columns as they raced
across the northern Po Valley and into the foothills of the Alps
cutt1ng otf any possible escape routes to the Naz1 "Inner Fortress"
in the Alps.
Early 1n the even1ng of May 2nd, Task Force commanders
were notif1ed by higher headquarters to halt the1r attacking
forces and await further orders. Shortly thereafter, word was
received that all e n e ~ troops 1n Italy and Austr1a had surrenM
dered uncond1t1onally to the Allied arm1es and that the war in
Italy was ended. Loca.l security was posted around the now stat
ionary columns and tired and wet tank and 1nfantry men found what
little shelter they could, cooked a hasty supper, and went to bed.
-There was 11ttle celebrating.
The following days were spent moving northward through
German occupied rear areas, marshall1ng points, and supply dumps
and securing the Austr1an border. On May 4th Companies "c" and
"D" with a Reg1mental Combat Team of the 339th Infantry moved
from the v1cinity ot Sesto (B630950) near the Austr1an border,
to Vlpetento, ten miles south of the Brenner Pass and made con
tact w1th elements of the American Seventh Arl!J'3. Company "A" was
employed as secur1ty in the mountain v1llage of San Cand1do
(B680950). "B" Company was used as an occupat1on force 1n the
area north of Verona. .
On May 9th and 10th the battaiion'less "A" C o ~ a ~
moved to the vicinity of Belluno, Italy (B56628l) wh1le B" Com
pany assembled about ten miles to the west in Feltre.
As an anti-cl1max to the' end of the war, trouble seemed
imminent in the Trieste sector. Marshall Tito and the Yugoslave
Partisan troops had without orders from the Allied Command occUw
pied the city and 1ts' surround1ng v1c1nity and 1ntimated that
he planned to hold th1s terr1tory. Prepar1ng tor any eventual
ity which may arise from the s1tuat10n the 91st Infantry D1v1s
10n was moved to Gorizla (0705065) and th1s battalion on orders
from II Corps was moved on May 18th to Manzano (0524115) and
attached to the 91st. "D" Company remained 1n Belluno with the
85th Division. For this movement "A" Oompany was brought trom
7
:: 4 52 !>P'
---
San Candido to the Battalion Assembly area where all full-tracked
vehicles were mnnted on tank transporters for the hundred mile
Journey.
-1
Upon arrival at Manzano Company "Au was attached to
the 363 Regiment, Company "B" to the 362, and Company "c" to the
361. All companies moved out and assumed tact10al positions in
support of the infantry.
On May 23rd, II Corps detached "B" Company from the
91st and sent them to the lOth Mounta1n D1v1sion which had taken
up positions North of Udine. One week later, on }fAY 30th, t'B"
Company was relieved by other armored elements and reverted to
batta110n control.
Although the war had been officially declared over
throughout Europe, this new situation in Tr1este required constant
attent10n and the utmost surveillance of troop conduct and be
hav10r as the slightest disturbance in the v1cinity of the Yugo
slavian troops may be the only spark neoessary to bring forth an
even more complicated situation than already exists.
Until the matter 1s settled by higher commands, however,
there is little the battalion has to do except wait and spend
free time on maintenance, training schedules, and sport and enter
tainment programs. Each individual was primarily concerned with
the recently announoed point sIstem for redeployment and how it
would affect him. Those with 85 or more points wondered when
they would be headed home while those w1th less than 85 points
were concerned w1th the possibility of remaining in the Army of
Occupation or returning "home before going to the Pacifio. At
months end all problems remained unsolved.
