Sister Dominics bad habits Sister Dominic was constantly spilling things down her much stained habit to the annoyance of Sister Gertrude, who one day gave Dominic a good boot up the behind. Gertrude, why did you kick Sister Dominic? asked Mother Superior. I didnt, I just kicked her habit.
The Department of Health, backed by the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK, have launched Stoptober a scheme to help smokers who want to kick the habit. Apparently 2.7 billion is spent annually to provide medical help for people with smoking related illnesses. Smoking is addictive and one of the problems with any addiction is that the body becomes dependent upon the drug. The body chemistry changes and adapts, and any person who tries to break the habit finds themselves fighting against their own body. The NHS Stoptober scheme will run from the 1st to the 28th of October - details and helpline on www.smokefree.nhs or 0800 022 4332. Any Roman Catholic will tell you that 28th October is St Judes day, the patron saint of hopeless causes. Im not one for the saints myself but if I had to have a saint, then St Jude would be the one for me because, if were honest, we all struggle with some addiction or human weakness that wed like to be rid of. Facing our addictions is never easy; we have to acknowledge that we have a problem, and face the fear of tackling it. We also fear what others might think of us, especially if we fail on our first attempt. Some years ago, in a different parish, a number of smokers in my congregation set up a support group to help each other give up smoking. They met to talk and made themselves available to help others 24/7. They also prayed for each other, asking for Gods strength and grace to see them through. I recommend this if you too are facing trials and difficulties. As one Christian wrote: ...Jesus, the Son of God.. himself has suffered and shared fully in all our experience of temptation, except that he never sinned. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with fullest confidence, that we may receive mercy for our failures and grace to help in the hour of need. Hebrews 4:15-16 Christian greetings,

Envelope scheme
As Simon indicated in the September issue we are running the envelope scheme this month. With the new homes in Sherfield Park and elsewhere (and more to come?) we are constantly increasing the circulation list. Your donations will mean that we can continue to deliver the magazine free to your door every month, as well as develop and improve it. Please give generously! You can hand your envelope into one of the collection points at the Post Office, The Shop, the Community Centre in Sherfield Park or The Iron Duke in Stratfield Saye. Or you can make a direct BACS payment (account Loddon Valley Link; sort code 30 90 53, account no. 02288365). Dont forget you can also contribute using our easyfundraising scheme; see the website for more details. Distribution As well as relying on donations we are also grateful for the sterling work of our volunteer distributors. If you are a distributor you will find an invitation to a tea party in November to say thank you. Do help our caterers by letting us know as soon as you can whether you are able to come! We are always glad of more distributors but at the moment we particularly need people in Sherfield Park (contact Eileen Leivesley on 882938) and Stratfield Saye (contact Penny Mayo on 01189 332379). As usual, comments, criticism and especially compliments on the magazine to:editor@loddonvalleylink.hampshire.org.uk.

Report by Chris Horton Weve had two meetings since the last report; the first being a book evening and the second a play reading. This year our choice of book was part of the Big Read. Members voted on a list of titles suggested by NWR and chose Started Early, Took My Dog by Kate Atkinson. Natalie led the evening and started by giving us a brief biography of the author, keeping a lively discussion going throughout the evening. There were some strong opinions, and taking into account the views of those not at the meeting, it seemed that the vast majority of the group did not enjoy the book. Reasons given for dislike of the book: just too unbelievable, nobody would act like that and some felt that the style was difficult to follow jumping back and forth in time for no apparent reason - and those opposed to it felt that style of writing did not enhance the readers enjoyment. A minority had enjoyed the book; one member had enjoyed it so much she had read another of Kate Atkinsons novels and planned to read more. The play chosen by the group was Calendar Girls by Tim Firth, to fit in with this years NWR theme of facing a challenge. Based on a true story of eleven WI members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund, Calendar Girls opened at the Chichester Festival Theatre and has since become the fastest selling play in British theatre history. The rights for amateurs to perform the play have recently been released and there are currently several local productions under way. There were some very memorable and funny lines and the evening was enjoyed by the 19 members who packed into Lizs front room for the reading. Calendar Girls is perhaps best known for the famous nude scene; however, although we read and enjoyed the play in full we all kept our clothes on!
Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council Have your say on flooding in Hampshire Hampshire County Council, like other councils across the country, is in the process of preparing a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy. The focus of this strategy is on flooding from surface water, groundwater, streams and ditches, which is becoming increasingly common due to climate change. Until recently, however, no organisation has had direct responsibility for it. Hampshire County Council is now taking the lead on managing this type of local flooding. From 24 September a draft version of the Local Flood Risk Management Strategy will be available online at: www.hants.gov.uk/flooding/floodriskstrategy. The Council would like as many individuals as possible (not just in Sherfield) to comment on the strategy and an online form will allow you to do this. The consultation will close at noon on Monday 5 November. Terrapins The parish council, in common with several residents, has been concerned at the presence of terrapins in the Horse Pond and the effect that these may have on wildlife. Members have taken some professional advice and, as result, an expert in catching terrapins visited the pond and was successful in netting one of them. The terrapin was not harmed in this process and has been passed on to a suitable home. As terrapins hibernate at the bottom of the pond from the end of September until the onset of spring, it is unlikely that any attempts will be made before then to catch the remainder. In the meantime, may we please ask residents not to deposit unwanted terrapins in the ponds. Grit bins With winter fast approaching, we would be grateful if residents could take a moment to check on any grit bins near their properties and let the clerk know if they need refilling. The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 10 October at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall all welcome! Julie Collins - Clerk to the Parish Council, Sherfield-on-Loddon, PO Box 6862, Basingstoke, RG24 4QZ Telephone: 01256 473927 Email: clerk@sherfieldonloddon-pc.gov.uk

