Complaints over the taste and
odour of potable water in Gleichen
have gone down since last fall. It
was late last September when Da-
vid Churchill, Manager of Transpor-
tation and Infrastructure for Wheat-
land County, came to council with
a possible solution to the water is-
sues.
A new product, SHAC Ponder, has
been approved for water treatment
use and Churchill asked to begin a
test project with it. Previously there
had been no products available to
try to improve the situation. The
trial isnt quite over yet, but tenta-
tive results in.
I believe weve done three treat-
ments so far this year and I guess
the jury is still out on it a little bit.
We havent had the algae bloom that
weve typically had in past years so
its improved that, said Churchill.
We havent completed the full year
yet, and I think every year it will
get better because well have a little
(bit) of a jump on it each year. Well
slowly eliminate all of the algae.
Were not getting as many com-
plaints which I guess could be
viewed as improvement, however,
there is still a little bit of odour and
I believe taste as well.
Churchill said the County is also
considering a few different options
to try in conjunction with the SHAC
Ponder. One option is shock chlori-
nating the line that comes from the
reservoir to water treatment plant.
He said the thought right now is
that there might still be a little re-
sidual algae growing in the line.
Thats quite normal to do in po-
table water systems. A lot of people
that have private wells shock chlori-
nate their wells, said Churchill.
It could take a few years to com-
pletely eliminate the problem, but
for now things appear to be im-
proving.

Ultimately whether an-
other water treatment plant
is built, which is another
strategy being discussed, or
water is brought in through
a pipeline; the raw storage
pond, which is causing the
problem, will be replaced
with a new storage pond.
It will be deeper and the
algae wont grow as easily in
it. The reason that the algae
is growing in the one that
we have right now is be-
cause it is very shallow and
the sunlight can get to the
bottom and cause things to
start growing, and it warms
it up too. Its a combination
of the light and the temper-
ature of the water that al-
lows the algae to grow, said
Churchill.
In his opinion, the potable
water is better than it has
been in the past. However,
Churchill said he couldnt
speak for the residents of
Gleichen. The SHAC Ponder
has given positive results
and will be used again next
year because of that.

What is an
Insurance Broker?
Youve probably seen the TV
ads about why you should use an
insurance broker. What does a
broker do?
This is the person in-between
you and the insurance company. A
broker will quote your insurance,
write the policy, do changes as
required, assist in a claim, to name
but a few of day-to-day tasks. What
you need, the broker either does or
facilitates.
A broker has different companies
that they can use. In our offce the
focus is always to give the best
coverage at the best price.
A broker has a one-on-one
relationship with the customers. We
look after people face-to-face, do
transactions over the phone, through
our website, use fax, email, and
regular mail to provide our services.
A broker is required to be knowledgeable about
insurance and must do continuing education. This is a
good thing as the one thing that is constant is change!
A broker is there to make recommendations, help you
understand the complexities of insurance and to listen
when you have a question.
At Action Insurance Group we are locally owned and
operated. We are brokers. We are here for you. Were

For any restaurant making
a good burger isnt too hard
to do, but to make the best
burger and be recognized
for it? Now thats something
to bite into. The Strathmore
Times, in partnership with
the Strathmore and District
Chamber of Commerce and
the Town of Strathmore,
once again held a best burg-
er contest.
There were 10 restaurants
all vying for the top spot.
You, our readers, cast votes,
with the top three restau-
rants then put to the test.
Things were done a little
differently this year. Last
year the judges went to each
of the three restaurants three
days in a row to eat the burg-
er being judged.
This year we actually or-
dered from the restaurant,
sent somebody from the
town offce to pick them up,
brought them to the Cham-
ber offce in packages and
we took one of each of the
packages, cut the burgers
into threes, said Lin Walker,
secretary for the Chamber.
Walker, Strathmore Times
publisher Mario Prusina, and
Councillor Dave Hamilton
who flled in for Councillor
Earl Best each took a piece
of burger and determined
which they thought was best.
Clives Alberta Beef

Cheeseburger was named
this years winner of the best
burger contest.
I think it was just over-
all, when you ate the burger
it was a good burger, said
Walker.
It was a tough job last
year, and it was a tough job
this year because the top
three, theyre awesome burg-
ers, there was no bad burger
out of the three it was just
that this was the best burg-
er.
I came by and had one
of those burgers here and it
was awesome, said Best.
Judy Muenchrath with
Clives said their vegetar-
ian cook Aline was the one
who said that was the burger
to enter in the contest. The
cheeseburger, which is also
Muenchraths personal fa-
vourite, stands out in the
way its presented and pre-
pared, she said.

