Our commitment to building the best coaches goes back almost as far as the history of the coach itself. It reached its first milestone over 60 years ago, as a breakthrough, winning idea was introduced with Setras self-supporting body. Still today, our passion for continuous improvement, our experience and high standards shape the whole coach and bus sector.

Our vision goes well beyond developing and building a technologically perfect coach. That of course is our goal and a logical next step in our thought process. One that places people and their needs in the foreground of every development: the passengers, drivers and of course the operator. Coupled with our high standards of innovation and quality, the result of this thought process is a selection of coaches that ensure that every journey is a memorable experience for travellers. One that fascinates the driver while offering him or her the greatest possible protection. And one that gives the operator a great feeling of investing in a secure and profitable future. Just like Setra coaches always have.

The new ComfortClass 500

The future of coach travel
Before the development of the new ComfortClass 500 began, we spent a lot of time talking about the future. First of all with our customers. About the wishes and expectations of tomorrows passengers. About what moves and motivates the driver. And about changing economic, ecological and legal contexts. Ultimately, we succeeded at bringing together seemingly mutually exclusive requirements: cost-effectiveness, environmental consideration and performance, for instance. A coach concept came to life which we believe provides the best answer to tomorrows requirements. Forward-looking in its exclusive, aerodynamic design and setting a new standard with a drag coefficient value of 0.33. Exemplary in safety, comfort and the countless good ideas it incorporates. And no less than amazing in the way it brings together state-of-the-art Euro VI technology, power and favourable fuel consumption. Welcome to your future. Welcome to the new ComfortClass 500.

More space for comfort

The new ComfortClass 500s unmatched spaciousness
While developing the new coachs interior, we were led and inspired by the following question: how would your passengers like to travel tomorrow? The ComfortClass 500, with its exceptionally roomy interior, provides a clear answer. The nine centimetre greater interior height is unexpected and unmatched in this class. The innovative ceiling concept creates a completely new feeling of space: the passenger compartment appears to open up on the sides, while enabling passengers sitting in the central aisle to enjoy an impressive view through the generous panoramic windows.

Outstanding spaciousness characterises travel in the new ComfortClass 500 from the first moment on. The new kneeling function, the wide steps and elegant handrail make entering the coach a pleasure. Your passengers will even enjoy storing their carry-on luggage, since we increased the height of the luggage racks, to accommodate most trolley cases.

The current Setra seat generation in the ComfortClass 500 is equipped with cushioned seats and comfortable, ergonomically designed seat backs to provide the greatest possible seating comfort and convenience of operation. In addition to the extensive basic equipment, with our countless options, you can customise the seats to suit your exact needs. And here is yet another comfort-oriented innovation: to allow aisle-side passengers a generous view to the outside, the inside seats can be positioned six centimetres forward. Youll find much more information on seating with Setra in our special seat brochure.

Invitingly spacious: the ComfortClass 500 welcomes your passengers with a wide entrance and a comfortable hand rail. 8 9

As the journey in your new ComfortClass 500 begins, your guests will enjoy an all-around feeling of wellbeing, thanks to several intelligent details and innovative solutions. For instance, the newly developed service sets or the 48 cm (19) ceiling monitors. The meticulously adjusted lighting concept with several LEDs, the noise optimisation as well as the comfort-optimised chassis all contribute to a soothing, comfortable travel ambiance.

There are very few things that determine the level of comfort your passengers will experience as much as your coachs interior atmosphere does. With this in mind, we have significantly enhanced the air circulation in the whole passenger compartment for example, with optimised ventilation at the rear of the coach. In order to achieve uniform temperature distribution when heating or cooling, our engineers created two separate control zones for the front and rear sections of the coach. So from now on, all passengers will enjoy optimised air conditioned comfort regardless of where they are seated and will arrive at their destination comfortable and relaxed.

Luftzirkulation 104
For a relaxed arrival: the new dualzone air conditioning ensures uniform temperature distribution throughout the coachs interior. Relaxing for the eyes: the generous 48 cm (19) ceiling monitors are also available in an electrically collapsible version.

A dream to drive
Ergonomic design at its most refined
A coach that addresses tomorrows questions today also has to offer better answers in terms of comfort. The new ComfortClass 500 does this quite exceptionally. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find another coach as consistently focused on the wellbeing of the driver as the new ComfortClass. At the very first glance, the newly designed cockpit radiates a feeling of unprecedented quality. It brings together an entirely new instrumentation, an enhanced overview and a newly developed user logic throughout with superb ergonomics.

