The Hubbard Legacy

And the Beat Goes On 2012

Willie Frances (Hubbard) Funderburk October 5, 2012 Edition I

The Hubbard Legacy

Our ancestry reaps as many questions as answers. For a long time I have spent numerous hours working on my mothers side of the equation, but for this reunion, I felt it fit and proper to share some of the things that I have uncovered on the Hubbard side. This document will deal exclusively with the answers and questions that we will have about our legacy. I have included actual records from the census bureau and other governmental agencies, including Social Security and Death Records to document some of my findings. Some of the conclusions are based on the dates and ages of the family members. Many of the names have been misspelled in the official records, so I will spend some time making those corrections, so that those coming after me will have an easier time putting the story together. We start this legacy is 1870, with the census takers visiting the home of Richard Hubbard in Newton County, Texas. Per the records, he is listed as white male, with 5 females and 1 male living with him. According to the records, Louisa was keeping house (housekeeper or lady of the house), while no relationship was provide for the other females and the one male, Isaac, who was 10 at that time. In 1880, when the census takers made their way through Newton County, we find Richard Hubbard (we believe him to be one and the same, as two of the females are still with him, as well as Isaac). Richard is now listed as black, with all of the other information remaining the same. We are aware that many of our ancestors seriously believed that they were white, until some information came down to quell those beliefs. In many cases, it was because they looked the part and no one had ever told them. This must have been a serious blow at that time, because it looks like Richard Hubbard had continued to maintain a group of people who may have worked as field and house workers, even after slavery had ended. Of course, if you follow what he said in 1880, at least two of the children were his children. Now for those of you who dont know, it was very common for white men to father children by black women and never claim them as their children. In fact, it was uncommon when a white father stepped up and claimed the child as his own. The reason for all of the hues in our race is the fact that there were many interracial relationships without the claims.

1870 Note: Richard is a white male

Louisa, Nettie, Matilda and Harriett are removed from the Richard Hubbard household without explanation. There may have been some illness that caused these members to leave or Richard and Louisa were house mates, who decided

to dissolve their relationship and she took those people who were related to her with her. In 1880, he lists himself as the childrens father and Ellen is listed as the mother. In all probability, Ellen was neither Isaac or Susans mother, but were Richards children. I hope these additional names give you enough clues, so that you may engage in some research of your own. Just keep in mind that it is hard tracing females, because they lose their maiden names when they marry. The females will be researched for a later edition.

I believe this record should have read Eli Hubbard, Garcey Hubbard, Bertha Hubbard, and Casit Hubbard. I found Uncle Garcey World War I Registration card, so I know he lived to be grown, but could find nothing else on him. I found Uncle Connie and Uncle Hobby, who were twins in boarding houses at age 17, but found no marriage record for Uncle Hobby. He was married to Sadie Thomas, Clinton Thomas sister and Eloise Bryants aunt. Uncle Hobby had one son named Edward Lee Strahan. I have found nothing on Aunt Bertha. I can tell you that she had a daughter named Ernestine Hubbard, who had a daughter named Alice Hubbard to whom, Ursula and I were very close. I can also tell you that she had one of the first cars around. When Willie Hubbard, Sr. was a boy, Aunt Bertha came to town in her A-Model car and let Grandpa Cat drive it. I understand that he ran over some of everything. It made for a pretty funny joke

Information on Aunt Eunice is sparse. She is the mother of Curtis and Roy Jenkins. Records show that she married Mr. George Lewis, at one time. At that time Roy was 18 and Curtis was 17. Roy and Aunt Eunice are deceased, but Curtis resides in Orange. Roy married Wilma and their children are Evelyn, Gwen and Roy Jr. Evelyn and Roy Jr. are both deceased. Gwen resides in Pearland, Texas. Roy, Jr. has three children, April, Roy III, and Kevin. April resides in Pearland and is name April Sibley. Both Trey and Kevin resides in Maryland. I found no marriage record for Uncle Garcey or Uncle Noah. Uncle Noah was married to Aunt Ella. They had no children. 1910 Census

1920 Census Records show that Uncle Connie married a person named Nora. Further investigation shows that Nora was Nora Thomas, Aunt Sadie (Uncle Hobbys

wifes sister). They did indeed have a daughter named Maysel (not sure if spelling is correct). They moved to California, where Maysel died, but she had a daughter named Pat, who has contact with Mary Kings sister Irma. I will gather more information on this one and pass it on.

This is but the tip of the iceberg to get us started in identifying who we are. Theres quite a bit of information here, but there is so much more to be gathered. If you will notice, I did not get into the children past the Senior Hubbards children.

I will gather updates and provide them to the updates to this document. I have called this Edition I and each of the updates that follow will give an updated Edition Number. The Edition will aid the recipient in keeping up with the additional information that either of us are able to provide.