The goal for the seventh annual
Harleys and Hotrods Poker Run was
to break the $100,000 donation mark,
something it did with fair. Money raised
from the poker run is donated to the
Childrens Wish Foundation.
The morning of Sept. 8 started with a
toonie breakfast, and a show and shine.
The roadway in front of Underground
Performance was packed with people,
bikes and classic cars.
We had well over 200 participants
and it was an awesome day. Beautiful
weather for it all and I think everyone
was very pleased, said Vince Orme,
president of the Harleys and Hotrods
poker run board, and owner of Under-
ground Performance.
Its been seven years and I think
were probably going to be getting close
to the $110,000 mark with this years
donation once we get things all tallied.
During the show and shine awards
were given including the second annual
Davis Cup. Davis Weisner, 14, fought a
long battle with cancer before succumb-
ing last year. The Davis Cup was created
as a way to honour him and keep his
memory alive. Organizations like the
Childrens Wish Foundation and the
Kids Cancer Care often become a light
down a dark path for a child fghting
cancer.
Davis was a real fan of hot rodsso
we decided to give out the award for a
car this year instead, said Orme.
The car show was held in the morning
for the frst time. A lot of the cars may
not come out to the party later in the
day and Orme said they wanted to make
sure to include them too. The recipient
of the Davis Cup was Dan with his 1921
T- bucket.
Saturday was geared more towards
the adults with the show and shine, the
poker run and the party afterwards. On
Sunday, kids were welcome at AAB Steel
for the bike rodeo and other events.
We had the rodeo on Sunday as well,
so the kids were allowed to come out
and participate in the games on Sunday.
We had a kids keg toss and a barrel roll
for them.
A few people have asked what a bike
rodeo is. A bike rodeo is where there
are a bunch of games that have to be
done on the bike. There is a keg roll,
which is where a keg is laid down on its
side and pushed across the line using
the bikes front tire.
Theres the slow ride, and the object
is to be the last person across the fn-
ish line without putting your feet on
the ground. Theres also the wienie bite,
where the passenger on the bike has to
go under the stand where a hotdog is
hung from and try to bite off as much as
they can without the driver putting his
feet down.
This year was the frst year the poker
run had been held in September, and
the frst time the show and shine had
been held in the morning. The plan is
to host the car show at the same time
next year.

Councillor Earl Best asked council for a leave of
absence. The Municipal Government Act allows
for Council to pass a resolution to give a Coun-
cillor a leave of absence as indicated in Section
174 (2). The section states that a councillor is not
disqualifed by being absent from regular council
meeting under subsection (1)(d) if the absence is
authorized by a resolution of council passed, at
any time before the end of the last regular meet-
ing of the council in the 8-week period, or if there
is no other regular meeting of the council during
the 8-week period, at any time before the end
of the next regular meeting of the council. Best
asked for a four-month leave beginning on Sept. 8
and lasting until Jan. 8, 2013 for personal reasons.
Council approved the request. Best will not be re-
ceiving remunerations nor will he have his town
cell phone during the time he is on leave.
Mayor heading to russia
Mayor Steve Grajczyk will be heading to Ufa,
Russia in February of 2013. He has been invited as
a representative of Strathmore to attend the Inter-
national Childrens Winter Games (ICG). In early
2011 the Strathmore girls bantam A hockey team
participated in the ICG in Kelowna. Grajczyk had
attended and said at the Sept. 5 council meeting
that he had been invited to attend the games in
Russia. He will be paying for his own fight there,
and once he arrives everything is paid for by the
ICG. Grajczyk said there are tours being planned
for him and the other delegates, and he will of
course be attending the sporting events. The trip
will be both a little bit of a holiday mixed in with
heavy promotion of Strathmore and all we have
to offer.

gas well setbacks
Brown and Associates submitted a request ask-
ing to reduce the setback from a sweet gas well
on behalf of the Edgefeld landowners. The set-
back had been 100 metres, which would result
in a loss of 50 lots. The request was to see the
setback changed to 40 metres. The towns sup-
port was needed before the request could be
sent off to the Energy Resources Conservation
Board (ERCB) for fnal approval. A letter of sup-
port was given and it is now in the hands of the

