NEW LIFE MEMBER

At the 2008 Annual General Meeting (3 December 2007), the member clubs of Brisbane Hockey Association voted to award Life Membership of the the Association to Mr. Norm Ludwig.

Norm's interest in hockey began in the 1970's through his sons, Paul and Wayne. Norm held the position of BJHA Treasurer from 1985 to 1990. He then served as BHA Treasurer 1991 to 1994. From 1998 through to 2001, he was a member of the BHA Investigations (Appeals) Committee. From 2000 to 2003 he was a member of the BJHA Executive as well as the BJHA Equipment Officer. From 2004 to the present he has served on the BHA Finance Committee. Norm has always been available to assist in other areas when required. For example he has stood in for other BHA board members at HQ meeting when they have not been able to attend. He was the regular liaison officer between BHA and Shawsportz for the duration of its commercial arrangement with BHA. He has attended representative matches and performed a variety of roles on behalf of BHA. In 2004, Norm was awarded a BHA Merit Award. Norms wisdom, experience and advice has been welcomed and sought by BHA Presidents for many years and his input has been invaluable. Norm continues to provide valuable support to the BHA Treasurer and to the BHA Office. Congratulations Norm!

The year was also marked by the significant challenges resulting from the demise of ShawSportz. In reflecting on 2008 there are many highlights to note including:

Newspapers corresponding to the catchment areas of the teams competing. The work experience provided for the final year journalism students also assisted them in gaining permanent employment with various news outlets. Thank you to club coaches and officials for supporting Lee with information and comments on your games.

SHAWSPORTZ AN UNEXPECTED CHALLENGE

At the start of 2008 ShawSportz went into liquidation which impacted on the operation of BHA, not only through the availability of Burringbar and Shaw Park for fixtures, but also through the additional costs imposed through the hire of the State Hockey Centre for grass fixtures and the loss of the contribution from ShawSportz related to the use of Shaw Park. Due to the exorbitant field hire charges set by the Administrator and lack of attention to field preparation, hockey fixtures were not possible at Shaw Park in 2008. Junior fixtures were primarily held at the State Hockey Centre and Classic League fixtures rotated around available club fields and the State Hockey Centre. Thank you to those clubs who made their grounds available. The future management of the Burringbar Park Facility was unclear following the failure of ShawSportz. To keep Burringbar as a hockey centre managed for the benefit of hockey, BHA has worked closely with BWHA to develop and negotiate a joint management proposal with the Brisbane City Council. The proposal is now well developed and negotiations with the Council are progressing for the management of Burringbar to be vested in a management group involving BHA, BWHA, KWS Hockey Club and the Council. Valley Hockey Club is currently in negotiations over Shaw Park and when the future management of Shaw Park is resolved, BHA will be in a position to consider future arrangements for hockey fixtures at Shaw Park. Thank you to Paul Saunders for the extensive work, including the valuable time away from his business to attend meetings, that he has put in to progress these arrangements.

REPRESENTATIVE HOCKEY
In 2008 we continued our strong support and participation in State Championships achieving commendable results from Under 13 through to veterans as outlined below: U13 Fourth (3 teams) U15 Third (3 teams) U18 First (3 teams) Premier League First (and Fourth) State Open Fifth Over 35 - Second Over 40 Second Over 45 First Over 50 Third Over 55 First. On behalf of BHA and our representative players, thank you to all coaches and managers for your efforts in supporting our representative teams. New playing and walkout uniforms for representative teams were introduced in 2008 and were first used for our Premier League and State Open teams. The new uniforms used much lighter materials that have the ability to draw sweat away from the body to help keep the players cool. The new uniform also introduced walkout shorts to provide a consistent walkout uniform for all Brisbane teams as well as an alternative shirt for team coaches and managers. Importantly, the new kit was well received by our players. Thank you to Peter Harten for his vision and organisation to deliver on this important initiative for BHA. Also I would like to recognise Peters continuing hard work and commitment to the improvement of our representative program.

PREMIER LEAGUE AND STATE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

BHA hosted the Premier League and State Open championships for the second consecutive year. We set out to provide an enjoyable tournament that met the needs of the competition as well as the offfield needs of players, officials and spectators across the playing times. The Premier League and State Open Website developed for the 2007 championships was again utilised to provide up to date information and results of games. Phyllis Hawgood was Tournament Director and delivered a well run tournament. We provided a barbecue and a drinks tent on the hill that complemented the service available from HQ on Lytton. The barbecue and drinks tents were staffed by club volunteers with profits being distributed to their clubs. New volunteers were involved this year and this helps to grow the hockey community through clubs and their members working together and being involved in BHA activities and it was pleasing to be able to return the profits to hockey clubs. Thank you to Bruce and Veronica Luck for their dedication and hard work in organising the barbecue. Their good work starts well in advance to get all the facilities and supplies organised and this shows in the well run service provided across the tournament. Also the work of Paul and Fiona Saunders is recognised and appreciated for providing the catering for tournament officials across the weekend. Thank you to Fiona for her contribution to BHA by organising and providing this service. Thank you to all who assisted in the planning and delivery of the tournament. The positive feedback from players and associations about the atmosphere and in particular, the availability of food across the late matches is due to your efforts.

