with worse news than she expected. Her trouble hearing was caused by a glomus jugular tumor growing in her head and into her ear canal. The 5 centimeter tumor at first caused her to feel dizzy, then as it grew and displaced the hearing mechanism in her ear. She lost all her hearing in her right ear. Surgery is a last ditch option and hopefully only years in the future. Since the tumor grew amid vital nerves and arteries, the surgery would probably last between 12-18 hours and would leave her with a need for a feeding tube and loss of motor abilities to half of her body. Her best current option is to treat the symptoms and to keep the tumors growth in check. As her husband had no insurance through his work, she and her family have had to pay everything out of pocket. What's worse is that the only doctors that know how to deal with this sort of tumor are out of town. So her current option is to treat the

tumor's growth through radiation and medication. Unfortunately, this treatment only controls the extent of the tumor's growth, but cannot eradicate it. As her sister, Berta Black, says, " I'm proud that she is getting through this as best as she can. The treatment is particularly stressful for her." Sylvia said that her whole family has pitched in with all kinds of support. "Red", her niece and member of the Callejeros, has helped organized this run in her honor. "We've been getting donations from tat-

too shops, body shops, from everywhere. Believe me, everything helps. Malo, our president, brought up the issue of my aunt's illness to the Coalition and got us the next available date. Hopefully, we can keep doing this as long as it's necessary." The run made over $1,500 that will go towards Sylvia's treatments. Sylvia expressed her gratitude with the biker community, especially her niece and the Callejeros club. "I'm grateful to Red. I know it's been alot of work by her and the club and the the participants of the ride."

Planning on a Big Ride for Autumn?

Weather 101

Fall is the season that many bikers'

enjoy. We start to see the cooler temperatures, lots of sunshine, of course, and more vivid colors due to the leaves changing. I know that many of you will be heading up to Cloudcroft and Ruidoso to witness the beauty of this new season. Some of you have asked what autumn is expected to be like here in El Paso and Las Cruces and even throughout the country as many of you are planning fall trips. Below is the 3 month forecast released by the Climate Prediction Center for October, November and December of 2012. You will notice (from the top graphic) that temperatures are ex-

pected to be above normal mainly north of us and in the Midwest. This could be good news if you want to bike in Northern New Mexico and Colorado. It looks as though southern New Mexico and west Texas will have an equal chance of seeing below normal, normal or above normal temperatures (white shaded areas). Computer model data is just having a tough time determining which way to go. Precipitation is expected to be better just south and east of El Paso and throughout north and central Texas to the deep south (mainly along the coast). We are anticipating those equal chance situations again with the computer models not really sure of our rainfall or even snow opportunities. The Pacific Northwest is projected to be below normal for rain and snow. One other note, as of late September, we are approaching 2.5" below normal rainfall so far this year. We have already recorded 5" in the rain gauge taken out at the El Paso International airport. It looks as though we are heading towards another below normal year.

Answer: A - 2nd and 3rd week of October. The colors are just exploding. The best driving routes to witness the colors would be Ski Run Road, the road up to Monjeau Lookout and the lovely winding road that takes you to Cloudcroft, Hwy 244.

More to the point, they have fostered kids in their own home. In all, the Traviesos will tell you, it's all about the kids. Agustin recalls that he and his

wife decided to foster kids that were older than the usual. They fostered a boy and a girl, both whom were 15 when their own children were about the same age. I asked them if it was difficult to take care of foster kids, especially kids who were older. "No, it's not that hard. You just gotta give them love. They saw how I treated them the same way I treated my own children. They're both now adults with their own families. The boy is 27 and he still calls me from time to time with questions or just for conversation. The hardest part was when I couldn't attend all their extracurricular activities.

Mary Lou speaks just as forthright and proud as any mom talking about her kids. "Our main mission was to put them back into life. We got to teach them responsibility and values in the short amount of time we were able to have them. The biggest joy we received was simply that we had two more kids to love, and then to see them just being normal kids. They sometimes don't even know what they want, or even how to get it. The more we can help them, either by fostering them, or by doing fundraisers like this to help out the Home,

The run was successful by raising $4000 for the home. The money, that will be used to support various programs at the home, was presented to Jim Thomas, Senior Administrator of Development and Activities, later that week. The money is always needed to keep up with the 60 plus they are currently housing.

the better they can continue their own lives." The Traviesos have met up with the Lee Moor Home before at various other charity events before deciding to host their own charity run that featured the end party at the Cockpit on Montana.

Perhaps it was best summed up by Mary Lou. We spoke about the various other activities done for the Moor Home by themselves and other clubs, and the various good deeds and all the money raised for charity by all the clubs in the Coalition. You know, I want other people in the community, not just bikers, to see that the challenge is out there. They can go out into the community too and get involved!

