a.k.a Skookum 1) Snookum is a child. About 11 years old 2) Candy tells Snookum to run and tell Rufe, Reverence Jameson, and Corrine to go to Mathu's house. She also tells him to go to the main house and tell Janey to telephone Lou and Miss Merle, and to return right after. 3) Skookum sees Beau dead in the yard. Janice Robinson, a.k.a Janey 1) Janey panicks, she doesnt know what to do. She calls on Jesus multiple times, because she doesnt know what to do. 2) The mayor is drunk when she receives the news. 3) Janeys job is to serve in the Marshall house. She is a servant. Myrtle Bouchard a.k.a Miss Merle 1) Each chapter is about a specific person, different every time. Each of the characters perspective and opinion about the murder is revealed. 2) Miss Merle raised Candy. 3) Candy says to Miss Merle that she wants Miss Merle to help her get more guns, more specifically, twelve-gauge shotguns. She also wants Miss Merle to help her get more people here. 4) Miss Merle grabbed Janeys collar and slapped her a few times. She threatened her that shed slap her some more if Janey didnt do what she said. 5) Clatoo dislikes Fix because Fixs brother, Forest Boutan, tried to rape one of Clatoos sisters.

Robert Louis Stevenson Banks a.k.a Chimley

1) Their fishing spots are limited to one spot because white men bought the river, and the black men are only allowed to fish at one spot. 2) The thought of a black man killing a white man brings fear to both Chimley and Mat. 3) They suspect that Mathu murdered Beau, because Mathu is the toughest black man, and also gets into fights. Matthew Lincoln Brown, a.k.a Mat 1) Mat tells his wife that they are going hunting. 2) Ella is persistent to know what they are hunting, so she repeatedly asks Mat what they are really doing. 3) Mat says to Ella that this is mens business. When Mat finally tells her what he was going to do, he admits that we all gone crazy. 4) Ellas face turns into hate because she is so scared from seeing Mat crying and scolding her. 5) It makes Mat feel good that Chimley and Cherry and the rest of them were doing something different for the first time. Grant Bello a.k.a Cherry 1) Clatoo thought it would look better if they all came at the same time, rather than straggling in one or two at a time. 2) Dirty Red makes fun of Billy Washington because Billy had missed a shot to a bunny, and got away. 3) The first truckload of men including Dirty Red, Cherry, Chimley, and Billy were all dragging around their guns and looking for something to shoot.

4) They are concerned because the white folks that are settling there are getting rid of all the old graveyards.

5) Coot fought in World War I.

Cyrill Robillard a.k.a Clatoo 1) Mathu bragged about not having white mans blood. He is a man that is prideful of his race. He looks down on people with white mans blood and does not look down on people that do not. Mathu also looks down on lighter blacks, for he has not been tainted by white mans blood. 2) When the old men gather at Mathus house, Mathu claims responsibility for the crime. However, Johnny Paul, Rufe, and Mat all follow up in trying to take the blame for killing Beau. Eventually everyone claimed that they shot Beau. 3) Mathu says to them that when the sheriff arrives, he will turn himself in. Louis Alfred Dimoulin a.k.a Lou Dimes 1) Lou immediately ruled out charlie because there was no chance that he couldve been the killer. Beau always talked to him as if he was a dog and Charlie would never talk or raise his head. 2) Lou was scared to death when he saw a wall of armed black men. He thought he saw about fifteen or eighteen men. 3) Candy told Lou that Charlie and Beau had gotten into a fight back there in the fields, and Beau came after Charlie with a shotgun, and Candy took Mathus gun and shot him. Candy was protecting Mathu. 4) When Billy confesses that he killed Beau, Mapes slaps him across the face. Mapes asks again, and Billy responds the same way, and gets slapped again. Gable also tries to confess, but he gets severely slapped as well.
5) No, it doesnt work. They are persistent in saying that they murdered Beau. 6) Maples doesnt arrest Mathu because he doesnt have decisive proof that it was him.

7) According to Uncle Billy, Fix and them beat Billys son, so he shot Beau.