JOINT MEDAL DINNER FOR BHA AND BWHA

For the first time the Best and Fairest Medal Dinners for BHA and BWHA were held together at HQ on Lytton in September. The first combined function was well received and successful. We look forward to continuing this arrangement for 2009. The joint awards dinner continued the development of a stronger relationship between BHA and BWHA and highlights that there are opportunities to be able to work together to achieve common goals and utilise the pooling of resources to gain better outcomes for both associations. Congratulations to Adam Byrnes who was awarded the BHA Best and Fairest Medal and to Peter Dillon as BHA Rookie of the Year. Congratulations also to the players recognised as the best and fairest for the respective teams.

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF POINTS CAP SYSTEM

Following debate about measures to improve the BHA competition and development of Brisbane juniors over recent seasons and annual Corporate Planning meetings, a Points Cap System was approved at the September General Meeting to apply from the 2009 season. The Points Cap System is a major initiative that has seen extensive debate and consideration to develop a system to support hockey development in Brisbane. The decision to proceed was not taken lightly and the operation of the Points Cap System will be reviewed to ensure that its meets the key objectives of placing greater emphasis (and reward) on clubs developing their own junior talent to a BHL1 standard and providing a platform to increase the standard of the Brisbane club competition across the competition ensuring a more consistent level of competitive matches. Fostering and supporting local development is a key outcome for BHA and the Points Cap System includes recognition and encouragement for the development of local talent by clubs. This is a significant initiative for BHA and will involve much work next season as it is implemented.

MEDIA COVERAGE
The 2008 season saw the continuation of the excellent work by Lee Oliver in having Brisbane hockey coverage in the local press. A special thank you to Lee for his good work, vision and commitment to media coverage of Brisbane hockey. BHA is proud to have nominated Lee for the Hockey Queensland Volunteer of the Year Award good luck to Lee with the nomination and the deserved recognition. The weekly match reports and photos from BHL 1 games on the BHA website were popular once again with a wide audience. Two new initiatives this year were firstly, the involvement of final year journalism students to attend the games and provide first hand comment on the game as well as conducting interviews with players and officials to provide quotes for newspaper articles. And secondly, the development of a BHL Media Pack containing a wide range of details on players and clubs to assist media coverage of the BHL competition. The success is evidenced by the regular articles including colour photographs of hockey in Brisbane published in Quest Community

CORPORATE IDENTITY
The corporate identity for the Association was updated this year. A new and modern logo was developed and has received positive feedback. The new logo now features on our representative uniforms. The development of the new corporate identity also included producing a new badge as well as a dress uniform to be worn by BHA

Board Officials. The dress uniform for Board Officials provides an identity for BHA officials as well as a professional image for the Association.

REGIONAL COACHING DIRECTOR

At the end of the season Darran Bisley resigned to pursue hockey opportunities in Belgium. Thank you to Darran for his contribution to Brisbane Hockey and we wish him well in his new endeavours. Mick Evans, who brings with him extensive experience in the Regional Coaching Director role for Cairns, has joined BHA in this role. We look forward to working with Mick, and benefiting from his experience and commitment, especially in the important area of junior recruitment and development.

Importantly, to my fellow Board members thank you for your contributions across a busy season. The many hours of your time and your work to run the Association for the benefit of Brisbane hockey players and supporters is appreciated. I look forward to continuing to work with you in 2009. Much has been achieved in 2008, however there remains much more to be done to improve our Association and hockey in Brisbane. As we look to 2009 there are many ways that you can contribute to the success of your Association. There are opportunities for all to contribute, from roles on the Board, as a member of a sub-committee or being part of a team to deliver one of the junior recruitment and development initiatives. Looking forward to working with you again in 2009.

JUNIOR RECRUITMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

The Junior Committee has commenced a very important initiative to recruit more players to hockey and grow the junior ranks of our association as well as to improve aspects of the game including development and umpiring. The success of this initiative is vital to our growth as an association and I urge all clubs and members to support these initiatives. Implementing these initiatives will be a major focus for BHA into and through 2009. Thank you to Mark Carter, June Grant, Peter Harten and members of the Junior Committee who have contributed to date.

