WAPAKONETA - The
term American hero is tossed
around a lot, but it is so appro-
priate in describing Wapakon-
eta native Neil Armstrong. The
man who was frst to set foot
on the moon has a much larger
story than just that one small
step. Since Armstrongs death
on Aug. 25, interest has been re-
newed in the career of the pilot
and astronaut. In his hometown
is an attraction that not only
takes in much of Armstrongs
career, but also highlights many
of the accomplishments of this
countrys early days in space.
The Armstrong Air and
Space Museum is open year-
round just off Interstate 75 near
the U.S. 33 interchange. Within
the confnes of the grounds are
many fascinating exhibits and
interactive displays that help
youth and adults gain a greater
knowledge and appreciation
for American heroes like Arm-
strong.
Very popular exhibits in-
clude the Gemini VIII capsule
which served as Armstrongs
frst spacecraft. He and David
Scott conducted the frst space
rendezvous and docking in
1966. Visitors have a chance to
see the capsule and to experi-
ence what it was like to perform
the docking procedure with a
simulator.
Another simulator mimics
the steps to land the Apollo lu-
nar module on the lunar surface.
Or try landing the space shuttle
in yet another simulator.
The museum itself is de-
signed to be more than a static
museum. Sound and motion
are everywhere with the three
simulators, ten audio/visual el-
ements, and seven interactive
exhibits. The Astro Theater of-
fers a movie about the landing
of the Eagle in 1969 and the
night sky projected 56 feet high
onto the dome ceiling. The In-
fnity Room is designed to give
visitors a feel for what walking
in space is like, looking around
to see only stars for as far as the
eye can see.
So much space history is
represented at the Armstrong
Air and Space Museum. There
is a replica of the 1957 Soviet
satellite Sputnik, along with the
spacesuit worn by Armstrong
while aboard Gemini VIII,
and another spacesuit from the
Apollo days. Replica capsules
from both Apollo and Gemini
give people a chance to com-
pare the progress made in just a
Armstrong described as American Hero
A blood drive in honor of
Ty Boeckman will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 29, from 6 am
until noon at Coldwater High
School in the Palace, located
at 310 North 2nd Street in
Coldwater. Donors are asked
to call 800-REDCROSS
or go online at www.
redcrossblood.org to schedule
an appointment.
Ty Boeckman, an active
member of the Coldwater
community, is currently
battling liver cancer. His
family is encouraging the
entire community to support
Ty at this blood drive in his
honor. Even while battling
cancer, Ty remains active as
Coldwater Athletic Booster
President and loves to spend
Friday nights watching his
son Kyle play football and his
daughter Amber perform with
the band.
His family has this
message: Ty Boeckman
look him up in the dictionary
and you will find nice guy, do
anything for family, friends
and neighbors and someone
we can all look up to. Four
years ago Ty had a fight with
cancer and came out on top.
Now he is in a cancer battle
again and we are all praying
for the same results. He has
been a rock throughout the
operations, chemo treatments
and all the ups and downs
that come with this damn
disease.
In this battle he has
received this life saving gift
because of the generosity of
people who are willing to
take the time to give blood
to the Red Cross. They have
decided to try to give back
by sponsoring a blood drive
in Tys name on Saturday,
Sept. 29 from 6 a.m. until
noon at Briarwood Village in
Coldwater. We thank you in
advance for taking the time
to support such a life saving
cause.
Every two seconds
someone in America needs
blood. Blood products are
needed every day by cancer
patients, accident and trauma
victims, people undergoing
surgery, or others needing
ongoing or emergency
medical care.

