It is recommend that you do not run unnecessary background applications when installing the game. Insert Disc 1 into your computers CD drive. The Autorun menu will appear as soon as your disk drive recognizes the disk. Select to Install the game. A prompt will appear to enter your install code. Enter the install code and click on the Next button. You will then get a menu asking to choose either a default install or the advanced install (which allows you to specify an install directory). MANUAL ADDENDUM

************************************************************ VIDEO CARD SUPPORT ================== Although Direct3D is supported, this support is only officially extended to certain 3D accelerator devices. The following major D3D chipsets are supported ATI Radeon 7500 or greater Intel i865 Matrox Parhelia NVidia geForce2 or greater SiS Xabre 400 While Direct3D supports a wider variety of 3D accelerator devices, the behavior of NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND cannot be predicted in these situations. In extreme cases, running NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND with a Direct3D device that is not officially supported can lead to an unstable PC environment. Under Direct3D, the performance of NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND (in both graphics AND audio) is influenced greatly by the Direct3D driver versions that are installed. It is highly recommended that the latest versions of all video card and sound card drivers be obtained and installed. Please consult your hardware manufacturer for their newest drivers. Also, keep in mind that video chip manufacturers sometimes provide drivers in addition to the card manufacturer. Support also depends on OS NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND supports DirectSound. If your sound card driver does not support DirectSound you may experience choppy or stuttering sound or sound that cuts in and out. If your sound card driver does not support DirectSound, we recommend obtaining updated drivers from your sound card manufacturer. GENERAL SOUND CARD INFORMATION *During DirectX installation, the DirectX setup program attempts

to install a DirectSound supported driver for your sound card. If your sound card driver does not support DirectSound, the DirectX setup program attempts to replace your existing sound card driver. *Please consult your sound card manufacturer for updated drivers if DirectSound drivers are not available with the included DirectX files from Microsoft. CD-ROM DRIVES and DVD DRIVES ==================================== NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND requires at minimum an 8x CD-ROM/DVD drive. The game disk must be in the CD-ROM drive when you start the game. If your system has more than one CD-ROM drive, be sure the game disk is in the same drive from which you installed the game. DEFAULT GRAPHICS SETTINGS ============================== The first time NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND is run, a system check is performed and default levels are set for the various graphics settings. These default levels are set to provide the best game play experience possible based on the hardware detected in your system. These settings can be adjusted in the Display menu of the Options. In the Display options, choose Configure Graphics Card. Choosing Configure Graphics Card takes you to the Graphics menu with four options: Resolution: Use the arrows to increase or decrease the game resolution. Increasing the game s resolution may slow down system performance. Details: Use the plus or minus signs on the Details bar to increase or decrease global graphics setting. Increasing the Details setting to high will improve the game s graphics but may slow down system performance. Customize Display Settings: Tweak individual graphics settings. (See below.) Default Settings: Reset your graphics settings to the default for your hardware configuration. Selecting Customize Display Settings in the graphics menu takes you to the Customize Display Settings menu. The following individual settings are available to tweak to change the game s graphics output and game performance. Turning all the settings to on may slow down system performance. Car Reflection Update Rate: Use the plus and minus at either end of the bar to increase or decrease how quickly reflections visible on the car update. Car Reflection Detail: Setting this to High increases the detail of reflections visible on the car. Car Geometry Detail: Setting this to High increases geometry details on the car. World Environment Map: Turn on or off world environment mapping.

Car Shadow: Moving this slider to the right increases car shadows. By moving the slider to the left, the amount of car shadows are decreased which may improve system performance. Car Headlight: Turn on or off headlights. Crowds: Turn on or off animated crowd characters. Road Reflection Detail: Use the plus and minus at either end of the bar to increase or decrease reflections visible in the road. World Detail: Moving this slider to the right lets you to increase the amount of detail visible in world geometry. Decreasing world geometry detail (by moving the slider to the left) may increase system performance. Light Trails: Turn on or off light trails created as you drive by lights in the world. Light Glow: Turn on or off the glow on light sources. Animated Texture: Turn on or off texture animations. Particle System: Turn on or off particle effects. Motion Blur: Turn on or off motion blur. Not all graphic details are available for all video cards due to hardware limitations. ADDITIONAL CAR SELECT FUNCTIONALITY =================================== While on the car select screen, the car can be rotated by left clicking with the mouse and moving in the desired direction. When changing cars, the new car will appear in the default position, but can be moved as desired. DRIVER PROFILE AND SAVE LOAD ============================ Driver Profile: When you first start NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND, you will be prompted to create a Driver Profile. This is a save file for your global options and user data. If you are in the Main Menu and you want to create a new Driver Profile,press BACKSPACE. This logs out your current Driver Profile and lets you make a new one. When you start a new driver profile, you will not have any of the progress (unlocked cars, parts, or progress through Underground Mode) that you had in your old profile. (You can always log back in under your original profile if you want to go back.) Manual Saves: Your game can be manually saved by accessing the Save LoadMenu. This is found by going Main Menu >> Options >> Save / Load >> Save. There are 8 slots available for saves.