The ComfortClas 500s new cockpit was designed to fulfil many driver requests. For example, the new drivers seat, the steering column and the steering wheel offer multiple adjustment options to even more closely match the drivers preferred seating position.
Invisible heating at the ComfortClass 500s drivers window contributes to very pleasant temperature control, and the new suspended pedals significantly improve ergonomics. This and a series of other small measures support fatigue-free driving underscoring the high standard of driver comfort we have set for the coach of the future. We also considered the requests of many drivers when we designed the numerous storage spaces and compartments in the cockpit using a full complement of all the items that drivers usually carry with them. Based on this, we created the exceptionally practical storage concept for the ComfortClass 500. The Coach Multimedia System (CMS), with its large, brilliant colour display, is also completely new, modern and ergonomically designed. It was especially conceived for coaches and harmoniously integrated to the cockpits overall design. Features such as easy destination selection, via a rotary push-action knob in the navigation system, considerably enhance operation convenience. The automated PowerShift3 transmissions comfortoptimised switching programmes can be called up easily via the steering column switch and this also contributes to outstanding driving convenience.

A perfect overview: the newly conceived, state-of-the-art instrument cluster includes a high-resolution colour display and a pane of resistant glass. Always flexible: with the ComfortClass 500, you have the choice between a single and a double attendant seat. Enhanced locking convenience: the electronic vehicle swich for ignition and central locking is also available with an integrated remote control.

Your objectives need security as well

With the ComfortClass 500, the future is here today
The ComfortClass has been at the forefront of safety developments since it was first introduced. And with the new generation, this applies even more so. Many safety features which will be legally required from a coach in the future, are already a given with the ComfortClass 500, which offers a safety concept that uniquely brings together both active and passive safety systems. With its significantly greater rigidity, for instance, the ComfortClass 500 already fulfils tomorrows legislation. This also applies to the further developed Front Collision Guard (FCG) and the new generation of the Active Brake Assist feature (ABA 2) if so desired. Moreover, the new ComfortClass 500 offers a full series of safety systems, as standard equipment or options, to protect passengers and drivers while maintaining the value of your coach. The Attention Assist feature is all new in the ComfortClass 500; it recognises the drivers fatigue and warns him actively. The innovative AquaBlade windshield wiper system delivers a big safety plus as well. Further safety features include, for instance, BiXenon headlamps, an electronic ignition switch with integrated remote control, LED daytime lights and, last but not least, the optimised Electronic Braking System (EBS 3).

The electronic tire pressure control feature with the display in the cluster instrument makes checking tire pressure easier than ever. It helps you avoid tire damage serving both safety and cost-effectiveness. 18

An additional reverse light positioned near the trailing axle increases both comfort and safety when manoeuvring backwards.

The optional BiXenon headlamps light up the edges of the road more clearly and more widely, and the high beam has a significantly greater reach. This increases perceptual safety and makes driving much safer especially at night.

Everything under one roof

Consumption, performance, ecology: finally a coach to satisfy everyone
High cost-effectiveness, powerful performance and environmental compatibility as per Euro VI standards and some still say, you cant have it all? We say, sure you can. At least with the ComfortClass 500. On the one hand, thanks to the completely new BlueEfficiency Power engines with BlueTec 6 exhaust gas after-treatment, which not only undercut stringent Euro VI limits, but compared to Euro V lower fuel consumption by up to five percent, while achieving best marks in terms of performance and weight. And, on the other hand, thanks to a series of clever ideas our engineers came up with. For example, they succeeded at creating a highly rigid yet lightweight support structure for the ComfortClass 500. They developed intelligent energy and consumption management, which saves valuable fuel. At the same time, our designers provided the new ComfortClass with a consistently aerodynamic outer shell which, together with automatic level lowering at high speeds, even further reduces consumption. This and many other small mosaic pieces contribute to the ComfortClass 500s consumption being significantly reduced compared to Euro V. And, thanks to a whole series of clever weight optimisation measures, the load and passenger capacity of the ComfortClass remains unchanged. All of this provides you as operator with crystal clear financial benefits along with even further optimised maintenance costs and, one day, with a high resale value for your ComfortClass 500.

The ComfortClass 500 that suits you best. The more precisely the ComfortClass 500 is customised to your specific requirements and areas of application, the sooner it will deliver real value. And this is also a matter of size.
The new ComfortClass 500 is being launched in four frequently selected versions: the S 515 HD, the S 516 HD/2, the S 516 HD and the S 517 HD. Each one shines with an outstanding price-performance ratio, fair investment costs per seat, exceptional availability and, especially, very high future security. Welcome aboard!

The S 515 HD belongs to the popular 12-meter class and, as a high-decker, it offers a lot of room for a lot of luggage. Whether for excursions or long-distance tours this coach embodies what application versatility was meant to be.

The S 516 HD with its three axles offers higher load capacity and therefore considerably more flexibility, required for instance for a special interior construction. But also, if you simply wish to avoid axle restrictions in cross-border transport.

The S 516 HD/2, in spite of Euro VI conformity and increased rigidity, offers a light advantage in load versus Euro V. With its two axles, it is the most cost-effective coach among the 13-meter models.

The S 517 HD offers generous space and comfort to up to 59 passengers along with a lot of room for luggage. Its turning circle of less than 23 meters is unmatched. And thanks to its high-level cost-effectiveness, it is even interesting for excursions.

