Teachers Goals: Teachers will utilize time management and equity of opportunity to allow each student to participate fully and develop better ideas of assessment. Schedule: 5 Minutes Introduction of Topic: We will begin by informing students to recall the assigned reading and to open the reading on their computer or get out a hard copy. We will provide a link to a website (http://answergarden.ch/view/38470) where students can post key ideas from the reading they had for today. We will then open up a student review, using the answergarden responses, of the reading to allow students to verbally recall the information, which will also help students gain new insights. 10 Minutes - Whip Around Activity: (Whole Class) Everyone needs a sheet of paper to write on (not to turn in) This activity is kind of like scattergories Create a list of 3-4 ways you can check for understanding in the classroom (If you were a teacher, how would you check to see if your students understood the material?) Everybody stands up Volunteers say one thing on their list If one of the things on your list is said, you can cross it off. If everything on your list is crossed off, you can sit down 15 Minutes - Whole Class Think-Pair-Share Look at the list of words and take a few minutes to see how many you can define (either in your

head or on paper) Talk with a partner to see if you can learn any other words you missed Lets share with the class List of Key Terms That Need Defining: Authentic Assessment Psychometrics Performance-based Assessment Matrix Sampling Object-based Inquiry Valid Assessment Reliable Assessment PARCC

30 minutes - Whole Class discussion/questions - How could we as teachers incorporate these assessments into the high school classroom? What types of content would these activities work best with? Which would work best for social studies? - Did these assessments have any bias in them? - What are some deficiencies faced when using certain types of assessment with social studies curriculum? -During this lesson we have used a few exercises embedded in a lesson plan to demonstrate alternative forms of assessment. What are some bad examples of assessment from your own experience, texts, other classes? - What evidence is needed to confirm that the students acquired the desired outcomes from the lesson?