How to Donate blood
To schedule an

This photograph of the
Sunday School Picnic at
Edgewater Park will be on
exhibit, Sunday afternoon,
1:00 4:00, November 11, at
the exhibit of photographs and
post cards of Grand lake Saint
Marys, at the Mercer County
Historical museum in Celina.
This photograph belonged to
norman Pierce; his father was
Francis Pierce, who may have
been on this photograph. Norman
Pierce is in his 90s and lives in
Florida. Norman Pierce shared
this photograph with Ruth Gray,
who brought the photograph to
the mercer County Historical
Society. Ruth is 86 and interested
in local history. Ruths husband
was lewis Gray. lewis father
was Arthur Gray who served as
Celinas Fire Chief for years.
Ruth talked with friends
about this photograph. Ruth
thinks the photograph is of
members of a Church in Center
Township, perhaps, the Church of
God. Center Townships history
includes over a dozen churches.
I referred to the 1978 mercer
County History and the 2008,
Passport to Mercer County
History, Center Township,
for information about Center
Township Churches. I also
referred to the 1876, 1888, and
1900 maps of Center Township
on Mercer Countys Maps.

me about her memories of
Edgewater Park.
I am Joan maher Willhoff,
the daughter of mark maher.
We lived in St. Marys. Marks
brothers, Patrick, Alfred and
Arcadius, and his sister Mary
(Harold) martin lived in Celina
and opened Edgewater Park on
April 29, 1923. I think the booth
closest to the Highway was one
that you threw a ball to try to
knock down an item to win a
prize. I remember the Merry-
Go-Round and the Cottages. I
dont know how long the families
lived in Celina after the Park was
sold in 1938, but Pat moved to
Van Wert, Al to Piqua where he
opened a Skating Rink, Arcadius
to Greenville (the Mahers
Hometown), and the martins to
St. Marys where they opened
martins Restaurant, which
closed in late 1945. In that same
location, they opened a record
store and also had a Juke Box
Route. Perhaps, someone will
remember the Martins children
(Emma Jane, Joe, and George)
and will drop me a line. By
the way, the Catholic Telegraph
told of the 112 year old woman,
Emelie Weil, who died July 2,
2012 in Cincinnati. She was a
remarkable women and also was
the Grandmother of five of my
nephews and nieces.
Some of you may remember
that WBGU at Bowling Green
State University interviewed
Mercer Countians about
Edgewater Park, November
27, 2006 at the mercer County
Historical museum. The
WBGu DVD 10 Cents a
Ticket, the Stories & Glories of
old Amusement Parks in NW
Ohio. included highlights of
those interviews.
If you recognize the citizens
on the photograph, or know the
name of their Church, or if you
remember Edgewater Park, come
to the november 11 Exhibit

history of Grand lake Saint
marys for future generations.

Just checked out one
of the local caterpillars
coming home from Church
and it looked quite black.
So, depending on whom
you believe, it would appear
as though the upcoming
winter is going to be cold
and hard. Of course I think
most people dont put too
much store into what a
caterpillar looks like this
time of year.
Come to think of it you
dont see any just before
summer or spring. I guess it
makes about as much sense
as believing a groundhog
can predict when spring
will arrive. Lets just hope
that the winter will be a
carbon copy of last winter.
Saw a farmer shelling
corn just the other day,
seems as though it is too
early for that. It seemed to
be going good and the yield
appeared to be OK from
what I could see. But you
know me, Im not much
of a farmer so what do I
know. Thank God there
are those out there looking
out for our food needs. We
would sure be in bad shape
without them. Can you
remember just how good
all those homegrown foods
were when we were kids at
home on the farm?? How
good a cook mom was?
you have to wonder how
we all survived with the way
Mom cooked. She never
worried about calories or
what was right or wrong to
eat. Sure was good food.
Dont forget the
upcoming presidential
debates coming soon to
your TV. They should go
a long way in helping us
all make the right decision
come November.
you all be good out there
and guys dont forget to
tell that lovely lady you are
married to just how much
you need her and love her.
And give the kids a hug.
See you all next week.

