Trans student
suspended after ght
A 15-year-old transgender student at
Patapsco Senior High School identied as
Dee was suspended following a ght with
another student, according to school ofcials.
The attack occurred on Oct. 11 at the
Dundalk-area school. Dee was allegedly
assaulted and had her hair pulled by a
female student. She fought back, and
during the altercation, the attacker
allegedly called Dee a tranny faggot.
Fighting is a Category I offense in the
Baltimore County Public Schools Code
of Conduct, and suspension is one of the
disciplinary options for the offense. Both
students were immediately suspended in
compliance with the policy.
The dispute stemmed from a drink-
throwing incident in the cafeteria the day
before in which, according to a source, Dee
was defending a gay friend from ridicule.
Dee identied as a gay male named David
while attending Golden Ring Middle School
where he had been bullied constantly for
being gay. During the summer before
ninth grade, Dee came out as transgender,
according to a county social worker.
Although there was a degree of
acceptance, Dee always believed that she
was viewed as different and that the attack
resulted, in part, from that perspective,
according to Cathi Coulson, a Towson-
based licensed clinical social worker for 22
years who specializes in adolescents and has
worked for years with Dee and her family. I
am amazed by her strength and courage to
be true to herself, Coulson said.
Charles Herndon, a spokesperson for
Baltimore County Public Schools conrmed
there was a ght involving Dee. The school
investigated the incident thoroughly and it
appeared that sexual orientation did not
provoke this incident, he told the Blade.
A hearing has been scheduled for Oct.
19 to determine if the suspension should be
extended and if expulsion will be considered
as a result of Dees actions during the ght.
Bloomberg donates to
Md. marriage effort
New York City Mayor Michael
Bloomberg, a graduate of Johns
Hopkins University, donated $250,000 to
Marylanders for Marriage Equality. Along
with his contribution, Bloomberg sent a
message to Marylanders.
Maryland will always hold a special
place in my heart. I went to college at Johns
Hopkins in Baltimore, and have remained
active in the Hopkins community. So when
Governor OMalley asked me to support
Question 6, I didnt hesitate.
Two years ago, marriage equality was
passed in the State of New York with bi-
partisan support. The victory resulted
in one of our states great civil rights
victories, Bloomberg said.

Trans 101 tutorial
The Gay & Lesbian Community Center of
Baltimore will offer a Trans 101 tutorial so that
interested parties, friends and allies may learn
about trans people and what challenges trans
people face in both the LGBTQ community

According to GLCCB Board Member
Sharon Brackett, who will present the tutorial
and lead the discussion, Our gender
identity is how we see ourselves. Some of
us see ourselves as women, some as men,
some as a combination of both, some as
neither. Some of us have complex identities
that may even be uid and change over
time. Everyone has a gender identity. And
everyone expresses their gender identity.
It will take place Oct. 23 at the GLCCB,
2410 Chase St., in Baltimore from 7-8:30 p.m.

