1. Two blocks are connected as shown in Fig. 6.36 and move at constant velocity (the 5 kg-block moves down the incline). Find: (a) the coefficient of kinetic friction assuming it is the same for both blocks; (b) the tension in the rope.

An 80-kg person pushes a 20-kg crate over a rough surface. Take s = 0.8 for the person and k = 0.4 for the crate. (a) What is the maximum possible acceleration of the crate? (b) For the condition in part (a) find the force exerted by the crate on the person.

13. *A block of mass M is subject to the force F shown in the figure. The friction coefficients are k and s. (a) What minimum value of F will start the block moving from rest? (b) Show that if s = cot , the block cannot be moved for any value of F. (c) To what situation does the condition k = cot apply?

14. Block A of mass mA= 2 kg is on the front face of cart B of mass mB = 3 kg (see Fig. 6.45). A force of 60 N acts on mB. What is the minimum coefficient of friction needed for mA not to slide down?

17. A circular off ramp has a radius of 60 m and a posted speed limit of 60 km/h. If the road is horizontal, what is the minimum coefficient of friction required?

18. *A car travels at speed v around a frictionless curve of radius r that is banked at an angle to 2 the horizontal. Show that the proper angle of banking is given by tan = v /rg.
