About 6.7 Release

TEMS LinkPlanner is Ascoms tool for radio link transmission planning. It is a powerful PC-based tool for designing and optimizing radio transmission networks. TEMS LinkPlanner supports integrated planning of point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks. TEMS LinkPlanner helps the transmission engineer to design and roll-out a network with the desired quality and availability to the right cost. It assists the user in planning a radio transmission network that easily can be expanded in the future. Quality and availability in existing networks can be evaluated and the networks can be re-designed, optimized, and expanded in an efficient way. TEMS LinkPlanner includes advanced algorithms such as the latest ITUrecommendations and other well-known radio algorithms, as well as Ascom-developed algorithms and concepts for radio transmission planning. For more information about TEMS LinkPlanner, please see TEMS LinkPlanner Technical Product Description. This document describes the product content of TEMS LinkPlanner 6.7.0.

Please visit our Support web site, www.ascom.com/tems, TEMS support, for the latest technical information, FAQs and downloads of patch releases.

Installation and Upgrading

The installation and upgrading procedure is described in detail in the TEMS LinkPlanner Installation Guide and Installation Note. The database format is updated to support new features. The data in the database must be migrated to the 6.7 format either by exporting/importing data or by converting the database to the new format.

2.1

Migration of paths with frequency diversity

Frequency diversity was earlier (TEMS LinkPlanner 6.5) modeled as the frequency difference between the operating channel and the protecting channel. In this release, the actual channel for the protecting channel can be defined and this channel will also be included in the far-end interference analysis. If a TEMS LinkPlanner project, from an earlier release than 6.6, includes paths with frequency diversity, a new configuration <Default 1+1>will be created during the import. The configuration <Default 1+1> will be assigned to all paths with frequency diversity. The frequency difference defined in the import project will be used in TEMS LinkPlanner 6.7 until a specific protecting channel is assigned to the path. The frequency difference can be included in the Path Quality Report. Paths with frequency diversity can be identified in the Network Report by selecting the field Diversity.

News in TEMS LinkPlanner 6.7

Support for Adaptive Modulation

TEMS LinkPlanner 6.7 supports planning of microwave links with Adaptive Modulation. A microwave link with Adaptive Modulation uses a high modulation scheme with a high capacity throughput for most of the time. The modulation is stepped down to a lower modulation scheme with lower capacity when the link experiences fading, as, for example, when there is heavy rain. Typically, the lower modulation schemes will only be used for a very small percentage of the time and the overall effect is a huge increase in available capacity. To be able to increase the available capacity can result in huge cost savings, and that is not the only option. Adaptive Modulation can also be used to minimize the antenna sizes and to optimize spectrum usage, two ways of lowering the total cost of the network if the higher capacity is not needed. In TEMS LinkPlanner the requirements for the different modulation schemes can be defined and a set of modulation schemes is assigned to the radio. The Quality and Availability for the lowest Modulating and Coding Scheme (MCS) and the capacity for the link over the year are calculated.

Select MCS set in the Define menu to MCS set. Check Adaptive Modulation in path form

5.2

Automatic Transmit Power Control

Support for Automatic Transmit Power Control (ATPC) is added in TEMS LinkPlanner 6.7 for point-to-point connections. In the microwave link, this is done by automatically adjusting the transmitted signal level to reach the wanted receiver signal level during fading events for example, when it rains. The overall results are lower interference levels in the network and improved Quality and Availability. With the ATPC support in TEMS LinkPlanner you can optimize the upper and lower output power levels to reach the Quality and Availability targets for the link. The power levels are calculated for a percentage of the Quality and Availability target. The output power levels are compared with the radio equipment physical output power limits. The lower power level is used in the far-end interference calculation and the upper power level is used in the Path Quality calculation.

Set Radio power limits for ATPC by clicking on the power limits button in the radio form. Select Upper/Lower limit Get both button in path form to calculate the output power

5.3

Optimize output power level - RTPC

In a microwave network it is beneficial to keep down the output power levels as much as possible but still reach the Quality and Availability targets for the link. In TEMS LinkPlanner, the optimum output power for Remote Transmit Power Control (RTPC) can be calculated based on the Quality and Availability targets for the link. In the same way as for ATPC, the output power levels are compared with the radio equipment physical output power limits.

5.4

Enable/disable correlated fading

A correlated interferer signal is one that travels along the same approximate path as the wanted signal to a certain receiver, and thus can be assumed to experience the same fading conditions. The TEMS LinkPlanner Far Interference calculation will automatically detect correlated interferers, and can reduce the net contribution from these in accordance with the fading experienced by the wanted signal: The correlated threshold degradation is calculated with respect to the actual correlation of each interference contribution. This gives a most likely estimate of the degradation. The uncorrelated threshold degradation is calculated without considering correlation, i.e. all interferers are taken at their unfaded signal strength. This gives a worst case estimate of the degradation. The TEMS LinkPlanner Quality calculation will use the preferred threshold degradation values from the Far Interference calculation. For each of the flat multi path, rain, and refraction fading mechanisms the user can select whether correlation should be considered or not: If correlation is considered, the correlated threshold degradation will be used for the fading mechanism. This gives a most likely fading prediction. Otherwise, the uncorrelated threshold degradation will be used. This gives a worst case fading prediction. The TEMS LinkPlanner path form will show all correlated paths in a separate window. A correlated path is a path that would give at least one correlated interference contribution, should the path appear as an interferer in a Far Interference calculation.