Reaction by some to
Gallaudet controversy
is indefensible
For many in the LGBT community the
word hate is no longer a noun or a verb.
Its simply an overused adjective with which
some have fallen in love.
Following the controversial decision
last week by Gallaudet University to
place Chief Diversity Ofcer Dr. Angela
McCaskill on paid administrative leave
in response to her having signed a ballot
petition in her residential locale in Mary-
land to qualify a voter referendum on the
states pending same-sex marriage law,
consternation and condemnation was the
overwhelming reaction.
McCaskill, a 23-year employee at the
D.C. campus of the nations leading univer-
sity for deaf and hard-of-hearing students,
is the rst deaf African-American female
to earn her Ph.D. from Gallaudet. She was
suspended by President Alan Hurwitz fol-
lowing a complaint by a faculty colleague,
reportedly an out lesbian, who had discov-
ered McCaskills name on the list of signa-
tories published by the Washington Blade.
In announcing the decision, Hurwitz
indicated that McCaskills petition sign-
ing had caused members of the university
to be concerned and confused terms
more aptly self-applied.
Gallaudet proved more than a tad bit
ironic in demonstrating an inability to tol-
erate a diversity of opinion by its own di-
versity ofcer. Although irrelevant, it soon
became known that McCaskill had not
signed the ballot petition as a result of
any anti-gay animus, instead considering
it a legislative issue best decided by the
democratic process.
Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley, other
same-sex marriage supporters and Mary-
landers for Marriage Equality quickly criti-
cized the universitys decision to punish
McCaskill and called for her immediate
reinstatement. We strongly disagree with
the decision, Josh Levin, campaign man-
ager for the organization supporting ap-
proval of Question 6, said in a statement.
The group also placed an ad in The Capital
newspaper condemning the suspension,
noting that the issue was being able to ex-
press ones opinions, freely, and participate
in the political process.
The Washington Post editorialized
against the university action, pointing out
there is no evidence that her views on gay
marriage, whatever they are, affected her
performance at work. To the contrary, until
now she was known for supporting a new
resource center for gay students on cam-
pus. Firing, or threatening to re, a diver-
sity ofcer for off-campus political activity
strikes us as inconsistent with open sharing
of thoughts and ideas.
Maryland State Rep. Aisha Braveboy,
chair of the legislatures Black Caucus
joined McCaskill at a press conference out-
side the State Capitol Building in Annapolis
this week, indicating that the Caucus was
highly troubled that Gallaudet would
punish its Associate Provost of Diversity
and Inclusion.
Also troubling was the frequently vitriol-
ic comments posted online at mainstream
media news reports and on both LGBT and
general audience blogs supporting the in-
stitutions indefensible actions.
Worse, a number of the commentaries
introduced a new term into the vernacular:
Hate voting.
This outrageous epithet is presumably
reserved for those with opposing politi-
cal views. A companion expression to the
milder hate chicken, recently espoused
regarding Chick-l-A.
Is alleged hate voting a hate crime?
Friends and relatives reportedly de-
scribed McCaskill encountering why do
you hate me? inquiries.
Voter petitions are available for public
inspection, including for the purpose of
verifying ballot qualication. Technology
allows easy dissemination of names and
addresses.
Although access to such information is
a little creepy and can lead to abuse, that
genie now roams outside the bottle. How-
ever, the notion that identifying neighbors
and coworkers with differing political views
will result in Kumbaya doorstep dialogue is
disingenuous. It will garner further public
process disengagement and make petition
signature gathering more difcult.
Hurwitz announced on Tuesday the
option for McCaskill to return to her job,
likely fearing a lawsuit and ongoing blow-
back. However, he indicated there were
unspecied hoops through which she
needed to jump.
A public apology is what is called for,
Mr. Hurwitz, plus maybe a few extra credit
courses in constitutional law.
Maryland voters will soon decide the
fate of marriage equality. Lets hope they
overlook Gallaudet Universitys bonehead-
ed actions against a fellow citizen and the
hate reaction by some members and
supporters of the LGBT community.
All we can hope is that they not hate us.

Party guests use of faggot
prompts awkward but
rewarding moment
By HEATHER FITZ
At a party last weekend, I had an en-
counter that made me angry, sad and
kind of proud of myself. My partner of
seven years, April, and I attended the
housewarming party of Linda, the amaz-
ing woman who is renting our house
downtown. The backyard was lit up, a re
pit burned and a talented guitarist played
on the porch. When we arrived, none of
our friends were there yet, so I did what
I always do and struck up a conversation
with someone I didnt know, a guy who
passed by me to get a beer out of the
cooler. As soon as he picked it up, I joked,
Hey! I was gonna drink that one next!
He laughed, turned and introduced
himself, Im Adam.
Im Heather. Nice to meet you.
Adam, I realized very quickly, was D-
R-U-N-K. But it was a party, and I didnt
care. I learned he was a friend of a friend
who didnt know Linda, but was invited to
come along to the party.
We talked football and disagreed on
our feelings about Michael Vick and his
dog scandal. As I was trying to gure
out my exit strategy, he asked me about
college football. I told him I was an FSU
graduate and Seminoles fan.
Ugh, he said. I hate Seminole fans.
Worst fucking fans in the world! Worse
than Alabama, Georgia and Miami!
Why do you say that, I asked.
He proceeded to tell me a story about
attending an FSU/Virginia Tech game
once where he witnessed three drunk
guys harass a man and his daughter after
the game. It sounded like a bad scene, so
I said: You know, that was terrible. But
every school has rowdy, obnoxious fans.
I dont agree with what they did, but you
cant attribute their behavior to the entire
Seminole fan base.
He replied, They were fucking ass-
holes. Seriously, a bunch of goddamn
FAGGOTS.
I felt the earth move under my feet and
my expression froze. He read my reaction
correctly, and said, laughing: I probably
shouldnt say that word too loudly.
No, no you shouldnt. You should
never say it especially when you are
talking to someone who is gay.
The look of shock and surprise on his
face was unmistakable. Ive been told
that most people would not peg me as
gay and clearly he had no idea.
He fumbled around for words for a few
seconds and then said, Its just a word. I
mean, do you know its origin? I was a his-
tory major, so I can tell you.
Its not just a word. You used it to
describe people who you just nished
saying were degenerates, losers and ass-
holes.
He stumbled away and I found myself
incredulous at the slur. Yes, he was drunk,
but frankly, drunk people say more freely
what they really feel and believe. But lots
of sober people throw the word around
too, to describe people they dont like,
would like to do harm to, want to make
fun of, etc.
Its a slur. It hurts and it is not
acceptable.
I was proud of myself for confronting
him and even prouder of Linda and her
boyfriend when upon hearing about
the incident (I didnt tell them, someone
else who overheard it did) asked Adam
to leave given his disrespect of their gay
friends.
Ive given it a lot of thought and be-
lieve we need to continue to stand up
and say something when we hear fag-
got or queer thrown around. Young
gay kids are hanging themselves because
elementary school kids want to play
Smear the Queer or because they like
theater instead of football.
As gay adults, sometimes it feels eas-
ier to ignore the comments rather than
confront them. We need to. And more
importantly, if you arent gay, but hear
the slur, I would hope you too would say
something. Because if you love me, you
know my heart and that when someone
uses the slur, they are inferring gay peo-
ple are all the things Adam spoke of.
Imagine the impact if straight people
who overheard such slurs stood up and
said: I have a sister, mother, brother,
niece, nephew, friend, cousin who is gay

