PHILIPPINE BANKING TODAY Republic Act No.

7653, or the New Central Bank Act of 1993, governs Philippine banking today.provides for the establishment of an independent monetary authority to be known as the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), with with the maintenance of price stability explicitly stated as its primary objective, and giving it much needed fiscal and administrative autonomy, which the old Central Bank did not have. The BSP has supervision over the operations of banks and and exercises such regulatory powers over the operations of finance companies and non-bank financial institutions performing quasibanking functions. As of February 2009, there are 21,494 BSP supervised/regulated banks, broken down into: Banks 7,743 (universal and commercial banks, 4,284; thrift banks, 1,318; and rural and cooperative banks, 2,141); Non-Banks Offshore Banks 7. It also extends discounts, as well as loans and advances to banking institution undergoing serious financial pressures, thus influencing the volume of credit consistent with objective of price stability.

E-MONEY ARE DIVIEDE INTO THREE GROUPS 1. Access devices these include automated teller machine and home banking by telephone or computer. 2. Card-based products these are also called stored value (SVC) products. 3. Prepaid software products or network money involve funds that are stored in electronic home and are transferred over communication network among participant in the network.

PERSPECTIVE ON BANK OR BANKING What is bank? Bank is an institution which deals primarily in the receipt of deposits and the loaning out of times. Bank shal refer to entities engaged in the lending of funds obtained in the forms of deposits.

TYPE OF BANKS a. Privately owned it is organized and capitalized by private citizens for their profits. b. Publicly owned bank is organized by the state and sometimes has a minimum of private ownership.

FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC BANK I. Domestic it is incorporated under the laws of the Philippines, follows majority of the stocks are owned by Filipinos in confirmity with the Philippine corporation code. II.Foreign when the bank is incorporated under the law of another country, although the bank might be doing business in the Philippines.

Original objectives of CB 1.maintenance of monetary stability in the Philippines. 2.preservation of the international value of the peso and its convertibility into other freely convertible currencies. 3.promotion of a raising level of production, employment, and real income in the Philippines. PD no.72, promulgated in 1972, amended certain sections of RA 265 (central bank act). -amended objectives of the CB. 1.to maintain internal and external monetary stability in the Phils., and the convertibility of the peso into other freely convertible currencies. 2.to foster monetary, credit and exchange conditions conducive to a balanced sustainable growth of the economy.
