T

he rush and panic of

back to school is just
starting to calm down.
Our children are getting more
comfortable with the routine
early to bed and early to rise.
Parents may now remember the
timing of the bus stops and after
school activities. As this excite-
ment begins to ease up, the pres-
sure is on for students to strive for
good grades, impress their parents
and teachers, and get into a good
college. As sports pick up, so does
homework, consequently creat-
ing a very stressful lifestyles for
students, parents and teachers
alike.
The school year is only a few
weeks in, but the timing is perfect
to start your student on the right
foot toward a successful and pow-
erful new school year. We hear
about tutoring day in and day
out, from friends to television to
news ads (see page 14 for our ad).
But what are the true benefits
and reasons to sign up for tutor-
ing? Tutoring is designed to cover
what a student is learning in
school and all of the additional
pieces that schools may leave out.
Tutoring is an addition to school-
work, with all the advantages to
help strengthen a student in mul-
tiple aspects therefore fulfill-
ing all necessities to achieve a
successful education and create a
fruitful life.
Tutoring provides individualized
one-to-one instruction
Class sizes have been steadi-
ly increasing each year on
average now, 25 to 30 students
per class. Teachers have their
rooms filled to the brim with
more and more students, only
making their jobs more difficult.
Children learn best when they
have the full attention of their
teacher. But with so many kids
and not enough time, in-school
personalized instruction becomes
almost impossible. With one-to-
one tutoring, tutors are able to
put 100 percent of their efforts
into your childs personal specific
needs. Being with a sole teacher,
together the student and the
tutor build a relationship of trust,
making learning and retention
attainable and enjoyable.
Tutoring builds confidence
inside and outside the classroom
With one-to-one tutoring,
students are able to build strong
and trusting relationships with
their tutors. Tutoring allows stu-
dents to ask questions and for
their voices to be heard. In large
classes, students are commonly
afraid to speak their comments or
verbally interact with their peers.
Tutoring builds a students confi-
dence through personal and
interactive instruction, guidance
and support. Once confidence is
built within a one-to-one setting,
then breaking that fear of vocaliz-
ing opinions or answering ques-
tions in large groups disappears.
Tutoring transforms time into
productivity
Between school, sports,
homework and family time,
almost every minute of a childs

we need a tutor already? By Chelsie Charnet

B
ut, it can print a lot of it
though! Most people
havent given much
thought to the fact that every
dollar the Federal Government
gives out, it has to take from
someone else (or create out of
thin air). For every dollar of
benefit paid out to an individ-
ual, another individual had to
lose a dollar of income or bene-
fit for themselves and their
family. Like a giant conduit or
vortex, the larger Government
becomes, with its inefficiencies,
pork, political special deals,
lack of oversight and perceived
unlimited budget, our govern-
ment is sucking the wealth out
of hardworking, and success
minded goal-oriented small
business-building people that
employ other people who des-
perately need quality high pay-
ing jobs.
Some lawmakers and
their constituents believe that
rich people can afford to pay
more, so propose and endorse
laws to tax them more.
Politicians fail to take into
account that people, who earn
more, live larger. Their lifestyle
is larger, their home is larger
and they also employ others to
maintain that lifestyle like gar-
deners, handymen, massage
therapists, travel agents, per-
sonal assistants, domestic
attendants, auto detailers,
cleaning and maintenance
crews, a nanny and if even
wealthier, a captain and crew
for their boat and or airplane.
The excess these people earn
isnt just sitting in a bank avail-
able to be taxed. As their
lifestyle increases so does their
payroll! Think about this for a
moment, how many people do
you know that have a lifestyle
employing the people men-
tioned above? Probably not
too many and that is my point.
Taxing these people to oblivion
will only put more people out
of work as they will curtail their
lifestyle if forced to pay addi-
tional taxes. Besides, the taxes
collected on this small group of
tax payers would amount to
nothing, with no impact, when
compared to the insatiable
appetite of Government, both
Federal and State. Further,
studies have been conducted
that show when taxes are
increased on the rich, the rich
pay less in tax. Why, because
they can move to another state,
defer income, shift income to
others, give it away, earn less by
accumulating retained earnings
through their businesses, hide
it in inventory purchases,
restrict or limit growth of their
companies or personal assets
and other more sophisticated
methods. Massive taxation on
a minimum amount of people is
fruitless.
To tax the upper middle
class excessively is also ridicu-
lous. They are the biggest
spenders in the nation influ-
encing the economy in a major
way. Expensive homes, cars,
furniture, decorating, clothing,
trips, tuition, charitable dona-
tions to benefit the neighbor-
hood and the entire world
community, electronics and
technology for the home and
much more; when over taxed,
these people shut their wallets
and purses tight. The remain-
ing groups of tax payers are the
vast middle class, the lower
income middle class and the
working class, who earn mini-
mum wage and slightly more.
These tax payers make up the
bulk of the income taxes paid
and also derive the greatest
benefits from government. A
fair tax must be implemented as
not to stymie ones ambitions
to earn and pay more tax on a
greater sum, as opposed to a
greater tax on the same or less-
er sum. At the same time
Congress must tax the largest
base fairly, where the Federal
and State governments com-
bined, cannot take over 30% of
annual income after the cost of
housing and basic necessities.
It is my opinion that there is
only one way to do this fairly,
honestly, accurately and com-
pletely: a national consump-
tion or sales tax on everything
other than food, clothing, shel-
ter and education. In this way
taxes are voluntary; if you dont
need it to live, you dont have
to buy it and therefore have no
tax to pay. Everything else is a
luxury and must be taxed.
Since a sales tax solution in
lieu of income tax isnt around
the corner or on the drawing
board, other controllable
action is necessary on your part,
otherwise you might pay more
than is necessary to the tax-
man.
Without being too cynical
and considering that total
Federal obligations now exceed
$222 trillion, from their per-
spective the perfect 2013 IRS
1040 income tax return would
only have two lines. First,

