Sherlock Holmes Short Stroies The Speckled Band A pettyes kts/pnt -1Helens Story Sherlock Holmes lived in Baker

r Street in London. At the time of this story one of his friend was still living at Mr Holmess flat. One early morning a young woman came to see their, who was dressed in black. She looked tired and unhappy, and her face was very white. She was afraid of death, and asked for Mr Holmes help. Her name was Helen Stoner and she lived with her stepfather, Dr Grimesby Roylott, near a village in the country. His family was once very rich, but they had no money when her stepfather was born. He studied to be a doctor, and went out to India. He met and married with her mother in India. She and her sister Julia were very young, and their father was dead. Their mother had lot of money, so their stepfather wasnt poor any more. Dr Grimesby was a violent man. He killed his Indian servant because he got angry with the servant. He had to go to prison and then they all came back to England. Their mother died in an accident eight years ago. So her stepfather got all her mothers money. But if Julia or she married, her stepfather must pay their 250font every year. Dr Grimesby/ her stepfather stayed at home and never saw anybody, he was more and more violent and sometimes had fights with the people from the village. Everybody was afraid of him and they were also afraid of his Indian wild animals which ran freely around in the garden. And there were other wild things in the garden, because her stepfather liked gipsies, and they could come and went where they like. Poor Julia and Helen had very unhappy lives. They had no servant and they had to do all the work in the house. When they visited some of their family Julia met a young men who asked to marry her. Her stepfather agreed, but soon after this she died. Julia was only thirty when she died two years ago and her hair was already grey like Helens hair. Sherlock Holmes asked for Helen to told him everything about her sister death. Their three bedrooms were downstairs. First there was her stepfathers room. Julias room was next to his, and Helens room was next to Julias. All rooms had windows on the garden side of the house and all doors opened into the corridor. One evening their stepfather was smoking his strong Indian cigarettes in his room. Julia couldnt sleep because she could smell them in her room, so she went into Helen room to talk to her. She said that she heard a whistle in the middle of the night, but Helen didnt hear. Julia went back to bed and locked the door after her, because they were afraid of the wild animals and the gipsies. Helen couldnt sleep that night, because it was a very stormy night with a lot of wind and rain. Suddenly she heard a womans scream, it was her sisters voice. She ran into the corridor and just then she heard a whistle and a minute later the sound of falling metal. She ran to her sisters door. Julia opened it and fell to the ground. Her face was white and

afraid and she was crying. She cried out in a terrible voice: That speckled band! And after she died. The police couldnt understand why Julia died. Her door was locked and nobody could get into her room. They didnt find any poison in her body. Helen didnt know what was the speckled band and why she was afraid of. A month ago Helen dear friend asked her to marry him. Her stepfather agreed. But two days ago she had to move to her sisters old bedroom, because some men were mending her bedroom wall. Last night she heard that whistle again. Mr Holmes wanted to go to Helen house that evening to look at thoose rooms, but her stepfather must not know. Dr Grimesby was in London, so he wouldnt see them.

-2Holmes and Watson visit the house Previously Helen Stoner went to Sherlock holmes and told her stories. Two years ago her sister Julia died. And now she afraid for her violent stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, because last night she heard that whistle again. After lunch-time they went by train to dr. Roylotts house. Today morning Sherlock found out that Roylott only has 750 font a year from his dead wife and he needs the girl money. They saw Helen room first and it wasnt wrong and Holmes didnt understand why they were mending. Helen thought that it was a plan to move her into Julias room. After they saw Julias room. Holmes looked at the window and said that nobody couldnt come in from outside. There was a bell-rope just over the bed for calling a servant, but they didnt have any servant Her stepfather put it there two yeras ago and he also put an air-vent on the wall between two room. It was strange for Holmes, because the air-vent was on an inside wall and wasnt on outside walls. Then they went into Dr Roylotts room where was a large metal box. Holmes though that he keep a cat, because there waas some milk on a plate on top of the box. He tought that Helen life was in danger, so they must spent the night in Julias room. Holmes thought out when Helens stepfather went to bed, she put a light in Julias bedroom window and left it open. Then Helen went into her old room and they would get into Julias room through the window. They would wait for the sound of the whistle and the falling metal. They walked to the village while Holmes said that this night would be dangerous. But Watson wanted to came with him. The air-vent explained why Helens sister could smell Dr. Roylotts cigarette. And the bed was fixed to the floor, so she couldnt move it. The bed must stay under the rope, which is near the air-vent. Watson began to understand what happened.

-3Death in th Night That night they went back to the house. They saw Helen Stoners light and they got in quietly through the window. They waited silently in the middle (of the) bedrom in the dark. They waited for three hours and they didnt move. Suddenly they saw a light and heard a sound from Dr Roylotts room. But nothing happened and again they waited in the dark. Lather there was anouther sound, a very quite sound Immediately Holmes jumped up and hit the bell-rope hard. Watson didnt see anything, but Holmes saw something. There was a quite whistle. They both looked up at the air-vent and suddenly they heard a terrible cry in the next room. After the house was silent again. They went into Dr Roylotts room. The metal bokx was open. Roylott sitting on a chair and his eyes were fixed on the air-vent. Round his head there was a strange, yellow speckled band. He was dead. The band moved and began to turn (its) his head. It was an Indian snake and its poison could kill very quickly. Holmes took the snake and threw it into the metal boksz. Watson asked Holmes that how did he know about the snake. At first Holmes had thought that it was the gipses. But later he understood. He thought that perhaps something came through the air-vent, down the bell-rope and on the bed. Then there was the milk and of course, snakes drunk milk. It was easy for the Doctor to get Indian animals. And because he was a doctor, he knew that this snakes poison is difficult to found in a dead body. So every night he put the snake through the air-vent, and it went down the bell-rope on the bed. Of course, nobody must see the snake, so every night he whistled to call it back. The sound of metal falling was the door of the metal boksz, which was the snakes home. Perhaps the snake came through the air-vent many times before it killed Julia. But in the end it killed her. And Helen, too, nearly died because of this snake. But that night when he hit snake on the rope, it was angry and went back through the air-vent. And so it killed the Doctor. Soon after that Helen Stoner married her young mand and tried to forget the terrible deaths of her sisters and stepfather. But she never really forgot the speckled band.