BHA President

GENERAL SECRETARY'S REPORT

To be presented at the Seventy Sixth Annual General Meeting of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc to be held at Commercial Hockey Club Clubhouse, Newmarket, on Tuesday 2nd December 2008. Cr Newman, Mr Swann, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have pleasure in presenting the Annual Report for the 2008 Season. Once again your Association has experienced a successful year. As is always the case this is made possible by the ongoing dedicated efforts and commitment of your Association's volunteers. These include the Association President and Board, the Clubs and their many Officials and Delegates, as well as the various BHA and Club Managers and Coaches.

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS
Development of Technical Officers continued in 2008 with a number of people receiving training and progressing to be technical officers for matches in the BHA competition under the organisation of Phyllis Hawgood.

ADMINISTRATION
This year saw the implementation of more streamlined financial accounting processes. Payment by credit card was made available for the payment of invoices raised by BHA and this proved to be an outstanding success in reducing the number of unpaid invoices at the end of each settlement period. Online payments and direct debits via computer to all umpires, technical officials and most suppliers was extended further to reduce the use of cheques and combined with streamlined systems for payment voucher approval has reduced operating costs and administrative time involved. As many that work for BHA are volunteers, these process improvements helped to reduce the load of these volunteers.

FIXTURES
The associated table summarises the various dates associated with all BHA Competitions for 2008. For the majority of divisions, the commencement of Fixtures for 2008 was close to normal. The notable exception was the Veterans Hockey League (VHL) Divisions which commenced earlier due to the extra rounds required for the increase in teams and the fact that the national championships were schedule for mid-season in Darwin. Additionally the Brisbane Hockey League (BHL) Divisions 3, 4 and 5 commenced one week earlier than Divisions 1 and 2 due the requirement of differing numbers of rounds for these divisions. The Memorial Cup was contested as separate matches in BHL 1 5 and Classic Hockey League (CHL) Divisions 1 and 2. The Cup is contested by the two leading teams at the end of the first complete round in each Senior Division. Due to time constraints and the unavailability of suitable turf times for the Veterans Divisions the Memorial Cup for VHL1 3 were awarded to the leading team in each division at the conclusion of the first complete round. The President's Trophy, which is normally contested between the two leading teams at the end of the second complete round in each Senior Division, was not played due to the unavailability of suitable turf time. The leading team in each Senior Division at the end of the second complete round was declared the winner for each Division. A full list of the winning teams for both the Memorial Cup and the President's Trophy can be found in the Awards section of this report.

NEW LIFE MEMBER

Congratulations to Norm Ludwig for being awarded life membership of BHA at the 2007 Annual General Meeting. This award recognises the extensive service that Norm has given to the Association over an extended period of time. Thank you to Norm for his continuing work to support the association this year. Congratulations to all premiership winning teams and players of the finals. The finals series produced some good skilful hockey and exciting matches. There was a spread of premierships across a range of clubs, especially in the junior grand finals. (Details of premiership winners, runners up and players of the finals are presented later in the report.) Well done to all players for your participation in the 2008 BHA competitions. Thank you to the Junior Committee for their work in running the junior competition and to club delegates and club officials, both senior and junior, for your contribution to Brisbane hockey throughout 2008. Thanks also to Kim Rendell for his support and efforts as General Secretary across a busy season. Particular thanks to Kim for the compilation of the Annual Report a major task each year.

Annual Report 2008

Throughout the 2008 Season, BHA made use of the State Hockey Centre (two fields), the Burringbar Park Facility, the Redcliffe Hockey Centre and the Labrador Hockey Club for its artificial surface venues for Fixtures. Only BHL1 and several Junior J2 were scheduled to the Labrador surface. The VHL competition was only played on the two SHC surfaces and the Redcliffe surface. With the exception of the Labrador surface, all centres were shared each weekend on a rotational basis with BWHA. For CHL and Junior grass matches, the Association used several venues, including Finsbury Park, Brendale, Dorrington Park and the SHC. The operators of these venues are thanked for their efforts in preparing these venues for BHA Fixtures. The ten team BHL1 and the nine team BHL2 competitions were played played on Saturdays, while the BHL3, BHL4 and BHL5 competitions were scheduled predominantly on Sundays. However some of these matches were scheduled on Saturdays mainly to avoid the scheduling of some matches late on Sunday nights. Junior matches were scheduled on Saturday mornings with some exceptions late in the season being for double-headers. A single Under 13 match was played on Exhibition Wednesday by mutual agreement of the two Clubs involved. The VHL competitions continued to be played on Tuesday nights only.