D.C. is a 21st century city
stuck with 20th century
leadership
By MARY BROOKS BEATTY
Though social issues like marriage
equality still divide the major political
parties on the national level, in D.C.,
both Republicans and Democrats are for-
tunately united in support of equal rights
for gay and lesbian couples.
Another place where we may nd com-
mon ground between political parties in
the nations capital is in a belief that the
District currently lacks strong and account-
able leaders with a bold vision for the fu-
ture. The city deserves better than a medi-
ocre and ethically challenged status quo.
Thats why Im running for City Council.
Washington is a 21st century city stuck
with 20th century leadership. The pay to
play schemes that used to plague big city
governmentswhere public dollars ow
to politicians friends rather than quali-
ed biddersare regrettably still standard
practice in the District of Columbia. One-
party political rule has left no one in charge
of holding the Council accountable and
ethical standards have suffered as a result.
Take Council member Michael A.
Browns stealthy approach to legalizing
online gambling (executed while working
for a rm that would have beneted from
the gambling contract.) Or consider
Council Chair Kwame Browns resignation
earlier this year after he was charged with
bank fraud. These are examples (by no
means isolated) of elected representatives
more interested in helping themselves
than helping the people of the District.
I would be a different kind of Council
member, and I have a record to prove it.
I served for six years as commissioner of
an Advisory Neighborhood Commission
(ANC) in northeast Capitol Hill, a neighbor-
hood Ive lived in for nearly 15 years. The
ANC I chaired included the H Street corri-
dor, which at the time I took ofce in 2004
was a hot spot for drug dealing and street
drinking. I initiated and led an effort to ban
the sale of single containers of alcohol along
the H Street corridor. This seemingly small
change made this historic street pedestrian-
friendly again, and opened up the door for
explosive retail and restaurant growth.
Listening to the concerns of your peers,
and working together with them to solve
problemsits this attitude, rather than the
whats in it for me mentality, that we need
more of on the D.C. City Council. Ethics
reform of this magnitude might seem like
a daunting task, but the 25+ years I spent
working in state legislatures has taught me
how to identify the root cause of a prob-
lem, build consensus among stakeholders,
and take positive action.
Washington, D.C., is changing before
our eyes: Census data show that many of
the citys neighborhoods are becoming
younger and more diverse as young profes-
sionals continue to ock here for opportuni-
ties. At the same time, the Census Bureau
has also reported that more than 100,000 of
the citys residents remain below the poverty
line. Both groups need and demand effec-
tive government. That means keeping crime
low so that people feel safe; providing ef-
cient city services at an equitable tax rate;
supporting laws that protect the citys most
vulnerable residents; and continuing the
march toward better public schools.
We cant afford another four years of
failed leadership from Council members
who act in their own best interests instead
of ours. We need real, honest-to-good-
ness change in the nations capitaland
thats exactly what I promise to work for
when I take ofce on Jan. 1, 2013.

