Questions 33 40 Read the passage below carefully. Then, answer the questions that follow. Pottery is one the oldest art forms. This art has been practised in all parts of the world. Pottery began as ancient people struggled to find ways to cook, store and carry water, but went on to a form of art as people began creating vases and dishes for decorative uses. There are three major types of pottery which are earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Each of them have their own characteristics on clay mixture and temperature when baking and firing. Earthenware is a pottery clay mixture that is fired at a lower temperature which allows the use of colourful glazes but it can crack and chip off more easily than any other type. Stoneware pottery is made of a heavier clay mixture that gives it greater strength because it has been fired at a higher temperature. Porcelain is made from koalin, a fine white clay that is mixed with controlled amounts of feldspar and then fired at a low temperature. It is the purest and the most delicate type of pottery. Pottery making is classified into two categories i.e easy and hard. The easy pottery is when the object is shaped with wet clay first and then hardened by baking. It includes both decorative and practical items such as bowls, vases, dishes and lamps. For the harder types, it is made of baked clay. It includes valuable works of art, inexpensive dinnerware, vases and other simple household items which are made by professional potters. Pottery making involves four steps. Dear Jamil, I was shocked to discover that a good friend of mine is down with dengue fever. So, I decided to pay him a visit in the hospital. Armed with a packet of grapes, I made my way to the ward. I was shocked as I saw some of the residents from my neighbourhood in the same ward. Obviously, they too were down with dengue fever. I spoke to my father who is the chairman of the Happy Gardens Residents Association about the dengue menace. He called the residents for a meeting that night. The residents agreed to have a cleanliness campaign to rid the residential area of the Aedes mosquito which is the carrier of the dengue fever. That Saturday morning, the residents worked together to clear the area of receptacles that can store water. This is because the mosquitoes lay eggs in clean and stagnant water. Some of the residents cleared the weeds and dried leaves that clogged the drain. Some men cut the grass and cleared broken pots as they are excellent breeding grounds. That night, a health inspector gave a talk on how to avoid the dengue fever. He reminded us that the mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk. So, he reminded us to close our windows and doors at these times. He also asked us to spray insecticide at this time to kill the existing mosquitoes in the house. We were also reminded to lit mosquito coils to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Another good suggestion will be to sleep under a mosquito net. Well, I hope that you will adhere to these tips to keep the menacing dengue fever at bay. Lillian Write a summary on how to keep dengue fever at bay. Your summary must: not be more than 60 words, including the 10 words given below be in continuous writing be written in one paragraph Begin your summary as follows: You can keep dengue fever at bay by destroying breeding

Just yesterday, a lady driver with a child on board had a scare of her life when a group of teenage motorcyclists surrounded her car. They hurled stones at the car, breaking the rear mirror. They grabbed her handbag and took out her cash and cell phone. They even threatened to harm the child if she did not give her jewellery. They reminded her not to lodge a police report if she treasured her childs life. 3. I urge you to investigate this matter urgently as the lives of the residents of this residential area are at stake. It was a tradition that every Saturday, the farmer would go for his lunch at a nearby inn. The dog would join the master for lunch at the inn. He was amazed to see the faithful dog making a beeline towards the graveyard. It placed the bone near John Grays grave and sat lovingly beside it. The inn owner was touched by the dogs faithfulness towards its master. As winter was fast approaching, the inn owner decided to make a shelter for the dog near its masters grave. But it is used in soups, sauces and ketchup, and in many other ways in the main part of the meal. So, for purposes of trade, the Supreme Court in 1893 classified the tomato as a vegetable! The tomato originated in its wild form in South America in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia. Long before Columbus went to the new world, cultivated forms of the tomato had already been developed in Mexico. With perseverance, it is possible to materialize your noble intentions. Firstly, you have to ensure that you give your undivided attention to the lesson in the classroom. Avoid sitting in a place where students are not paying attention. You may be distracted by the noise. So, either change your desk or complain to the teacher. Also, establish a good rapport with your teachers and meet up with them in the staffroom to clarify any queries. Then, you need to reinforce your lesson by completing the assigned homework. The Environment Day The Environment Club organized an Environment Day last Saturday, 25 September 2010 at school. The aim is to raise

awareness on conserving the environment. Three major activities were held for this purpose. They are Recycling Booth, Hot Air Balloon Ride and Adopt a Tree Programme. Two weeks prior to the programme, notices pertaining to the Environment Day were pasted all around town and residential areas. The residents were encouraged to bring along old paper, aluminium cans and glass bottles for the recycling programme. A recycling booth was erected at the school gate. As the residents entered the gate, they handed in their recycling items. The booth was opened from 8 am to 6 pm. This programme was a big success as the residents handed in heaps of recycled items. The most popular activity on this day is the hot air balloon ride at the school field. There was a long queue for this ride although it was expensive. Each ride was priced at RM30 per ride. As there was great demand, the rides were on first come first serve basis. The ride lasted for 10 hours from 7 am to 5 pm.
The Adopt a Tree Programme was popular amongst families.