Fule for Thought
My parents (as you 24 readers may remember)
were immigrants to Canada from Europe. Their
one main drawback as parents, was that they were
terrible holidayers.
By this I mean, that when they did take holidays,
we rarely travelled. Rather than go anywhere, most
of their holidays were to DO something. As kids,
my brother and I never got excited when our par-
ents holidays arrived, because we knew nothing
was going to happen! Their holidays were for
them to get extra work done at the house. The
break might be to paint the house, work on the
yard/garage, or to paint the fence! They never re-
ally knew how to relax, only work.
I heard stories from my friends of far-off magi-
cal places like Disneyland Knottsberry Farm
even B.C.! I wondered if they actually existed, or
whether they were made up stories. No, the Fules
were not the holiday type.
I mean, we could have been, but we rarely tried.
When we fnally went on our frst holiday, I was
about 11. We went to Spokane via B.C., in the old
1966 Pontiac Parisienne. My dads idea of travel-
ling was to drive like heck as far as possible each
day, see the place, and then make plans to go on
the next day. Each rare trip was a whirlwind of
speeding along, not really knowing where, or why
we were going there, and basically not seeing the
sights, or history of the place! We did go to Spo-
kane, but I never knew why, and I dont remember
anything about it!
We are all the products of our upbringing, and I
have become a terrible traveler. No matter where
my family goes, I am never comfortable there
for long. Maybe its my Hungarian Gypsy back-
ground, the fact that all my relatives ran like crazy
from invading armies over the decades, or that Joe
Fule could not relax on holidays. As soon as we
arrive somewhere, it never feels right and Im
already planning to go. It drives Debbie nuts, be-
cause her family always holidayed, and loved to
relax.
I phoned my brother, whos in his Mid 50s now,
as to whether hes still like me. He was surprised
at the question, and that we were the same he
ALSO couldnt relax on holidays, and was always
impatient, and never settled.
He said it took him YEARS to be able to fght
off that feeling of ALWAYS wanting to get to the
next place, and he never returned from a holiday
relaxed!
When I was 15, we travelled to Europe to visit
relatives. Back then, you could smoke on a plane.
My dad never admitted he was scared to fy, oh no,
but he proceeded to get bombed and smoke for
most of the fight. I was green, and grew weary of
telling him that those arent polar bears on the
clouds and no, that isnt ice that the imaginary
bears were on!
We landed at Amsterdam, and it began drive
like crazy to Germany up at 4 a.m. and on to
the former Yugoslavia to visit strangers we were
told were relatives! We were dragged from feld to
house, to feld for drunken parties celebrating the
return of Josef and Mary Fule!
At 15, I had been used to a fairly unaffectionate
father he loved us, but you never got a hug, and
he also wasnt able to say I love you to either
of us teenagers. That is why on this trip, I was so
shocked. I got kissed by so many men and women
I never knew I was REALLY creeped out! Rela-
tives would ramble on in languages I didnt under-
stand kiss us drag us to a party and on it
would go! I had NO idea who was who!
Worst of all, there was no plumbing.there was
an outhouse! I did not like outhouses I was
Canadian we did not have outhouses. You had
to walk past the pig pen to get there, and one day
one of my relatives left the stall door unlatched.
Thanks Uncle Steve (IF that was your REAL name!)
I was chased by the biggest pig I had ever seen,
and thankfully I was in shape, because after my
sprint, I had to jump a fence! I begged my parents
to fnish our last two days in a motel. After seven
days of washing with cold water, and sneaking to
the outhouse, a bath and modern plumbing were
a MUST.
Finally, the end was near! We drove madly to
Amsterdam for our fight home. Unfortunately for
my brother and me, our fight home was three days
later! We stayed at the Schipol Airport Hilton, and
never ONCE went into Amsterdam, because MY
parents were afraid to miss the fight!! We could
not convince them that the schedule was fxed
the plane would NOT leave a day or two earlier! It
was Hell three days with your brother and par-
ents, AND nothing to do! After another fight home
watching the polar bears roaming the clouds, we
landed. I had survived this Fule holiday!! It was to
be our LAST one together as a family; no, we were
not meant to holiday. On their holidays, my par-
ents could paint anything they wanted, that was
fne with me! Id sacrifce a trip just for THEM!

Crowfoot MP
Kevin Sorenson, Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, is pleased with the Conservative gov-
ernments newest approach to help young Ca-
nadians fnd jobs in high demand sectors of the
economy.
This initiative will help address labour short-
ages by equipping youth with skills and experi-
ence, and creating opportunities for them to start
careers in high-demand felds. We have a need for
exactly this kind of program for the youth in our
riding, Sorenson says.
I encourage all local organizations, including:
businesses, not-for-proft organizations, educa-
tional institutions, and provincial, territorial and
municipal governments, and others, to apply for
funding under this $50 million two-year invest-
ment. Human Resources and Skills Development
Minister Diane Finley has used the most recent
labour market data with supporting information
from discussions with employers during round
tables on skills shortages to design this new com-
ponent of the federal Youth employment Strategy
- specifcally to increase job prospects for young
Canadians, he continued.
Examples of high-demand occupations include:
the skilled trades (e.g. welder, heavy duty equip-
ment technician); tourism (hospitality administra-
tion and management); and health sciences (e.g.
laboratory technician, research assistant). Appli-
cations and guidelines for both the Career Focus
and Skills Link Calls for Proposals are available
Government of Canada helping youth fnd jobs
online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca. Applications must be re-
ceived by mail or e-mail before Oct. 19.
Our Conservative government is serious about jobs and
economic growth. We are looking at every angle and ad-
dressing existing and future skills shortages is critical to en-
suring Canadas continued economic growth and long-term
prosperity. This is Budget 2012 in action: better equipping
our young people and connecting them with jobs that are in
high demand and helping them develop the skills and gain
the experience they need. As a bonus, these projects will
help employers fll labour shortages while providing youth
with the all-important, on-the-job experience they need to
transition into a career. I hope we can take advantage of
this opportunity locally. Again, I encourage everyone need-
ing workers to visit the website and see if they can apply,
Sorenson concludes.

Letters to the editor
To the Editor
Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson and the Con-
servative Party are putting our childrens health at risk
through their irresponsible attitude to trans fats in our
foods.
Trans fats increase the risk of heart disease and are
estimated to be responsible for thousands of cardiac
deaths annually in Canada. Unlike salt or sugars used
in appropriate amounts, there are absolutely no health
benefts to processed trans fats, but they cause consider-
able harm.
The Conservative government used to recognize
these risks: back in 2007 it called for the food industry
to voluntarily limit the trans fat content of vegetable oils
and soft spreadable margarines to 2 per cent of the total
fat content and to 5 per cent for all other foods. They
promised to regulate the industry if these limits were
not met in two years.
That two-year limit expired in 2009. Not only have the
Conservatives reneged on their plan to impose regula-
tions to protect Canadians and their children from trans
fats, they are also cancelling the trans fat monitoring
program!
This is completely wrong-headed. As Sir Michael Mar-
mot, former president of the British Medical Associa-
tion, puts it, you dont tell people to drink clean water
- you provide clean water you dont tell people to
avoid trans fats you get it out of the food supply.
Trans fats must be removed from the food system. Ca-
nadians should be able to trust that the foods they and
their children eat will be healthy and not cause harm.
This will not only improve health, it will also relieve
the strain on our Medicare system, saving taxpayers as
much as $9 billion on health care over the next two
decades.
The Liberal Party is committed to ensuring tough new
regulations to restrict trans fats in our foods - a position
Mr. Sorenson and the Conservatives once held. It is time
to call them on that broken promise.
Yours sincerely,
Hon. Dr. Hedy Fry, MP