Elliot Loves
From the creative mind of Terracino comes this wildly entertaining
NYC tale of wide-eyed Elliot, a young gay man seen both as an
inquisitive 10-year-old boy and an idealistic 21-year-old searching
for love in all the wrong places. Elliot is handsome and charismatic,
but unlucky in love. He cant seem to hold down a relationship
for more than a few weeks but things look promising with Kiko,
a sexy young go-go dancer who seems smitten with Elliot. As
Elliots heart is repeatedly broken in the present, the flm fashes back to situations in the past that fuels
his current need for love as he struggles through adolescence with his abused mother. Although heavy in
theme, Elliot Loves bounds with a consistent optimism and features captivatingly nuanced performances
throughout. Charming, fresh, and engrossing, Elliot Loves is a classic gay feature in the making.

Its an interesting time for Barbra
Streisand fans.
Shes on tour and played New York last
weekend (no D.C. dates scheduled).
A (sort of) new album dropped Oct.
9 called Release Me that collects 11
previously unreleased outtakes from
various album projects going back to the
beginning of her career in the early 60s
But just as interesting is the new book
Hello, Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra
Streisand, also released this month from
gay author William J. Mann, who, in addition
to several novels, has penned well-received
bios on William Haines, John Schlesinger,
Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.
Mann, an iconoclast who doesnt smash
his subjects but delights in deconstructing
widely parsed anecdotes of show biz
folklore, zeroes in on Streisands early
years from early 1960 (when she was 17)
to the spring of 64 by which time she had
opened in the long-delayed Funny Girl
on Broadway and recorded three platinum-
selling albums for Columbia.
Mann focuses on her early years
because he says everything we think we
know about her can be traced back to this
seminal period She arrived in New York
in 1959 as a penniless teenager without any
connections or experience. Less than ve
years later she was the top-selling female
recording artist in the country and the star
of one of Broadways biggest smash hits.
Going in as close as I have in this book has
allowed me to really shed light on how she
accomplished such a feat.
Manns in Washington Wednesday on his
book tour at the D.C. Jewish Community
Center for a 7 p.m. Streisand presentation
after which hell sign copies of the book.
During two phone chats this week, the
49-year-old author talked about the process
of bringing the book he wasnt particularly
a Streisand fan before to fruition and
how writing it compared to his mammoth
Hepburn and Taylor tomes.
Mann says focusing on Streisands early
years turned out to be an unexpected
advantage. Because few of the key players
are still in touch with the notoriously
private and exacting legend, they felt
freer, Mann says, to cooperate. He wasnt
on a mission to bash Streisand, but he did
want an honest and fresh take.
These very, very famous people really
live in a bubble, he says. It becomes
virtually impossible to get an unvarnished
opinion because any colleague you talk to
is going to have nothing but superlatives
and that becomes very difcult. About
90 percent of the people I spoke to didnt
continue on with her. so they could be
candid. They didnt have to think, Gee, is
Barbra gonna be pissed at me, I have to
work with her next month.
Despite calling the book notable for
its breadth of detail and fair mindedness,
biographer James Gavin writing for the
New York Times said little of the book
is new, a point Mann counters with his
biggest coup being granted the right
to delve into the Jerome Robbins (the
Broadway legend who worked on Funny
Girl) papers at the New York Public
Library, which had not previously been
plumbed for any Streisand book and are
not available to researchers (Mann got an
exception through the Robbins estate).
And even though Streisands rst
boyfriend, Barry Dennen has written an
entire book (1997s My Life with Barbra)
on their relationship, Mann says he got fresh
material from the gay actor for Gorgeous.
One of Manns favorite experiences was
visiting Phyllis Diller, who became a pal
and mentor of the young Streisand during
their time performing at seedy New York
nightclub the Bon Soir in the early 60s.
(Diller died in August.)
She was such a hoot, Mann says with
a laugh. That interview was probably the
most enjoyable of the process. I got to
go to her house and she was irting and
laughing. I asked her if shed give me one
of her trademark laughs and she did. I just
sat there thinking, I love my job.
Other gets werent so splashy
but proved equally invaluable. Though
scads of Streisand material has been
released and is on YouTube, Mann says
the Streisand acionados almost all
gay were helpful. He thinks his track
record on the Hepburn and Taylor books
helped open doors on several fronts. The
book is off to a strong start according
to Nielsen BookScan, its sold about 2,000
copies already.
Theres one fan, and of course hes
made me promise never to reveal who he
is, who had some really amazing stuff. There