Throngs of families made their way here and adopted a tree for only RM50. The family members worked together to help grow the tree behind the school compound. There was laughter and giggles as families planted their trees. This activity began from 9 am to 5 pm. On the whole, the Environment Day was successful. It is hoped that the Environment Day can be made into an annual programme.

The short story One is One and All Alone by Nicholas Fisk is about the protagonist, Trish, who while on board a spaceship, clones herself to have a friend of her age as company. However, things turn sour when the clone decides to take over Trishs life. The character I adore in this short story is Trish. I adore her because she is matured, intelligent and resourceful. Trish, although on board a spaceship to Trion, displays the same characteristics as any 11-year-old. Like any other children her age, she misses her parents who are scientists in the field of space exploration. In fact, she longs for their care and attention. Sadly, her mother is away in Trion setting up the space station on Trion while her father is the Executive Officer of the ship. Thus, Trish is constantly left on her own. However, unlike other children who lack parental attention, she is not a spoilt brat. Instead, she keeps to herself most of the time and spends time with her best friend the voice printer. I adore her because although she yearns for her parents, she realizes that they have heavy responsibilities at work. Thus, she is understanding and does not throw tantrums on demand her parents attention. I adore her because not many children her age show such maturity. Secondly, I adore her because she is intelligent as she learns very quickly. This is seen when she learns the techniques of cloning very quickly from the Voice Printer. In fact, she is so quick that not only is she able to understand such scientific concepts at such a tender age but she is also able to apply it! Thus, with her intelligence, she is able to clone herself and have company. Her clone, Clo, is an identical twin created by Trish on her own at the spaceship in the BioLab. It is obvious that she is intelligent as only scientists are able to apply the concept of cloning and they have undergone tertiary education and training. However, Trish who is only 11, is able to apply this abstract technology that involves DNA and other scientific concepts that will boggle the mind of any child. Thus, I adore her because she is intelligent and does not ply time like a regular 11 year old who may spend time playing online games or chatting on the Facebook. Finally, I adore Trish as she is resourceful and does not fret in the face of adversities. For example, when she yearns for company her age, she does not bother her father or even the Voice Printer. Instead, she learns the techniques of cloning and clones herself. This shows how resourceful she is she is able to apply the technology she has learnt from the Voice Printer at the BioLab in the spaceship. Similarly, when things go awry between her and Clo, she does not tell anyway of her problem. Once again, she relies on herself to solve the problem. She hatches a plan to get rid of Clo but she is unsuccessful. What I adore about Trish is her ability to rely on herself instead of troubling others about her problem. Most 11-

year-olds will come crying to their parents over petty matters but not Trish who is so resourceful. It is sad that Trish eventually dies in the hands of her own creation. Hence, I like Trish because she is not like a regular 11year-old who whines when faced with a problem. Instead, I find her very resourceful as she solves her own problems. Section B Question 1 (a) Pollution and traffic jams (b) It is money is your new gold. (c) Humans need for advanced development has led to the rape of the forests that accelerates pollution and the depletion of the ozone layer contributing to global warming. Question 2 The drama Rumpelstiltskin by Angela Lanyon is about a young girl whose parents brag that she is able to spin straw into gold. The news reaches the King who promises to reward her if she is able to spin straw into gold. A lesson I have learnt is the importance of being honest. The importance can be seen in three incidents her parents lying to the King that she can spin straw into gold, Lisas promising her first born child to the strange little man and the disappearing of the strange man after Lisa is able to state his name. Honesty is indeed a great virtue. We should never lie lest we get into trouble. Lisas parents are so unlike her. She is such a humble person but her parents are braggers and they brag that she can bake the best pies in town and worst still, spin straw into gold. Of course, the rational mind can never accept this as it is an impossible feat. Yet, her parents brag that she can do the impossible especially in front of the King. This statement reached the ears of the King who is facing financial crisis. Thus, he puts Lisa to the test. He demands that she spins all the given straw into gold or her head will be cut off. The poor girl knows she is unable to do so and she sits and cries expecting the worst. But lucky for her, her honesty pays off as she is a mere victim of her insensible parents bragging. A strange man appears and promises to spin all the straw into gold in exchange for her necklace. She agrees. The next morning, Lisa is surprised to see all the straw spun into gold. 59