5.5

Conditional XPD outage calculation

It is now possible to make the Rain and Clear-Air XPD outage calculation for only dual polarized antennas. When Dual polarized antenna only is enabled and the configuration Dual polarized antenna is used for a path, Rain XPD and Clear air XPD are
Ascom (2009) Document: LZT 108 5206/1 R7B 9(23)

calculated. When it is enabled and other antenna configurations are used, Rain XPD and Clear air XPD are set to zero. When Dual polarized antenna only is disabled, Rain XPD and Clear air XPD are always calculated, regardless if configuration Dual polarized antenna or other antenna configurations are used.

Check Dual polarized antenna only to calculate conditional XPD outage.

5.6

Advanced display of reflections

The Path Profile window has been updated with a new, more advanced display of reflections, and several different display combinations of the Path Profile window are now available. It is also possible to vary the k-value and see the effect on the reflections. The main reflection display options are: Show reflection points for ground level (general or based on locus curve), 2nd Fresnel zone or Air layer Show Blocked and Non-blocked reflections Show reflections for selected land usage codes

Other display options are:

8.1

Corrections in release 6.7.0

Multi user setup: Not possible to edit public data

The following corrections were included in release 6.7.0.

This information relates to multi user system setup only. Previously it was sometimes possible to edit some public data, such as propagation parameters, reset threshold degradation and add comments from template. This has now been corrected.

8.2

Radio terminal state report filter is now working properly

Previously, the state of service filter function in the radio terminal state report dialog did not work correctly. This has now been corrected.

8.3

Far interference calculation disabled for paths without channels

The far interference calculation is now disabled when selecting paths without channels assigned.

8.4

Path profile reflections may appear to "hang in the air"

In TEMS LinkPlanner 6.6 the drawing of reflection points in the path profile window could sometimes give the impression that the reflection points where not at ground level. This was more noticeable for rough profiles. This has now been corrected.

8.5

Licensing system not behaving as expected after commuted license expired

When a commuted license has expired and TEMS LinkPlanner is started, the licensing system should be reset to normal operation. In some cases this was not done. This behaviour has now been corrected.

8.6

K-value statistics entries not displayed correctly in GUI

Under some circumstances, the k-values statistics tables failed to be displayed in the refraction tab, found under propagation in the default table setup. This has now been corrected.

Ascom (2009)

Document: LZT 108 5206/1 R7B

20(23)

8.7

Network view filter for Capacity corrected

The network view filter could sometimes produce unexpected results when selecting capacity. This has now been corrected.

8.8

Interfered paths color not reset properly when resetting threshold degradation

If the far interference dialog was open when the threshold degradation was reset, the color of the interfered paths in the map window was not updated correctly. This has now been fixed.

8.9

Selection of interferers for Frequency Allocation Support now consistent with far end interference

One of the criteria for selecting the transmitters that should be included in the frequency allocation support interference calculation is distance. Previously the calculation of distance between the transmitters selected for analysis and possible interferes included more interferers than the far interference calculation. The frequency allocation support distance calculation has been changed to be more consistent with the far interference calculation.

8.10

Possible to connect radio terminals to another sector with multiple radio terminal edit

It is possible to connect radio terminals to sectors using the Multiple Radio Terminal Edit function. In TEMS LinkPlanner 6.6.3, this function only worked for one radio terminal. It is now possible to use this function for several radio terminals.

Limitations and known bugs in 6.7.0

Near Interference can only be calculated for paths with the configuration 1+0. A message will be displayed when a near interference calculation is requested for paths that have a configuration with more that one channel assigned. It will list the paths that have configurations with more that one channel assigned. Workaround: Model the network with one path per channel.

Print-outs of the map with obstacle data displayed must be done on a color printer. The background will be printed black on a black & white printer. It is not possible to manually remove the calculated threshold degradation in the Path form-RadioSystem-Threshold degradation window. Even if the value is changed to 0 is the calculated value for that site (endpoint of path) stored in the database and taken into consideration in the path calculation. Work around: Use Multi Edit- Reset threshold degradation instead and the calculated value disappears.

When a Q&A target based on G.821 is assigned to the path, the ATPC/RTPC "Get Tx power" functions return the error message "No data record found (Q&A target)" and you are unable to perform the calculation. Work around: Use G.826 or G.828 instead. Support for G.821 will be added in TEMS LinkPlanner 6.8.

If a dual polarized antenna is selected on a path will that not be taken into account when displaying information about used polarization. This is valid in network report, network views and labels. Only vertical will be displayed for path using both vertical and horizontal polarization. Both polarizations are taken into account in all calculations.