Many might believe that Canada is an essentially ur-
ban country, with its population concentrated in the big
cities. But at least one-ffth of Canadians live and work
in rural and small town communities, and many more
of us reside in suburbs and satellite towns. Where we
live is part of who we are, but it also affects how we are
treated and the services we can access. Those of us who
live and work in rural areas do not always get the same
respect as urban residents or workers, especially from
Canada Post.
On an average day everywhere in this country, more
than 7,000 rural and suburban mail carriers (RSMCs) are
driving the equivalent of ten trips around the globe. 68
per cent of them are women. Theyre delivering mail to
more than 4 million addresses across Canada, including
750,000 rural mailboxes. And theyre maintaining and
fuelling their own vehicles to do it. Theyre part of a vast
network bringing goods and services to rural and sub-
urban areas. And theyre doing it all for less than their
urban counterparts.
For many years, rural mail carriers were classifed
as independent contractors. In the past, people had to
bid against their neighbors for rural routes ending up
with often less than minimum wage and no benefts. In
2003, following decades of organizing by the rural mail
carriers, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW)
made an agreement with Canada Post to contract them
in. The RSMCs became employees with rights and bene-
fts and protections. Getting unionized has helped rural
mail carriers, which, in turn, has contributed to the pros-
perity of their local communities. They have seen some
decent wage increases and better job security as well as
getting vehicle compensation and holidays.
But in many ways, rural mail carriers still fnd them-
selves on the wrong side of the rural-urban divide. Their
work is not recognized equally at Canada Post and they
have a long way to go to achieve parity with urban mail
carriers, even though they do the same work. That is
why the CUPW is currently negotiating a new contract
for rural mail carriers on the principles of equality, re-
spect and progress. Rural mail carriers shouldnt have
to settle for less just because of where they live and
work. Basic issues such as a fair hourly wage, company
uniforms, an adequate route measurement system, and
health and safety protections, among others, are on the
negotiations table now.
All workers should be able to expect fair and equal
treatment. All workers deserve safe and healthy work-
places. Rural residents and businesses also deserve
more from their public postal service. So, the next time
you meet or speak with your rural mail carrier, let them
know you support them. They are the heart of your
community take their issues to heart.

Over the past few weeks the weather
has been slowly starting to cool off, a
sure sign that fall is on its way. Its also
an indicator that its just about time for
the Strathmore Childrens Choir to be-
gin another season. The offcial start
of the season will be Oct. 4, and there
will be a new choir offered for older
choral students.
Weve tried to instigate this choir
for the last two years but havent gen-
erated enough interest, but this year
we have a bunch of kids who were in
the Encore choir last year who have
aged up, so the choir starts at Grade
6. Now we have a choir for those kids
Grade 6 and up, said Director Loralee
Laycock.
The Bravo choir is for Kindergarten
and Grade 1 singers, the Encore Choir
is for Grades 2 to 5 and the Finale
choir will be for kids Grade 6 up to the
age of 18. Laycock said she would love
to have some older singers who may
be able to help teach the younger kids.
A preview of the Finale choir was at
the spring concert so parents and com-
munity members could get an idea of
the kind of songs the Finale choir will
sing, and what kind of music they will
learn.
It was great, I think we had 12 sing-
ers in that choir and they only had a
month to rehearse. They learned two
songs and sang them at the spring
concert. It was a great way for people
at the concert to see whats coming
next for the young people as well,
said Laycock.
We do a lot of music written for
choirs so they can learn the basic prin-
ciples of singing and what singing in a
choir means. That means they will be
singing songs in parts and the Finale
choir will be singing more diffcult
songs like that.
The Strathmore Childrens Choir is
meant to give kids a chance to learn
more about choir outside of their
classroom, and maybe learn different
things. Laycock sees it as a way to add
to whats being taught, not as some-
thing to take away from school choir
teachings.
October will also mark the start of
the choirs ffth season. It began from
a need in the community and contin-
ues to grow each year.
We started the choir originally be-
cause I had two girls at the time who
were four and six and I wanted them
to get to sing in a choir. The school
they went to at the time didnt offer
a choir for younger singers, said Lay-
cock.
I wanted them to have an oppor-
tunity to sing with other children in
the community, and since there wasnt
anything available like that for the
community we started it. Its a non-
auditioned choir. Our whole motto is
making music fun, and my goal really
is to promote music and choral sing-
ing in a positive way.
Choir members are expected to
commit to one rehearsal a week, the
time length of which varies depend-
ing on the age group. The Bravo stu-
dents practice for 30 minutes, Encore
practices for an hour and the Finale
choir will practice for an hour and a
half.
They are required to be at the per-
formances and concerts that are held,
which are typically a Christmas con-
cert, a spring concert, and compete in
the local festival, which has been at
Drumheller the last three years.
Laycock said there are often appear-
ances at community events offered as
well such as singing the national an-
them at a few local hockey games, and
this past summer choir members sang
at the Canada Day celebrations. More
information, and registration forms,
can be found at www.strathmorechil-
drenschoir.com.