32 OCTOBER 19, 2012 QUEERY: 20 QUESTI ONS FOR ABDUR- RAHI M BRI GGS
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT
AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST
PERSON TO TELL?
Well actually, I am out to myself. I
tend to keep my personal life personal.
However, I am out to my parents. The
hardest person to tell was a straight guy
I once had a crush on. Were still friends
today.
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
The late Wanda L. Alston.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST
NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT?
Presently, it would be a bi-monthly
party called Dark Fantasy hosted by
The Kings Entertainment Group held
every rst and third Saturdays at the
Warehouse Lofts. Hot brothers all over
the place!
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
Thats a tough one! My dream
wedding would be a ceremony
overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Im
a big fan of scenic weddings.
WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU
MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
The empowerment and providing
positive mentorship for todays urban
youth. Many young people do not have
positive role models to look to. That
concerns me a great deal.
WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME
WOULD YOU CHANGE?
The assassination of Malcolm X. He
was killed at the age of 44, although
he and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had
philosophical differences, they both
were profound visionaries and leveraged
their religious faiths to move and inspire
the African-American community during
the Civil Rights Movement. It just would
have been interesting to see what more
Malcolm X could have accomplished if
he had more time. Hes truly my hero.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST
MEMORABLE POP CULTURE
MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
Michael Jacksons Thriller. He will
forever be the greatest musical artist
ever to walk the planet. I love you
Michael!
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
Erasing healthcare disparities and
increasing HIV awareness among
minority communities, which is exactly
why I founded Al Sura Inc.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK
POST OR TWEET?
My last Facebook post was
Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012. I was
promoting an upcoming event. I have to
admit it, I am a Facebook junkie.
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT
WOULD THE TITLE BE?
You Dont Need a Title to Be a
Leader
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO
CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION,
WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
You got me on that one! I would not
change a thing about me. I love and
accept who I am. I would not change a
thing.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND
THE PHYSICAL WORLD?
I believe Allah has prepared a
wonderful after-life for those who spread
great deeds on this earth. Our time is
limited.
WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT
MOVEMENT LEADERS?
Follow and trust what Allah has called
you to do. If you are called to serve, do
it and forget the haters. Follow your
journey and leave a legacy behind so
that when you are gone, your legacy
will live on like my LGBT hero Wanda L.
Alston.
WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS
HOT COALS FOR?
I would walk across hot coals for truth,
honesty and integrity.
WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS
YOU MOST?
That we are morally and spiritually
bankrupt when in fact we actually pray
to Allah (God) more than heterosexuals
do. Another pet peeve I dislike is
when people equate our sexuality with
promiscuity.
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT
MOVIE?
Mommie Dearest
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED
SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Being politically correct.
WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU
MOST COVET?
An Oscar!
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN
AT 18?
I wish Id known that it is OK to be and
love myself.
WHY WASHINGTON?
Its the perfect place to become
politically active and engaged through
heightened community service and
aggressive activism. This is the work
that I and seven other board members
currently do with Al Sura Inc. In fact our
organization has a mini-grant program
that assists D.C.-based LGBT and
black-focused community non-prots
in achieving their missions. Look for our
other events next year Al Sura in
Black on Feb. 23 and the White Attire
Affair on July 20.

Last years Out & Equal Conference was held in Dallas. Its in Baltimore this year.
PHOTO COURTESY OF OUT & EQUAL
LGBT workplace
advocacy group has array
of events planned
By SANTIAGO MELLI-HUBER
Many U.S. residents even in the LGBT
world forget there are 29 states where
its perfectly legal to re an employee
based solely on his or her perceived
sexual orientation.
For those at Out & Equal Workplace
Advocates, thats a major concern.
Issues of workplace equality for gays
are again on the table at this years Out &
Equal Workplace Summit, an annual event
that comes this year to Baltimore from
Oct. 29-Nov. 1.
The purpose of the Summit, organizers
say, is to draw thousands of professionals
from across the country and around the world
to discuss strategies to create workplace
equality. From there, attendees are
encouraged to take what they learned and
improve the working conditions for LGBT
employees of their respective companies.
The Summit is an opportunity to learn,
teach, network and have fun with kindred
spirits, lesbian Selisse Berry, Out &
Equals founding executive director, said
in a statement. Together, we will move
out from Baltimore, creating the ripples
that will build respectful and inclusive
workplaces around the globe.
The Summit, which started in 1999, will
take place at the Baltimore Convention
Center. Registration is available onsite
(online registration was available but
is now closed). Registration includes a
welcome reception, six workshop sessions
featuring about 120 program options,
leadership seminars, a ticket to the Gala
Awards Plenary Reception and Dinner
with Sister Sledge member Kathy Sledge,
and access to the Night Out! events on
Oct. 31. About 2,600 attended last years
conference in Dallas.
Onsite non-sponsor rates start at $1,350
for the full conference but day rates,
student discounts and other packages are
available in different price brackets.
The Night Out! event options include
a screening of the lm Codebreaker,
based on the tragic life of gay computer
scientist Alan Turing, and a Halloween
party in Baltimores Power Plant Live.
Speakers at the Summit include Judy
Shepard, mother of the late Matthew