D
r. Brusco speaks regu-
larly to schools,
organizations, groups
and patients on a variety of
subjects geared to their
needs. Recently he spoke to
the West Milford Senior
Group about preventative
dentistry for the aging popu-
lation.
Preventative dentistry is
important for all age groups.
You can reduce the risks of
tooth loss, cavities and den-
tal infections by having rou-
tine cleanings, x-rays and
examinations. At these den-
tal visits the dental hygien-
ists or doctor will educate
you on areas of concern, new
treatments available to you,
review medical histories, per-
form oral cancer screenings,
as well as instructions for at
home oral care. At this
speaking engagement for the
seniors, Dr. Brusco addressed
their dental concerns.
The United States is
approaching the highest pop-
ulation of Senior Citizens
ever. This group has the
highest rate of longevity and
natural tooth retention. As a
dentist, the concern for good
oral health and protection of
normal function is of the
utmost importance. Here are
a few issues to be aware of:
Gum recession. Some
recession is a consequence of
a healthy tooth as it ages.
This pulling away of the gum
from the tooth exposes the
root of the tooth that is soft
and porous, leaving it unpro-
tected by the gum. It can
become more sensitive to
cold and heat, and is more
prone to developing cavities.
This can also cause the teeth
to be mobile (looser) than in
the past. There are many
ways to care for this condi-
tion and we would be happy
to discuss them with each
individual patient as treat-
ments vary according to
needs.
Teeth, gums, and our
jawbone were meant to last a
lifetime. Our diet can dam-
age our strong teeth and
bones. Cavities can wreak
havoc on our mouths.
Irreversible damage can be
done by tooth loss, neglect
and ill fitting dental restora-
tions or improperly fitting
dentures. This damage will
affect our bite, chewing capa-
bility, function, speech and
esthetics. There are remedies
for some of these problems,
but there is nothing better
than your own healthy teeth.
Hereditary factors, medical
conditions and the medica-
tions taken for them, includ-
ing cancer and cancer thera-
py may affect your ability to
care for your teeth properly.
These things are out of your
control and that is why sen-
ior and geriatric dentistry is
so important. Doctors and
hygienists can make sure
your teeth are cleaned and
cavity free and then can
show you some alternate
ways to make sure they stay
that way.
Dentures and /or partial
dentures are good ways to
restore compromised dental
health. They are designed to
function best from 7-10 years
from their insertion date.
They need to be adjusted
properly from the start, so 7-
10 adjustment visits would
not be considered unusual.
The dentures and your oral
tissue need to be checked on
a regular basis for issues that
can cause loss of function,
bone support, tissue support
and damage to the temporo-
mandibular joint if left unat-
tended.
Our quality and extend-
ed life expectations have
been increase incredibly by
advances in medicine.
However some medications
leave us with unwanted side
effects. Some medications
taken for osteoporosis, high
blood pressure, strokes, heart
attacks, diabetes, and organ
transplants are being linked
to oral concerns. The effects
of many of these drugs can
affect the mouth with bone
loss, dry mouth, muscle prob-
lems and a host of others.
These wonder drugs we use
to extend our lives can
adversely affect our oral
health, so be sure to discuss
any and all medications you
are on with your dentist.

