IMPACT 3.0 FAQs

Friday August 3rd, Chancellor Kaya Henderson announced changes to DCPSs IMPACT teacher
evaluation system for the 2012-2013 school year, also known as IMPACT 3.0.
Can Washington Teachers Union bargain on these changes?
As you may recall, the Washington Teachers Union has no legal right to bargain the IMPACT
teacher evaluation system. However, there has been constant dialogue between Chancellor
Henderson and President Saunders.
What are the changes to the evaluation system?
Less Reliance on Student Test Scores
Next school year, student performance on the D.C. CAS will count for 35 percent of your
evaluation score.
Fewer Classroom Observations
The number of observations has been reduced from five to four and all teachers will have one
informal observation that is designed to assist you to become a better teacher and will not count
towards your IMPACT score.
Less Anxiety for Top Teachers
Teachers who consistently receive an Effective or Highly Effective rating can receive even
fewer observations to help eliminate the anxiety that many good teachers may feel.
Ever-Changing Expectations
An Effective rating now begins at 300. Scores between 250-299, which were previously
Effective, are now placed in the category of Developing. Three years of a Developing rating
will result in termination.
Who can I talk to about this?
Share your concerns with the Chancellor and local stakeholders by taking WTUs IMPACT 3.0:
What Do You Think? survey or leave a comment on the WTU Teachers Lounge blog
(wtuteacherslounge.org)

LIFT FAQs

What is LIFT?
Leadership Initiative for Teachers, or LIFT is a new initiative to help recognize and retain great
teachers which includes a five-stage career ladder that provides high-performing educators with
opportunities for advancement both inside and outside the classroom, as well as additional
compensation and increased recognition.
How does LIFT work?
LIFT has five career stages: Teacher, Established Teacher, Advanced Teacher, Distinguished
Teacher, and Expert Teacher.

As teachers move up the career ladder, they will become eligible for additional leadership
opportunities, additional compensation, and a reduction in the number of evaluative classroom
observations.
How do I advance up the LIFT ladder?
Teachers annual performance evaluations under the IMPACT system will determine movement up
the LIFT stages. To move from Teacher to Established Teacher, an educator must earn one
Highly Effective rating or two consecutive Effective ratings. The same is true to move from
Established to Advanced. To move to the higher stages, teachers must earn two Highly Effective
ratings.

LIFT FAQs

How is my initial LIFT stage determined?

All teachers will be placed in a LIFT stage at the beginning of the 20122013 school year. If you
taught in DCPS during the 20112012 school year, your starting LIFT stage is determined by your
prior IMPACT ratings.

How will my compensation increase over time with LIFT?

Through LIFT, DCPS is expanding the base salary component of IMPACTplus to reward more
teachers in new ways:
For the first time, teachers who earn consistent Effective* ratings will be eligible for base salary
increases of up to $9,000 at the Advanced Teacher stage.
Base salary increases will now be tied to LIFT stages with increases at the Advanced,
Distinguished, and Expert Teacher stages for teachers in high-poverty schools.
All Effective and Highly Effective teachers will continue to earn the annual step increases outlined
in the Washington Teachers Union contract. However, at the Advanced, Distinguished, and Expert
Teacher stages, teachers will earn significantly larger base salary increases.
How will LIFT benefit veteran teachers?
In addition to various leadership opportunities, LIFT has the potential through IMPACTplusto
increase annual compensation for veteran teachers beyond the pay scale maximum of
$106,540.00 to $131,540.00.
