Gov. to Lead Israel Trade Mission Gov. O'Malley is leading a delegation of business and civic leaders on an eight-day economic development mission to Israel in late November. Organized by the Maryland Israel Development Center, the mission to Israel will boost trade and investment and promote Maryland as the ideal location to establish U.S. operations. The Governor will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and speak alongside Israel's Chief Scientist Avi Hasson at the Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy and Innovation Conference. More mission highlights include a breakfast reception for high-tech Israeli entrepreneurs and a visit with senior leadership at ELTA Systems Ltd., one of Israel's leading defense electronics companies which just opened a facility in Maryland. UM Awards $4M to Tech Projects In an effort to bring promising technology to the commercial marketplace by teaming local companies with university researchers, the University of Maryland's Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program awarded $4 million to 19 technology development projects. MIPS contributed $1.5 million of the grant money and the companies involved in the projects contributed the remaining $2.5 million. MIPS is part of the Maryland Technology Enterprise Institute and the A. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland,

Harford Gains U.S. HQ of Tech Firm London-based Smith's Detection, will consolidate its U.S. headquarters into its recently expanded 100,000 squarefoot Edgewood facility, adding 100 jobs over the next two years to the 225 there already. The defense contractor builds scanners and other products that detect and identify explosives, chemical and biological agents, radiological and nuclear threats, narcotics, weapons and contraband. DBED will provide a $750,000 loan to support the expansion and Harford County's Office of Economic Development will extend a training grant of up to $100,000. Developing Next Gen of Vaccines Vaxin Inc., a clinical stage company developing the next generation vaccines, has moved operations from Birmingham, Alabama to an office in Gaithersburg. The move provides better access to venture capitalists and to federal research centers as the company remains focused on protecting the public against influenza and anthrax infection. Last year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded Vaxin a $14.7 million grant to further develop novel, easy to administer, safe vaccines against anthrax. Preparing Students for Success Two Montgomery County high schools are the first in Maryland and among the first in the nation authorized to use the new International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate program. Designed to better prepare students for college or the workplace, the program combines rigorous courses with opportunities for students to gain the skills they need to succeed in the 21st century. Students at Watkins Mills can begin coursework with the program this fall and Rockville is preparing to offer the program during the next school year.

Hollywood Hits Ocean City Independent film "Ping Pong Summer" starring Susan Sarandon, will begin six weeks of filming this month in Ocean City. Written and directed by Maryland native Michael Tully, the coming-of-age comedy, is set during the 1980's and is based on Tully's annual vacations to the beach. The Maryland Film Office estimates that the economic impact of the project for the State will be approximately $2 million and could result in the hiring 90 local crew, actors and extras, and the purchase or renting goods and services from over 140 local businesses. Save the Date for Small Biz Forum Join the Governor's Commission on Small Business September 27 for a town hall meeting at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center beginning at 10 a.m. The event is a free and open forum for Maryland's business community and attendees will have the opportunity to meet Commission members, discuss ways for government and business community to promote job creation, and dialogue directly with State Agency leaders and economic development officials.