Your 401(k) offers tax-deductible contributions, tax-deferred growth of
earnings potential and a variety of investment options so its a great tool
for building retirement savings. Yet like all tools, your 401(k) must be used
properly to get the best results. Thats why you should review your 401(k) at
least annually and make whatever adjustments are needed.
Depending on where you work, you may get some 401(k) review help
from your plan provider. But if that assistance isnt available, you might want to
consult with a financial professional to make sure youre getting the maximum
benefit from your plan.
As you begin to review your 401(k), your first question should probably
be this:
How much should I contribute? At the very least, try to put in enough to
receive your employers matching contribution, if one is offered. If you dont
earn this match, you are essentially walking away from free money. Beyond
this, though, the amount you put into your 401(k) might depend on what other
retirement savings vehicles you have available. For instance, if youre eligible,
you may also want to contribute to a Roth IRA, which offers tax-free growth
potential, provided youve had your account for five years and dont start
taking withdrawals until youre 59.
Of course, its not only how much you put into your 401(k) that determines
its success its also how you choose to allocate your investment dollars.
(Keep in mind that asset allocation does not guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.) Your 401(k) may have a dozen or more investment choices,
such as stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. To choose the right
investment mix, youll need to consider a variety of factors, including these:
Your age Generally speaking, the younger you are, the more
aggressive you can afford to be with your 401(k) investments, because
youll have decades in which to potentially overcome the inevitable down
periods of the market. As you get older, you may wish to invest somewhat
more conservatively, but youll still need some growth potential in your 401(k)
portfolio.
Your goals Everyone has different goals for retirement. You might
want to retire early and travel the world, while your co-worker desires to
work as long as possible and then, upon retirement, stay close to home and
pursue hobbies. Because you each have different goals, with different income
needs, you also may need to follow different investment strategies within your
401(k).
Your other retirement income sources If you have a variety of
retirement income sources a pension from another job, an IRA, a spouse
with generous retirement benefits you may need to invest differently,
perhaps less aggressively, than if you had fewer options for retirement
income.
Apart from putting away as much as you can into your 401(k) and
choosing the right investment mix, what else can you do to get the most out
of your plan? Heres a suggestion: If you have worked at various jobs and
acquired multiple 401(k)s, consider rolling them over into one account. You
might save money on fees and reduce paperwork, but more importantly,
youll be able to concentrate your resources and pursue a unified investment
approach, with your investment dollars working together toward your ultimate
retirement goals.
As you can see, a 401(k) review and rollover can reward you in many
ways so do whatever it takes to maximize your 401(k)s performance.

John M. Yoder, Financial Advisor
As youre well aware, were living in diffcult economic times. Consequently, you may be
forced to make some fnancial moves you wouldnt normally undertake. One such move you
might be considering is taking out a loan from your 401(k) plan but is this a good idea?
Of course, if you really need the money, and you have no alternatives, you may need to
consider a 401(k) loan. Some employers allow 401(k) loans only in cases of fnancial hardship,
although the defnition of hardship can be fexible. But many employers allow these loans for
just about any purpose. To learn the borrowing requirements for your particular plan, youll need
to contact your plan administrator.
Generally, you can borrow up to $50,000, or one-half of your vested plan benefts, whichever
is less. Youve got up to fve years to repay your loan, although the repayment period can be
longer if you use the funds to buy a primary residence. And you pay yourself back with interest.
However, even though its easy to access your 401(k) through a loan, there are some valid
reasons for avoiding this move, if at all possible. Here are a few to consider:
* You might reduce your retirement savings. A401(k) is designed to be a retirement savings
vehicle. Your earnings potentially grow on a tax-deferred basis, so your money can accumulate
faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. But if you take
out a 401(k) loan, youre removing valuable resources from your account and even though
youre paying yourself back, you can never regain the time when your money could have been
growing.
* You might reduce your contributions. Once you start making loan payments, you might
feel enough of a fnancial pinch that you feel forced to reduce the amount you contribute to
your 401(k).
* You may create a taxable situation. Failure to pay back loans according to the specifed
terms can create a taxable distribution and possibly subject the distribution to a 10% penalty.
* You may have to repay the loan quickly. As long as you continue working for the same
employer, your repayment terms likely will not change. But if you leave your employment, either
voluntarily or not, youll probably have to repay the loan in full within 60 days and if you dont,
the remaining balance will be taxable. Plus, if youre under age 59, youll also have to pay a
10% penalty tax.
Considering these drawbacks to taking out a 401(k) loan, you may want to look elsewhere
for money when you need it. But the best time to put away this money is well before you need
it. Try to build an emergency fund containing at least six to 12 months worth of living expenses,
and keep the money in a liquid vehicle. With this money, youre primarily interested in protecting
your principal, not in earning a high return.