How to secure your bike's survival

Outside Motorcycle storage:

for many individuals whose homes do not have garages or enough internal storage space to hold their bikes. However, outside bike storage is not as easy an option as it sounds, especially for those individuals who really love their bikes and would like to keep them in pristine condition forever. Outside bike storage can be a major reason for anxiety and can substantially add to the maintenance cost of having a bike. Problems with outside bike storage: Security: A bike is a lightweight transportation. To prevent theft and vandalism, a very thorough security system has to put in place. Which is not going to be easy. Battling the cruelty of nature: Outside bike storage exposes your bike to harsh weather elements which will wreck havoc on your equipment. How to rig up the perfect outside storage:

Secure the bike as strongly as possible to a railing or a post or even to a stake specially installed for the purpose. A strong chain with an equally strong padlock should ensure that it will be a very difficult task to run off with the bike. Also, freeing such a strongly secured bike will also make such a racket, that the aspiring thief will probably give up before achieving success at his pursuits. Buy a strong waterproof cover for your bike. Make sure it is long enough to cover every inch of the bike. Sometimes it is prudent to use 2-3 covers completely wrap up the bike. Many people store their bikes in roofed porticos and feel that this absolves them from the responsibility to cover their bikes. Well, maybe they do not need the industrial-strength covering required by those literally relying on outside storage, but yes, they will be doing their bikes a favour if they place some sort of covering on it. It is a good idea to paint or lubricate chains, nuts, bolts, ball bearings and other parts which are prone to rusting. Regular cleaning of the bike also help in prolonging its life and also bring to attention parts which are rusting or on the

Don't forget to firmly secure the covering by tying it around the bike! A covering is not going to be of any use if it is dislodged or even blown away during a heavyduty thunder storm. A small, temporary shed can be rigged to house a bike. Of course, a shed needs space, which may not be available, needs to be very secure to avoid break-in and theft and needs to be absolutely weather-proof. Some people- even if they have plenty of space available- may find constructing a storage shed much more cumbersome and expensive than just using chains, padlocks, covers, paint and greasing.

History of the Shovelhead Engine

By: Christine Harrell There is no bike on the road that looks like a Harley-Davidson. Over the manufacturer's centurylong history, the look of the Harley has changed and the true enthusiast can tell the year of a bike at a glance. One of the most obvious clues is the distinctive Harley engine.

Some of these shortcomings were because it had not originally been designed as a motorcycle engine. It was supposed to be used in an outboard motor but engineers discovered that it didn't work well in humid environments, which is rather a significant drawback for a marine engine. Although the Shovelhead was not perfect, it still provided a lot of power for the new generation of bikes. The Shovelhead Era

also affected the bike's steering and could cause it to weave at top speeds.

American Motorcyclist Association launches 2012 Voter Guide

"The AMA is a non-partisan organization and doesn't make political endorsements," explained Allard. "But we do provide tools to help our members make informed choices on Election Day and offer tips for getting involved in campaigns. "The rating shows how closely the candidates' answers align with AMA positions," Allard said. "The 2012 AMA Voter Guide also features scorecards for federal incumbents seeking re-election that shows how closely their voting records and other actions match the positions held by the AMA." Voting and getting involved politically are important because the results of Election Day lay the foundation for legislation and laws, Allard added. If anti-motorcycling candidates earn elected office, then they could legislate away opportunities to ride, cut back or eliminate funding for rider safety training, or even wipe out other programs that motorcyclists have spent years working to implement. "We encourage AMA members and all riders to cast their ballots and work on political campaigns based, in part, on candidates' positions on motorcycling related issues, as well as other issues of importance to them," Allard said. To learn more about the AMA's "Vote Like a Motorcyclist" campaign and to access the AMA 2012 Voter Guide online member benefit, go to www.americanmotorcyclist.com/membership/members_o nly/voterguide.aspx

For twenty years, Harleys got their look from the Shovelhead engine, the engine that many people even today automatically associate with the bike. In the mid 1960s, Harley Davidson motorcycles used the Panhead engine, so called because of the shape of the rocker covers. As the bikes got heavier they required engines with more power than the Panhead could deliver. In 1966, Harley introduced the next evolution of this engine design. The End of the Panhead

One real improvement in Shovelhead parts was the FLH ElectraGlide Package, also known as the Police Option. Although this option made the bike harder for the amateur to maneuver, a skilled rider could get more power and speed. The End of the Shovelhead

However, the engine never became what bikers wanted it to be. Some of the reasons for this were government regulations that came out of the energy crisis of the 1970s. Harley was limited as to how much power they could give the engine.

Harley continued to improve the engine throughout its life. In the 1970s there were a number of changes made to the design of Shovelhead parts that resolved many consumer complaints about its performance.

AMA members who want to know where candidates stand on motorcycling related issues heading into Election Day should check out the 2012 AMA Voter Guide. The online tool is an exclusive benefit of AMA membership.

This new engine, like its predecessor, got its name from the shape of the rocker covers. The covers were shaped like coal shovels and these shovelhead parts inspired the Shovelhead engine's name. The Shovelhead had more powerful cylinders and pistons and was meant to provide stronger acceleration to meet the demands of bikers of the day. The engine had its drawbacks. It was more powerful but also heavier so didn't give as much power as had been hoped. That weight

Harley stopped producing the engine in 1984, although manufacturers still make custom engines in the same style. The Shovelhead was replaced by the Evolution engine that Harleys still use today.

Despite Harley's efforts, this engine struggled to keep pace with the innovations that were sweeping the industry. Shovelhead parts such as oil management systems were considered archaic when compared to other engines and the machine fell out of favor.

"The 2012 AMA Voter Guide gives AMA members important information about political candidates," said Wayne Allard, a former U.S. representative and U.S. senator from Colorado who now serves as the AMA vice president for government relations. "The guide includes a rating for every federal candidate of the major political parties who returned an AMA questionnaire. Very soon we'll be adding the gubernatorial and presidential candidates as well." The AMA 2012 Voter Guide is part of the AMA "Vote Like A Motorcyclist" campaign to help members decide how to cast their ballots in the upcoming elections.

Motorcycle-only checkpoints, restricted recreational access to public lands and health insurance discrimination against motorcyclists are just some of the issues used to rate federal congressional (and soon, state gubernatorial and presidential candidates) in the 2012 AMA Voter Guide.