Section A A very good morning I bid to the Principal, teachers and

fellow friends. As the President of the Health Club, I would like to inform you of the Tapah Town Run 2010 which will be held next Saturday, 18 September 2010. It is held at the Tapah Town council field and will begin at 8 am. The aim of the run is to raise awareness among students on the importance of good health. As we all know, the issue of obesity is plaguing the younger generation today. Thus, the town council has decided on the run to create awareness on the importance of good health. All students, males and females, can participate in this run as it is opened to all students aged 13 and above. In fact, the students are categorized into two categories. The first category

As she is honest, she gives the necklace to the man. Indeed, she kept her words and did not deceive the old man. Indeed, honesty pays. The following day is another example of how honesty pays off. When the King sees the gold, he is impressed. However, he is not satisfied as it is the nature of human beings to be greedy. Thus, he takes Lisa to a bigger room with more straw to be spun into gold and issues the same warning to turn the straw into gold or to have her head cut off! That night the man appears again and agrees to spin the straw into gold if Lisa gives the ring to him. As the night before, the man spins the straw into gold and the honest Lisa gives him the ring as they have agreed on. The man leaves and Lisa is happy. This is yet another example of how important honesty is and we should honour our promises. When the greedy King sees the gold, he becomes even greedier. This time he takes her to an even bigger room filled with straw. As usual, he demands that she spins all the straw into gold or have her head cut off. This time he promises her that he will marry her if she is able to spin all the straw into gold. Now, Lisa is worried as she has nothing to give the strange man for spinning the straw into gold. However, they come to a decision that she would give her first born child to the strange man. Lisa readily agrees. The strange man honestly keeps his word and spins all the straw into gold. The king, too, is honest as he marries Lisa. This shows how important it is to keep to our words and not lie to someone as it may have negative repercussions. However, things become sour if we do not keep to our words and may cause grievances. This can be seen in the case of Lisa after her marriage. She has a blissful marriage and the King is good to her and most importantly, they are blessed with a beautiful bundle of joy a baby boy. She is so elated in her happy life that she has forgotten her promise to the strange old man. But, the man remembers and comes for her son soon after, much to Lisas disappointment. She refuses to let her baby go and pleads with the man to not take her baby. This is not fair of Lisa as she is being dishonest a promise is a promise! Lisa is very selfish as when she is in trouble, she seeks the mans help and he does help her out. However, when things are rosy for her, she forgets her promise. This kind of behavior is not done! Nonetheless, the kind man gives her the opportunity to state his name within three days. This goes to prove that the strange man has a heart of gold as he is still willing to give her a second chance. Thus, I find the strange man commendable as he is still willing to give her a second chance although Lisa is denying him his right out rightly. With the help of her parents, Lisa manages to state his name correctly on the third day, much to the annoyance of the man. Nevertheless, he keeps to his words and left Lisa and the child 60

and never bothered them again. This goes to show how sincere and honest the man is. The lesson I have learnt is that honesty really pays. Through her honesty, Lisa is a queen and the mother of a cute baby prince. She is also honest in seeking out the mans name and is rewarded when she is able to keep her son away from the man. The man is also honest in his dealings because if he had not help Lisa, she would never have been a queen nor bore a prince. Also, when Lisa is able to state his name, the man kept to his word and never came back to their lives again. Indeed, honest pays and this should be the principle of our lives.

Section A Pak Mat is a fisherman who lives with his family of three in a fishing village. The weather has been very rough as it was the monsoon season. Hence, he had to stay at home. He spent his time mending fishing nets.

However, things are difficult. He has very little savings and it was difficult to make ends meet. Bills were amounting and there was little food to eat. So, he made up his mind to go to sea to catch some fish to sell and earn some money for the family. When he told his wife of his decision, she was very upset. She feared for his safety but he reassured her that it was safe for him to go to sea. The next day, he left for sea at dawn. Although it was still raining, Pak Mat was determined to go to sea. Armed with the nasi lemak his wife had packed for him, he started his boat and left the shore. Meanwhile, his worried wife went home. She was anxious about her husbands safety. She walked to the window and watched as the heavy rain pounded the window panes. She could hear the wind howling and she could imagine the waves crashing angrily against her husbands humble boat. Tears flow down her cheeks. She quickly wiped them with the back of her hand and decided to be optimistic. However, in some deep corner of her mind, the fear still remained. The hours dragged slowly as dusk approached. The rain had not relented and it was falling in full strength. At dusk, she took her children and went to the shore. They brought umbrellas and baskets for the catch. Her heart raced as she walked hurriedly to the shore. She peered through the heavy shower to catch sight of her husbands boat. However, she was in for a disappointment. She paced the ground as time ticked away. She looked at the horizon and saw a dark object bobbing up and down. Her spirit lifted as she saw her husbands boat reaching the shore. She fell to the ground and thanked God for his safety.