NOTE: A save game does not effect your driver profile. Instead, it saves your game progress. When you make a save game, you are saving your progress in Underground Mode, the number of cars, car upgrades, and tracks you have unlocked, and any modifications you have made to your cars. You cannot import save games from one Driver Profile to use with a different Driver Profile. Manual Loads: Your game progress can be manually loaded by going Main Menu >> Options >> Save / Load >> Load. Any manual saves you have made are listed here. The final game save directory is located at: \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NFS Underground

************************************************************ 4. TROUBLESHOOTING

************************************************************ INSTALLING TO THE CORRECT FOLDER ====================================== When installing NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND for the first time, please make sure that you have selected/created and highlighted the exact directory folder you want to install to. Different versions of Windows default to new folders in slightly different ways so please double-check that you have specified the intended location. CD AUTOPLAY FEATURE =================== Inserting the game CD into your CD-ROM drive and then immediately running the game either from the Windows Start menu or by double-clicking the game's Desktop icon may cause a conflict with the CD-ROM's AutoPlay feature. The easiest way to avoid this potential conflict is to always wait a few moments after inserting the CD to allow the AutoPlay feature to run the game. EJECTING THE GAME CD ==================== Never eject the game CD when the game is running. DEVICE DRIVERS ============== It is highly recommended that the latest versions of all device drivers (i.e. video and sound card drivers) be obtained and installed. Please consult your card manufacturer for their newest drivers. Also, keep in mind that video chip manufacturers sometimes provide drivers in addition to the card manufacturer. If you are experiencing issues with an unstable PC environment please make sure your Motherboard drivers (AGP, miniport) are up to date. For

further information please contact your Motherboard manufacture. VIDEO & GRAPHICS PROBLEMS ========================= If you are experiencing performance problems on the default graphics settings, try lowering some of the settings or the game resolution. This game requires DirectX 9.0 It is available for download by going to: Directx 9.0 www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/

NOTE: nVidia Detonator 44.03 Driver Game stability issues have been found when playing NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND with the nVidia 44.03 driver (commonly found on GeForce2, GeForce3 and GeForce4 video cards) and running in a Windows 98/ME environment. If you have a GeForce card and are experiencing game crashes or other instability, please update to the most recent nVidia driver. There are some known issues with the ATI Catalyst 3.8 drivers on higher end Radeon cards. If NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND fails to run or graphical anomalies occur using these drivers, try reverting back to ATI Catalyst 3.7 drivers. AUDIO & SOUND PROBLEMS ====================== INSTALLED SOUND CARD, BUT THERE IS NO SOUND *Make sure your speakers or headphones are plugged into the appropriate jack and the volume control is turned up. If this does not solve the problem make sure your sound card is installed correctly. BACKGROUND PROGRAMS =================== Avoid running other programs in the background. Programs starting up automatically can cause NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND to lose control of the screen and keyboard, possibly causing an unstable PC environment. We strongly recommend that you shut down or suspend applications that start up automatically or programs that automatically run other applications at specified times before running NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND. These include, but are not limited to: - Windows System Agent - Windows Task Scheduler - Windows "Disk Cleanup" utilities Similarly, message boxes and dialog boxes from other programs or from Windows itself can also cause NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND to lose control of the screen and keyboard, possibly causing an unstable PC environment. We strongly recommend that you shut down all other applications before running NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND. These include, but are not limited to: - Email programs - Calendar, appointment, or contact applications - Network or Internet chat programs - Automatic Update on Anti Virus software

Also, connections to/from non-dedicated servers can be disrupted when background programs or screen-savers launch. POWER MANAGEMENT SUSPEND/SLEEP MODES ============================================ Systems (i.e. laptops or other portables) that automatically power down into "sleep" or "suspended" modes can cause NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND to lose control of the screen and keyboard, possibly causing an unstable PC environment. We strongly recommend that you disable these features before running NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND. Also, connections to/from non-dedicated servers can be disrupted when sleep or suspended modes occur. ALT+TAB FUNCTIONALITY ========================= ALT+TAB will switch out of NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND, but the game does not automatically pause. If you are going to do this, pause manually before swapping windows.