COMMUNICATIONS
The Internet continues to be the primary means of communications for BHA. Meeting notices, fixture draws, representative team announcements, documentation and forms, match reports, general news and updates are emailed to Clubs and their Delegates and are posted on the BHA Website - www.bha.org.au The Association's Bookkeeper also emails invoices directly to Members and Clubs and uses Internet Banking to directly deposit payments to individuals for Umpiring and Technical Bench duties, etc. The overall look and feel of the BHA Website was maintained from the previous year. While the BHA's CMS based Website has been designed, created and is maintained by yours truly, many volunteers participate in the ever increasing task of posting and maintaining content. For example, each affiliated Club has access to maintain their contact details under the BHA Clubs section of the site. The BHA Coaching Development Manager, Darran Bisley, maintained the Representative Teams section with up to date information and details of representative teams including training times and details of the respective Championships. The Hon Secretary of the BHA Junior Committee, June Grant, maintained the Junior Umpiring allocations, Junior scores as well as all of the Association's Points Tables. The Umpire Coordinators, Chris Grew and Rowan Green, entered the Umpiring allocations for Senior matches. Lee Oliver, has access to the BHL fixture area where he once again posted his reports and photos throughout the season. However, disappointingly I was unable to interest anyone from the Veterans to assist by posting scores and information. The BHA Website makes use of an award winning online spreadsheet service called EditGrid for displaying all of its Fixtures, Points Tables and various other information. This is an excellent system with access being given to various persons allowing them to directly edit data that is displayed on the BHA Website. However, BHA is investigating the possible use of SportingPulse for Fixtures and Points Tables in 2009. Some complimentary feedback was also received from several visitors to the BHA Snippets of History Website www.bha.org.au/history/ Time permitting, this Website is due for a facelift and the addition of further material in the near future. The 2007 BHA Website has been archived to www.bha.org.au/07/ albeit with a different template from the original site.

REPRESENTATIVE
Brisbane's representative teams performed well throughout 2008. The players of each representative team along with the coaches, managers and results are listed in the Representative Teams 2008 section of this report. All are to be congratulated for a job well done. I wish to thank the BHA Director of Sporting Outcomes, Peter Harten, for his efforts in this area. The information and data he has gathered since 2006 is now being put to good use within the Association's representative programme.

PREMIER LEAGUE & STATE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

For the second year straight BHA was called on to host the Men's Premier League and State Open Championships at the SHC. The tournament was held 3rd - 5th May 2008. Building upon last year's experience the BHA Committee once again did an excellent job of organising and running this prestigious event. A purpose built Website for this event was once again hosted by BHA at www.bha.org.au/premier/ The site received a huge number of hits. A Web presence such as this is a must for every State Championship or Tournament. I'd like to particularly thank the BHA President, Greg Swann, for his exceptional efforts as Tournament Convenor, Bruce and Veronica Luck who managed the catering, including the manning of the burger tent with their band of volunteers from various Clubs. Thanks also go to the Tournament Director, Phyllis Hawgood and her team who managed the playing side of the tournament. The 2009 event is scheduled for Townsville.

BHA BEST AND FAIREST MEDAL

The 2008 BHA Best and Fairest Medal presentation was held as a joint event for the first time with BWHA at the SHC on Saturday 23rd August 2008. On the BHA side, Darran Bisley was responsible for most of the organising and continuous liaison with BWHA. As in 2007, free transport to a city night club afterwards was also provided. The night appeared to be well received by most who attended. Adam Byrnes of Labrador was named the winner of the 2008 BHA Best & Fairest Medal. Peter Dillon of Redcliffe was named BHA Rookie of the Year. Other winners of awards included Richard Arthur who was named BHA Umpire of the Year for a second year and Commercial's Blair Brown was named as BHA Coach of the Year. A more detailed listing of these and other winners can be found in the Awards section later in this report.

STANDING COMMITTEES
This year the BHA Judiciary Committee was convened to investigate four incidents involving members of the Association. In late June a committee made up of members of the Board was formed to investigate an incident involving a Junior parent and an Umpire. The Appeals Committee was not required to convene during 2008. The full-time members of these committees are listed under Officials on page three. I wish to thank the members of each of these committees as well as those who volunteered to stand in from time to time. The Selection Committees, under the Sporting Outcomes portfolio, performed well. Team selections were provided in a timely manner allowing for team training and uniform distribution prior to all championships. A Grounds Committee was not formed for 2008.

THE BHA OFFICE

As always, the BHA Office has been a hive of activity throughout the year. While for most of the year Darran Bisley and myself worked in the Office on a full-time basis, we also appreciate the regular assistance provided by various volunteers who join us from time to time. I'd particularly like to thank Norm Ludwig who assisted in the area of auditing match sheets for the payment of Umpires and Technical Supervisors. Thanks also goes to Susan Johnston who attends to the Association's financial matters each Monday and provides assistance with other tasks as required. Sam Brooks has been regularly assisting as a volunteer in the Office since August and has played a big part in the compilation of much of this year's Annual Report. In mid-September Darran Bisley left for Belgium once again. In his place, BHA has employed Michael (Mick) Evans formerly of Cairns, as its new Regional Coaching Director. Mick is settling in very well and is a welcome addition to the BHA Staff. He is set to move his family to Brisbane over the Christmas break. During 2008, several items of office equipment were replaced and updated. These included the replacement of a the photocopier with a sponsored, much newer, refurbished model from Konica Minolta. Two PC's were replaced with new systems, while two others were repaired and upgraded by yours truly. Recently a wireless router has been installed on the office network for use with various notebook PC's and