Question 2 The drama Rumpelstiltskin by Angela Lanyon is about a young

girl whose parents brag that she is able to spin straw into gold. The news reaches the King who promises to reward her if she is able to spin straw into gold. Soon, the King marries her and they are blessed with a son. The event I think is important in this event is when Lisa promises the strange man to give him her first born child in exchange for spinning a large room of straws into gold. I find this scene important as it reflects human nature. When in desperation, a human will agree to almost anything, even something close to the heart. Lisa is desperate as she knows she is unable to spin the straw into gold and if she does not do 61

so, the King will cut her head off. So, she is indeed desperate. Thus, when the strange man suggests she gives him her first born child, she readily agrees as she does not want to die. Besides, the King has promised to marry her if she is able to spin the straw into gold. Now, which poor girl will not jump to such a proposal? It is something that does not happen to anyone! Thus, Lisa agrees without realizing how difficult it would be to give up the baby after carrying it for nine months. As any normal human being, she is only thinking of the present, which is to escape the gallows and to become the queen. Thus, I find this event important as it reflects human nature where we would agree to anything as long as we are able to get out of this sticky situation, as the saying goes, a drowning man clutches to a straw. Secondly, I find this event interesting as it shows yet another faade of human nature the opportunist. When someone is in trouble and turns to someone else for trouble, the one who helps out takes the upper hand and demands what they want. In this case when Lisa is in trouble and seeks help from the strange man, the man takes the opportunity to demand something in return her first born child. Indeed, he is a leech as he is taking extreme advantage of her as she is in hot soup. Instead of sympathizing with her dilemma, he takes the opportunity to twist her arm. He demanded for her first born and the poor Lisa who is in deep trouble readily agrees. I find this event important as it reflects the reality of life as there are vultures out there that prey on those who are in trouble. One good example is the loan shark who takes advantage of those who are financially in trouble. Thus, when the borrower is unable to pay back, the loan sharks go to all extremes to get back their money even killing the borrower or his family member. Hence, this event is important as it is a true reflection of the greed of humankind. Thirdly, I find this event important as it reflects another facet of humankind the tyrant. The King is abusing his authority on his poor subject who has already in the past spun two large rooms of straw into roomfuls of gold. Instead of being grateful, the King subjects his poor subject to yet another large roomful of straw that has to been spun into gold. He even threatens to cut her head off if she fails to do so. I find this rather annoying as the King is extorting the poor girl for his worldly pleasures. By right, a king should protect his subject from abuses and extortion but here the King is taking advantage of the frightened girl. I find this event important as it is a true portrayal of human nature where the strong take advantage of the weak and it is even depicted politically where the advanced countries manipulate the weaker countries and rob them of their natural resources to make high profits from themselves. The poor subjects of the country provide cheap labour and live in poor conditions while the richer nations reap

high rates of profits. This is why I fine this event important as it portrays the reality of life. I find this event important as it depicts the evil nature of humankind. It is human nature to oppress the poor and the weak and it is well portrayed in this event.

hefty sum of money to ensure their children achieve outstanding results. So, parents shove their children for tuition to ensure they succeed in education. The second most important reason why parents send their children for tuition is to avoid undesirable activities such as loitering, vandalism and gangsterism. As we know, juvenile delinquency is on the rise as more and more juveniles are engaged in social ills. Therefore, to ensure their children are not involved with bad hats, 30% of the parents pack them up to tuition centres. Indeed, this move kills two birds with one stone. They are away from social ills and are using their time effectively to pursue a better future. Finally, 25% of the parents are too busy with their careers to spare time for their childrens education. So, they send their children for tuition to ensure they receive the necessary attention in education. Obviously, this is a win-win situation for the parents as they do not have to give up their careers and at the same time ensure their childrens studies are not neglected. The results of the survey show that parents view tuition as essential as 45% of them cite excellence in education as the main reason for sending their children for tuition. The fear of their children getting involved in undesirable activities has led 30% of the families to pack them off for tuition. 25% of the parents realize they have no time to spend on their childrens education, so they compensate by sending them for tuition. Section A The pie-chart shows reasons why the parents of Form 3 Maju send their children for tuition. The survey was conducted among 38 students of this class. Most parents, that is 45% of them, send their children for tuition as they want them to excel in their education. As we all know, our education system is exam-oriented. Thus, to keep up with the paper chase, parents pressure their children to obtain strings of As. Thus, it is not surprising to find students who obtain 21 As. As expected, this trend thrust the benchmark in education even higher. Therefore, to ensure their children are not left behind, parents are willing to part with a 62

