Introduction to Computational Intelligence

What is Machine Intelligence? What is Artificial Intelligence? What is Computational Intelligence?

Intelligent Machines

Two big questions

How does a human mind work? Can nonhumans have mind?

Engineers and scientists already built intelligent machines.

Intelligence Definition
Essential English Dictionary, Collins, London 1990 1. Someones intelligence is their ability to understand and learn things. 2. Intelligence is the ability to think and understand instead of by doing things by instinct or automatically.
the ability to learn and understand, to solve problems and to make decisions

Machine Intelligence
A science that has defined its goal as making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by humans. A machine is thought intelligent if it can achieve human-level performance in some cognitive task. To build an intelligent machine, we have to capture, organise and use human expert knowledge in some problem area.

Artificial Intelligence
The imitation of human intelligence and decision making functions, providing basic reasoning and other human characteristics/behaviour.

Artificial Intelligence
Thinking Humanly The exciting new effort to make computers think machines with minds, in the full and literal sense (Haugeland, 1985) The automation of activities that we associate with human thinking, activities such as decision making, problem solving, learning, (Bellman, 1978) Acting Humanly The study of how to make computers do things at which, at the moment, people are better (Rich and Knight, 1991) The art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people (Kurzweil, 1990) Thinking Rationally The study of mental faculties through the use of computational models (Charniak and McDermott, 1985) The study of the computations that make it possible to perceive, reason, and act (Winston, 1992)

Acting Rationally AI is concerned with intelligent behavior in artifacts (Nilsson, 1998) Computational Intelligence is the study of the design of intelligent agents (Poole et al., 1998)

Computational Intelligence

A methodology involving computing that exhibits an ability to learn and/or to deal with new situations, such that the system is perceived to possess one or more attributes of reason, such as generalization, discovery, association and abstraction (Russelet al, 1998).
