ORGAN DONATION AWARENESS PROGRAM

Life a precious object that has to be lived with all the happiness; Life where everything flows with the saying someone has it and someone does not. This saying is today applied literally a person, anybody, enjoys a healthy run around the park, kids play in the swimming pool but a world away someone sits in a hospital waiting as the clock ticks by taking with it the precious minutes of life, why? Because he is waiting for someone, anyone, willing to provide him with another chance to live. I need an organ I need a donor. On Wednesday the 2nd of May spiritus international held the inauguration of the organ donor foundation, a valiant and well accepted step in helping the cause for awareness of the importance of being a donor. This event was organized by bindu doddahatti and the members of the NGO. Helping the idea of this cause were chief guests: Dr.Malali Vasantha Kumar, Prof. Venkoba Rao, Mythri foundation, Mr.Bino James, Mohan foundation. Chief Guest Dr. Malali Vasantha Kumar delivered a speech encouraging the audience on the need for the need to donate organs after death; this thought was also carried on by Prof.Venoba Rao who voiced the same concepts. If the audience were not fully convinced by the speeches then they would change their minds to a definite yes after the PowerPoint presentation by Mr.Bino James, a powerful presentation it had all the hallmarks for a positive response. This presentation educated us on the need for donors and the various statistics countrywide. He explained

that anyone could be a donor when alive and even after death. Today many people suffer from problems of the heart and other organs therefore if people pledged their organs for donation after death many people could be saved. This is still a relatively alien concept in many places and even people who are aware of it do not take it seriously. Recently statistics on organ donor awareness has been on the rise with Chennai having the highest rates of donors this is a very successful result and motivates for the same awareness in many other states. Mr.Bino talks about cases that have been carried out successfully but also of those that have taken a huge blow. A controversial issue on a young boy who had a heart condition and needed a transplant and had received a potential donor but at the last minute received a negative response from the donors family citing religious differences, the boy with the heart condition died a few days later. This issue brings in to the limelight the law on the concept of being a donor, a willing donor himself cannot say he will donate he/she needs the acceptance from the family since that particular law is not going to change anytime soon we all received organ donor cards, these cards do not make it official that we are donors; it makes us potential donors, and it brings about acceptance not only to the willing donor but also to the family so that they can get around the idea of alienation to being a donor. The heart rendering moment during the presentation were the pictures of the people who have donated their organs after their death and the youngest being two years old and her organ has given a normal life to five year old girl. The basic foundation of organ donor program is to educate the people and breakdown the barriers that society has erected in order to ignore the problem and because of this every day the number of patients

waiting for a donor goes up. If people could eradicate beliefs that are superficial and think in a realistic manner being to save someone elses life then the problem could be solved. In a country like India this could take a long time and the organ donor concept is at its baby steps there are many a hurdle to cross before the idea is fully realized. Things must be thought through in a strategic manner too, if a country like Bangladesh donates eyes to India such a small country yet it has no problem in donating the eyes to another country then with the right methods India could have the same benefit and even better and no one would have to suffer the waiting lists again. If one person can agree to be a donor then it can change the minds of many others. While living anyone can also donate and even after we are gone from this world our presence can always be felt in the small sphere of place that holds a little part that we have given.