speech before the Iowa House Judiciary
Committee in favor of marriage equality
became an internet sensation and who
recently spoke at the Democratic National
Convention. Beth Brooke, global vice
chair of public policy at Ernst & Young, is
the keynote speaker.
The Summit also features the
presentation of the Outie Awards.
Out & Equal gives the awards annually
to individuals and corporations who are
leaders in promoting workplace equality
for the LGBT community around the
world. Categories include outstanding
work done by both members of the LGBT
community as well as allies. Finalists for
the corporate award include, among
others, Google and Whirlpool.
In addition to looking for an opportunity
to bring the conference to the East
Coast and to acknowledge the progress
being made for the LGBT community
in downtown Baltimore, Kevin Jones,
deputy director of Out & Equal Workplace
Advocates, is excited about the Summits
location, as Maryland is ghting for same-
sex marriage rights this November.
While Out & Equal Workplace Advocates
works year-round to create safe and equitable
environments for LGBT professionals, the
Summit is the organizations most inuential
event. Jones, who is gay, stresses the
importance of the event in relation to the
function of the organization.
The Summit is the single largest program
that we do and also the source of almost
90 percent of the resources that run Out &
Equal and our other programs training,
consulting, regional afliate activities
throughout the course of the year.
According to Jones, a major focus of the
2012 Summit includes federal employees,
given the Summits proximity to Washington.
The Summit is recognized as ofcially
approved training for federal employees.

Friday night pizza
tradition hard to
replicate outside NYC
By JONATHAN HOWARD
Growing up in New York, every Friday
night was pizza night with my family.
Each week, a perfect New York-style
pizza pie made its way to the kitchen
table. Pizza that had the perfect crust; not
too thin and not too thick; the right sauce-
to-cheese ratio and not swimming in oil. I
loved those Friday nights with my family
and I still love pizza.
I thought all pizza was perfect, just like
the ones that sat in front of me in my
youth. The rude awakening arrived when
I moved to Boston. My rst Friday night
alone I called the local pizza parlor and
ordered a large pie.
We dont sell pie, said the man on the
other end of the line with a chuckle, We
sell pizza. Before the man could hang up
I asked for a large cheese pizza pie, but
what eventually arrived at my dorm room
didnt even come close to the perfection
I was used to. Thats where my quest for
the perfect pizza began, and after 10 years
in Boston I never found pizza that met my
snobby New York pizza standards.
Now my quest continues in Washington
and the perfect pie is still eluding me.
Not a single jumbo slice comes close,
but they arent supposed to; they ll a
different pizza niche. Manny and Olgas
on 14th Street serves up a solid pizza, but
not perfection. Places like Pi, Pizza No. 17,
Pizzeria Paradiso and Matchbox all offer
great gourmet pizza options but none are
New York-style pizza. So when a coworker
said he had some of the best pizza of his
life at Menomale Pizza Napoletana (2711
12 Street N.E.), I assembled a group
of people and we descended on the
Brookland pizza spot on a Friday evening.
Menomale, which means thank
goodness in Italian, opened this past
May and is owned by Italian-born
pizza-master Ettore Rusciano and self-
proclaimed beer nerd Leland Estes. These
guys put together a menu that consists
of pizza, calzones and sandwiches made
completely with ingredients sourced from
the Campania region of Italy. The beer list
is clever and constantly rotating with both
bottles and drafts available for patrons.
The accommodating staff offered us
a couple of seating options upon our
arrival, since seven of us had arrived and
the adorable 38-seat restaurant can sit a
party of six maximum. However, a cozy
option in the back corner allowed us all
to enjoy our meal together. We started
with the Formaggi Della Casa that had
three artisan cheeses, dried fruit, nuts,
honey and delicious pizza crust to serve it
all on. I devoured the cheeses in minutes
leaving very little for the rest of the table,
including a moldy blue cheese that
was exquisite, and I dont generally like
moldy cheese.
For the meal I had the Buongustaio
Pannuozzo wood red sandwich with
sausage, prosciutto de parma and buffalo
mozzarella. The name means tasty sandwich
and it was exactly that. The pizzas we tried
included the margherita (sometimes the
best way to judge a place is with its simplest
dish); the Diavola, which has spicy salami and
red peppers on top of the buffalo mozzarella
and tomatoes; and the Capricciosa, which is
mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh
garlic, salami, artichokes and black olives.
We also tried the interesting Patata, which
is cream of potato, sausage, black olives,
mozzarella and fresh basil. All of these items
are cooked in the wood burning pizza oven
that Rusciano brought to the U.S. This oven
cooks the pizzas at 900 degrees and is one
of the largest on the East Coast. It also kind
of looks like a cool spaceship, at least to me.
Each of these pizzas is made with high
quality, fresh ingredients. The avor proles
are all interesting and the pies all come to the
table piping hot and delicious. Menomale
makes gourmet pizzas that are on an equal
playing eld, if not better than some of the
establishments mentioned earlier. Sure, I
will still be looking for my perfect New York-
style pizza (and bagels, and black and white
cookies, and deli sandwiches), but I will still
return to Menomale for some gourmet pies
every now and again.