Global Training Centre has always
given back to the community and to
organizations that need help. In June,
Global formed the Global Legacy Foun-
dation. It is a grass roots staff effort to
help those who cant help themselves,
and to give back to the community.
The focus of the foundation is to
identify needs and address community
safety issues, to provide safety edu-
cation to youth and to help families
in the community who have been af-
fected and impacted by a life-changing
event due to a workplace injury.
The purpose of forming an off-
cial foundation is that it allows us to
take it to the next level by providing a
united front and charitable image that
the general public can recognize and
support, as well as the Global Legacy
Foundation can promote, Bas Owel,
B.A, Vice President, Operations for
Global Training Centre.
We also hope that this will create
opportunities for people and business-
es in our community to volunteer, offer
skills and services and support for the
foundation. The intention of the foun-
dation is that any proceeds raised will
stay within the Strathmore and sur-
rounding areas.
By creating the Foundation opportu-
nities are also created to help provide
resources to people who may be strug-
gling emotionally, fnancially or may
simply need a helping hand up.
Many times workers compensation
does not cover the complete cost of an
injury, and more importantly nobody
is targeting our youth in a way that
helps them understand their own re-
sponsibility to stop unsafe work, said
Owel.
The Global Legacy Foundation
along with the Global family of staff
are going to work hard to raise funds,
and to bring other business or chari-
table partners on this journey with us.
There will be more on this coming in
the near future.
The Global Legacy Foundation wants
to see Strathmore and the surrounding
area join them on their journey. Owel
said people have asked how they can
help. He suggests helping by advocat-
ing the Global Legacy Foundations
mission, help the Foundation fnd the
right partners and program applicant
considerations, and fnally people can
help by supporting the Foundation in
their activities, by offering their time
and commitment.
This is a wonderful opportunity to
give back, in a unique way; to the com-
munity we live in, work in and have
chosen to raise our families in, said
Owel.

to give back to the community

School is in, teachers have lessons

schools.
Standard School is no different. They
celebrated the new school year with a
family picnic on Monday evening for
teachers, parents, students and all those
who put in the many volunteer hours
in helping construct the new school
playground. Due to the rapid change in
weather with the cold and winds gust-
ing up to 90 km per hour, the picnic
was held indoors in the schools gym-
nasium.
Karen Smith, Principal to Standard,
Hussar and Rockyford Schools said, I
am excited about the new school year
and the great kids that we have, with
roughly 200 students enrolled this com-
ing year.
Smith had the faculty introduce them-
selves and speak about what courses
they taught and any extracurricular ac-
tivities they were involved in.

June-August 2012 Report
The Board of the Handi Bus Association would like to thank the following
donations: [the Benevolent & Protective of Elks Strathmore Lodge #491
$10,000 towards casino funds,] Calgary Co-op (Strathmore) $500.00 to be
used for fuel money and a couple of anonymous donations: $100.00 and
$500.00 towards handibus operations. If you are considering a donation,
please make cheques payable to the Strathmore Handibus and drop
them off at the Town of Strathmore Offce or mail them in care of the
Town of Strathmore at 680 Westchester Drive, Strathmore, AB T1P 1J1.
All donations are very valuable and appreciated.
If you have any concerns or complaints regarding the service, please do
not hesitate to contact Hedy Stor-Rank, town of Strathmore Dispatch
Coordinator. She can be reached at 403-934-3204 ext. 261
We do appreciate your patience and cooperation towards dealing with
issues you may have. We strive to do our very best at consulting you for
the matter.
The Handibus Association is advocating for seniors in order to get some
support from the government and we were happy to meet with MLA Mr.
Jason Hale at our meeting to discuss our needs for operational funding.
We hope that we can get grants from the government in our favour to
support the Handi Bus operations on a yearly basis.
The Board would like to recognize a fellow board member, Linda
Fitzpatrick for her contribution and dedication towards the Handibus
Association over the past 15 years. We want you to know that we
appreciate and honour your commitment. We wish you all the best.
We hope that everyone had a good summer although we may still have
some more sunny days left before the cold north wind comes. Thank you
all for your community support!
are helping her decode the
small town idiosyncratic way
of doing things.
Mr. Stephen Wiewel and
Mr. Adam Sommerfeldt have
incorporated a new extracur-
ricular program this year in
the form of an Outdoor Ed-
ucation Club. Students who
join will be participating in
three back-pack and over-
night hiking trips including
some cross country skiing
in the winter season. Mr. Ed
Yu is enthusiastic about in-
corporating a Fine Arts Per-
formance program this year
with the Junior and Senior
High, to encourage students
in showcasing their natural
abilities in music, drama and
various forms of art.
This year the Grade 5 & 6
class from Rockyford will be
joining the students at Stan-
dard School in both wood-
working (with Mr. Cam Hollo-
way) and a Music and Drama
class led by Shelby Gregory
and Crystal Cavanagh. This
will give the students an op-
portunity to be with more of
their peers and prepare the
way for Junior High.
The High School is excited
once again to offer both a
Cosmetology program run
by Sharon Sundgaard and
a Photography class led by
Mrs. Tiffany Phillips.
After the introductions ev-
eryone went outside to dedi-
cate and offcially open the
new playground that was
constructed at the end of the
school year in June. While
they are still waiting on one
fnal piece of equipment they
went ahead and had a rib-
bon cutting ceremony involv-
ing one child from each of
the Elementary grades par-
ticipating. The school com-
munity was pleased to have
Encana representative Luigi
Vescarelli present to be part
of the celebration as Encana
donated a large fnancial
contribution to the project.
The following children par-
ticipated in the ribbon cut-
ting: Kindergarten Daniel
Jensen, Grade 1 Sarah Krap,
Grade 2 Rosina Christensen,
Grade 3 Angelina Pan, Grade
4 Keavey Boyd, Grade 5 Jo-
ely Dahm and Grade 6 Maren
Everett.
The evening concluded
with a Parent and School
Council meeting to set the
agendas for the year into
place. Have a fantastic year
Standard School.