ments in dentistry for over 2

cessful as a tooth, teeth, or
anchor replacement which
have saved a patients health
as well as improved the qual-
ity of life. This was a concern
with the seniors, as they felt
that dentists were pushing
this treatment. Implants
have gone from revolution-
ary wonders to a predictable
and streamlined dental pro-
cedure. The dental profes-
sion, including Dr. B, is
thrilled with the ways we can
help patients using dental
implants. It is important to
remember that not everyone
is a good candidate for
implants. You must have
enough bone to support one
and certain lifestyle changes,
such as smoking, will deter-
mine whether the procedure
will be a success. Many med-
ications can interfere with a
successful result. This can be
discussed at your visit.
Dental insurance can
help defray some of the costs
of dental care. This type of
insurance is very different
from regular health insur-
ance, with yearly deductibles,
yearly maximum benefits,
certain percentages paid for
different procedures and
many exclusions for proce-
dures. There are scrutinous
dental insurance reviewers
who have never seen the
patients mouth yet deny
payment. The dental insur-
ance industry has not
changed maximums or exclu-
sions since the 1970s. Prices
on premiums have gone up,
but benefits have remained
the same. The costs of mate-
rials used in dentistry have
quadrupled in the past few
years. Medicare and
Medicaid are woefully under-
funded to help reduce the
cost of dentistry to seniors.
Yet the cost of everything has
increased! We do work with
2 third party financing com-
panies to help make financial
arrangements that can be
budget friendly.
Whether we are in our
golden years, approaching
them in the not so distant
future, young and older alike
needs to consider their den-
tal health and make it a pri-
ority. It begins when that
first tooth comes in and con-
tinues through the rest of our
lives. At any age the old
adage an ounce of preven-
tion is worth a pound of
cure is one that shows great
wisdom.

read, Send it in!
The Federal Government
during the Clinton years,
opened the gates of home own-
ership by allowing the people
who couldnt qualify for a loan,
to be able to get funding even
though there was absolutely no
way they could ever pay it
back. Multiply this by millions
of borrowers and billions of dol-
lars and you have the architec-
ture of a massive banking fail-
ure! Now, the people who
couldnt afford their homes
cant afford to buy a car either,
so the current President pushed
through a federal cash for
clunkers purchase program
with a tax-payer cost of $750
Billion more!
What good was accom-
plished and how was the econ-
omy helped by these decisions?
Ill tell you what it did do; it
rewarded bad behavior on the
part of the unqualified purchas-
er, punished the people who
paid their mortgages on time as
they got no reward, bonus or
incentive for doing the right
thing and finally, it saddled the
taxpayer and all future taxpay-
ers, those not even born yet,
with a debt load so inconceiv-
able, that tax rates in the future
will have to be so high as to be
a disincentive to work your tail
off to make it in the world.
This sends a message that hav-
ing a menial job with low pay
or no job at all ensures entitle-
ments of low income housing,
food stamps, free health insur-
ance, subsidized home and car
purchases, and subsidized social
services including free college
tuition.
Do you want to see the
two greatest examples of a gov-
ernment run business, look no
further than the US Postal
Service and Amtrak? I do not
believe either of them has ever
made a profit.
Not far down the tax road
will be a baby tax for those who
the government deems can
afford it. Earn too much that
year and you will owe taxes for
any child born or adopted into
your family to pay for the peo-
ple who have babies with no
insurance and no means to sup-
port their babies. I am not
being facetious when I tell you
that there will be a bay tax, its
just a matter of time. Dont
agree? Look at the reverse, a
departure tax, for those with
assets. Call it whatever you
like, whether a capital gains tax
at death or an estate tax,
income tax or inheritance tax,
it is still a death tax and we
now have in place, all 4 of
them!
So we pay tax when we
earn money, again when we
save some money the earnings
are taxable, when we spend
money we are confronted with
a state sales tax, when we give
large gifts we have to report
them and pay tax as the giver of
the gift and lastly, when we die
we are taxed again. The only
thing left is to tax those items
or services that are not current-
ly subject to tax now. One
recently enacted tax is called a
real estate transfer tax of 1%.
Did you also know that labor is
now subject to sales tax in NJ?
A plumbers work or a land-
scapers labor is all taxed.
Certain doctors must now
charge sales tax for their servic-
es like plastic surgeons for cos-
metic facial procedures.
Luxury taxes were instituted a
few years ago on automobiles
priced over a certain amount.
Watch out people, food at the
grocery store will be next.
When I was a cashier at a gro-
cery store 34 years ago, I was
told to ask the shopper which
aisle they picked up the can of
chocolate. If the item was from
the ice cream toppings aisle it
was taxed. If it came from the
baking aisle it was not. Today
the barcode tells the scanner
automatically, to tax or not to
tax, that is the question. Soon,
there may be no questions to
ask as everything will be taxed.
It is my belief that
Congress is already planning to