few short steps at nASA.
Also inside the museum is
a real piece of space explora-
tion. A moon rock collected
by the Apollo 11 crew is on
display. you can also get an
upclose look at a model of the
Saturn V rocket which was the
power to put Armstrong and the
other Apollo astronauts beyond
earths orbit.
Armstrong not only few
spacecraft, but also other fy-
ing vehicles like jets, gliders,
and helicopters. An Aeronca
Champion in which Armstrong
learned to fy at the age of 15
at an airfeld near Wapakoneta
is proudly displayed, as is an
F5D Skylancer experimental
airplane which was also fowed
by Armstrong as a test pilot.
The museum was proposed
on the very day Armstongs step
on the lunar surface was made.
Ohio Gov. James Rhodes pro-
posed the museum, not just as
an honor for the Ohio native,
but also for all Ohioans who
have attempted to defy gravity,
and to provide a history of the
space program. Of the $1 mil-
lion originally set aside to con-
struct the museum, more than
half was raised by the citizens
of Wapakoneta who wished
to honor their native son. The
museum opened its doors for
the frst time exactly three years
after Armstrongs giant leap for
mankind.
The museum remains dedi-
cated to the states aeronautical
history as well as Ohios con-
tributions to aviation and space
exploration from the early days
through current times.
The cost is reasonable also.
Adult admission is $8 with chil-
dren 6-12 just $4, and group
rates are available. The museum
is open from labor Day through
memorial Day Tuesday - Satur-
day from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. and
Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Be-
tween memorial Day and labor
Day, the museum is also open
on monday from 9:30 a.m. - 5
p.m. However, the Armstrong
Air and Space Museum is al-
ways closed on Thanksgiving
Day, Christmas Day, and new
years Day.

4-H Week
national 4-H Council
announced the launch of
the fall 2012 4-H Paper
Clover Campaign in part-
nership with Tractor Sup-
ply Company (TSC). This
event marks the beginning
of the third year of col-
laboration between the
organizations on the na-
tional in-store fundraiser,
benefting state and local
4-H programming in each
of the communities where
a TSC store is located.
The fall 2012 4-H Pa-
per Clover Campaign will
take place September 19
through September 30,
2012. Shoppers at the
Celina area [TSC] store
will have the opportunity
to support 4-H in mer-
cer County by purchas-
ing paper clovers for a
$1 or more at checkout.
All funds raised will be
donated to 4-H, and will
support local 4-H youth
development program ac-
tivities.
Through this highly
impactful community
event, we have been able
to raise funds nationally
over the past few years for
thousands of 4-H youth
across the country, said
Donald T. Floyd Jr., presi-
dent and CEO of national
4-H Council. We are
more than pleased with the
success of the 4-H Paper
Clover Campaign, and we
are even more honored to
continue the tremendous
partnership that drives
support for 4-H clubs and
programs in the commu-
nities of more than 1,000
Tractor Supply Company
and Dels Feed and Farm
Supply stores.
In just two years, the
TSC 4-H Paper Clover
Campaign has provided
more than $1.6 million
to 4-H across the coun-
try, with 70 percent of the
funds returning to state and
local 4-H programs. The
effort has provided direct
support for local camps,
after-school programs
and other activities, and
has granted scholarships
to these events that youth
can explore their interests
in everything from animal
science to robotics.
Our Paper Clover ef-
forts are one of the key
ways our stores can give
back to the community,
said John Wendler, senior
vice president of market-
ing for Tractor Supply
Company. By provid-
ing essential funding for
hundreds of thousands of
4-H young people, we are
able to support local orga-
nizations that are impor-
tant to both our customer
and our Team Members.
Were proud to help im-
prove the many commu-
nities in which we have
stores through our part-
nership with 4-H. That is
what Tractor Supply is all
about.

