-Prime Minister of Canada 1911-1920 -His government used propaganda to keep Canadians patriotic -His government passed the Military Service Act in July 1917 (introduced conscription) -Believed Canada had to send reinforcements (at Britains request) to become Britains equal -Introduced Military Voters Act (all members of military given the vote) -Introduced Wartime Elections Act (close women relatives of men serving in Armed Forces could vote) -Extended suffrage to most Canadian Women in 1918 -At Paris Peace Conference in 1919, argued that Canada earned right to sit independently at peace table because of wartime record

Historical Significance
-Propaganda used by his government encouraged many to enlist and buy bonds which was huge help to war effort (helped Canada stay in the war) -Conscription from Military Service Act caused many to enlist (helped Canada stay in the war) -Beliefs of Canada becoming equal to Britain lead his government to encourage citizens to enlist (helped Canada enter war) -Military members given the vote would likely vote for Borden; anyone who didnt vote from military would have their votes made by members of Bordens government (kept Borden in PM position) -Wartime Elections Act and suffrage to may women was great way to make women feel INDEPENDENT (helped lead to women independence today such as workplace, politics, etc.) -Argument at Paris Peace Conference lead to INDEPENDENCE for Canada as a COUNTRY, not just a colony of Britain -Major contributor to Allied success in the skies -Legendary status encouraged men to enlist in Royal Flying Corps (increased pilots for Allies, contributed to Allied success) -Young age encouraged younger men to enlist, increased independence for younger men -Promoted pride throughout Canadian citizens (independence because Canada had done something Britain couldnt) -By supplying the Canadian troops with faulty equipment their effectiveness in battle would have been greatly suppressed; may have lead to prolonged war efforts -Since Hughes gave contract to Ross, Canadian troops would have had terrible rifles to use under their conditions- gas attack on Allied trenches in Ypes where Canadian troops stood their ground even though their weapons were faulty which made Allies exceptionally impressed with them was caused by this; RESPECT earned for Canadian troops -Association with Shell Committee leading to Munitions scandal would make the Canadian Government learn a lesson as to who they appoint as Minister of Militia and Defence; loss of government money lead to more bonds needing to be sold, more rationing, more war effort in the home front -The disaster lead to improved marine law in

-RFC fighter pilot -One of the top flying aces of the war -Top Allied flying ace at age of 24 -Said to have shot down 72 enemy planes -Awarded Victoria Cross (Britains highest military honour for bravery) in 1917 after single-handedly destroying 7 German planes at dawn on June 2nd -Awarded Distinguished Flying Cross for destroying twenty-five enemy machines in twelve days -Member of Robert Bordens government; Minister of Militia and Defence (responsible for mobilization of Canadas volunteer army during the war -Caused Munitions Scandal: associated with Shell Committee whose members found a way to profit from $170 million in government contracts to make artillery shells -Good friend of Ross, creator of Ross rifles; gave Ross contract for Canadian army -Criticized for supplying Canadian troops with leaky boots and unreliable Ross rifles