The Musicales at Noon
concert series at St. Timothy
Lutheran Church in Wayne
continues Wednesday, October
17, with a recital by The

Downs Syndrome, is a
Musicales favorite! Their var-

classical, popular, Broadway,
Disney, and patriotic tunes.
The 60-minute concert begins
at 12 Noon. The public is cor-
dially invited. No admission is
charged, but a free-will offering
will be accepted. The church
has an indoor elevator for easy
wheelchair access. This project

With any argument there
are at least two sides and this
one is no different. Readers are
either on the receiving line of
Governmental compensation

are forced to pay more in tax so
others may receive I propose
the following strategies. Defer
income from taxation by
maximizing your currently
deductible retirement plan
contributions and investing
after tax funds into tax-deferred
and tax-free vehicles. If you
have a monthly surplus that
you currently deposit in a bank
or credit union, youll need to
learn more about non-qualified
deferred compensation plans
that grow on a tax-deferred
basis and are accessible on a
tax-free basis. Already retired

T
he term polydipsia
refers to excessive
thirst. We see this as
an increase in the amount of
water being drunk, which, in
turn, usually leads to polyuria,
which means your cat is uri-
nating more often and at a
larger volume.
These changes may be
very subtle and slowly progres-
sive, or quite obvious. You may
observe an increase in the
amount of wet litter in a cats
litter box or even accidents
outside the litter box. Some
cats may begin drinking from a
dripping faucet in the sink or
from an open toilet bowl.
However, if you want to deter-
mine exactly how much your
cat is drinking, allow him only
one source of water and sub-
tract the amount left in the
bowl after 24 hours from the
amount you put in originally.
On average, a 10-pounds cat
takes in about 2.5 cups per day.
This includes any water that is
taken in from other sources,
such as canned food.
If you determine that
your pet is drinking excessive-
ly or just think its more than
usual, make an appointment
with your veterinarian because
polyuria and polydipsia (drink-
ing and urinating more) can
be an early sign of a serious dis-
ease. These can include: kid-
ney failure, diabetes mellitus,
hyperthyroidism (overactive
thyroid), liver disease, elec-
trolyte abnormalities, pyome-
tra (uterine infection), other
less common endocrine disor-
ders, and diabetes insipidus.
Several diagnostic tests
may be needed to determine
the cause of your cats polyuria
and polydipsia because many
different diseases can cause
these signs. Any visit to your
vet should begin with a com-
plete medical history and thor-
ough physical examination.
Initial testing may include
measurement of water intake
at home, complete blood
count (CBC), blood chemistry
tests (including electrolytes),
urinalysis, urine culture and
sensitivity, thyroid hormone
(T4) concentration, and
abdominal X-rays or ultra-
sound.
In older cats, the three
most common disease condi-
tions seen in practice that
cause polyuria and polydipsia
are kidney failure, diabetes
mellitus, and hyperthyroidism.
Diabetes mellitus diag-
nosis is based on high blood
glucose concentration and the
presence of glucose, and often
incompletely broken down fat
products called ketones in the
urine. This disease is very
treatable in the long term.
Initial treatment depends on
the severity and may include
hospitalization with intensive
fluid and electrolyte therapy in
conjunction with administra-
tion of short-acting insulin, or
outpatient management with
long-acting insulin.
Kidney failures diagnosis
is based on serum biochemistry
tests and urinalysis. Treatment
is based on rehydrating the
cat, trying to slow the progres-
sion of the kidney disease by
dietary modification and treat-
ing complications such as
hypertension, nausea,
and urinary tract infec-
tion.
Hyperthyroidisms
diagnosis is based on
measurement of thyroid
hormone concentration
via blood work. Difficult
cases may require spe-
cialized blood tests or
imaging. Treatment
consists of drug therapy
or radiation or less com-
monly surgery. This disease is
also very treatable in the long
term. Treatment with radioac-
tive iodine (I-131) will
require referral to a specialty
clinic or teaching institution
in your area.
Optimal treatment of any
persistent medical condition
depends on establishing the
correct diagnosis. The symp-
tom group polyuria and poly-
dipsia has many different
potential causes, and it is
important to identify the
underlying cause before begin-
ning treatment. Please visit
your veterinarian as soon as
you notice any changes
because with an early diagno-
sis you often get a better out-
come.