But do you have control over
what your child does when he

a question that haunted Paul
Allen. On the evening of June
16
th
he was sitting down in his
suburban Connecticut home
to a dinner of pizza with his
wife and ten-year-old twin
sons. In less than twenty-four
hours, life as he knew it would
not exist. Pauls twenty year
old son, Daniel had just shot
the front-running Democratic
presidential candidate at a
rally in Los Angeles. It
was all over the news.
And before Paul could
process this, there were
Secret Service agents
at his door. That is
how it happens. life

Danny was what some
would call a strange youth. He

ever considered him dangerous.
A boy whose divorced parents
lived on opposite sides of the
country, his life was different
than most of his peers. On
holidays and school breaks
he flew cross-country alone.
One might say this made him
worldlier. He dropped out of the
highly selective Vassar College
after one semester without
informing either of his parents.
Not typical behavior, but then
again not something no college
freshman has ever done.
life changes on a dime.
A once well-respected
rheumatologist, admired by
colleagues, Dr. Paul Allen now
experienced the wrath and scorn
of co-workers and strangers on
the street. He did have a few
true friends that stuck by him.
One of those was murray, who
luckily had some connections.
Since Daniel was an adult,
there was no obligation to allow
him visitors. Murray called the
Department of Justice who sent
him to Homeland Security, who
brushed him off. He then called
a fellow he knew at the FBI and
leaked a story to another guy at
CBS. Without this intervention,
Daniel would have received
substandard medical care and
be required to make decisions
on his own without the advice
of family. murrays contacts
were able to pull some strings
and gave Paul the opportunity
to talk with his son. But since
Danny was not forthcoming
with information, it was up to
Paul to find the truth.
Are the parents responsible
for the sins of the
child? At some point
the accountability
must shift to the next
generation. Still,
Paul believed that an
impressionable youth
could be controlled
and persuaded to do
something gallant
for the wrong reasons.
If Daniel was coerced and
pulled the trigger for someone
else, his father was going to
make sure he was not convicted
of the crime. meanwhile, the
rest of the family also suffered.
Relationships were strained
while Paul desperately tried
to find answers and spare his
oldest son. When evidence
reached a dead end, should he
give up? Does a good father
ever give up on his child?
Elections are about hope. The
assassination of the senator
from montana slashed the
dreams of the country. When
hope is gone, and his child is
sitting on death row, whats
left? After following every
lead, does he finally accept that
fact that maybe his son is guilty
as accused? How much more
can the good father sacrifice?

JUST WHAT YOU WANTED
It is that time when everyone
who has access to a computer
feels the necessity to convince
everyone else that they have
the answer in the upcoming
election. In addition to
newspapers, magazines, mass
mailings, and computer blogs,
we are inundated by phone calls
and the most irritating political
TV commercials imaginable. I
am sure you all are aware of this
situation and may ask why it is
even worth the mention.
We do have a lot of angry
people these days with most of
that anger directed toward one of
the two presidential candidates
and his party. I am suggesting
that our anger or frustration
should not necessarily be
directed toward the candidates,
but the system which is greatly
influenced, if not controlled, www.mercercountychronicle.com

