LUBRICATION SYSTEM

OBJECTIVE:The objective of this unit is to make you understand about the following the need of lubrication in diesel engine various mode of lubrication and their working principle INTRODUCTION: Lubrication is one of the important process in working of locomotiveSteps of lubrication of diesel locomotive :1.lub oil pump suck the oil from the sump 2.After suction the oil passes through the heat exachanger. 3.After the heat exchanger lub oil passes through the magnetic filter. 4.After the magnetic filter lub oil passes through the poro filter. 5.After the poro filter lub oil passes through the regulating valve. 6.After the regulating valve its passes through the 7 s-pipe. 7.After the s-pipe its passes through the main bearing. 8.After the main bearing its goes to the CR bearing through the wiper holes. 9.After the CR bearing its passes through the connecting rod. 10.After the connecting rod its passes through gudgeon pin. 11.After the gudgeon pin its passes through the piston. 12.After the piston, oil scraper ring scrap the oil to sump.

Maintenance of lubrication system:1. For approved brand of fuel and lubricants . please refer to chart 1(A), 1(B) and 1(C) . 2. Frequency and criteria of oil change 2.1 Lubricants other than the brands approved for use at specific point should not be used in any case. 2.2 Alternative approved brands of lubricants under no circumstances be intermixed, unless otherwise specified. 2.3 For compressed air and vaccum appliances the special lubricants prescribed by the makers have to be used. 2.4 All new parts of moving elements of the brake rigging are recommended to be greased with molykote products .
2.5 Periodicity

and criteria of oil change: Generally change transmission oil , reversing gear box oil and engine lub oil on condition basis and not on period basis.

For suri hydraulic transmission :

a)

When the transmission is put into the service for the first time, drain and oil from the transmission when run warm after 50 service hours and filters it through a linen cloth filters , flush out the transmission with fresh oil and fill the filtered oil grain .

b) Repeat the above procedure after 10 service hour with a freshly overhauld transmission . c) After 1000 running hours and during the procedure maintained under (a) take a sample of 500 cc filtered

oil and have it checked for aging and the contents of additives . d) Oil sample to determine the transmission oil change period:
i)

the aging of oil is checked by determining the neutralisation number according to DIN51 588 or by checking the solubility in normal benzene or insolubility in benzol according to DIN51 588 . the approximate check , whether the additives in the oil is sufficient is made by the conradson text according to DIN551 or by determining the sulphated according to DIN51575. If due to local conbdition aging of oil cannot be checked change oil after 3000 hours (approx every six months ) . If considerable deposits of metal particles shavings or powder are detected in oil, the oil must be changed immediately and the transmission inspected.

REVERSING GEAR BOX:

When the reversing gear box is put into service for the first time change the oil after 50 service hour and then after following 500 and 1000 service hours respectively. Afterwards change oil on condition basis . if due to local condition oil cannot be checked for aging deteriotion and depletion of additives , change oil every 2000 tools 3000 hours.