Shannon LeCLair
Times Reporter
Footballs fans got their fll this past week-
end, Sept. 8, when the peewee, bantam and
senior Spartans all took to the feld for their
frst home games of the season.
The peewee Spartans were up frst bat-
tling against Didsbury. For the frst half of
the game the team held strong, keeping the
score tied 6-6. It was in the second half when
they found their strength and pulled off
enough successful plays to fnish the game
in the lead 20-6.
I was expecting less and got more so it
was a good surprise, said Chuck Holloway,
the new head coach of the peewee team.
I knew they were going to pull through, I
just had to set up a couple of runs to (bring
us through) thats all.
For the last two years Holloway had a son
coached by Doug Klauck. Both Klauck and
Kobe Holloway have moved on to bantam
and with another son in peewee Holloway
stepped up to the plate as coach. The coach,
who is originally from Alabama and used to
coaching college ball plans to stay on as a
coach for the Spartans for good.
Next up were the bantam Spartans against
Stettler. Klauck admits to having never won
an opening game, a curse that unfortunately
wasnt broken this past weekend. Despite not
winning opening games Klauck has helped
bring the peewee Spartans to victory two out
of the frst three years since the teams incep-
tion. The hope is he will do the same for the
bantam.
I would love to, thats always the goal ev-
ery year. Right now our goal is to just make
playoffs and see if we can compete into No-
vember in the playoffs, said Klauck.
Weve got a good base of players weve
just got to clean up our game. It was lot of
frst year jittery nerves for this game.
Klauck said about 10 players have fol-
lowed him up the ranks and into the bantam
league. The frst game may not have had the
result that Klauck was hoping for, but it will
help the team learn what needs to be im-
proved on for the next one.
Theres always something you can take
away from a win or loss that we can use to
improve on for the next game. Well look at
what transpired here today and see where
we can make adjustments, said Klauck.
The senior Spartans also had a tough start
to the season, though the comeback in the
fnal quarter showed they have the skill, they
just need to keep working on it.
Its all been a learning process, weve got
a lot more learning to do. The nice thing with
our frst game is we tend to fgure out what
we need to work on as a coaching staff which
we can then take to the kids and work on
next week in practice and hopefully its bet-
ter in the next game, said Alex McCorquin-
dale who was coaching with Tim Lein.
The fourth quarter the kids played very
well, fantastic fourth quarter. We just ask
where that was in the frst three quarters.
One good quarter will not win a football
game.
Sept. 8 was the only scheduled triple-head-
er for the season. The next home game will
be a 1 p.m. contest for the peewee Spartans
on Sept. 22 against Sylvan Lake.

Armed with a number of veterans and a handful of frst-
year players eager to make a statement, the Wheatland Kings
are optimistic for the 2012-2013 season.
After a franchise best campaign last season, the local junior
B team is looking to maintain and build on the past.
Were extremely optimistic, said Kings head coach Doug
Murphy. Weve got a good, solid core of guys coming back
and weve picked up some excellent new talent. Things are
looking really promising.
Camp went really well it was a little smaller than it has
been the last couple of years, but that was part of the plan to
some extent. Right now we have 14 guys back, so we didnt
want to bring in a lot of people and give them false expecta-
tions. We still have two guys at junior A camp, so you never
know (if they come back too).
According to Murphy, the Kings did things a little different
this year. They hosted a midget rookie camp in the spring
and they came into main camp with only 38 players. The
Kings began the exhibition portion of the season this past
weekend with three games in three days.
Wheatland lost 5-3 to Three Hills on Sept. 7 and 9-4 to
Okotoks at home on Sept. 8, before hammering High River
8-1 on Sept. 9 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
According to Murphy, the team deployed most of their
rookies during the weekend to see what they are made of
and to see if they can handle the rigors of Junior B hockey.
There were a lot of guys there we wanted to have a look at
to see if they could actually play, said Murphy. We were very
pleased with what we saw (in the) nine periods of hockey
and on the ice for six of the last seven days.
The Kings now prepare to take on the same trio of teams
this weekend, when they fnish the exhibition portion of
their schedule. Wheatland will travel to High River and Aird-
rie to open the weekend, before closing with a home game
on Sept. 16 (7 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Kings open the 2012-2013 regular season on Sept. 22
when they host Ponoka at the Strathmore Family Centre. Join
the team for their home opener tailgate party beginning at
5:30 p.m., prior to the 8 p.m. puck drop.
Kings look forward
to new season

(SHS) this weekend with the
annual early bird tournament.
There was stiff competition,
but the senior Spartans girls
volleyball team fared well, los-
ing in the semi-fnal to Eagle
Butte after winning in their
pool. Eagle Butte High School
from Dunmore won the early
bird defeating Cochrane High
in the fnal. League play off-

