pronoun Lei (or Ella), meaning she, stands for Vostra Signoria, Your Lordship or Your Ladyship, which was formerly the polite form of address. The word Signoria
being feminine, a feminine pronoun is used to take its Lei is generally used in conversation, Ella place. being used only in writing, ^lla or Lei are generally written
with a capital
letter.
'
b) The polite form, or the third person, is generally used in addressing superiors or equals with whom there is not much intimacy; the second person plural (voi,
you) is used in business and in addressing inferiors; the second person singular (tu, thou) to relatives, to intimate friends and to children.
c There are, however, no fixed rules for the use of ooi and Lei, which changes according to the habits of various parts of Italy. Voi is often used among friends as a sort of middle-way between the formality of Lei, and the intimacy of tu. A foreigner with no great familiarity with the language will do well to avoid entirely the use of voi, and use the polite form in addressing all persons, except children.
