BSC3i Switching Units (SWUs)

S witching unit is the generic name for the 10/100/1000Base LAN switch plug-in unit The S WU aggregates traffic from multiple signaling and control units, as well as from O &M unit, to the fewer E thernet links towards the sites Multilayer switch. In the BS C 3i 660 the S WU is E S B20-A or E S B26. In BS C 3i 1000/2000 the S WU is E S B26. E S Bs are O E M units from BATM Advanced C ommunication Ltd E S B20-A is a 20-port10/100BaseT/Tx (UTP copper cable) E thernet LAN switch plug-in unit. E S B26 is a 22-port10/100BaseT/Tx + 2-port 1000BaseT (UTP copper cable) + 2-port 1000BaseS X (optical multimode cable) E thernet LAN switch plug-in unit Half and F ull Duplex on all ports C omplies with IE E E 802.1d S panning Tree protocol C omplies with IE E E 802.1w R apid S panning Tree protocol (recommended in S 11.5) C omplies with IE E E 802.1s Multiple S panning Tree protocol (recommended in S 12) VLAN per 802.1q Port Trunking managed via BiNO S C ommand Language Interface (C LI) commands F or further information see E S B20-A and E S B26 User G uides

L2/L3 switch example: Cisco Catalyst 3750 series

C isco S tackWise technology, stacks up to nine units Depending on series model one unit has 24 or 48 10/100/1000 ports There is several different NE s connected to the same L2/L3 switc hes
E .g. VLANs and MS TP require site level planning and configuration

There may be compatibility problems between the BS C integrated S WUs and the S ite S witches/R outers
E .g first fully MS TP-compatible C isco IO S for 3750 switches is 12.2(25)S E C

Duplex Speed settings

Duplex S peed means the mode of the E thernet link: 10/100/1000 Mbps, F ull or Half Duplex. Auto-Negotiation (specified in IE E E 802.3) provides a linked device with the capability to detect the abilities (modes of operation) supported by the device at the other end of the link, determine common abilities, and configure for joint operation. User can configure Duplex S peed of the E thernet Links of C PUs with E thernet Interface Handling MML (O E HAND, command group QH), default is AutoNegotiation. All PC U ifeth:s are fixed to Auto-Negotiation. PC U-B and PC U2-D ifeth:s shall be used in Half Duplex mode. The two logical PC Us of the same plug-in unit share the same physical E thernet Links.

LDI protocols
SNMP manager TFTP server UDP IPv4 Limited DHC P server provides configuration to the S WUs during S WU start-up. S WU gets its IP address, netmask, default gateway IP address and supervising unit (MC MU) IP address. DHC P service is available only in BS C 3i:s. S ystem identifies the S WUs based on the address coding modules (ADDMO D or C AB_ ID/C AR _ ID). The external C IS 3550/3750 of BS C i/2i can not be identified. NOTE : if DHC P is used there shall not be another DHC P server than the BS C s own MC MU connected to the LAN). S NMP protocol is used in setting S WU configuration, receiving alarms (traps) from the S WUs, locating S WU faults and getting measurement information from the S WUs. TF TP server is used for downloading the new software image and configuration command files to the S WU. User can open a Telnet session to the S WUs C LI via MML interface. The S WU C LI is password protected. To be able to connect to the S WU via MML (MML command Z W6T) the user has to first define the S WU passwords to the BS C (MML command Z W6M) .

SWU supervision handling and SW administration

With LAN HW S upervision Handling MML (UNE LMA, command group YF) the user can handle internal LAN supervision related parameters, upgrade S WU S W, download and upload S WU configuration files and do S NMP operations. Names of the E S B BiNO S S W modules in O MU disks LF ILE S directory are:
E S B20AG X .BIN for E S B20-A E S B260G X .BIN for E S B26 (same module is used also in E MB S WUs)

User can manage E S B S W with ZYFM MML command, possible actions are:
IS W ... INQ UIR E S O F TWAR E V E R S IO N O F LAN S WITC H US L ... UPDATE S Y S LO ADE R TO LAN S WITC H (only for E S B26 in current E S B S W versions) US W... UPDATE S O F TWAR E TO LAN S WITC H

User can also load E S B S W from BS C via MC MU with C LI commands

SWU configuration
User can set up and configure the S WUs with the MML command YFM (Manage LAN switch) and with C LI commands from the BiNO S C ommand Language Interface (C LI). C onfiguration steps
E S B20-A and E S B26 have factory default settings (see user guides) Default S WU configuration command files (PO C C abxx.IMG ) are included in the BS C s S W package. PO C C abxx files are common for all Network E lements using the E S Bs.
a is S WU type (5 = E S B20-A, 6 = C IS 3550, 7 = E S B26), b is number of the topology this S WU belongs to, xx is index of the S WU in the topology (always Z Z i.e. not used yet).