MEETINGS
During 2008 the BHA General Committee met on ten occasions beginning with its first meeting immediately following on from the AGM on 3rd December 2007. The BHA Board of Management met on twenty-three occasions. This year's Corporate Planning sessions were held on 26th October and 9th November. With the exception of the AGM, which was held at Sports House, Milton, all BHA Board Meetings were held in the BHA Office and all BHA General Committee Meetings were held in the Hockey Queensland Players' Room at the SHC. The first of the Corporate Planning sessions was held in the Commercial HC Clubhouse at Finsbury Park while the second was held in the Northern Suburbs HC Clubhouse at Dorrington Park.

a new colour laser printer now provides the occasional colour document. As a result of the photocopier now providing the bulk of the printed output, several older inefficient inkjet and laser printers have been decommissioned.

FACILITIES
BHA was able to utilise, in conjunction with BWHA, the facilities of the State Hockey Centre, which currently has two high quality carpets. Redcliffes wet/dry surface was into its second season and Burringbar Park was also used, at increased cost, once the demise of Shaw Sportz was evident. The Burringbar carpet has almost reached its use by date and BHA and BWHA are in discussions with the Brisbane City Council to manage this facility on behalf of the council. Shaw Sportz grass fields at Kalinga were not used due to the extraordinary costs proposed by P. A. Lucas Administrators and the lack of maintenance of the fields. BHA is indebted, in particular, to Commercial, Pine Rivers St Andrews and Northern Suburbs hockey clubs for the use of their fields throughout the season at no cost. The Tin Shed, whilst adequate as the present home of BHA, does have its shortcomings and will eventually become unsuitable for our requirements. Constantly under evaluation are any and all developments of new facilities that may be suitable for this association.

CONCLUSION
In concluding this report I wish to thank all who assist and contribute to the operation of the Association. Without this assistance and involvement, particularly from the volunteers, this Association would be unable to function. In particular I wish to thank the BHA President, Greg Swann, and the Board of Directors, for their continuing efforts. BHA extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during the year. I thank my wife Mary and my family for their continued patience and understanding.

TREASURER'S REPORT
FINANCE
The 2008 Financial Statements of Brisbane Hockey Association Inc. for the year ending 30 September 2008 are submitted to the member clubs and appear in this Annual Report. The financial position of the association, against the Budget forecast, is healthy but there are some mitigating circumstances that have contributed to our stated profit. Only four clubs availed themselves of the junior development grants, which was disappointing. Uniform sales were higher that originally forecast, as were the associated uniform purchasing costs and payments to Umpires and Technical officials were also substantially higher that budgeted. Administrative costs were exactly as proposed, with the exception of the Development Officers position, which was not filled. The BHA direct On-line computer payment system for First Aid, Umpires and Technical bench continues to make the management of these payments simpler. We have installed an EFTPOS - Credit card facility in our office to expedite the payments to BHA for uniforms and representative costs. This has reduced virtually to nil, outstanding payments for these items. While BHA pays facilities providers promptly, including all Hockey Queensland invoices, there was no bonus payment forthcoming from HQ, as mentioned in last years Annual report and at this time, there seems to be no replacement scheme. There were financial impacts with the demise of Shaw Sportz. The agreed payment for the use of Shaw Park during the previous season did not materialize and we await a minor payment from the administrator. The cost of using the SHC for grass fixtures was substantial, which BHA carried for the 2008 season. I would like to thank the following people for their generous assistance, keeping in mind that all board members and volunteers give generously of their own time, at no cost to this Association. The volunteers: Norm Ludwig who diligently co-ordinates all payment to Umpires, officials, first aid and turf hire costs. Greg Swann who expertly handles the very large task of all representative airline and accommodation bookings. June Grant for her valued assistance with monies from the junior divisions. All clubs secretaries and treasurers, for their voluntary efforts and time, required to maintain the running of their clubs. Our paid staff: Susan Johnston, who achieves with efficiency, accuracy and good humour in one day per week, what many others could not in 5 days. Kim Rendell, who co-ordinates all day to day office protocol and other financial matters, when and as required. To my fellow board members, my thanks also and in particular additional thanks to Greg Swann who has been proactive, supportive and extremely hard working through this quite difficult year.

