The U.S. Department of Education announced today 20 grants totaling nearly $4 million to directly fund charter
developers for the planning, program design and implementation of new charter schools, and the sharing of
practices and dissemination of information by successful charter schools. Today's grants will serve 18 new, or
recently opened charter schools over the next three years. These grants also will provide two high-quality
charter schools the ability to partner with other charter and non-charter public schools to improve academic
performance and share effective practices.
"High-quality charter schools across the country are making amazing differences in our children's lives," U.S.
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. "These grantees serve a range of students, including those from
disadvantaged backgrounds, and prepare them for college and careers."
The Obama administration will invest more than $255 million this year to assist in the planning and development
of public charter schools and the dissemination of successful practices through the Charter Schools Program
(CSP).
The purpose of CSP is to increase national understanding of the charter school model and to expand the number
of high-quality charter schools available to students across the nation by providing financial assistance for the
planning, program design, initial implementation, and dissemination of best practices. Federal funds also are
available to replicate and expand successful schools, help charter schools find suitable facilities, and pay for
national activities and initiatives that support charter schools. More information about the Charter Schools
Program is available from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement.
