On the authority of Ibn Buraydah, on the authority of Yahyaa Ibn Yamar1: The first to speak about pre-decree in al-Basrah was Mabad Ibn Juhanee2. So, Humayd Ibn Abdur-Rahman al-Himyaree3 and I (i.e. Yayhaa Ibn Yamar) set out on Hajj, or al-Umrah, saying to ourselves: If we see anyone of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety, we will ask him about what these people say about pre-decree.4 So, we were given success by being able to cross paths with Abdullah Ibn Umar Ibn al-Khattaab5 while he was entering the Masjid. So, my companion and I enclosed on him, one of us on his right, and one of us his left.

Yahaa Ibn Yamar was a mid-level Taabiee. He lived in Marwa and was a judge therein. It is said that he was upright and precise in his narrations ... He died before the year 100 A.H. - [at-Taqreeb, #7728] Ibn Juhanee was from the heads of his innovation during his time. He was the first to speak about pre-decree during the time of the Companions. See Siyar Alaam an-Nubalaa, v.3/pg.185.

Humayd Ibn Abdur-Rahman al-Himyaree was a mid-level Taabiee. He was upright and precise in his narrations. He was also an Islamic Jurist. - [at-Taqreeb, #1563] [TN]: Ponder the methodology of Yahyaa Ibn Yamar, a student of the Companions. When he heard a statement that he had a question about, he took it directly to the scholars. Abdullah Ibn Umar was one of the Companions who narrated many hadeeth. He was also the most diligent of the people in trying to practically implement narrations. - [at-Taqreeb, #3514]

Taking Statements to the Scholars for Clarity I thought my companion wanted to give me the responsibility to speak, so I said: Abu Abdur-Rahman! Indeed, people appeared amongst us who read the Quraan and seek knowledge, and it has been mentioned that from their affair is that they claim there is no pre-decree, and that Allah doesnt know about events until they happen? Abdullah Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, responded to this by saying: If you see them, tell them I disavow myself from them, and that they must disavow themselves from me. By He whom Abdullah Ibn Umar swears by, if one of them possessed gold which equaled the size of Uhud, and he spent it [for the sake of Allah], Allah would not accept it until they believe in predecree. After that, he mentioned The Hadeeth of Jibreel... - [Collected by Muslim] From the benefits of this hadeeth : [1]: It is obligatory to return to the scholars in affairs of fitnah (mass confusion)6, especially mass confusion caused by unclear, ambiguous and doubtful matters.

[TN]: Allah, the Most High, says: And when there comes to them information about [public] security or fear, they spread it around. But if they had referred it back to the Messenger or to those of authority among them, then the ones who [can] draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Shaytaan , except for a few. [Soorah an-Nisaa (4): 83]

Al-Allaamah, Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sadee, may Allah have mercy on him, commented:

This [verse] is a proof for a principle in etiquette: If an issue needs to be investigated, it is befitting to allow those who are qualified handle it; the affair is to be handed over to its specialist, and no one should precede them. This is what is closet to being correct and lessens the chance for mistakes. [Tafseer as-Sadee: v.1/pg.330]

For this reason, the students of the Companions (i.e. at-Taabieen) returned back to the Companions when the problematic situation of [those who denied] pre-decree appeared.7 Translators Note: Also, Allah, the Most High, says: Ask the people of knowledge if you do not know. [Soorah al-Anbiyaa (21): 7] [2]: Its not permissible to be silent about someone who outwardly displays an innovation, even if he is from the people of knowledge8 and devout worship. The proof is that those who innovated the statement about predecree, it is mentioned that they used to seek and research knowledge; however, that did not prevent people from clarifying their condition and statement to the Companions...9

[Returning to the Scholars Deters Differing]

Shaykh Ahmad Baazmool, may Allah protect him, said:
From the affairs that I advise my brothers with is returning to the scholars. Returning to the scholars when differing occurs is very important. This is because the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets; the scholars are the ones who clarify for you the difference between truth and falsehood; they are the ones who explain affairs in detail, and they are the ones who shed light to the path.

When you dont return to the scholars, you will become grossly confused with speech that has no benefit, and your intellects could lead you to affairs that arent good, or, your intellects could lead you to other than the straight path. We find many of the youth, when they allow their intellects and opinions to judge in affairs, they invent evil paths, and they bring about affairs that increase differing and cause a lack of unity. So we learn from this that: returning to the scholars is a cause for unity, a way to come to agreements, and it is a cause for getting rid of division between the youth10. [End of Speech] In conclusion, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah exalt his mention and grant him safety, said: The best people are those from the generation that I live in. Then, the best of the people are those after us. After that, the best of people are those who benefit others the most.11 Noble reader, may Allah bless you; in this article, you have an example of the methodology of the best generations of people. And from their methodology was returning their affairs to the scholars. May Allah, the All-Able, allow us to cling to and stay firm upon their way. And our last supplication is that Allah exalt and grant safety to our Prophet, Muhammad Ibn Abdillah, his family, and his Companions.