COMPETITIONS

A close cooperative working relationship between BHA and BWHA allowed clubs to have some of their teams together at the same venue where possible throughout the season. At this point I would like to acknowledge the tremendous support and cooperation of my BWHA counterpart, Jenny Heron. The season began with the intention and hope that BHL fixtures would be on a home and away basis but the club mix in the various divisions and availability of fields did not support this in practice. By the end of the season it eventuated that some clubs played more home games than others. As playing surfaces deteriorated during last year the BHA board decided to rotate CHL fixture between the following grounds, Finsbury Park, Brendale, Dorrington Park and SHC. Shaw Park was not used this season but BHA hopes fields are ok for next season. I, myself, must thank the Vets Committee for organising the Vets competition. The Junior competition would not have been possible without the huge input of June Grant and Mark Carter and their helpers. In closing I would like to extend my thanks and best wishes to all who have assisted me this season in getting my job done, in particular, Kim Rendell whose job often extends well beyond his office hours and impinges on his time with his very understanding family.

Increasing the numbers of junior players and developing the existing playing group has been a priority for Brisbane Hockey over the past few years. Brisbane Hockey continues to support initiatives by the clubs that focus on these aspects. For the second year running, BHA has made funds available to clubs to assist implement junior development programs and several clubs have taken up this offer. We applaud these clubs and are looking forward to seeing the results of these programs. In the 2007 season, Lee Oliver began the task of writing match reports on all the Brisbane Hockey League Division 1 matches. These reports appeared on the BHA Website. Due to the number of venues where fixtures were held, it was impossible for Lee to personally attend each match and was forced to resort to telephone interviews with team managers to collect his information. To improve the quality of these reports and to ensure maximum coverage, at the start of the 2008 season, Lee initiated a program for final year journalism students to assist him. In order to increase the chances and opportunities for employment in the journalism industry, students must be published regularly. Lee Oliver has given these students an opportunity which has enormously benefited Brisbane Hockey and the sport of hockey in general. All of the students involved in reporting on the Brisbane Hockey League have secured permanent employment with various news outlets. The reports that Lee and his students have written have appeared in the Quest Community Newspapers corresponding to the catchment area of the teams competing. This has resulted in an average of eight articles appearing in Brisbane newspapers every weekend, many of them with colour photographs. This extensive coverage is unprecedented in not only Brisbane but Queensland as a whole and rivals the local coverage that the high profile sports have enjoyed for many years. Brisbane Hockey Association would like to thank Lee Oliver and his journalism students for all their hard work in improving the exposure of our great sport.

SPORTING O UTCOMES

Season 2008 has been one of progress on the Brisbane representative front. Our Premier League and Under 18 teams defended the State titles as well as the Under 18 (2) team gaining promotion to the division 1 competition for next season. Great result for Brisbane to have won back to back the titles in the top two premier competitions in Queensland and to now have two teams in each of those competitions. Well done to all those involved. New playing uniforms were also introduced this season which gave Brisbane a more up to date look as well as having the latest clothing technology utilised to maximise the players comfort. Also introduced were full walkout uniforms and they looked terrific when you had a full contingent of Brisbane representatives all gathered together. Id like to give my thanks to Sonya Taylor and Karen Argent for the many hours they spent to measure up all the players and help complete the order forms and then collate and deliver the orders to everyone. Id also like to thank Howard Rowland and Graham Taylor for their great assistance in being able to pull the whole project together to make it work with a minimum of problems. Once again, the coaches, assistant coaches and managers did a terrific job giving up their time to help look after the boys and give them a good experience when playing for Brisbane. Greg Swann again did a fantastic job organising the transport and accommodation for all our Brisbane teams. To do this on top of his role as BHA President, and many other hockey commitments, underlines his commitment to hockey and his wish for success for all our players. My thanks goes to the selectors who took on these roles this year. You have done an admirable job and this is reflected by the sound results gained by all Brisbane teams during season 2008. Id also like to pass on my appreciation of the efforts of Darran Bisley in the work he has done with the representative players in Brisbane. Bis has now moved on to greener pastures in Belgium and I wish him all the best with the opportunity he has been given. Im sure that with the appointment of Mick Evans as Darrans replacement the representative program can only continue to go forward. Mick brings a wealth of experience with him and his background in the regional centre of Cairns will help us in deciding the best way forward for hockey in Brisbane. Thank you to all those parents who brought their children to the training sessions for their respective teams as obviously without your ongoing commitment the job of the coach becomes harder as he tries to mould together a group that has never played together before. Whilst we continue to have such a committed bunch of parents Brisbane hockey will continue to make forward progress. Yours in hockey,

Jacqui Brodin
Director of Marketing & Hockey Clubs

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have pleasure in submitting this report on the activities of the Association for the 2008 season. This season saw a net increase in the number of registered players of four. Minkey (Under 7) increased by nine while there was a decrease in Under 9 of six, in Under 11 of seven and in Under 13 of five. The J grades increased their numbers by thirteen.