The fall baseball season kicked off this
past weekend and the Strathmore Reds
are starting with a winning streak. The
frst games of the season began in Medi-
cine Hat on Sept. 8. The boys, aged 14 to
17, went 3-1.
The boys had a great weekend, played
well and came home with three wins,
said team manager Daren Kennett. It
was a good showing and the boys show
a lot of promise.
The team has a total of 14 players,
coming from six different baseball teams,
representing Airdrie, Carbon, Acme,
Strathmore, Calgary, Drumheller, and the
coaches are Dale Anderson, Zane Ander-
son, and Darwin Armitage.
Kennett said the intent of the fall ball
league is to help develop the players
skills through two practices per week
and a 20 game schedule.
The coaches were pleased with our
performance this past weekend. They
see a lot of promise with the players. If
we play well, we can compete with any
team on our fall ball schedule, said Ken-
nett.
This weekend the team will be com-
peting in a tournament in Calgary, then
back to Medicine Hat the following
weekend, and the last weekend of Sep-
tember, the 29 and 30 they will be in
Strathmore.
The fnal weekend of the season will
be Oct. 13 - 14 in Edmonton.

their winning ways

In May, Westmount Elementary School
announced they would be offering a
new hockey program this fall. The pro-
gram is open to all Westmount students
in Grades 5 and 6. There was space for
24 students, and that is exactly what
they got.
Golden Hills School Division worked
with transportation so all of the kids can
bring their gear on the bus in the morn-
ing and home in the afternoon, they just
arent allowed to transport their hockey
sticks for safety reasons. Some of the
Strathmore High School (SHS) students
who are in the SHS Hockey Academy
will also be staying on the ice after their
own hockey program to help mentor
some of the kids.
Thats a neat partnership for us to
have, to have those older kids. A lot of
them play some pretty elite level hock-
ey, some of them are AAA midgets or
AAs and staying on the ice to help our
little gaffers, I think thats a really neat
connection that we have, said Wayne
Funk, Westmounts principal.
Of the 24 kids who signed up for the
program, there are 19 returning West-
mount students, and fve kids who are
new to the school and have transferred
in to be part of the hockey program. The
classroom time is regular class time with
Grade 5/6 split, and Funk said its a reg-
ular class that gets ice time.
Up until March when the ice time ends
the kids in the hockey program will be
a little bit short on social and science.
Once April comes around all the time
spent doing hockey will then be put
back into social and science, balancing
everything out in the end.
The program is about teaching skills
to the kids, and for some helping them
learn the game.
Lots of skills, lots of skating, lots of
puck movement. Its not going to be a
lot of team strategy kind of things be-
cause theyre not on a team together,
and theres a pretty wide range of abili-
ties. Were just looking to improve every-
bodys skills as best we can, said Funk.
The plan is to keep the class size at 24
students, but Funk hopes to see the pro-
gram grow and eventually have separate
Grade 5 and a Grade 6 classes.
New hockey program

Finding a passion for sports at a
young age and then sticking to it can
be tough. The stress, the continuous
practices, and the time commitment
can get taxing as you get older. Of-
ten only the most dedicated can make
it through and play past their high
school years.
Brennen Fule has
been playing basket-
ball since he learned
to walk, with his dad
Pat coaching him
through most of his
basketball career. His
dad has been a big in-
fuence on his basket-
ball career.
Fule played basket-
ball at both the Uni-
versity of Calgary and
Mount Royal but had
taken the last two
years off. Recently he
decided to get back
into the game after
being awarded a full scholarship to
Cape Breton University.
This is kind of a once in a lifetime
opportunity, to get another chance,
even though I havent even been
playing, said Fule.
The decision wasnt an easy one
to make, and it was thanks to the
support from his father and former
coaches Kenton Zandee, Dion Ga-
landy and Kyle Larson that he was
able to fnally decide. The men were
encouraging him and were there for
him to bounce ideas around.
They kind of went out of their way
and had meetings with me and kind
of pushed me in the right direction,
said Fule.
Matt Skinn is the reason Fule found
out about the opportunity to play with
the Cape Breton Capers. Skinn was
Fules junior Dynos coach in Grade
10, and his assistant coach during his
frst year playing at the University of
Calgary. Skinn moved along to coach
at St. Francis Xavier University, and
continued to keep in touch with Fule.
Once his contract was up, he start-
ed messaging me saying he was ap-
plying to a bunch of places and that
if he got anything, I would be one of
his frst calls. I got a call about three
months ago, said
Fule.
I took two years off
because I fell out of
love with it because
it became a chore.
Since Ive kind of
got the itch back and
Matts the only coach
Id ever play for again.
As soon as he started
talking to me then
all of a sudden I was
the one out training,
I wasnt being told to
train, so thats the frst
time Ive had that in a
long time too.
Fule said he is hoping to just have
fun again and to play like I used to,
just free and loose, while fnally fn-
ishing up his school career in busi-
ness and fnance.
One of the reasons Im going to
play for Matt too is I have a lot of
unfnished business and he knows
that. The frst three years didnt go as
well as I had hoped, playing wise,
said Fule.
During the frst three years of Uni-
versity ball, he said he lost his conf-
dence and wasnt playing like himself.
He was always offensive juggernaut
shooter and he went there he became
scared to shoot and became a defen-
sive player. Skinn told him the main
thing he wants is Fules confdence
on the court with the Cape Breton
Capers.