Fisk is about the protagonist, Trish, who while on board a spaceship, clones herself to have a friend of her age as company. However, things turn sour when the clone decides to take over Trishs life. I like the ending of the story as it is a slap to humankind who is so obsessed with playing God. I like the ending because in the end Trish realizes that her clone, Clo, is nothing but an irritant. Trish who is an only child aboard the spaceship to planet Trion, decides to clone herself in attempt to have a playmate of her age. Currently, the only playmate she has is the VoicePrinter, VP, which is an intelligent computer. Using the readily available technology in the BioLab of the spaceship, she clones herself successfully and brings forth Clo, an identical twin. Initially all goes well until Trish gets annoyed with Clo who irritates her by copying whatever she does and says. Hence, Trish decides to dispose

off Clo only to have Clo dispose of her first. I find this conclusion apt as it is a big blow to mankind who are so obsessed of using science and technology to clone human beings. I strongly advocate that God is the only force that has the right to bring forth a life into this world. This is because no two creations of God are identical enough to read into each others minds. Thus, we have the privacy of our thoughts. Now with the clone, Trish is deprived of her personal thoughts and thus whatever she thinks is easily intercepted by Clo. Thank God, we are unable to read each others minds as we will not have the rights to our private thoughts. Thus, I find the ending apt as it reminds mankind of the dangers of cloning as this field is relatively new and we are not aware of the dangers of cloning. Worse still if clones can be destructive, we are in hot soup as we will not be able to distinguish the clones from the human beings. Thus, we may be at the mercy of the clones or worse still as in Trishs case, killed by our clones. Another reason I like the ending is because it acts as a reminder that an idle mind is a devils workshop. As we know, Trish is bored so she overcomes her boredom and need for human companionship by creating a clone of herself. This is a wake-up call for parents who often leave their children at home on their own. They never know what their children are up to. It is very dangerous as we do not know whom they may befriend or get into illicit activities that may get them into trouble with the law. We have heard of delinquent adolescents involved in premarital sex, baby dumping, road thugs, vandalism and bullying. With technology advancement, we have social predators and paedophiles that prey on bored children and teens looking for excitement. This leads to problems such as rapes, extortions and even drug mules. Thus, I like the ending as it reminds parents that they should always keep an eye on their children to avoid falling prey to such predators or getting involved in the law lest they end up in jail. In the end, Trish fall prey to her own invention, Clo, who turned the tables against Trish and pushed her out of the hatch used as a disposal system. Finally, I like the ending as it reminds parents that their love, care and attention cannot be replaced by money or electronic gadgets. As Trishs parents are so obsessed with their work, they leave her alone with an electronic gadget, VP, to keep her company. They do not realize that the gadget can never replace human care and attention. Thus, we find Trish yearning for parental love and a playmate. It is not just Trishs parents who are in this predicament. Most parents who are caught in the materialistic web substitute their bonding time with their children with electronic gadgets, just like Trishs parents. Thus, its not surprising to find a family at a table in a restaurant not talking to each other as they are busy with their mobile phones, either chatting or surfing the Internet. In the past, meal times are the times when families sit together and 63

talk face-to-face, discussing family issues and problems. This practice has eroded with the advancement of science and technology as valuable bonding time has been replaced by modern technology. Thus, we find family ties eroding as divorces happen rampantly and more and more senior citizens are left at old folks homes as technology has created selfcentred individuals. Hence, in the ending, we find that Trish is killed by her own invention and the parents have a clone as a daughter and the scientific parents will not know the difference.
Section C There are a few things to look out for when choosing a fish.

Firstly, a fresh fish has its eyes intact with a shiny cornea and visible eyeballs. Also, the gill should be firm and when lifted, it reveals a slimy and well formed gill. A fresh fish is firm and has firm fins, tails and scales. (58 words)

