An Election Year Prayer

from the Faithful Witness of Catholics in the United States
by his Eminence Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature O Lord Jesus Christ, You alone are the Way, the Truth and the Life. In Your church You show us the Way. You teach us the Truth, and You give us Your Life. Grant, we humbly beg You, that, always and in all things, we may be faithful to You in Your Holy Church and to Your Vicar on Earth, the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI. Grant also, we beg You, that, in these times of decision, all who profess to be Catholic and who are entrusted with the sacred duty to participate in public life, may by the strength of Your grace, unwaveringly follow Your Way and faithfully adhere to Your Truth, living in You with all their mind and heart, for Your greater glory, the salvation of souls, and the good of our nation. Amen. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, Pray for us. Saint Thomas More, Patron of Religious Freedom. Pray for us. The Church is your hope the Church is your salvation. I am delighted to announce that three of our parishioners and an alumnus of our Academy are being honored by the Boy Scouts of America, Patriots Path Council. On October 25th, Dr. Mitch Erickson, Mrs. Rosemary Murphy, Mr. Mickey Allocco and Mr. Kevin Carroll were honored at the Inaugural New Providence Good Scout Award Dinner being held at The Primavera Regency in Stirling, New Jersey. These wonderful people have been chosen as honorees because of their outstanding community service and leadership. They are well respected and we are certainly proud of them. The parish community congratulates each of the honorees for their service to our community and being exemplary role models for us and our youth. When you see them, please congratulate them personally. They so deserve this honor.

Saturday, October 20th following the 5:00 p.m. Mass and Sunday, October 21st following all the Masses in the Parish Hall. This Rosary Altar Society Bake Sale will feature a array of homemade temptations that you can give into. We ask that bakers bring their no nut treats (due to allergies) to the Parish Hall between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m. on October 20th. Please bake and purchase items to support this event.

We continue to experience a reduction in the use of envelopes along with a decline in attendance at Sunday Mass. Our Collections for the 1st quarter of the new Church year beginning July 1, 2012, resulted in a decline of 3 % in revenue over the comparable period, one year ago. Please prayerfully consider whether your current means allow increased support for Our Lady of Peace Church Fr. Bill

The Introductory Rites of the Mass

The Sign of the Cross, The Greeting, The Confiteor, The Kyrie, The Gloria, The Collect The Sign of the Cross: a powerful prayer, whose meaning, when understood, opens us to the spiritual treasures God offers us each time we sign ourselves. The sign of the cross is an ancient Christian tradition understood as a source of divine power and protection. In making this sign, we invoke Gods presence and ask Him to bless us, assist us, and guard us from all harm. By the mark of the cross traced over their bodies, Christians are protected, distinguished from what is corrupt in the world, and committed to live according to Christs example. In the name. . . For the Hebrews and ancient Christians, a name was more than a form of address. A name mysteriously represents the essence, nature, reputation, history of a person. When Moses asks the name of the voice in the burning bush, he does not want to know how to address the voice, he wants to understand what manner of being the voice is WHO HE IS!! Beginning Mass In the name of. . . is an invocation of the divine essence, presence and power of the Trinitarian God. We should always make the sign of the cross slowly, carefully, and with great care and attention and respect for its power. The Greeting: The Lord be with you expresses the profound reality of Gods life dwelling within our souls by virtue of our baptism. Throughout Scripture, the promise that the Lord will be with you guarantees access to a higher power that offers support through the trials and challenges of life. The greeting asks for Gods blessing as we approach the awesome reality of the mystery of Christs death and resurrection celebrated in the Eucharist. The response, and with your spirit acknowledges the mysterious workings of the Holy Spirit in the priest during the liturgy by virtue of his ordination. The Confiteor: Mass is nothing less than a sacred encounter with God. We know we are not worthy of this profound communion with the divine, so we prepare ourselves by humbly confessing, to God and to our brothers and sisters. In my thoughts, in my words, in what I have done, and what I have failed to do. . . these words function as an examination of conscience. Although penitential in nature, The Confiteor is not a substitute for Confession and does not absolve mortal sin. The Kyrie: Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy. . . Biblical mercy is not just dont punish me! In the gospels, people asking Jesus for his mercy were pleading for healing and help in their lives. The Kyrie, then, is an expression not only of repentance, but also of petition, a cry for Gods assistance in our lives. FYI: In Biblical numerology, three always refers to the divine and two suggests humanity, or society in general. Thus, the format of the Kyrie adds extra levels of meaning, suggesting the commingling of the divine with the human community. We will encounter the triple repetition several times in the Mass. The Gloria: The tone of the liturgy shifts from sorrowful repentance to joyful praise. The very opening phrase of this prayer echoes the song of the angels announcing the birth of Jesus to the shepherds, a fitting association since, in a sense, every Mass makes present the mystery of Christmas once again. The Gloria is a Trinitarian prayer, praising God the Father, His only Son and the Holy Spirit. The Collect: The Introductory Rites conclude with a prayer that gathers the intentions of the people participating in the Mass.