PLAYING SEASON
The season commenced on Saturday 29th March 2008 with all teams playing Saturdays. We endeavoured to keep the age grades playing at the same time each week with Under 7 at 8:30am and Under 9 at 9:30am each week at State Hockey Centre (as Shaw Park was not available). Under 11s were at 10:30am and 11:45am with Under 13 (2) at 11:45am all at State Hockey Centre. Under 13 (1) played most of their games on the turf at 8:00am when the turf was available with J1 at 10:45am, J2 games 9:15am, J3 either 9:15 or 10:45am. The semi-finals were all played at State Hockey Centre turf and Burringbar turf on Saturday 23rd August. Grass games were played on State Hockey Centre grass. The Preliminary Finals J1, J2, J3 and Under 13 (1) were played at the State Hockey Centre turf on Saturday 30th August with the Under 13 (2), Under 11 (1) and Under 11 (2) at the State Hockey Centre grass. All the grand final games were played at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday 6th September and my congratulations to all winning teams. Just Hockey supplied Vouchers for the player of each Grand Final game we thank them very much.

STATE UNDER 13 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The State Under 13 Championships were held at Gladstone from Monday 30th June to Friday 4th July. Brisbane entered 3 teams. Brisbane 1 finished fourth, Brisbane 2 finished fourteenth and Brisbane 3 finished third in Division 2. To our coaches Geoff Grant, Jan Hamilton and Mike Barrett, assistant coaches Adam Grant and Sam Brooks, our sincere thanks for your efforts and to Managers Kym Frearson, Bill Gordon and Alyson Allen we thank you for your assistance in managing the teams. Four players were selected in the Queensland team to play in the Invitational Carnival in Adelaide in October: Matthew Shaw, Nathan Hurley, Callum Rainbow and Joshua Beale. Simon Bell and Tim

This season saw the Brisbane Veterans competition consolidate with 18 teams for 2009. This resulted in both fields at the State Hockey centre and Redcliffe being used with 9 games every Tuesday evening. This season the divisions comprised of the following teams: VHL 1: VHL 2: VHL 3: Easts 1, Commercial 1, Bulimba 1, Valleys, University Easts 2, Bulimba 2, Redcliffe, Norths, South West United, St Andrews, Kedron, Commercial. Bulimba, Pine Hills, South West United, Storm.

STATE UNDER 15 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The State Under 15 Championships were held in Bundaberg from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July. Brisbane entered three teams with the number one team finishing third, the second team placed equal eleventh and the third team placed third in Division 2. To our coaches Mark Carter, Peter Harten, Howard Rowland, Assistant Coaches Phil Farlow, Matthew Pembroke and Glenys Harten Managers Bob Holmes, Lorraine Pembroke and Brett Gould thank you for all your efforts. Three players were selected in the Queensland team to play in the National Championships in Canberra in October; they were Daniel Beale, Robert Bell and Ethan Holmes. Matthew Argent was named a shadow and Hugh Pembroke was selected in the Talent Identification Squad. Congratulations to all these boys. Regional Coaching Director Darran Bisley also helped the coaches at the Under 13 and Under 15 championships and we thank him also.

Special mention to Valleys who agreed to move to Division One early in the season to avoid having a bye in this division. Results from Grand Final night: VHL 1: Bulimba defeated Commercial 1-0 VHL 2: Kedron Wavell 2 defeated St Andrews 2-1 VHL 3: Bulimba 3 defeated South West United 2-0 Presentations were made immediately after the games finished.

INTERCITY MATCHES
This year saw another busy intercity programme. In Coulter Shield this year the age groups continued the format of one day carnival. The Under 15 Coulter Shield was cancelled due to wet weather. The Under 13 were played at Tweed Border 25th May and Under 11 at Ipswich 3rd August. The Under 13 Brisbane (1) won the competition, Brisbane (2) were 8th and Brisbane (3) won Division 2. In Under 11 Brisbane (1) won the competition, Brisbane (2) were 7th and Brisbane 3 won Division 2. Sydney Under 15 and Under 13.teams came to Brisbane to play the 25th Challenge at the State Hockey Centre on Saturday 10th and 11th May with Brisbane winning the Under 13 and Sydney winning the Under 15.

This year the Golden Oldie was presented posthumously to Marino Berta. It was very fitting that last year's winner and close mate of Bert, Allen Schasser, accepted the award later to be presented to Berts wife. Marino Berta tragically passed away while playing a sport that he was very passionate about during the Australian National Veterans Hockey Titles in Darwin. Bert will be remembered by all Hockey players not only in Brisbane but across the country for his humour, skill and passion for the game he loved.