Question 2 The drama Rumpelstiltskin by Angela Lanyon is about a

young girl whose parents brag that she is able to spin straw into gold. The news reaches the King who promises to reward her if she is able to spin straw into gold. Soon, the King marries her and they are blessed with a son. The drama has a very odd title Rumplestiltskin but I think it is appropriate. I find the title appropriate as it is as odd as the subject matter itself. Firstly, I find it odd that the parents can actually brag about the impossible that their daughter can spin straw into gold. This is definitely an impossible feat as rationally, straw and gold are two different entities with different properties and mass. So, how can straw which is so light and feeble be transformed into gold, which is hard and heavy? Besides, there is a vast difference between the prices of straw and gold. So, how can we compare straw and gold at same level? So, obviously something is not right. It seems very far-

fetched. Thus, I find the title appropriate as it makes no sense as the conversion of straw to gold. Secondly, I find the title apt as I find it rather odd that a woman can promise to give away her first born child to a strange man who is able to transform straw into gold. A mother is always so protective over her child and will never give her child to a strange looking person who looks more like a gnome that a human being. It just does not agree with the rational mind. Even animals will protect their children against predators. Thus, it seems irrational that a woman can even think of giving away her first born child after carrying it for nine laborious months to a stranger that even she is not comfortable with. So, I find this rather odd because even a cat will fight tooth and nail to keep her kittens. Based on this oddity, I think the title is apt as it odd, as odd as the thought of giving up ones new born baby to a strange looking man that looks more like a gnome than a human. Finally, the title Rumpelstiltskin is actually the name of this strange man who looks like a gnome. I think he must be a character from the fairytales, so that name Rumpelstiltskin which happens to be title of the story is apt. Besides, he has an odd ability he is able to spin straw into gold! Now which human with a common name like Tom, Dick and Harry has this odd but commendable ability of changing straw into gold? None! No human being is blessed with such a feat. Thus, this character is odd and thus the odd name Rumpelstiltskin is apt for the title as it depicts his strange character. I think the title Rumpelstitskin is appropriate for this drama as it depicts some oddities of the character whose name is Rumpelstiltskin such as the ability to spin straw into gold and the physical appearance which looks like a gnome. I also find the willingness of the protagonist to give up her first born baby as something odd as no mother especially a first time mother would do such a thing. thus, based on these oddities, the odd name Rumpelstiltskin is appropriate for the drama. Section C You can relieve a backache by three simple methods. Firstly, sleep on a firm bed and sleep on your side. If you sleep on your back, use a contour pillow to keep the back straight. Secondly, use a backpack to spread the weight of the bag. Finally, lift heavy objects with bent knees to avoid the stress on the back. (60 words)

sizable amount of money for the upkeep of the pet. This seems such a waste of good money as the cost of living is soaring. Hence, it seems practical not to keep pets and instead use the money to provide a comfortable life for the family. I personally think keeping a pet is a mere waste of time and precious money. The time and money can be used to spend quality time and bond with family members. Section B Question 1

Question 2 The short story One is One and All Alone by Nicholas

Disadvantages of Keeping Pets The child kept howling as his mother hugged him tightly.

The child watched with tears flooding his cheek as his father buried the dog in the garden. The little boy could not accept the fact that his favourite dog, Shaggy, is dead. He refused to eat or play and kept crying. This is a typical scene when a child loses a pet. It is not easy to come to terms with a dead pet. Much has been said about the advantages of keeping pets. This is because children learn the values of being responsible and practical. However, losing a pet can leave psychological wounds that may never heal. This is due to the fact that the emotional bond with the animal is so strong that there is a vacuum in the childs life. The child is disturbed and may take a long time to overcome the loss. Some children even go through depression when they lose their pets and it is an uphill task to detach themselves from the dead pet. Thus, keeping a pet may lead a child into depression at a young age. Besides, it is unsafe to keep pets as they may be carriers of disease. As we are all aware of, the avian flu or commonly known as the bird flu is transmitted by birds. This is bad news for bird lovers as the deadly flu can be transmitted to them by their own pets! This is indeed scary! Younger children who have a lower immunity system than adults are susceptible to this disease and the healing process is long. Therefore, it makes sense not to keep pets for this purpose. Finally, keeping a pet may prove to be expensive. Keeping a pedigree pet costs a fortune. Buying a pup or kitten costs a few thousands of ringgit. The bill starts amounting as these pets need special diets and grooming. It is undeniably true that pedigree pets need essential nutrients and vaccinations to keep them in tip-top condition. Thus, the owner has to keep aside a 65