The perfect slice?
Not all pizza is created equal. D.C. has some great options, but searching for authentic New York-
style pizza can be frustratingly elusive.

Sometimes it takes a
holistic approach to get at
the root of a health issue
Holistic is a buzz word thats used a lot
these days but the concept extends to
the coaching world as well certied
wellness coaches are trained to assess and
guide your overall health and well being.
Wellness coaching is a relatively new
trend in life coaching that addresses the
entire person and focuses on his or her
overall life style rather than some of its
elements. In particular, there is a more
directed focus on eating strategies,
tness, exercise and the integration of
healthy habits into daily lives.
The American College of Sports
Medicine, the gold standard certifying
agency in the tness industry, stands by
wellness coaching and now endorses a
coaching certication program. There
are several other wellness coaching
certications that are gaining respect as
well. Some of the more reputable personal
training certications are integrating the
wellness coaching paradigm into their
certication programs.
Some physicians started referring their
patients as they recognize they deal with
physical and emotional manifestations of
the impact unbalanced lives have on their
patients. Stressors we have to deal with on
a daily basis and might lead to all kinds of
ailments require changing our attitude,
life style, replacing bad habits with good
ones, etc. It is very hard to do on our own,
just as its hard to bring our physical tness
to the desired level without a personal
trainer if we want long-lasting results.
Wellness coaching brings together
several wellness disciplines together
such as nutrition, physical training, yoga,
meditation and spirituality. Some wellness
coaches might be experts in any of those
disciplines or none. What they are certainly
experts in is helping clients develop a
vision for a healthy life style where those
elements are present and are part of the
strategy for overall wellness.
It might be one or two, or all of these
elements depending on the clients
needs and goals. Coaches have a
comprehensive tool kit and extensive
knowledge they acquired through their
training that is designed to assess the
clients current state of affairs, set
up goals, develop vision and a sound
strategy to achieve those goals. Just
as a physician might refer a patient
to a wellness coach, a coach might
refer a client to a personal trainer, a
nutritionist, a yoga instructor, etc. The
difference between doing it on our own
and as part of wellness coaching is that
the coach will keep us accountable on
incorporating these elements in our
daily/weekly/monthly activities in the
context of our whole life while keeping
us focused on our short term and long
term realistic goals.
How many of us fail at New Years
resolutions? How many diets fail in the
long term? Just as the Japanese proverb
says, Vision without action remains
just a dream; action without a vision is a
nightmare, we tend to stop at either
having our vision of our life in a distant
future or frantically trying to do this and
that just because we saw it in a magazine
or on TV having no idea how it applies to
each of us individually.
We might be pretty good at vision but
then we fail at acting consistently toward
making our vision our reality. Or, we grab
a trendy diet and rigorously follow it while
ignoring daily stress, lack of exercise,
dissatisfaction at work place, in the family,
giving up on our passion and just being
kind and nurturing to ourselves.
In a results-driven culture of high stress,
wellness coaching is especially popular
among those who woke up to the fact
and realize that there is more to life than
a hefty bank account, a promotion or a 10-
hour work day. The realization is that there
is something missing or I am missing out
on something. How often is it pondered
that a 10-hour work day can be utterly
fullling if our work is our passion and
not an obligation. If we get to change
that one element our life can change
completely. But those of us who are stuck
at doing it need to realize that while we
are thinking we are providing our needs,
those needs are not met anyway due to
lack of time, poor health, low energy level,
bad relationships, etc.
I like to think of wellness coaching as a
new awareness that can bring both peace
and passion into our life while staying t
and healthy. It may seem like a lot of work
if you have never worked with a coach, a
nutritionist, a personal trainer, a spiritual
advisor, yoga instructor, etc. Nonetheless,
we are priceless commodities and wellness
coaching can be one of the most effective
investments you can make toward your
overall health and well being.