************************************************************ 5. ONLINE PLAY

NOTE: NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND supports only broadband connections for online play. When logging in to play Online you are logging into the EA.com servers. If you already have one, you may use your existing online EA.com account to play or you can create a new one. Setting up an account: An EA account is required for online play. At the account log-in screen choose Create New EA Account. You will be taken to menus where you enter account information and choose your online user name. NOTE: If your existing EA account contains a space, you won t be able to use it due to a limitation in the game. You can have up to four EA Online User Names. User Names can also be deleted if you would like to change one. Starting a game online: After you log in, you have the choice to pick a car. All the cars that you have unlocked for single player Quick Race mode are available for play online. Some tuned sponsor cars will also be available but they may not be customized or used in ranked races. Main Online Menu ================ Options available in the Main Online Menu are:

Ranked Game: Every race counts toward your online ranking. Unranked Game: Unranked online races do not affect your ranking. Select Car: Switch cars for the next race. News: Catch up on the latest NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND news, or read the membership agreement. Rankings: See the top 100 online racers. Stats are shown for each race mode as well as overall leaders and the week s best track times. NOTE: If you have a Disconnect rate greater than 25% you won t be officially ranked for that event. Options: Change gameplay settings Game Mode Select ================ After you have chosen to play either a Ranked or Unranked game, the Game Mode Select screen comes up. Here, you must pick a room to race in. Use the arrow buttons to change race modes and highlight a room to race in. From this screen, you can see how many people are currently in each room. Press ENTER to enter a highlighted room. Press the Z button to create your own room. Room Menu: Each race room displays information about the racers within it. From this menu you can look at other players stats, send race challenges, and chat. Rep: Reputation points. The more you play Ranked games and win, the more reputation points you have. Playing ranked games and losing will cause your reputation to decrease. Connection: Players with more green hashes have better connections to the game server. To chat to everyone in the room, click the chat bar and start typing. Press ENTER to send the message. To bring up the challenge menu, select the user you d like to challenge and press ENTER. Head-To-Head Challenge Menu: After you select a user you would like to challenge, you are taken to this menu. Send Challenge: Pick the track and the number of laps you would like for your challenge race. To challenge another racer to a one-on-one race, highlight their name, press ENTER and select Send Challenge. Select CANCEL to cancel challenge. Challenge Options ================= View Player Details: Study another player s stats. Block Player Prevent individual players from sending you challenges.

View Car: Have a look at the highlighted player s car. Register Complaint: Used to capture chat log and send it to EA Online Services to report abuse of Membership agreement. PRIVATE MESSAGE: Sends a message to the highlighted player. (You can also send a quick private message by clicking the chat bar and typing "/tell Playername" followed by the message.) To switch to Created Games List, press right arrow button. To return to the Head to Head Challenge List press the left arrow button. Press Z to create a game or e to view/join a previously created game. Create a four-player game and wait for additional players to join. Select START GAME to begin. GENERAL ONLINE INFO =================== Frame Rate: If your frame rate dips below 12 fps for 10 consecutive frames or longer, you you should receive the message Frame Rate is too low for a Ranked Game. Lowering your graphic detail settings may help increase your framerate so you can play in ranked games. ************************************************************ 6. CONTROLLER INFORMATION

************************************************************ CONTROLLER CONFIGURATIONS ================================ NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND can be played with many popular gamepads and controller devices. If your device is not recognized, or if you'd like to modify the configuration the game has pre-assigned to your controller, enter Controller Options from Options on the Main Menu. The re-mapping tools in this menu are useful for tweaking your controller for optimal play. JOYSTICK PROBLEMS ======================= Any joystick supported by Windows will work with NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND. However, if the device is not properly configured in Windows, then erratic behavior may occur. Such symptoms include, but are not limited to: - The mouse pointer automatically scrolls through the buttons on menu screens. - Your car makes erratic movements that are not intended (i.e. continually turning). - Certain movements do not occur when the proper direction is pressed. - Sluggish response on slower machines. To correct these problems, properly configure and calibrate the device from the Windows Control Panel. If problems continue to persist,

disconnect the device from your computer before playing NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND Ensure the latest manufacturer drivers are installed for your device.. FORCE FEEDBACK SETTINGS ============================= Force Feedback is not enabled on the Customize Controller screen of the Options menu until proper, device-specific drivers are installed for that controller. The default generic drivers provided by Windows do not provide access to Force Feedback features. KEYBOARD PROBLEMS ======================= To adjust the feeling\sensitivity of the steering in gameplay when using the keyboard, enter the Keyboard option in the Windows Control Panel (Start - Settings - Control Panel). By adjusting the Repeat Delay and Repeat Rate the user can adjust the controls to feel more analog or digital depending on their preference. Some newer keyboards do not allow certain combinations of more than two keys to be depressed simultaneously. For example, if you were pressing both the up arrow key to accelerate and the left arrow key to turn, and you pressed the <END> key to change your view, view may not change.
