PART A (30 marks)

Answer ALL questions. Each question carries 3 marks 1. If 40 grams of 1.5% hydrocortisone is mixed with 60 grams of 2% hydrocortisone, what is the % w/w of hydrocortisone in final mixture? [Ans: 1.8%] 2. The recommended dose of drug A is 5 mg/kg/day. How many milligrams (mg) of drug A is required to be given every six hours to a 35 year-old patient? (Patient weight = 50kg) [Ans: 41.66mg every 6 hours.] 3. The pharmacist hands you a bottle of 75% alcohol solution and you are asked to mix it with 1000 mL of 10% alcohol solution in order to prepare 500 mL of 30% alcohol. How many milliliters (mL) of 75% alcohol should be used?[Ans: 153.84cc 75% solution is required] 4. A pharmacy assistant has 100 mL of 0.25% w/v stock solution. How many milliliters (mL) of a 1:2000 w/v solution can be made from the stock? [Ans: 500 mL] 5. A transdermal patch for smoking cessation contains 30 mg of liquid nicotine per patch. If nicotine has a specific gravity of 1.01, how many milliliters (mL) of the agent are required to manufacture 5 million patches? [Ans: 148500 mL] 6. QUESTION 5 A clinical pharmacist fills a medication order calling for an infusion fluid of dextrose 5% w/v in a 0.9% w/v sodium chloride injection and 20 milliequivalents (mEq) of potassium chloride in a total volume of 500 mL. The intravenous infusion is administered through an intravenous (IV) set that delivers 10 drops per milliliter. The infusion has been running at a rate of 15 drops per minute for 10 hours. (Molecular weight : Dextrose = 180; NaCl = 58.5; KCl = 74.5) During the 10-hour period: a) How many milliequivalents (mEq) of KCl have been administered? [Ans: 36 mEq KCl] b) How many grams (g) of KCl have been administered? [Ans: 2682 mg or 2.682g KCl] c) How many milimoles (mmol) of KCl have been administered? [Ans: 36 mmol KCl]
