I N D E X

On Sunday 23rd. April (editors note 1893) the entire railway line Faenza-Florence will be inaugurated tomorrow Faenza and the ospitable Romagna will stretch out their brotherly hand to the friendly Florence and the cultured Tuscany, and celebrating happily and united their long-awaited reapproachment, they will show their firm and steady wish that from the drilled Appenines a new inspiration of culture and well-being will reach them along with the powerful steam-engine.
(passage from the manifesto of the Commune of Faenza)

1893 was an unforgettable year for Tuscany and Romagna: finally the railway had tamed the mountain and permited the connection of the two seas and the two ports: the Tyrrhenian Sea with Livorno and the Adriatic Sea with Ravenna.

The 101 kilometre long railway started from S.Maria Novella Station in Florence and after sixteen intermediate stations (among which Vaglia, S. Piero, Borgo S. Lorenzo, Ronta, Marradi, Brisighella), it reached Faenza. The railway was rich of works of art: the splendid bridge on the stream Trillero (between Panicaglia and Ronta) all in pietra serena (a grey stone from Firenzuola) with splays in arches lowered by 36 metres and with other eight small lights; the road bridges on the Buggiano, on the Rio Morto and of the Poggio and the very beautiful rail bridges on the Lamone and on the Faentina main road at Marradi which is 199 metres long, are extraordinary monuments of the Italian railway engineering On the 30th June 1913, the 32 kilometre long stretch Borgo S.

Lorenzo-Pontassieve was opened to create a more practical connection of the Faentina to the Florence-Rome line and to central Italy.

The stations of Vicchio, Dicomano, Contea-Londa and Rufina had

been placed on the way: every now and then the line passed very close to the left and right banks of the river Sieve.

In 1944-45, the Germans in a withdrawal, systematically destroyed the stretch Florence-Borgo S. Lorenzo; bridges, rail bridges and tunnels were blown up by mines charged with TNT and other explosives. The lines Borgo S. Lorenzo-Faenza and Borgo S. LorenzoPontassieve were brought back to move in the years following the war while the reconstruction of the Faentina section Borgo S. LorenzoFlorence was started only in the 80s and on the 14th January 1999 the railway was officially put back into service. This mini guide book wants to make a strip of the Tuscan and Romagna land known on board of a slow train which allows the traveller to spend a relaxing holiday completely immersed in nature and out of the big traffic. The Faentina railway offers the possibility to penetrate two big cities of art like Florence and Ravenna and in the meantime to stop in the Mugello Sieve Valley and in the valley of the Lamone where still pure landscapes of enchantry attraction offer the tourist particular itineraries on foot, by bicycle or by bus.

M a r r a d i :

The track of the Faentina line started from gates 15 and 16 at Santa Maria Novella station occupying the Florence-Rome line as far as the junction of the Pellegrino from where the true and real railway track for Faenza started. While waiting for the reconstuction of the access to S. Maria Novella, the departure station today is Florence Campo di Marte. On leaving Campo di Marte, the line runs along the torrent Mugnone passing very close the 16th century Villa Salviati. On the right at the top is the splendid hill of the millenary, Etruscan Fiesole. Then the line gets out of Florence and gets ready to immerse itself in the suggestive landscape of the Appenine. It passes the short tunnel of Monterinaldi and the Spiccarello one just under the lee of Fiesole, getting out at Pian di Mugnone and reaching Caldine/Fiesole station. After, the line goes through the tunnel of S. Andrea a Sveglia which is completely curved on the left side and then through the 3,584.30 metre long tunnel of Pratolino which is the second in length along the Faentina line after the one of the Appenines or the Allocchi The line gets out again just a little beyond the village of Fontebuona in the narrow valley of the torrent Carza. The railway passes Vaglia and San Piero a Sieve Stations and crosses the river Sieve to enter into the heart of the Mugello. The line cuts the main road that goes to Scarperia-Il Giogo-Imola and passing very close to this road on the right and the river, it reaches the station of Borgo San Lorenzo.

FLORENCE Station
The station in Florence S. Maria Novella Station
In 1848 the Grand Duke Leopoldo di Lorena inaugurated two stations in Florence: the Leopolda near Porta al Prato and the Maria Antonia which was built very near the apse of S. Maria Novella church. It was thought of as a little station but as time went by it acquired more and more importance just for its being in the heart of the historical Florentine centre. In 1932 a competition was advertised for the reconstruction of the old building of the Maria Antonia Station, decaying and inadequate by now. The awarded project was the one presented by a group led by the Tuscan architect Giovanni Michelucci. The station was inaugurated on 30th October 1935 by the King himself, a year and a half before the opening of the direttissima. It is equipped with sensible structures and excellent functionality in evident contrast with the architectonic rules of that time. The main facade was withdrawn in respect to the old building in such a way as to leave a vast square. The big entrance hall covered by double glass panes was floored with serpentine slabs and the walls were covered with yellow marble from Siena. The six big pillars that support the roofing were covered with green marble slabs. The front body with the public services has a covered area of 9,200 sq.m.

