Background

Istiklal Avenue is regarded by many as the Champs Elysee of Istanbul. Its the most famous and fashionable pedestrian street in the city perhaps even the whole of Turkey. Istiklal pulses with life and energy, day and night, thanks to the almost 3 million tourists and locals who visit the Beyolu district every day to enjoy, among other things, the bars, cafs, restaurants and high-end shops that stretch along the two-kilometer cobblestoned avenue. When the Demirren Group, a major Turkish business conglomerate, decided to transform the historical Cercle DOrient building on Istiklal into a stunning 19,000m2 shopping mall, it was clear that the architectural lighting had to be something very special indeed. Philips Turkey was up to the challenge.

The Solution

The Challenge

Istiklal is already a vibrant, glittering street, and Demirren Mall was planned to make it even more so. The classically designed building was to be completely refurbished to offer 41 trendy shops including Turkeys first Virgin Megastore numerous eating establishments and a cinema complex. The customer wanted a modern and dynamic lighting solution that would reflect the non-stop energy of the Beyolu district. One that would be architecturally in line with other buildings in the street, but which would also make the Cercle DOrients faade stand out of the crowd. In short, the lighting had to be impressive and eye-catching, but also in harmony with its surroundings and the buildings own classical faade. Great care would also have to be taken in replacing already installed luminaires so as not to damage the iconic building.

In order to meet the customers goals, Philips Lighting designed a dynamic lighting solution that would enable a wide variety of different, esthetically pleasing lighting scenarios. We also developed special apparatus to safely install the lighting on the historic building, and ensure that the mounting would blend inconspicuously in the faade. The entrance columns, balcony parapets and other faade elements that shared the same architectural styling were illuminated vertically with RGB ColorGraze products to enliven the faade and make it beautifully imposing. To complement this effect, RGB strip LED products were placed on the roof front, illuminating it like a crown. The iColor Flex LMX Light System Manager pulls all the LED lamps together, and makes it easy to create ever-changing scenarios of rich colors and brightness, offering people walking along the street surprisingly different atmospheres and ambiences. And Philips Lighting made everything as easy as the customer could wish by coordinating the project management throughout, and overseeing installation, which was carried out by our local partner YUTEK.

The Benefits

When the Demirren Shopping Mall opened in March 2011, it immediately became one of Istiklal Avenues highlights. The products, which deliver an enchanting visual experience to visitors at night, never detract from the architecture during the day, thanks to their small size. This, along with their lack of special requirements in terms of installation, also made it possible for YUTEK to do their work in a quick, easy, cost-efficient way. And the Demirren Group is guaranteed top-notch performance and operational cost-efficiency thanks to the support they receive under their warranty. It not only includes regular preventative maintenance sessions, but also training so that designated personnel can immediately handle any minor repairs and keep the system completely upgraded with the latest, easy-to-download software. http://www.philips.com/solutions
