The National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc., comprised of people of African ancestry, is committed to enhancing the quality of life and empowering people of African ancestry through advocacy, human services delivery, and research. The National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc. will work to create a world in which people of African ancestry will live free from racial domination, economic exploitation and cultural oppression. In collaboration with national, international and other appropriate groups, NABSW will continue to leverage its collective expertise to strategically develop the capacity of people of African ancestry to sustain and flourish. NABSWs vision is guided by the Principles of the Nguzo Saba, which are Unity, Self-determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith, and the Seven Cardinal Virtues of Maat, which are Right, Truth, Justice, Order, Reciprocity, Balance, and Harmony.

Hotep Brothers and Sisters,

With warm greetings and great anticipation, I welcome you to the 2012-2013 school year! As youre newly elected President of the Office of Student Affairs; National Association of Black Social Workers, Inc., I am thankful that you have given me another opportunity to serve you on the Office of Student Affairs executive team. I have both enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to serve you last year as OSA Secretary. It was truly a rich learning and growth experience and I am excited to continue my service to NABSW.

I hope you have had a wonderful summer and are ready for the challenges of a new year. All of us here at the Office of Student Affairs are excited about the prospects of a very rewarding and fulfilling year. It is with immense delight that I share with you the 2012-13 theme for the Office of Student Affairs, The New Generation of Black Social Workers: Reclaiming Our Culture, Our Purpose, and Our Communities. This theme was directly inspired from our 2013 National Conference theme, "Building Coalitions for Community Empowerment: Ujima - A Model for Collective Work And Responsibility." As students and future leaders (activists, clinicians, administrators, and entrepreneurs), we must take responsibility for our involvement in creating the change we would like to see in our communities.

As a part of this process, the Office of Student Affairs would like to extend the opportunity to you to show the exceptional work you are doing in your chapters, schools, and communities. At this years 45th annual conference in Jacksonville, Fl, the Office of Student Affairs will be hosting student/chapter poster presentations, annual symposium, and a day of service during conference. We encourage each of your chapters to have at least one representative to present and or support these events. You will find the proposal forms, updates, and other documents on our student blog as well as on Facebook.

The achievements with NABSW; Office of Student Affairs are the result of the entire community- students, elders, staff and our community members- working together to maintain the focus on social justice, academic achievement, and social movements to enhance our own communities. As student leaders, we wish to continue to foster this partnership. With your help and support, we are confident we can overcome the many challenges we may face this year. With that in mind, be assured that OSA will continue to support NABSW initiatives charged by our National President, and I encourage student chapters to make efforts in achieving the goals set forth. As we continue to move forward, I implore you to let your voices be heard. I ask that you help us continue the legacy of the Office of Student Affairs as we advocate for the needs of the student members. We are committed to serving you! Please continue communicating and sharing your questions, comments, concerns, and ideas with us through Facebook and the OSA Blogspot at www.nabswstudentaffairs.blogspot.com.

Again, I would like to thank you for your renewed faith in me to serve as your President and hope to see you at the 45th Annual NABSW Conference in Jacksonville, Fl., April 2-6, 2013

Peace and Blessings, Zakia Pugh

Hotep Family! It is the spirit of Harambee that I greet and welcome you to the 2012-13 academic year. As you begin your semester, I am certain you have taken note to all that our communities, society, and people face during this election season. Even more important, is the economic state of our community. Some of you may have already begun to notice the changes that are occurring. Parent plus loans have more stipulations, financial aid SAP (satisfactory academic progress) standards are becoming more stringent and the amount of aid is decreasing. Higher education is indeed a privilege and, now it is becoming more difficult for less affluent families to obtain. As you begin preparing work in your chapters, I hope that you take note of, educate students, and prepare your work with this thought in mind. The theme of this years administration The New Generation of Black Social Workers: Reclaiming our Culture, Our Purpose, and Our Communities speaks directly to the need in our community. There is a reality television show on almost every major network. Many of the shows feature or put on a platform, people who look like us. While they (reality tv celebrities) are overspending, lying, deceiving, going bankrupt, and buying items with no appreciation value, many families are trying to figure out how to send their children to school, buy the new I-Phone 5, latest Jordans, and provide their children with money to attain all other trinkets that claim their attention. This is not and has never been the climate of our community. We cannot allow this to color our view on what we stand for, what our ancestors expect of us and how we should move forward. It further drives home the point that we must continue to infuse the principles of Maat into our communities. This occurs in many ways. Through education in our student chapters, on college campuses, through community outreach, and continued awareness, we can help our community move beyond all that is put in place to oppress us and we can thrive. In order to be the change we want to see, we must remind, model and/or teach those principles we stand for. I am excited to continue to serve as the Advisor to the Office of Student Affairs and look forward to seeing and hearing about the wonderful activities that will come from your chapter. Peace & Blessings, Advisor Brown