FOCUS ON FALL
by the multi-millionaires,
billionaires, corporations, and
interest groups, who have taken
control of the hen house. In one
of the more surprising Supreme
Court rulings in the past century,
the Court reversed previous Court
rulings and decided money and
speech were essentially the same
thing. The court ruled in Citizens
United in 2010 that limiting
political expenditures also limited
free speech, so the super rich can
buy all the influence or commercial
time they wish. It seems the free
speech of us ordinary folks is
overwhelmed by the propaganda
of the really rich and powerful.
We may think we are wise
enough to see through the trickery
of todays propagandists, but
these guys are really good. If
advertising does not work, why
would astute businesses spend
billions on the practice? Have you
noticed how supermarkets make
you hungry with the smell of
baked goods when you first walk
in the door, or why you have to
walk through the store to get to the
milk you needed which is usually
located in the back. Or have you
noticed the expensive choices for
most items are on the shelf at eye
level, with less expensive brands
located where you have to reach
or bend over?
Perhaps the biggest players
in the political campaign money
game are the folks in the petroleum
business. Corporations like
Exxonmobil and Shell are multi-
national businesses with interests
and stock holders throughout
the world. It would appear these
corporations are attempting to
influence our countrys elections,
but their primary obligation is to
represent investors with varied
international financial interests,
not necessarily the best interests
of the united States. At present,
because of the Court ruling and
lack of congressional action, we
do not even know who is trying
to pull our strings. At present the
name and likely motives of the
money/ political manipulators
do not need to be disclosed. The
day after this novembers election
the winners will solicit and accept
funds for the next campaign. They
do no have to play this game, so
some will chose not to and seek
another profession, many as a
lobbyist. This political problem
is my greatest concern in our
country.
Wall
(Continued from page 7)
Every weekend of the
last few months you have
spent mowing, weeding,
edging, and trimming your
lawn so that it will look
its best. In order to ensure
your lawn makes a com-
plete recovery after winter
hibernation, you may want
to spend the fall taking
steps to help your lawn
survive the winter months
ahead.
Winterizing a lawn var-
ies depending on where
you live and how harsh a
typical winter is. There are
certain key tasks to com-
plete before you can rest
for the winter season.
* Remove fallen leaves
and debris. leaf cleanup
is among the tasks hom-
eowners dread the most.
Raking leaves can be ar-
duous, but it is well worth
the effort. Fallen leaves
can smother the grass and
lead to dead spots and de-
cay next season. Wait until
the majority of the leaves
have fallen from the trees
before you begin to rake;
otherwise, you could find
yourself repeating the pro-
cess throughout the fall.
Mulched leaves can be
added in small amounts
to garden beds to provide
rich organic material for
next years crop of flow-
ers.
Be sure to pick up any
twigs and other debris as
well. Additional debris
can become up trapped
under snow and hinder
grass growth when spring
arrives.
* Cut your lawn short.
Unless the season is un-
seasonably wet and warm,
your lawn shouldnt grow
too much in October and
November. Continue to
cut your lawn until there
is no visible growth for
about two weeks. It pays
to give it a short cut before
frost arrives so that long
piles of dead grass will not
smother any new growth
in the spring. Also, long
grass tends to bend down
upon itself, trapping mois-
ture that can lead to fungal
diseases like snow mold.
* Aerate the lawn. Soil
can be compacted over
time, especially in yards
that see heavy foot traffic.
you can rent an aerator
from a lawn supply store
so that water and fertilizer
can reach the soil.
* Fertilize. Now is the
time to give the lawn fresh
food to overwinter and
also replenish the strength
of the root system. All
summer long the lawn has
been depleting the soil of
nutrition, but autumn pres-
ents a great opportunity
to strengthen those roots.
Consider a slow-release
formula designed for win-
terizing that will feed the
lawn all winter long.
* Edge the garden beds.
Take advantage of the
cooler weather and slow-
growing grass to re-edge
around flower beds. Even
though the grass above
the surface of the soil will
stop growing, the roots
will remain viable and the
lawn will still be sending
out rhizomes and tillers to
produce new grass blades
in the spring. These can
easily encroach on garden
beds. Edge now so you
will have less work to do
in the spring.
* Trim hedges and trees.
If there are any overhang-
ing tree branches or shrub-
bery blocking sunlight
from reaching the lawn,
cut back these areas once
the foliage has thinned.
Take advantage of your
towns leaf and twig pick-
up services.
* Seed bare patches.
Scour the lawn for bare
patches and put down some
seed in these areas. The
cooler weather will enable
the seeds to germinate
without having to compete
with weed growth.
Once you have prepared
your lawn for the winter
you can bring in any lawn
tools that need repair and
have them set and packed
away for the spring.