GRIFFITH,
Joseph Louis
91 years of age
Dad was born on August 20, 1921
at Rockdell, Saskatchewan. He lived in Yorkton,
Saskatchewan when he was young, and moved
to Neepawa with his mother Georgina and brother
Barnie when he was in high school. He played
violin, ball, and hockey; and enjoyed curling and
water skiing in his younger years. He met his wife
Rosa Turner in Neepawa and they were married
on September 14, 1941. They were both active
members of the Anglican Church all of their lives;
both church and God were important to them.
When WWII broke out, he enlisted into the Canadian
Merchant Navy on October 1, 1942 and trained
to be a radio technician. He got his nickname
Sparks because of this job and was stationed out
of Vancouver until February 24, 1946. A Merchant
Marines job was to deliver lumber, oil, military
supplies and food to support British war efforts.
Dad and his crew sailed to many places picking up
these supplies; places like San Francisco, Australia,
Chili, Scotland and Murmansk. The later of which,
being a run to Russia, was the most treacherous
of trips that dad and his Captain volunteered for.
After coming home from the war, he was told he
would receive no benefts and as he was now a
civilian, he had no job waiting for him. However,
dad soon found work in Neepawa for a while and
when the opportunity to manage the Co-op in
Rossburn came about, he took it. Dad was a hard
worker; he wouldnt quit until he mastered the task.
This started his career with Co-op, moving from
Flin Flon, Swan River, and Killarney, Manitoba; to
Whitewood, Saskatchewan; and fnally Strathmore
Alberta. Along with the Co-op movement, dad loved
square dance calling and round dancing. He square
dance called in all four Prairie Provinces, which is
a feat in itself. You square dancers were mom and
dads second family. Thank you for taking such
good care of them. Thanks also to the staff at the
Wheatland Lodge and the Strathmore Hospital for
all the good care you have given dad. It has been
very much appreciated. Thank you dad from all
your family for your love, friendship, guidance, and
hard work. We are proud of you; you have set a high
example for us to aim for. Dad is survived by his
daughters Carole Huston and Lynn (Ron) Froese;
grandchildren Kelly Huston, Darren (Monique)
Huston, Patrick (Andrea) Froese, Allan (Michelle)
Froese; great-grandchildren Chandler Huston,
Jarod Huston, Madison Froese and Colton Froese;
sister-in-law Nellie Boxall; and numerous nieces
and nephews. In lieu of fowers, donations can be
made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Calgary
(201, 222-58 Ave S.W., Calgary, T2H 2S3) or the
Canadian Cancer Society (200, 325 Manning Road

held Monday, September 10, 2012 at Strathmore

Mario Prusina
Times Editor
After a highly-spirited rookie camp, a
grueling main camp and a very competi-
tive Red & White game, the UFA Bisons
had some diffcult choices to make.
Over 140 players were seeking a spot
on the local triple-A midget team, but af-
ter the annual Red & White game, only
32 players are left standing.
Despite the diffculty of telling a play-
er he didnt make the roster, head coach
Jeremy Friesen prefers to make the
tough choices.
Its always the hardest thing (about
camp) and its what we ask for coming
into the season, we dont want anything
to be easy, said Friesen. There are go-
ing to be some tough decision and some
tough conversations (taking the team to
20 players). Thats a good problem to be
in.
Friesen was particularly impressed
with the Red & White game, which took
place on Sept. 9 at the Strathmore Family
Centre. After 60 minutes of hockey ac-
tion, the team trimmed their roster by a
dozen players to the current 32.
I think we were pretty impressed with
the depth, the skill and the pace, said
the coach. It seemed to be more intense
that the past couple of years it started
out really defensive and a little back and
forth in the third period. We saw a lot of
really good things. We had a lot of tough
decisions to make obviously in trimming
the roster (right after the game) and its
only going to get tougher from here.
The Bisons have three returning play-
ers among the 32 players in camp, with
a potential for three more players cur-
rently in the Western Hockey League. Ac-
cording to Friesen, they will fnd out on
Sept. 18 if they are returning and will
have the fnal roster set for Sept. 20.
According to Friesen, a lot of the play-
ers possess characteristics that most
coaches are envious of.
Its the size and the ability to move,
described Friesen. We have some big
bodies that are arguably some of the
faster skaters on the ice right now, which
is a pretty good situation to be in. There
have been some players who have im-
pressed up front and a couple of guys on
the back end who are big, mean and mo-
bile. They can activate the rush and they
have some offensive fair to them as well.
It seems like the bigger guys are a lot
more well-rounded than in years past
theyre not a one-dimensional shutdown
player. They bring the whole package to
the table.
The players have one last chance to
impress the coaching staff, as the team is
hosting their annual exhibition tourna-
ment this coming weekend at the Strath-
more Family Centre.
The Bisons will host Red Deer, the de-
fending national champions, on Sept. 13
(6:30 p.m.), the Calgary Northstars Sept.
14 (5:30 p.m.) and the Calgary Buffaloes
on Sept. 15 (11:45 a.m.). The tournament
playoffs will take place on Saturday
night and the bronze and gold medal
games on Sunday morning (9 a.m. and
11:45 a.m.) respectively.
Everybody coming (to the tourna-
ment) is in the same boat of us, said Fri-
esen. They are carrying a similar roster
size and guys are fghting and competing
for spots. Everybody understands that
this might be the last kick at the can.