Fisk is about the protagonist, Trish, who while on board a spaceship, clones herself to have a friend of her age as company. However, things turn sour when the clone decides to take over Trishs life. Technology plays a great part in this story and has adverse effects to the protagonist, Trish. Firstly, technology is the reason why Trish is deprived of her parental love. As both her parents are scientists delving in the realms of technology, they are so obsessed in exploring the space that they have no time to be with their child. Her mother is in Trion at the space workstation while her father is the Executive Officer on board the spaceship. With such heavy responsibilities, it is not surprising that they have no time to spend with their one and only child. Hence, Trish is always by herself. It is even sadder as Trish is still a growing child and normally the parents have a great influence in a childs life. A regular child will turn to his parents when they are happy upset, sick or depressed. It is heartbreaking that this child is unable to be with her parents during her formative years as her parents are busy exploring the space brought about by advance technology. Secondly, because of technology, Trish is denied her human playmates. This is because she has to remain with her parents who are assigned to planet Trion. As a result, she will have to remain in the spaceship for two whole years before she can reach Trion and then spends some years there. Thus, there is no place for playmates in her childhood life as she will be thirteen when she reaches Trion. So, to substitute their absence and the absence of a playmate, Trish is given a technological playmate, VoicePrinter or commonly known as VP. VP doubles as her tutor and playmate. Although VP is an intelligent computer, it can never replace a human being. What Trish needs is a human playmate who has tantrums, can laugh and scream as this is part of a childs life. Hence, technology is responsible of depriving Trish of playmates.

Finally, technology is the reason why Trish has a shortlived life. As she is lonely and yearns for human contact, Trish decides to take the road not taken by children her age, she clones herself! This reminds us of the effect of technology as Trish is the offspring of scientists. Thus, she must have the streaks of a scientist and that propelled her to make a rash decision, a clone! A regular 11-year-old child will not go to such extremes as they have not as much exposure to technology as Trish has. Thus, with her technological knowledge and the availability of the BioLab, she clones herself. This is the danger of too much knowledge of technology. Alas, Trishs creation is indeed technologically created, thus she begins to read her creators mind and disposes of her creator before her creator gets to her. Thus, Trish dies a premature death because of her technological creation. Technology is indeed bad news for Trish as it is the reason she is deprived of parental care, love and attention as well as being denied a human playmate. Technology is bad news as it is responsible for Trishs death. This story is a stark reminder of the dangers of technology especially for proponents of technology.

yesterday evening. At 6 pm yesterday, the town was enveloped in dark clouds before heavy rains and strong winds lashed through the town. The huge volume of rain resulted in flash floods leaving the puzzled businessmen and customers stranded. Water rose quickly and most of the business operators had to close their business as they swiftly moved their merchandise to higher ground. The stranded customers sought refuge in restaurants as they awaited the storm to subside. The strong winds uprooted trees in several areas causing the trees to fall across roads. Consequently, many roads had to be closed to the public. This resulted in a massive traffic jam. Meanwhile, the roads that were opened to public came to a crawl when motorists had to move bumper-to-bumper. The storm subsided at midnight. However, the destruction was massive and losses were estimated at RM100, 000. The Town Municipal Council workers were seen working around the clock to clear the mess created by the storm.

young girl whose parents brag that she is able to spin straw into gold. The news reaches the King who promises to reward her if she is able to spin straw into gold. Soon, the King marries her and they are blessed with a son. The character that I think is courageous is Rumpelstilstkin. I think he is very courageous as he is able to walk into the palace grounds on his own without fearing the security at the palace. As we know, the security at a palace is indeed very tight and it is crawling with soldiers. But, here, we have a very brave and bold midget who looks like a gnome, coolly walking into the palace grounds without being noticed by the security, not just once but three days in a row! It is baffling how a little man who looks weird can go unnoticed in the palace grounds. But whats more amazing is he can walk into