Tutoring not only uses time
constructively with students
on their academic needs, it
also helps to establish an
understanding of time man-
agement and responsibility.
We all wish there were more
hours in a day; receiving tutor-
ing instills skills such as sched-
uling, organization, time man-
agement and proper prior
planning. We all need to learn
and apply the 7 Ps: Proper
Prior Planning Prevents Poor

Tutoring introduces and
strengthens study and life
skills
Every student has partic-
ular strengths within learning
and life. When tutoring, tutors
are able to help students truly
recognize their individual abil-
ities, train them how to
advance those skills and then
together reinforce their skills
into becoming natural talents.
Tutoring channels every learn-
ing style (visual, auditory and
kinesthetic), ensuring to reach
all children on their own per-
sonal best level possible.
Tutoring trains the brain for
accomplishment and success
Collectively, with the
above points, tutoring gives
students the competitive edge
they need to be able to

tion and time management.
Tutors transform from teachers
in the beginning to the stu-

squad, support system and
most importantly, trusted

Not all tutoring facilities are
the same
Each paragraph herein is
what tutoring facilities state
they pursue to achieve, but not
all tutors can accomplish these
goals due to the lack of direc-
tion and curriculum within
their establishments. Subject-
related material, identical
school curriculum training,
personalized instruction and
technology are the most vital
tools for accomplishing all that
tutoring aspires to achieve.
Many existing tutoring facili-
ties have two or three out of
the four crucial elements.
Taking the time out to fully
study the tutoring services
available is vital. Choosing the
wrong tutor is detrimental to a
students learning health, as
well as your wallet!
Pompton Plains is the
proud home for a brand new
high-tech facility called
Brainy-Acts. At Brainy-Acts
every element of tutoring is
available for each level of stu-
dent. Our tutors work with
each student individually with
the exact curriculum from
school. They identify and
build students' strengths,
instill confidence, establish
goal-setting skills and more
all while reaching the students
on multiple levels of commu-
nication and interest.
Different teaching techniques
are used for each student,
technology is incorporated as
much as possible and the con-
nection between school, life
and a successful future are
intertwined into every lesson.
Brainy-Acts ultimate goals are
for grade scores to reach new
heights, and for students to
have a better understanding of
education and a tighter grasp
on life skills. Most important-
ly, Brainy-Acts helps students
achieve ultimate personal suc-
cess and happiness!
The education you
receive throughout your
beginning years of life paves
the way for the path of tomor-
row. Every student deserves
the best, but not every school
can adhere to this dream;
tutoring is the answer to ensur-
ing your children are receiving
everything you feel they
deserve and more! Our chil-

