GLOBAL MARKET FOR ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT DISINFECTION EQUIPMENT TO REACH $1.6 BILLION IN 2016 Wellesley, Mass.

In a recent release, ULTRAVIOLET (UV) DISINFECTION EQUIPMENT: MAJOR APPLICATIONS AND GLOBAL MARKETS (IAS037A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for ultraviolet (UV) light disinfection equipment is estimated to be worth $885 million in 2011, and is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7% during the next five years. At this rate, the overall market value will reach $1.6 billion in 2016. The global UV disinfection equipment market can be broken down by end use into five segments water, wastewater, air, food and beverage, and surface. The water segment held a value of $536 million in 2011, and is expected to increase at a CAGR of 11.4% to reach $921 million in 2016. The wastewater segment held a value of $198 million in 2011, and is expected to increase at a CAGR of 18.2% to reach $456 million in 2016. The air segment was worth $112 million in 2011 and should be worth $171 million in 2016, a CAGR of 8.8%. The segment consisting of food and beverage, worth $27 million in 2011, should be worth $40 million in 2016, a CAGR of 8.2%. The surface segment was valued at $12 million for 2011, and, after increasing at a CAGR of 8.4%, should be worth $18 million in 2016. The use of UV light for disinfection has been practiced for more than 30 years, but only in the last decade has the technology expanded from a niche market to hold a significant share of the disinfection equipment market. UV light is one of a group of advanced treatment technologies known for their improved effectiveness against a range of contaminants found in source water, their decreased production of waste, their nonhazardous properties, their diminished demand for chemical additives, and, in certain cases, their lower energy costs and requirements. Technological innovations are improving system performance, making UV disinfection more attractive to potential purchasers. Among these advances are the use of computational fluid dynamics to model reactor operation and create UV units with optimized dose delivery and reduced energy costs.

New developments in lamp energy sources, such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and microwaves, also are in development to improve energy output while cutting costs. The new lamps also are expected to prolong lamp and system lifetimes and improve disinfection efficiency. Because of the fragmented nature of the industry, it is difficult to find studies that gather extensive data from diverse resources and analyze it in the context of a comprehensive document. This report contains a unique collection of information and conclusions that are difficult to find elsewhere. This report will be most useful to manufacturers and suppliers of UV equipment and technology. Others who will find it informational include companies with system and plant components, ancillary equipment, and related products and services, such as manufacturers and suppliers of UV lamps and ballasts. Finally, senior marketing personnel, venture capitalists, executive planners, research directors, government officials, and suppliers to the industry who want to discover and exploit current or projected market niches should find this report of value, as well as readers who wish to understand how regulations, market pressures, and technology interact with one another in the arena.
