FOR RELEASE: AFTERNOON, WEDNESDAY , JANUARY 2 2 , 19 64
NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR, Jan. 22 --- Construction is on
schedule, finances are sound, and. the greatest World's Fair in
history will open on April 22 next, the members and directors of
the New York World's Fair 1964-1965 Corporation were informed at
a meeting held this morning (Wednesday, January 22) at the Top of
the Fair in the Port of New York Authority's Heliport building.
Fair officers, headed by Robert Moses, president, and Thomas
J. Deegan, Jr., chairman of the executive committee who presided at
the meeting, presented the latest progress reports.
Mr. Moses also reported on the post-Fair plans for Flushing
Meadow Park. Mr. Deegan, whose firm (Thomas J. Deegan Company, Inc.)
is in charge of advance admission ticket sales, reaffirmed his
prediction that the Fair will reach its goal of 10,000,000 tickets.
George E. Spargo, chairman of the Fair's finance committee,
presented an extremely favorable picture of finances in his report.
Mr. Spargo said that although budget estimates drawn up three years
ago indicated that the Fair would require pre-opening financing in
the amount of $40,000,000, it became apparent last September that

such an amount would not be required. Accordingly, short-term
borrowing from banks in the amount of six million dollars was
recommended by the finance committee and approved by the executive
committee. A substantial saving in interest has resulted and,
to date, only half of the authorized amount has been borrowed.
"As we approach the Opening Day of the first operating
season of the Fair," said Mr. Spargo, "great interest generated
in the project, both here and abroad, added to the interest shown
in the advance sale of tickets, confirms our original estimated
attendance figures. Construction and operating costs have followed
remarkably close to the original estimates. There will be some
slight increase in the actual cost of construction. This has been
more than compensated for by a decrease in the interest costs and
operating costs.
" ... you will see that it is our considered opinion that by
the end of the Fair, the City of New York will have been repaid the
$24,000,000 it spent on permanent park improvements in the Fair site
and that a substantial balance will be available for park improve-
ments.
"These park improvements are described in detail in a report
released by the Fair this week entitled 'Flushing Meadow and Beyond. '
This provides a master plan not only for the completion of construc-
tion of Flushing Meadow Park, so badly needed in this solidly
built-up Borough of Queens, but also of a Corridor Park extending
from Flushing Meadow Park to and through Kissena Park, Cunningham
Park, Alley Park and Douglaston Park Golf Course. With the approval
of the City of New York, the Fair Corporation could and should carry
out this proposed post-World's Fair program and leave to the City
not only the great benefits derived during the two years of operation
but a permanent park improvement as a lasting memory of a very
successful exposition."