W
hen people are
asked how much
they pay for elec-
tricity, most have no idea.
But I bet they can tell you
what they paid for their last
tank of gas. Some people do
know what they pay, but
dont think there are any
options.
Remember the blizzard
last Halloween? What caused
most of the power outages in
the Northeast were heavy
snow-laden branches and
trees falling and knocking
down power lines. Whom do
you think is going to pay for
the millions of dollars it took
to repair everything?
What about electricity
failure due to an old grid?
Our electric grid is antiquat-
ed and falling apart in many
areas. It has to be maintained
and rebuilt. Estimates put the
cost at upwards of $5 billion
to accommodate new capaci-
ty and upgrade existing sys-
tems. Whom do you think is
going to pay for that?
Electricity rates are ris-
ing all over the country, but
the details often go unno-
ticed in statements. People
typically just pay what the
bills say they owe. Not like
you have a choice, right?
Wrong!
You do have a choice.
There are many options to
either reduce your consump-
tion or eliminate electric
bills. The obvious choice is
to install solar panels to pro-
duce your own electricity.
You see it everywhere and
probably wonder, Am I
missing out on something?
You can now get solar for no
money down, save from day
one and lock in the cost of
your electricity for 25 years
or more, typically at todays
rates. Current state and fed-
eral incentives make it the
obvious choice to save.
But not every home is
good for solar. And some
towns are downright anti-
solar, passing restrictive ordi-
nances against homeowners
who want to go solar. There
are other choices. LED
lighting is a great
option. While prices
are still
h i g h ,
paybacks
in high usage
areas of the home, such
as kitchens and family rooms
can run as low as two years.
They last about 15 times
longer than other bulbs and
dont have mercury in them.
Motion activated light-
ing is another option. If you
have kids who constantly
leave lights on when leaving
a room, this is a great solu-
tion. Activated by move-
ment, they can be set to shut
off after a defined period of
time.
Smart technology power
strips can be used for a com-
puter system or home the-
ater. They shut down periph-
eral devices when the com-
puter goes into sleep mode or
the home theater system is
turned off. This stops the use
of phantom energy.
Typically, these systems use
an average of $30$50 per
year in phantom energy. At
about $30 each, Smart
Strips pay back in about a
year.
So, you may not know
what you pay for electricity,
but you should know that
you do have a choice!

parents to get kids off the
couch and outdoors for some
fun in the sun. Instead of
spending summer afternoons
in front of the television, kids
who play golf are out patrolling
pristine golf courses while get-
ting some cardiovascular exer-
cise along the way. Golf can
also strengthen a childs hand-
eye coordination, which can
help them in other activities,
including many different
sports.
Though many people do
not begin playing golf until
theyve reached adulthood, its
never too early for boys and
girls to start learning the game
of golf. Parents of preschoolers
can start their kids off with a
toddler play set. Though its
just a toy, a play set can help
lay a solid foundation for future
golfers. Kids who have
watched Mom and Dad play
golf or practice their swing can
develop their own swings on
their play set.
As kids approach school
age, dont overlook the nearby
putt-putt or miniature golf
range as a valuable teaching
tool. Miniature golf clubs are
small enough for many chil-
dren to use comfortably, and
kids can use miniature golf
courses as a place to put any
lessons or advice on putting to
good use. Whats more, a
miniature golf course is more
than just golf, with creative
courses and other fun activi-
ties, so kids wont feel over-
whelmed with golf.
When kids move on from
preschool to elementary
school, some might want to tag
along with Mom or Dad to the
driving range. You should try
to avoid overwhelming kids
with too much instruction or
information. Instead, keep
things as simple as possible,
teaching them the basic swing
and encouraging them no mat-
ter how quickly they adapt.
As kids enter middle
school and approach high
school, those who are enjoying
the game of golf can take
advantage of the driving range
if they havent already begun
to. A driving range typically
has markers that indicate the
distance of a regular hole,
regardless of which tee you will
play from on an actual golf
course. Kids can aim for holes
at shorter distances to learn
how far their drives are going.
You can then adjust the lessons
you teach your children based
on how far youngsters can
drive the ball.
As a child gets closer to
high school, you might want to
buy the child his or her own set
of clubs. Look for inexpensive
clubs (oftentimes, thrift stores
or other secondhand retailers
have clubs for sale) because
growing children will eventu-
ally grow out of their first set of
clubs. When your child finds a
set of clubs that suits him or
her, teach the proper way to
swing and consider signing up
your son or daughter for les-
sons. Those first few lessons
can prove invaluable, turning a
pastime into a passion kids will
carry with them throughout
their lives.