THURSDAY AFTERNOONS AT SHC

This afternoon run every Thursday, continued with very good attendance every week. This friendly session greets players of all abilities and ages and is enjoyed by all who participate.

JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT
This season our Regional Coaching Director Mr. Darran Bisley carried out the Junior Development programme for the year. We would like to thank Darran for his input into our Rep program this year. Mick Evans has now taken over this position from Darran from October 2008.

REPRESENTATIVE SEASON
This season saw Brisbane successful at the Qld State Titles in the Over 45 and Over 55 age groups: The State Titles were held at both Murwillumbah and Toowoomba. It was pleasing to see a team from Brisbane represented in the over 35 titles. Thanks must go to Allen Schasser and his team of selectors for their preparation of the teams this season. The Coulter Shield was once again very disappointing and there is serious concern about the future of this event given the lack of interest over recent seasons.

UMPIRES
This year saw several junior players gaining their badges in umpiring, these players umpiring in Coulter shield and the final series of games. I found it very difficult this year having to allocate umpires for fixture games as well as all the other duties. Callum Perey, Paul Mason and Scott Sweet umpired at the Under 13 championships in Gladstone, Declan Kilkenny, Toby Hamilton and James Treeby attended the Under 15 Championships in Bundaberg. In the latter part of the year Paul Mason took on training and testing some of the Junior umpires, a job well done Paul!

AUSTRALIAN VETERANS CHAMPIONSHIPS

This season saw the tournament held in Darwin in July. Queensland was well represented with teams across all age groups. The following players who play in the Brisbane Competition were selected in Australian Veterans Teams:

JUST HOCKEY
Vouchers from Just Hockey for new members signing on with clubs for $10 off a starters stick was again successful and Player of the Final Gift vouchers. We thank Just Hockey for their Sponsorship in 2008.

THANKS

Over 50: Stephen Sawyers Over 55: Allen Schasser Over 60: Robbie Ray

ASSOCIATION MEETINGS
The Association meetings were held on the third Monday of each month in the Hockey Queensland Players room. The attendance by delegates was very pleasing where constructive discussions on many topics were held. The Association wishes to thank the State Hockey Centre and Hockey Queensland in allowing the meetings to take place at no cost.

This season a conscious decision was made by the committee to share the responsibility across the participating clubs. As a result significant progress was made in areas including team selections, newsletter, draw, rules, fund raising, etc. Special thanks to all committee members who contributed to a successful season.

CONCLUSION
The Junior Committee extends its condolences to the passing of loved ones and family friends during this year. The Chairmans role was carried out by Mr. Mark Carter and I thank him for his assistance during the year. To Ian Hughes (Minutes) a special thank you for your assistance and efforts. I would also like to thank the Brisbane Hockey Association General Secretary Mr. Kim Rendell, Mr Peter Harten, Mr Russell Marsden and Mr Greg Swann for their help throughout the year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and help throughout the year and wish everyone best wishes for the forthcoming festive season and successful 2009.

THE WAY AHEAD

With additional teams predicted for season 2009 a healthy problem will be the accommodation of additional time slots required. The idea of having over 35 players participating in Division One has been considered to assist with integrating this age group into Veterans rather than wait until they turn 40. At a state level the titles will be in Rockhampton and Mackay in 2009 with the National Veterans tournament in Melbourne.

Each year a special medal is awarded to the "Best and Fairest Player" of BHL1. In order to establish a winner points are awarded in secret by the BHL1 Umpires throughout the Season. These points are then tallied and the results announced at a function at the end of the playing season. The 2008 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was awarded at a Presentation Dinner which was held jointly between BHA and BWHA at HQ on Lytton (SHC), Saturday 23rd August 2008. The Player of the Year and winner of the 2008 BHA Best & Fairest Medal was Labrador player Adam Byrnes..

These are contested in the Senior divisions only. In 2008 the Memorial Cup was contested by all BHL and CHL divisions on Saturday 21st June. Due to the unavailability of spare timeslots on which to schedule the President's Trophy finals or the VHL Memorial Cup finals, the BHA General Committee decided not to play them. For VHL competitions the Memorial Cup was awarded to the leading team at the conclusion of the first full round of fixtures, while the President's Trophy was awarded in each Senior division to the leading team in each division at the conclusion of the second full round of fixtures.

The Merv Harris Memorial Shield is awarded to the club with the best overall performance in the Senior Divisions. The winning club for 2008 was PR St Andrews Norths. The Shield was presented to the Presidents of PR St Andrews Norths at the BHA Best & Fairest Medal Presentation Dinner on Saturday 23th August 2008.

While the second table calculates the maximum points each team and then each club could accumulate (if they were to win every match) the first table calculates the percentage of points actually accumulated versus those maxima. The first table lists the eligible clubs in order of performance followed by the ineligible clubs alphabetically.