Joseph Seaberry a.k.a Rufe 1) Mapes thought of Mathu as a real man. He had much respect for him. 2) Clatoo says that being the last person in trouble was always his trouble. His trouble was not being in trouble with the law. 3) Johnny Paul means that Mapes has no idea what it feels like to be discriminated as a black man. 4) Griffin says that he wouldnt let black people talk to him like that, and that he wouldve arrested the old coon and shot the first who tried to rescue him. 5) Stalks of cane are grown on the plantation. 6) Tucker, Yank, Gable, and Coot are showing Mapes what they have gone through. They are telling Mapes how they suffered. 7) Mapes is referring to the trouble that will arise later in the story. He thinks there will be much more things to worry about. Thomas Vincent Sullivan a.k.a Sully or T.V. 1) Sully is upset with Gil the way he treated Cal like he hated him. 2) Gil was Salt, and Cal was Pepper. They were called that because they worked together and that Gil was white and Cal was black. 3) Sully has heard that Fix and his boys used to ride back in the old days. Lou Dimes 1) Lou notices that people were leaving the front yard to go to the back one at a time, for an unknown reason. each one would stay for 4-5 minutes and nod. 2) Miss Merle brings ham and cheese sandwiches, then everyone eats them hungrily. Sully 1) The Cajuns were people of French descent that spoke both French and English. 2) Russell, the sheriffs deputy, is at Fixs house to keep him at his house. 3) When Gil arrives, there is many people at the house. He greets them, and they greet him back. He makes his way to Fix, and two women are crying, with others that are trying to comfort them.

4) Fix wants to go to Marshall and take his revenge. However, he said that he wont go unless all his sons agree to do so. Luke Will and his gang, Claude, and Alfonze sides with Fix. Jean, Russell, A-goose, and Gils brother all side with Gil. 5) Gil leaves the house because his father ordered him and Jean out. He doesnt to see them ever again. 6) Russ urges Gil to play in the next days football game it will help influence Beaus son. Russ thinks that helping influence Beaus son and accomplishing your dreams is something better than trying to gain back his fathers love and revenge. Jacques Thibeaux a.k.a Tee Jack 1) Tee Jack is the person running the bar. 2) After Beau is killed, Jack Marshall drinks his family history away. 3) Jack, Candy, and Bea Marshall all own the Marshall Plantation. 4) Jack stares at the door that black people used to sing in. 5) Tee Jack has a bad attitude towards black people by shoving drinks rudely and spilling them deliberately. 6) The teacher from Texas disagrees with Luke Wilsons ideas. He thinks that they should let the law handle things. 7) Tee Jack is afraid of Luke Will and his crew because he knows that if he gets on their bad side then they will make his life feel terrible. Albert Jackson a.k.a Rooster 1) The men would load their guns when they go to the toilet. There was shells in a shoe box and it was kept a secret.

2) Candys role changed in this chapter because she was helpless and not in control. When Mathu talked to her, he talked to her as if she was a little girl again, and Candy softened up. She also becomes frustrated when she is not invited to the talk with Mathu. 3) Clatoo says that there isnt going to be a fight because Fix, who they are waiting to fight, isnt going to show up at Bayonne. Theyre all ready to fight him but hes not coming.

4) Rooster rejects Clatoos reasoning because Rooster is the one who wanted to fight Fix, Rooster respects Mathu, and he wants to fight with him, and die with him, however Clatoo wants everyone to go back home. 5) Mathu wasnt very fond of some of the old men there, but when they all took a stand to protect him, Mathu has new found respect for them for protecting him. Mathu is changed by them. Lou Dimes 1) Mathu isnt the one who killed Beau, it was Charlie. 2) Charlie felt like a man because he defended himself instead of running away. He stood up to Beau. Sidney Brooks, a.k.a Coot/Snookum and Horace Thompson a.k.a Sharp 1) Luke Will comes to avenge Beau. 2) Both Leroy and Mapes got shot, but they survived. 3) Lou is put in charge because Mapes deputy refuses to help him, and Mapes is unable to move due to the injury to his arm. Since Lou is the only one there with Mapes, hes put in charge. Antoine Sharp a.k.a Dirty Red 1) Luke Will and Charlie are killed. 2) The members of the Black community touch Charlie because they are mourning for his death, and they also want to be brave and courageous like him. Lou Dimes 1) The court laughs at Mapes because he admitted that he was sitting around the entire shootout due to Luke Will shooting him in the arm. 2) They were put on probation for the next five years, or until their deaths.They could not hold any kind of firearm or be as near as ten feet of any person holding those kind of firearms. 3) Candy is no longer protecting Mathu, she let him go with Clatoo and the others.