ftentimes, buying a
home opens up a
bottomless pit of
opportunities for projects and
improvements. While some
homeowners engage in differ-
ent repairs and fix-ups out of
necessity, many others like to
freshen-up their spaces out of
personal preference instead of
need. But even the most well-
intentioned projects can be
waylaid if budgets are tight.
What many homeown-
ers may not realize is that
there are many ways to make
updates and changes to a
home that do not require a
major overhaul or a large
price tag. The following are
seven projects that wont
break the bank.
1. Move around furniture.
You may be able to change
the look of a room without
spending any money. Interior
designers know how to
arrange furniture for maxi-
mum appeal, but the average
homeowner can do it, too.
Find a focal point in the
room and angle the furniture
toward it. Dont make the
focal point the television,
however. Try changing the
placement of chairs and sofas.
Simply moving a curio cabi-
net from one corner to anoth-
er may also make a difference.
2. Add lighting. Lighting at
different levels in the room
can create a vibrant impact.
Many homeowners mistaken-
ly put in a couple of table
lamps and think that will be
adequate. However, properly
illuminating a room means
varying the lighting to create
different moods at different
times. Plus, more light can
make a room feel more wel-
coming.
3. Add new pillows or drapes.

Changing a few aspects of a
room can give it an entirely
new look. If you want to add
a splash of color but dont
know what to do, think about
incorporating some new
throw pillows or change the
curtains. An accessory here
and there in a bright color
also can incorporate a new
hue without it being over-
whelming.
4. Change knobs or small
accents. Give a room a new
look by focusing on the small
details. Switch out cabinet
knobs for something updated
and modern. Take inventory
of wall outlets and light
switches and think about
selecting new ones that coor-
dinate with your home decor.
5. Use plants. Empty corners
or spots youre not certain
how to fill may benefit from a
plant. Plants are inexpensive
ways to add instant color and
visual appeal to a room. Plus,
having live plants can help
improve indoor air by filter-
ing out contaminants. A
home with plants also feels
more cozy.
6. Hang new wall art. It may
be time to look at your photos
and artwork and make a few
adjustments. Finding new
prints to hang could instantly
change a rooms ambience.
And you neednt spend a lot
of money on professional
photography, either. Grab
your camera and take a few
close-up shots of flowers or
take in a landscape scenery.
Many of todays home print-
ers can produce professional-
quality prints in minutes.
7. Try a new coat of paint.

here are so many dif-
ferent reasons to
throw a party. From
birthdays to bar mitzvahs,
the reasons to celebrate are
many. Some people are sea-
soned experts at planning
and executing the perfect
party, while others are more
apprehensive about hosting.
However, with a little guid-
ance, anyone can successfully
host a memorable party.
Whether youre plan-
ning an intimate cocktail
party for a few friends or a
large-scale event for a bap-
tism or anniversary, some
simple tips can reduce the
stress involved in being a
party host.
Step 1: Create a budget
Planning the perfect event
starts with establishing a
clear budget. Above all else,
setting a firm budget will
help set limits as to what and
how much you can buy for
the event. It will also then
help you make your lists and
details accordingly.
Be sure to list the main
components of the party first:
including food, beverages
and invitations. Its impor-
tant to allocate more of your
budget to those items and use
the remaining funds to deco-
rate and set the mood.
Step 2: Decide on a location
Knowing where you will be
having your party usually
dictated by how much you
can spend will help pave
the way for other decisions.
For example, if you are hav-
ing a party at a restaurant, all
you may need to handle are
providing favors and bringing
a cake. But if you are renting