Refer to last years

People rely on fire and
smoke detectors to help keep
them safe in their homes.
Though fire and smoke alarms
are effective, a firm fire safety
plan that will keep everyone
calm should a fire occur could
make the difference between
life and death.
The U.S. Fire Administra-
tion says that more than 3,500
Americans die each year in
fires, while roughly 18,300
more men, women and children
are injured each year. Cooking
accounts for the greatest per-
centage of residential fires, fol-
lowed by arson. Dryer vent fires
are also a big concern. FEMA
says that smoke, rather than the
fires flames, is responsible for
75 percent of all deaths by fire.
In addition to physical
injury and material damage,
fires can cause a host of prob-
lems. Psychological distress,
monetary damages and loss
of pets may come with fires.
loss of irreplaceable personal
items is also a concern. Al-
though fires can be devastat-
ing, theyre also highly pre-
ventable, and smoke alarms
and a home fire safety plan
are two precautionary mea-
sures everyone should take.
Creating an evacuation
plan doesnt have to be com-
plicated. Such a plan can be
established in a few minutes
and then reinforced through
practice every so often to
keep everyone fresh on what
to do.
* Begin by assessing the lay-
out of the home. Figure out the
two best exits from the home.
* If your home doesnt have
two doors, invest in a fire ladder
so that one of the windows can
be a point of exit.
* Know how to gain access
to the exits, including the best
path to take to avoid injury. Its
a good idea to consider a few
different scenarios. A kitchen
adjacent to the upstairs staircase
may become engulfed in flames
and make exit by way of stair-
case impossible. Just because
you have doors to the outside
doesnt mean theyll present the
best type of exit.
* Sketch out the layout of
the home and the escape plan.
Smoke can make it difficult to
know up from down. Be sure
everyone can reach the exits
even if vision is obstructed. Try
it with your eyes closed.
* Check fire alarms routine-
ly, and change batteries at least
every year.
* Make sure windows can
be easily opened if they are an
exit point.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

Question: I have an older pet. What are some things I can do to help him during his
later years?
Watch for signs of changes in your pet. These changes may include:
Signs of discomfort (panting, pacing, not wanting to go for walks)
Signs of internal changes (drinking more or less, urinating more, lack of appetite vomiting,
lethargy, changes in the feces)
Watch for cognitive signs (increase clinginess, change in sleep and wake cycle, loss of
house training).
Look for lumps and bumps on their body. While most are benign some may be
cancerous. Cats normally do not develop these bumps so if you detect these contact your
veterinarian right away.
Your pet may develop hazy eyes. This is lenticular sclerosis that affects vision only at
distances and in low light. It does not generally require treatment. The white clouds on the lens
are usually cataracts. They block the vision. They may cause your pet to have a harder time
climbing stairs or navigating the yard. They can be left alone but tend to cause blindness or a
secondary infammation of the eye called uveitis. Severe cases require cataract surgery.
Bad breath is a sign that your pet needs their teeth cleaned or dental disease. If
untreated, oral bacteria can spread to the bloodstream and the heart valves. This causes a
life-threatening infection. Dental disease may be severe plaque build-up, gingivitis, bleeding
gums, tooth loss, or ulcers. Bad breath may be a signal that your pet has kidney disease or
diabetes.
Talk to your veterinarian about these any of these signs. Be sure to discuss a plan for your
senior pet. By following their guidelines, you can give your pet a healthy, happy, long life.
Here are some helpful Suggestions for pet owners for their aging pets are:
Talk to your veterinarian about what type of food to feed you pet. A senior diet that is
lower in fat and higher in protein is recommended.
Adjust your exercise routine. Instead of a long walk, take several short strolls. Also,
swimming or walking on wet sand is good.
Place steps stools or ramps to offer them access to their favorite spots or place carpets
down on slippery foors.
Buy your cat a litter box with low side for easier in and out.
Elevate your dogs food and water dishes. Lower your cats dishes for easier access.
Buy a plush bed that allows them to lie in it without resting on the foor but easy enough
to climb into.
Discuss any questions or concerns with your veterinarian regarding your senior pets
health.
