COURSE SYLLABUS
The Health Science program identifies core knowledge and professional ethics essential to all healthcare learners/workers who pursue paths in diagnostic, therapeutic, environmental, and/or informational services. Students are introduced to the healthcare system and prepare them for acceptance in post-secondary healthcare education programs and/or employment in healthcare jobs. PROGRA M GOALS : Students will: 1. be better able to make a choice of a health occupation that he/she plans to pursue. 2. be competent as a general basic health assistant while utilizing classroom and laboratory experiences in specific health care facilities. 3. Acquire and apply appropriate professional and ethical behavior for the workplace. 4. Attain employability skills that promote employment opportunities and career growth. 5. Develop and maintain leadership skills through Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) 6. Become prepared for acceptance into post-secondary healthcare education programs and/or employment in the health care field.

COURSE TITLE: HEALTH SCIENCE Internship 652564


COURSE DESCRIPTION: Health Science Internship is a one or two-credit course designed for students in Grades 11 or 12. This course includes a variety of knowledge and skills necessary for becoming a health care worker or for preparing students for postsecondary health care education programs. Health Science Internship is designed to be completed in a hospital, extended care facility, rehabilitation center, medical office, imagery laboratory, or other health care facilities. The prerequisite(s) for the course is Foundations of Health Science and Therapeutic Services. Theory and laboratory components comprise at least ten percent of the Health Science Internship course.
COURS E GOALS : 1. To introduce students to career opportunities across the healthcare field. 2. To provide opportunities for students to shadow healthcare professionals, visit Health care facilities, and practice skills learned in the classroom. 3. To prepare students for entry-level jobs in the health care industry and/or post-secondary education 4. To provide employers with well-trained and competent workers.

AVA ILA BLE STUDEN T INDUS TRY CREDEN TIA L : Upon completion of the Foundations of Health, Therapeutic Services, and HST Internship classes, the student is eligible to take the Alabama Certified Nursing Assistant Test offered by NACES/Pearson Vue. INS TRUC TI ON A L PHILOS OPHY: Students will be expected to meet all course goals and demonstrate his/her understanding of each concept presented. Instruction will be application based with demonstration and lecture. Students will work independently to complete day-to-day assignments but may be required to work in groups or teams to complete special projects, skills, and/or lab activities. ATTENDAN CE: Class attendance is required in accordance with MCPSS policy. The roll will be called at the beginning of class. Punctuality is very important. Attentiveness to faculty and guests is required at all times.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: All written work must be concise, legible, and contain correct grammar and punctuation. Unacceptable papers will be returned to the student to be corrected, and the grade may be lowered at the instructors discretion. PLAGIARISM IS PROHIBITED! Students will be required to participate in oral presentations; students will be required to speak clearly with good diction and eye contact. Points will be deducted for inattentiveness to peer presentations. Students enrolled in this class must be able to demonstrate the skills, abilities, and attitudes necessary to pursue a career in the health care industry.

SKILLS LAB/PERFORMA N CE TES TS : All skills labs are a component of the content standards and attendance is required. A successful level of skill performance is required. Skills should be satisfactorily demonstrated to the instructor. The student will perform all skills under instructor supervision. CLA S S ROOM/LA B SAFETY & SECURITY : All students are expected to become familiar with emergency evacuation procedures, emergency procedures, and potential classroom hazards. I will review these procedures in full detail at the beginning of the quarter.
CULMINATING PRODUCT(S): Students will work on class projects independently as well as in groups. Guidelines and criteria for evaluating each project will be discussed and given to the student prior to the start of a project. The students will complete the following projects:

CAREER TECHNICAL SOCIAL ORGANIZATION: HOSA is a professional organization directed towards the leadership and professional development of high school and post secondary health related programs. More importantly, HOSA can play an important role in your future career choice.

ASSES S MEN T PROCEDURES EVALUA T ION /GRA DIN G : Student assessment will be based upon individual completion of daily assignments, classroom participation, skills lab activities, tests & quizzes. Students will learn how to evaluate his/her own progress and make adjustments as needed. Scheduled tests and quizzes will accompany each unit taught in order to test knowledge and/or skill level of each throughout the school grading period. The following numeral and letter grading scale is used to assess and evaluate student knowledge.

HEALTH SCIENCE INTERNSHIP COURSE OUTLINE


Each student enrolled in Health Science Continuum / Internship is responsible for all of the content standards and objectives listed in the Alabama Course of Study and this Course Outline. Content standards to be taught each day will be listed on the board (and the student will be given a copy for his/her notebook ) for the following topics:

Students will: 1. Demonstrate basic health care skills according to facility protocol. Examples: taking vital signs, applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), gaining first aid certification, explaining body mechanics Identify basic treatments for selected diseases and disorders. Critique key workplace readiness skills needed in a health care career. Demonstrate legal and ethical behaviors in the health care setting. Synthesize medical terminology used within the health care facility or agency. Utilize electronic methods of communication within the health care facility or agency. Develop a health and wellness plan based on client health history. Analyze medications and treatments of selected clients using medical references to determine classifications, indications, contra-indications, side effects, and dosages. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills in the health care facility. Examples: reporting medical information to immediate supervisor, communicating with client and family or caregiver Describe client care procedures, including surgical procedures, Foley catherizations, and tooth extractions. Explain techniques used in selected client care situations, including providing bed baths, taking vital signs, performing range of motion (ROM) exercises, and performing audiometry and vision screening.

HEALTH OCCUPATIONS STUDENTS OF AMERICA (HOSA ) : Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) in an integral part of the Health Science program at the Bryant Career Technical Center. This organization prepares students for employment by promoting competent, aggressive professional leadership. Its goals include establishing a career objective, developing character, self-confidence, and participating in community service activities. Membership is optional and there is a $16.00 yearly fee. Parent/teacher conferences are encouraged.