the palace grounds and climb up the room in the tower without being caught! Even still, being a midget, he must have difficulty scaling the tower but he seems to be okay with it as he is doing it three days in a row. Thus, I think he is courageous. Secondly, I think he is courageous in accepting the challenge of spinning the roomfuls of straws into gold, overnight! This is indeed a feat considering he is a midget. It is not easy to handle a spindle to spin the straw into gold but this courageous little man is able to do it three days consecutively. As we remember in the fairytale, Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger on the spindle and slept for a hundred years. So, this shows that one can actually prick ones finger on the spindle. Yet, this courageous strange looking man is able to do spin straw into gold with much ease. Obviously, he is\courageous enough to accept this challenge. Thus, I find him courageous. Finally, I find him courageous as he is able to walk into the palace ground to claim his reward the Queens first born child. He is neither afraid of the security nor the King to take away the prince. Now, no King would allow anyone to take his heir away but here we have a little man who is so courageous to walk up into the palace and into the nursery and demand the prince. Not many people would do that as they fear the Kings authority or the soldiers. If he is to be caught, he would definitely be sent to the gallows as the King has reminded Lisa that she would have her head cut off if she doesnt spin all the straw into gold. Thus, I think this little man is indeed courageous. I think Rumpelstiltskin is courageous as he walks boldly into the palace and is not afraid of the soldiers, the Queen or the King. PAPER 2 Section A I agree with Manan that women should not work. Instead, they should stay at home and raise their children. It is undoubtedly true that women do contribute positively to the economic growth. However, what are the consequences of working mothers on their children? From time immemorial, men have been the breadwinners and women took care of the family. This family had strong filial bonds and juvenile delinquencies among these children were minimal. However, with the shift of the womens traditional role, more and more women are involved in the working sector. Hence, they leave the upbringing of their children in the hands of aged grandparents or even worse, foreign maids. As the mothers successfully climb the ladder of success, the children are constantly neglected. Hence, these young adults are easily influenced by their peers who indulge in vices such as gangsterism, vandalism, loitering and bullying. Now, if the concerned mothers were at home, they will be able to know their children are beginning to get involved in vices, they can nip the delinquent children in the bud. Hence, it is crucial for mothers to be around especially when the children are growing up. Secondly, the mothers have a role in instilling moral values in their children. In the past, the mothers spend time with their children narrating stories with moral values. These young impressionable children yearn to listen to these stories. Unconsciously, the moral values are embedded in their lives from young. Hence, this positive contribution from the mothers have a lingering effect on the children. As the saying goes, the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world. Finally, a mother with her maternal instincts will be able to understand her childrens problems. With an understanding mother, the children can confide their problems in her or even cry over her warm and broad shoulders. Sadly, today the mothers are missing from homes as they abandon their aprons and don business suits. Whom should the children turn to in their times of despair and distress? Eventually, they turn to 67

their peers who lead them astray. Therefore, there is a gap between mothers and children. The gaps widen and slowly the children sink into a dark hole of no return. Therefore, the onus is on the mothers to shape their childrens future. After all, filial bond is of utmost importance especially in this material era. Thus, I strongly believe that women should not work. Section B Question 1
(a) An inquisitive child (b) They are God-fearing people who enjoy the simple luxuries in

life.
(c) This is because the inventors are lured by the excessive buying

power of consumers who are crazy for IT gadgets. Question 2 The short story One is One and All Alone by Nicholas Fisk is about the protagonist, Trish, who while on board a spaceship, clones herself to have a friend of her age as company. However, things turn sour when the clone decides to take over Trishs life. I think the setting is apt to the story as it is set on board a spaceship. Firstly, the theme of this story is cloning and thus it is only appropriate to have a lab where the cloning process can take place. Hence, we discover that the spaceship has a wellequipped lab as well as the materials required to facilitate cloning. Besides, there is also the VoicePrinter, VP, which provides the techniques of cloning. Thus, the spaceship is indeed conducive as it provides the procedure as well as the materials and place to carry out the cloning process. If the setting is based on earth, it is almost impossible for Trish to get access into the laboratory as it would be crawling with people as well as high-tech security. Hence, the setting, the spaceship, is indeed conducive to the plot of the story. Secondly, the setting is appropriate as the spaceship is quiet and there are no children except for Trish. This is appropriate as her loneliness and yearning for human contact that

propelled Trish to take the road not taken by most children, to clone herself. As the rest of the residents of the spaceship are busy at work, there is no one to keep an eye on Trish. Hence, she has the time and the place to carry out the cloning without being noticed by others. If the setting had been on earth, then there may not be a necessity for Trish to clone herself as she may have sufficient friends. Hence, the setting is suitable as it lacks the security that enables Trish to get access to the spaceships laboratory. Besides Trish, the setting is also suitable for Clo to take revenge on Trish who is hatching an idea to get rid of Trish. As the hatch of the space disposal system is easily available, it facilitates the task of disposing Trish. It is a simple task, open the hatch and push Trish down and Trish is disposed in space without a trace. Furthermore, Trishs parents will not miss her as Clo is there. Thus, the hatch is a perfect place to dispose Trish without a clue. And as the residents of the spaceship are engrossed in their tasks, there is no one to keep a watch on Trish. Thus, the setting is appropriate for disposing anything including Trish. Finally, the setting is appropriate as one of the themes of this story is space exploration. Hence, we find Trishs parents involved actively in this exploration. Trishs mum is already in Trion at the workstation whereas Trish and her father are aboard the space ship that will take them to Trion in three years. It will be utterly foolish to have the setting on earth as to explore space one has to be either on the way to space or already in space. Therefore, the setting is apt. The setting is appropriate with the theme of the story which are the dangers of cloning and space exploration. Hence we have the spaceship and planet Trion as the setting of this story. Section C Mobile phones are popular with people as they enable the users to be in touch with their loved ones at all times. It is also cheaper than using the regular phones as a text message costs only 10 cents. Finally it is small in size and so the user can manipulate it with a single hand. (56 words)