Were only one month on since the last time I wrote to you, but so much has happened! A number of residents have contacted me with concerns about the railway service in Bramley, such as trains being too old and unreliable and crossing barriers being down for too long. I am currently in correspondence with First Great Western, so please let me know what you think. A new SHLAA (Strategic Housing Land Assessment) has assessed a number of sites in Bramley and Sherfield for development potential. I put forward a submission to the Councils Planning and Infrastructure Committee asking for sites to be taken out entirely or, if that is not possible, that our Parish Councils should be able to control any development through Neighbourhood Planning. At this stage we are not looking at the allocation of any sites; just at whether they could be considered for allocation later in the process. An awfully convoluted process, I know, but one that we have to follow. A bigger challenge is the rise in suggested housing numbers for the Borough as a whole. You may recall that we previously had argued the numbers down from 945pa to 594pa (across the whole Borough). Following the challenge to the previously proposed Local Plan and consequent change to rules on housing numbers we are now being told that we can only argue the numbers down from 945pa to 770pa (across the whole Borough). I will continue to argue for the lowest possible number; I may be wrong, but I believe there is evidence out there that could bring it down further, even under the new rules. We shall see. Thats all the space I have here, but I did have a few other updates on policing, highways and RAF Odiham all available on my website (www.tellRanil.com) and, if I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The Womens Institute Reported by Ilene Iles Dee Bulpitt, our President opened our September Meeting on a lovely afternoon. The Business Meeting included officers reports and arrangements for future events. The talk on local breast cancer charity The Pink Place was given by Jan Hall, replacing Julia Dingwall who had very sadly died. Julia and Janice Taylor, a hairdresser in Basingstoke, founded the charity in September 2010 to offer a complimentary service of pampering to cancer sufferers following surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They are treated to six free pamper visits on alternate Mondays in Janices salon (which is closed to normal clients on a Monday) including hair and beauty treatments, aromatherapy, Indian head massage, reflexology, manual lymphatic drainage and bone therapy. They are awaiting charity status yet and are looking for larger premises - as well as more funds! Catherine Wright gave the vote of thanks. A lovely tea followed and the raffle was drawn. Next meeting: Wednesday, 3rd October 2012 at 2pm. Speaker: Mr D Bright Wildlife in Scotland Stratfield Saye Events Parish Council Coffee Morning/Christmas Lunch Don't forget the coffee mornings - 11am in Stratfield Saye Village Hall; all welcome. 1st October (belated MacMillan Coffee Morning - please come and support us & perhaps bring some cakes). A Great Show! says judge. On Saturday 1st September, Sherfield Village Hall was a successful showcase for local gardening and craft skills. Once again, Mr. Brian Raisborough did sterling work, cheerfully greeting people at the door and auctioning the entries which entrants kindly donate. Sue Cooper, Show Treasurer said, As the costs of staging the Show are increasing, we are very grateful for peoples generosity on the door and at our auction. This is the Shows 46th year - a lovely village tradition and it is always a very happy occasion All the judges commented on the high standard of our 401 entries, added committee member Anna Scott. Horticultural entries were down due to the poor weather but we were pleased with the number of handicraft, cookery, art and photography entries. Next year, we hope to see lots of garden produce and would love more children to take part. I like the build-up, said Erin Cook (Junior Classes). Its really exciting waiting to find out how Ive done and Im very pleased to have won two cups. In this Jubilee year, there were chocolate gold medals for children as well as monetary prizes and rosettes. Mrs Natalie Larner, Show Secretary said, The committee would like to thank Mrs Peggy Hutchins, for presenting the trophies, our stewards, the refreshments team, raffle prize donors, visiting stallholders and all those families and individuals who supported us on the day. We will soon be presenting a donation from the Show to local Guiding and Scouting groups.