User configures S WUs basic IP parameters (LAMANA MML, WY). S WU gets them from MC MU via DHC P or user sets them manually via C LI. During BS C commissioning/integration user uploads the default configuration command files from O MU disks to the S WUs with MML (YFM:UC F :S WU,0:;). User completes the site specific S WU configuration with S WU C LI (either with MML (W6T:S WU,0;) or via C LI). User downloads the upgraded S WU configuration command files from S WU into the O MU disks with MML command (YFM:DC F :S WU,0:;). S ystem saves the active configuration command files to O MU disks with names TG Y C abxx.IMG . If user changes and downloads the S WU configuration again, system saves also the previous active configuration into O MU disks with name TG Y C abxx.BAK . copy running-config download-from <ip-address> <config file>, write memory

User interface for the looking at the active alarms and alarm history is Alarm History Handling MML (AHIHAN, command group AH). C NW S tate management offers means to separate E thernet interfaces and ports, S WUs or LANs from active E thernet traffic. C ontrolled re-routing of E thernet traffic is needed during LAN device maintenance. User interface for C NW state management is Working S tate and R estart Handling MML (R C VHAN, command group US ). R ecovery does not change the C NW and S WU states automatically.

User interface for C NW fault location is Diagnostics Handling MML (DG NHAN, command group UD). R ecovery does not start C NW and S WU diagnostics automatically. R ecovery can start E MB diagnostics after the E MB has been found faulty. In addition to diagnostics the system keeps LAN hardware supervision logs that help locating problems in the C NW. Log events can be seen with LAN HW S upervision Handling MML (UNE LMA, command group YF). The LAN S tatistics provides load, profile and availability information from C NW and E MB. User manages the LAN statistics with Measurement Handling MML (S HG HAN, command group T2). In addition the user can start short time measurements with LAN HW S upervision Handling MML (UNE LMA, command group YF). The measurement reports can be seen via logical files (I/O S ystem Administration command groups IW, II, IB).

Interface redundancy may be used to backup IP address assigned for E thernet or V LAN interfaces inside the same computer unit. In a case physical link fails, a C arrier S ense IP address is quickly moved to the back-up interface and a gratuitous AR P is broadcasted to advertise the MAC address of the new active interface. S tatus changes at the physical link are detected by device interrupt and the redundant IP address switchover is therefore nearly transparent action for IP user applications; meaning redundant IP addressing switchover has no effect on established TC P/IP connections.
M92 mechanism based plug-in variants PC U, PC U-S and PC U-T are not able to generate HW interrupt from link status changes and are therefore using HW polling at 200 ms interval by the E thernet driver.

The user may prioritize interfaces of the computer unit in a way that unit favors always the same physical network interface when both interfaces are functionally stabile.

Logical IP addressing based redundancy model may be used to hide internal failover actions and remain serving IP address as the same for the remote peerend application over the local unit switchover. VLAN benefits
Workstations can be grouped logically or functionally, regardless of their physical location on the network. E xtra security
Devices within each VLAN can only communicate directly with devices in the same VLAN. C ommunication between devices in different VLANs must pass through a routing device or Layer 3 switch.

C ontrol of broadcast traffic

With traditional networks, congestion can be caused by broadcast traffic that is directed to all network devices whether they require it or not. VLANs increase the efficiency of network because each VLAN can be set up to contain only those devices that need to communicate with each other.

It eases the change and movement of devices on IP networks

With traditional IP networks, network administrators spend much of their time dealing with moves and changes. Y ou can change VLAN memberships anytime by software configuration without moving the workstations physically, or change group memberships by simply moving a cable from one port to another.

VLAN trunking
A trunk is a point-to-point link between one or more E thernet switch interfaces and another networking device such as a router or a switch. Trunks carry the traffic of multiple VLANs over a single link. A trunk saves ports: traffic on some VLANs may not need a dedicated link, and so a trunk will bundle virtual links over one physical link. A trunk can be configured on a single E thernet interface or on an E therC hannel bundle.

IP addressing principles
Logical addresses are recommended to be used in both C PUs and PC Us Physical addresses can be used in O MU (not duplicated) and in PC U with G b over IP dynamic configuration. S igtran with multihoming needs one logical address for E L0 and another for E L1 from two different subnets and two different VLANs. LDI requires two subnets:
addresses for MC MU E L0 and even numbered S WUs Addresses for MC MU E L1 and odd numbered S WUs.

E MB requires two subnets:

addresses for MC MU E MB0 and S WU-60 Addresses for MC MU E MB1 and S WU-61.

E ach VLAN forms at least one subnet. S ame VLAN can have several subnets.
in LDI connections the two subnets belong to the same V LAN.

S tatic routes are used between the C PU/PC U host ports and the site edge routers.
