COLUMBUS ACADEMY FIRST GRADE

SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 News and Notes *Mr. Vorenberg asked the teachers to review the CA dress code with students. We talked to the 1D children about headbands, belts, and a few other details. The entire Dress Code Policy is included in this packet for easy reference. *We will be working on Memory Book pages for August and September on October 5th, from 8:45 - 9:45. The students organize their own pages and they do the cutting and gluing. However, we could use a few adult volunteers to help students during this first experience with scrapbooking. If you are interested in helping, please email Mrs. Simmons. *Check your email early next week for a FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER. This newsletter will contain Important Dates for October and you will find information about our new theme - Global Marketplaces.

ASK ME ABOUT...
*Amandas Star of the Week *When to use c-k at the end of a word and when to use k-e. We learned a chant to help us remember this rule: When you see a wimpy vowel (short vowel) you need a c-k. Not just a k. You need a c-k! Here are some example words ~ pack, duck, snake, and cake. *Our most recent chapter book read aloud ~ Freckle Juice *Little Red Hen Day ~ We read several versions of The Little Red Hen (including one that was an iPad app), played LRH Memory, completed a LRH ll-in-the-blank paper, and noticed word endings in LRH books (hen - en, cat -at, duck - uck, quack - ack, etc.) Of course the kids loved our connection to Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza - we made biscuit pizzas as a yummy treat! We even wrote the steps to making a biscuit pizza. We are learning that there are many reasons to write, and one important reason to write is to tell someone else how to do something. We learned sequence words: rst, next, then, and last. *We realize that every syllable needs a vowel and we know how important vowels are - did you know if you change the vowel you can change the whole word (fun/fan, pan/pin/ pen)?! *Drama with Mrs. Bateman *Our Guest Reader - Mrs. Arikan. She read a funny Amelia Bedelia book. She also shared that she often reads for work, but she also likes to read historical ction books for pleasure. If YOU would like to be a guest reader, just let Mrs. Simmons know by email simmons@columbusacademy.org. We are lling out the schedule for the rst semester, so contact us if you would like to read any time during October, November, or December. Just give us an idea of a time frame and we will get back to you with possible dates/times. Remember - we try to limit guest readers to 2 per week. *Readers Workshop ~ We started guided reading groups this week. Two of the groups worked on Little Red Hen readers theater scripts. It was fun to change our voices for the different characters. We also visited the computer lab to use Raz Kids. Read-to-Self and Read-to-Someone are now routine parts of our day. We are building uency and we continue to ! increase our reading stamina. *Exploring the Doodle Buddy app on the iPad

math
*Unit 1 Show What You Know ~ The teachers are still checking these tests, but look for them in next weeks Thursday Folder! The Unit 2 Parent Letter is part of todays Thursday Folder. *Color Caper Game *Concept of more than/less than/ equal to *Dominoes exploration ~ we built with the dominoes, used the dominoes to make math sentences, and some of us even played the actual game of dominoes! *We will be working with phone numbers as part of our math curriculum. Please help your first grader practice his/her phone # !