A selection of judges comments Childrens classes The childrens entries were excellent and a delight to judge. A lot of care and imagination had gone into preparing exhibits, many of which brought a smile to my face Horticultural classes: Fewer entries this year but still of a very high standard. A very good Show! Fine art: A wide range of materials and techniques, strong composition, with varied and original approaches in the use of colour. Photography: A very high standard throughout, excellent presentation and imaginative interpretations within each given brief. Liqueurs: There was a good standard, with entries in general showing good colour and alcohol balance. Home produce and handicrafts judges were also impressed by the high standard of work. To see a full list of trophy winners and photos of this years show, visit the Show website at www.sherfieldshow.hampshire.org.uk

There have been a few recent burglaries, some due to thieves getting access to the rear ground floor of the properties and one letterbox burglary, where the front door had not been double-locked with the key so thieves could open it. Three men have been arrested for breaking into the containers on the Sherfield Park building site; they are suspected of committing a number of offences there. There have been arrests relating to drug dealing in Chineham following reports from residents about suspicious activities. This is a good example of why it is so important to report anything abnormal. Residents are urged to be considerate during Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations. Throwing an egg or other missile at a person is an assault, and egging property is criminal damage. When trick or treating, please respect the wishes of residents who ask not to be called on. It is an offence to set off fireworks after 11pm (midnight on November 5 and 13).

Last Night Of The Proms The Proms event on Saturday 8th was a successful fundraiser and a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We have had many requests to hold a similar event in 2013 so if you missed it this year please make a note in your diary for next year. Village Defibrillator Please spread the word! The Village now has a defibrillator, a life-saving machine for use in case of a suspected heart attack. It is located in the central porch outside the front of the Village Hall and the box in which it is stored is alarmed. The machine will talk the user through the process of what to do but you can also view a video and user manual on the village hall website. Can you help? As a charity, the only regular income the Hall receives is from its hiring fees. Continued local support and fundraising is thus essential to bridge the gap between income from bookings and the cost of running the Hall. LAMBETH PALACE
On Friday 8th September thirty-four members of St. Leonards congregation left Sherfield for Lambeth Palace, the London residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury. We were very privileged as congregation member Karen West is PA at Lambeth Palace and conducted us on a private tour. Her role at the Palace is to familiarise newly appointed bishops with their new duties, . Having negotiated the busy London traffic, we walked through the gate of Mortons Tower into utter tranquillity. We passed a massive fig tree bearing a healthy ripening crop, a descendant of the tree brought from Italy in 1556 by Cardinal Pole (Queen Mary Is Roman Catholic Archbishop). Entering the main door in the York stone faade of the Palace, we climbed the impressive staircase from where Karen conducted us through to the Guard Room. This wood panelled room with its original wooden vaulted ceiling is now hung with portraits of Archbishops of Canterbury going back centuries, and is used for large gatherings and meetings. Originally it was the headquarters for the private armies of Archbishops at times of conflict between church and state. We admired the dining room where Pope Benedict XVI dined two years ago and where the portrait of the current Archbishop Rowan Williams, hangs. We went into the State Drawing Room, a pleasantly comfortable room where the Archbishop conducts many receptions, meetings and interviews. In the library we saw beautiful leather bound volumes, many of which were written in Latin - prompting John Dodd to recall some of his grammar school Latin. The main chapel, one of the oldest parts of the palace, was bombed in the war which destroyed both roof and windows. It was restored with attractive stained glass and a 1950s contemporary style of painted ceiling, being rededicated by Archbishop Fisher in the presence of the Queen in 1955. (continued on next page)
Page 39
Whilst the chapel was being restored, Archbishop Fisher created a new chapel in the crypt. This peaceful room is still the chapel of choice for daily worship and we had a midday service there just for us, conducted by the Archbishops Chaplain Canon Michael Camp. He read the following message from the Archbishop: It is a great delight to be able to welcome you to Lambeth Palace and Im sorry not to be able to deliver these words in person. Im sure youll have had a memorable visit and I specially hope that youll have enjoyed the beautiful garden on a sunny day. Our forebears seem not to have appreciated our need for loos in places of worship or indeed separate accommodation for childrens work. I can well imagine how important is your current project to rectify this oversight! I trust that your visit to Lambeth will have been an agreeable way of raising funds. Press on and keep up the good work. We did indeed enjoy our picnic in the amazing and sunny gardens before heading back to the coach. Thank you, Karen, for organising a delightful tour to your unique place of work.

In most cases South East Water will install the meter on the external stop tap which is normally found in the footpath at the boundary of the property, and any disruption caused will thus be minimal. In a very small number of cases such as blocks of flats or where there are shared supplies, the meter may need to be installed inside the property (often under the kitchen sink). If you would like further information about the metering programme, advice on water efficiency or details of financial support available, please visit www.southeastwater.co.uk or call the metering helpline on 0333 000 0003.