Party planning like the pros
continued on next page
out a room or having the
party at home, your workload
will increase. There are many
different places you can have
a party, even some uncon-
ventional locales. Therefore,
if you are coming up with
roadblocks based on the cost
of venues, think outside the
box. Look to churches,
restaurant back rooms or
even schools for an empty
room.
Step 3: Make your shopping
list
Once youve established
your budget and location, its
time to make your shopping
list. List all of the foods you
plan to make and then sepa-
rately list the ingredients
that need to go into each
recipe. Purchase the neces-
sary ingredients if you are
having mixed drinks. An eas-
ier idea is to simply offer soft
drinks, wine and beer
because guests can serve
themselves. You can shop for
nonperishable items, like
utensils and decorations,
early on. Save perishable
foods for a few days before
the party.
Step 4: Get help
Hosting a party can be a lot
of work, so it can benefit you
to have a friend or family
member lend a hand. Perhaps
he or she can work on party
favors while youre putting
the finishing touches on the
meal or the dessert. If the
budget allows, some people
like to hire a service to wait
on guests and cleans up dur-
ing and after the party. This
is beneficial to hosts who
want to mingle with guests
and not worry about collect-
ing soiled dishes and bever-
age glasses.
Step 5: Decide on personal-
ization
Although there may be
the temptation to have a
theme party, sometimes these
can come off as immature.
Instead, think about putting
your own personal touch on
the party planning. For
example, if youre a budding
artist, decorate with pieces
you have made and other
inexpensive works of art.
Think about having a deco-
rative item as a centralized
theme, such as crystal vases
or birdhouses. Maybe the
party will be dazzling because
of a particular color scheme.
Figure out what you like and
then go with that instead of a
preconceived concept from a
party store.
Professional party plan-
ners make their money by
creating one-of-a-kind
events for their clients. You,
too, can host a party that will
be magical with just a little
organization.

our customers to also take the food quality that they
expect very seriously. Our buying power from operating
9 busy stores means not only lower prices
for our customers but exclusive deals
with one of Wisconsins finest cheese dairies.
At Anthony Francos we frown on the word
"frozen" as we receive daily meat and vegetable
deliveries from the Hunts Point market in NY.
Most of all, our pasta is of the finest quality,
made fresh and delivered to us weekly from one
of Brooklyn's oldest Pasta Houses.

Owe more than your
home is worth?
A
ll across North
America, home
builders tend to agree
that the better real estate
investments for both the
occupant and for future re-sale
value may be best served by a
whole new approach to con-
struction. One major change
addressing energy consumption
and rising fuel costs is the
optional use of an air-tight,
solid concrete system to replace
inefficient wood framing.
Insulated concrete forms
(ICFs) erect a building with an
interlocking system, similar to
Lego.
Its a switch for builders,
but those who have switched
over tell us its quite easy to
build with ICFs, says Todd
Blyth at Nudura, a leading
name in the field. Customer
demand has driven this change
and builders are now seeing
how green construction options
can have a positive impact on
their business.
Indeed, concrete is plenti-
ful and its in high demand.
The ICF system is now the
choice wall-building method
on net-zero construction proj-
ects south of the border. The
term net-zero applies to build-
ings that are so energy efficient
they dont tap any public utility
fuel supplies at all. ICF con-
struction has already produced
net-zero elementary schools in
the United States, where
Canadian technology was
applied with the Nudura system
of ICFs. The goal in the future
is for as many homes, schools,
and public buildings as possible
to be designed for net-zero from
the ground up.

Building guide
If this type of energy-efficiency sounds
right for you, too, be sure to make specific
requests to your builder, Blyth says.
Underscoring these proactive measures, the
non-profit organization LEED also reminds us
that constructing a green home leaves a much
smaller carbon footprint due to less demand on
natural resources. It will create less waste and
be healthier and more comfortable for the
occupants. If youre thinking about building to
the LEED standard, take a look at just one
example of the efficiency and benefits if you
switch from wood-framing to concrete. The
ICF system is explained and found at
nudura.com, with a snapshot here:
Fuel Savings: Walls built with ICFs are proven
to reduce energy bills up to 70 percent; reduce
greenhouse gas emissions; and reduce or elimi-
nate exposure to mold, mildew and other
indoor toxins. The net cost over time is compa-
rable to that of owning a conventional home
and the resale return is generally assured.
Durability: Concrete is expected to stand the
test of time. Due to high impact resistance,
these concrete walls assure maximum safety in
high wind areas. Fire resistance is also reported
to be maximized at four hours.
Comfort: As opposed to wood frames, air gaps
are eliminated and that minimizes the potential
for mould growth and draft. The end result is an
airtight structure that enables the mechanical
systems to heat, cool and ventilate the structure
more efficiently, creating a healthier living and
working environment.
Responsibility: The materials are totally
recyclable and the system is designed to cre-
ate less waste (for landfill) during the con-
struction process. Combined with other eco-
construction methods, this concrete system
will significantly reduce carbon emissions by
lowering the amount of fossil fuels needed for
heating and cooling.