The most picturesque stretch in steady ascent (at some points at 26) for the Faentina starts from Borgo San Lorenzo. Leaving the station, the train plunges into an open landscape among fields of wheat, soya beans and sunflowers. The scene becomes more and more suggestive: old vine-yards and olive groves, thousand yearold parish churches, ancient farmhouses, and geometrical shaped vegetable gardens accompany the traveller as far as Ronta station, the last centre of the valley before facing the Appenines. The two faentine, the main road and the railway, now separate; the first will face the Passo della Colla di Casaglia, the railway enters into the heart of the mountain in a succession almost continuous tunnels and rail bridges. During the short moments out of the tunnels, the traveller can catch a glimpse of an isolated and wild territory, among chestnut woods first and beechtree woods after. The traveller can see paths and old mule-tracks, old ruins and numerous railwaymens cottages along the line. A short while after the stop at Fornello, where there are neither houses nor roads, the track enters the great Appenines or Allocchi tunnel which at mid-way (about 1800metres) reaches the height of the Pass which is at 578.38 metres above sea level. Then the descent towards Romagna starts and the traveller will then meet the stations of Crespino sul Lamone and Marradi which is the town of the poet Dino Campana. After passing the big station with a vast service area and about ten railway tracks, the line starts descending towards the Romagna plain. The view is excellent; villas, medieval castles and the landscape which from mountaneous becomes hilly with orchards of peach trees and cherry trees which become clouds of flowers in the springtime. The train then reaches the well-known medieval city Brisighella and after ten kilometers it ends its route at Faenza, rejoining to the Adriatic line Bologna-Ancona. In 1921 the section Faenza-Russi was inaugurated and since then it is possible (in some cases without changing train) to reach the magnificient city of Ravenna, the following station in Classe and all the Adriatic Riviera.

----MARRADI
Marradi owes its birth and its first development to the Roman road that went from Florence to Faenza and that guaranteed the supplying of wheat and salt. Around the year one thousand it belonged to the Lord Guidi, then to the Medici, to the Florentine Republic and to the Lorena. The noble families that inhabited the town (Fabbroni, Torrigiani, Cattani, etc.), contributed to the economical development of the town and they founded the Accademy of the Animosi. The poet Dino Campana (1885-1932) was born in Marradi. Todays the village is famous for the production of chestnuts.

Along the Sieve valley

When the travellers coming from Faenza reach the station at Borgo San Lorenzo they could choose the route to Florence that goes along the Valley of the river Sieve instead of the Faentina line. The line infact at times, passes very near the left or right bank of the river. From the train window the eyes meet a rich and varied landscape: a line of cypress trees that lead to a Villa often hidden among the trees of an age-old park, ancient farm cottages on top of a hill, like massif of Monte Giove on the right, Monte Falterona in the background and the ridge of the Tosco-Romagnolo Appenines on the left. Leaving Borgo San Lorenzo the line reaches Vicchio which is Giottos and Beato Angelicos birth place: here the valley bottom is still vast but it closes a little after, in the vicinity of Dicomano. The line bends towards South reaching the station of Contea/Londa. From here the landscape designed by the Sieve and its tributtaries becomes sweeter with soft hilly tops cultivated by rows of vines often interrupted by the grey foliage of the olive trees. After passing the station in Rufina, famous for its excellent Chianti wine which bears the same name, the line skirts the main Forlivese road and reaches Pontassieve where the Sieve flows together with the Arno. From here to the main station S. Maria Novella in Florence, the train continues its route on the line coming rom Rome.

San Godenzo
San Godenzo belonged to the Lords Guidi, a family of Longobardi origin who came to Italy in the tenth century. There are still rare traces of the numerous fortress and castles which they had constructed on the territory. The village history is tied to the ancient abbey founded before the year one thousand. The exterior of the Benedectine building is similar to the Cathedral of Fiesole and it contains precious works by Baccio da Montelupo and Bernardo Daddi. The abbey in San Godenzo has been saved from the bombardments of the second world war that heavily hit the village situated on the Gothic line.

CONTEA - LONDA Station

The railway station is at Contea, a fraction of the Commune of Dicomano three kilometers away. From Contea we reach Londa of Etruscan origin and it has been inhabited since the 6th century B.C. After, it has also been a Roman village and towards the year one thousand it became the dominion of the Lords Guidi that had the first group of buildings constructed on an islet at the confluece of the river Rincine with the Moscia: the village was called Isola (island), then L Onda (the wave) and finally Londa.

RUFINA Station
The first document that mentions Rufina is a Papal Seal of Gregory VIII in 1076. It was the property of the Lords Guidi of Pomela. Only after the first half of the 19th century the real inhabited centre was found near the bridge on the torrent Rufina. A remarkable wine production has developed on the hills surrounding the inhabited centre thanks to ancient families such as the Albizi and the Frescobaldi.

PONTASSIEVE Station
Pontassieve was born in a pre Etruscan period at the confluence of the river Sieve and the Arno. Some recoveries witness the Etruscan and Roman rule; it was the residence of various Lords from Filicaia. At the end of the year 1300 they had a bridge built on the river Sieve and they granted a license for a market since the village was on the cross roads of the Casentino, Arezzo and Romagna. In 1355 Cosimo I had the bridge rebuilt appending the Medici coat-of-arms on the side. The development of the town started in 1859 with the construction of the railway Milan-Rome-Naples which crossed Pontassieve.