Technology in detail. Here you can find out more about all the important equipment features and options of the new ComfortClass 500.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ART) The Adaptive Cruise Control feature relieves the driver by maintaining a constant distance defined by the driver from the vehicle ahead, based on continuous measurements. This not only increases safety on country roads and highways, but also convenience. A radar system, which guarantees outstanding functionality even under poor weather conditions and in the dark, monitors a distance of up to 200 meters in front of the vehicle and to the full width of the road. Should a variably defined security distance to the vehicle driving ahead be undercut, ART slows down the coach so that the safety zone is maintained. Many rear-impact collisions can therefore be avoided. Unlike the emergency assistant Active Brake Assist (ABA), ART initiates a smooth braking with maximum 20 percent of its possible power.

Active Brake Assist (ABA 2) In cases where the distance from the front vehicle falls below that determined by the ART feature, the emergency assistant Active Brake Assist (ABA) kicks in. The radarcontrolled system continuously scans the road at a distance of between 0.25 and 200 meters. If the distance lowers dangerously and if an accident at this speed is deemed unavoidable, the system warns the driver in a 1st step using optical and acoustic signals. If he doesnt react, the ABA feature mechanically prepares the braking system for an immediate braking in a 2nd step. If the driver still doesnt react, the ABA independently initiates full braking in a 3rd step. The latest generation, Active Brake Assist 2, now not only recognises vehicles driving ahead, but also non-moving obstacles, and initiates similarly to the ABA warning cascade a partial braking automatically, if the driver doesnt react. This can be decisive, for instance, when you run into unexpected traffic congestion on a highway.

Lane Assist (SPA) Driver fatigue ranks among the most frequent causes of accidents. The Lane Assist feature, at the heart of which is a camera positioned behind the front windscreen, continuously measures the lateral distance to side road markings. If the driver moves out of the lane, the system warns him through a vibration in the seat on the side the vehicle is inadvertently drifting towards. To avoid false alarms, the Lane Assist is only activated at speeds of at 70 km/h. This prevents problems along construction sites, where coaches hardly drive at speeds greater than 70 km/h. If the driver consciously changes lanes and puts the blinker on, the Lane Assist recognises this and does not give a warning.

Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL) The Continuous Braking Limiter (DBL) safety feature prevents the vehicle from accelerating beyond a predetermined speed on inclines, stabilising the speed. It makes use of the Retarder which prevents overheating of the standard brake, and which is in this case combined with a speed control. For the Continuous Braking Limiter, the driver can define a fixed speed, which should not be exceeded on inclines. Moreover the system prevents the allowed maximum speed of 100 km/h to be exceeded, through warnings in the central display and through braking interventions. Driving on inclines is therefore not only made safer but considerably more comfortable.

Level lowering and kneeling The new ComfortClass 500 is equipped with an electronic level control system. Its control mechanism sources data from 4-way sensors which are positioned outwards on the rear axle. The electronic level control offers clear benefits to operators as well as passengers. On the one hand, at high speeds, the level of the coach is automatically lowered, which in interaction with the very aerodynamic design of the ComfortClass 500, contributes to optimised fuel consumption. On the other hand, for the first time with a coach, kneeling is used as standard equipment. This allows the level of the non-moving coach to be lowered on one side, to facilitate passenger entry into the coach.

Front Collision Guard (FCG) In the case of a frontal collision, the Front Collision Guard (FCG) offers increased safety in the front part of the vehicle and reliable underride protection through a cross profile. Crash elements, with an absorber structure which transforms impact energy into distortion energy, are positioned behind the FCGs cross profile. This considerably reduces the outcome of the impact. Since the drivers work space incl. steering, pedals and seat is mounted on a massive frame component, it can be pushed backwards to maintain a protective space for the driver in the case of severe frontal impact. So, the interplay of Active Brake Assist 2 and FCG can achieve unparalleled levels of safety for the driver and attendant, and ultimately for passengers as well. The FCG fulfils the requirements of the underride guard according to ECE-R 93, as well as future legislation for pendulum impact in coaches.

The AquaBlade windshield washer system With a highly innovative profile, the AquaBlade flat-blade wipers ensure that the cleaning water is distributed very evenly on the windscreen. What is unusual about the system is that the cleaning water exits the wiper blade and is immediately directly to the area requiring cleaning. This enhances comfort, saves cleaning water, enables improved cleaning and optimised visibility and ultimately a significant plus in safety. As well, the AquaBlade flatblade wipers feature exceptional aerodynamic qualities, which also result in reduced noise.

Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) significantly reduces the risk of skidding, by counteracting the vehicles swerving through targeted braking of individual wheels. High-performance electronics monitor the signals of ESP sensors and continuously check whether the drivers steering intention and the actual motion of the vehicle correspond. If the values differ, the system instantly reduces the engine power to re-establish the vehicles balance and stability. If this is not sufficient, the system additionally brakes individual wheels. Two further active safety systems are included in the ESP system: the Anti-Block system (ABS) and the Integrated Traction Control (ASR).