Stylish makeovers turn
these cars into design stars
By JOE PHILLIPS
Brrrrrr. Is that a chill in the air? Well, yes,
but its not the weather.
Instead, my partner and I in the midst
of the renovation from hell are arguing,
er, discussing who is going to make the
next run to Home Depot.
Luckily, the test vehicle in the driveway
is a crossover, making it easy to haul
everything from nishing nails to fertilizer.
To keep up with overwhelming demand,
automakers are making crossovers more
stylish and comfortable than ever.
Below are three of the best.
INFINITI FX37
$45,000
Mpg: 17 city/24 highway
0-to-60 mph: 6.8 seconds
Cargo space: 25 cu. ft.
Like David Bromstad, that hunky
designer on HGTV, the FX37 is muscular
yet modish. With bulging side panels,
oversize alloy wheels and a re-sculpted
front end, theres no mistaking this beefy
crossover for a station wagon. Or
horrors a dowdy minivan.
Ditto the dashing interior, with lots of luxe
touches: rm yet supple seats, rich wood
trim and a classy analog clock like something
from Tiffany. But there is at least one form-
over-function faux pas: the sloped back-end
reduces rear-window visibility (luckily, theres
a backup camera). Choice of two engines:
a new, more powerful V6 or, in the high-test
FX50 model, a stellar 390-hp V8 (though it
costs $15,000 more than the base model).
Theres plenty of legroom up front, but
not much for rear-seat passengers. Cargo
space is also a bit sparse, compared with the
competition. Still, the FX is fun to drive with
handling thats almost as butt-jarringly taut as
a Nissan Z sportster. But then, anyone driving
the FX isnt looking for a cushy land yacht.
LEXUS RX 450H
$46,000
Mpg: 32 city/28 highway
0-to-60 mph: 7.5 seconds
Cargo space: 40 cu. ft.
Along with a facelift including snazzy new
grille, headlights and tail-lights, the RX 450h
gets cosmetic changes inside: a redesigned
steering wheel and space-age center
console, along with contrast stitching on the
seats. This isnt a macho-mobile, but then the
RX has always been more button-down chic.
Same goes for the smooth ride, with a
solid suspension that turns potholes into
minor blips. The cabin is quiet, too a
good reason to upgrade to the 12-speaker
audio with HD radio and iTunes song-
tagging. There are lots of other add-ons,
including 10-way power seats, heated
steering wheel and smog-sensing air lter.
And the latest safety gear offers a pre-
collision warning system, emergency-
assist button and stolen-vehicle locator
(braking, though, is slower than the Inniti
M37). The hybrid technology is awless,
with the RX 450h performing just like the
regular (and cheaper) RX 350. Ponying up
the extra $6,000 for this hybrid may take
almost nine years to recoup in gas savings,
but your eco cred will be golden.
VW TIGUAN
$23,000
Mpg: 22 city/27 highway
0-to-60 mph: 8.4 seconds
Cargo space: 24 cu. ft.
From golden to, well, Goldilocks. Thats the
best way to describe the refreshed Tiguan,
which is not too frumpy but not too glitzy.
The ride is softer than the Inniti FX37
but sportier than the Lexus RX 450h. Fuel-
efciency, sound insulation and legroom
are likewise in-between the Inniti and the
Lexus. And while the FX37 and RX 450h
are midsizers, the compact Tiguan has
almost as much cargo space as the FX37.
There are some downsides: the Tiguans
four-cylinder is sluggish, especially on
the base model, and the premium eight-
speaker stereo sounds tinny at times.
Still, the panoramic sunroof is huge
and the leatherette vinyl upholstery is
comfortable and easy to clean. Oh, and
the Tiguan is half the price of the FX37 or
the RX 450h a bargain when saving for
the next renovation.

Witty author shares retail
experiences in new book
The holidays are coming. That means
youll need a little extra.
Extra time to go gift shopping, for sure,
and extra closet space in which to hide
packages. More importantly, youll need
extra money for all that buying, which
means youre looking for an extra job.
There are a lot of openings at the mall,
but be careful what you ask for. According
to Freeman Hall in his new book Return
to The Big Fancy, that part-time gig
youll grab might just be extra irritation.
Freeman Hall gured hed done his time
at The Big Fancy, an upscale department
store chain with a Burbank location. Hall
worked the Handbag Jungle, where he
dealt with nasty custys, greedy co-workers
and a store manager he called Suzy Satan.
He put up with them all while bringing home
an insultingly small paycheck so when he
got the chance, he escaped to pursue his
dream of being a screenwriter.
But screenwriting didnt pay the bills.
Working at The Big Fancy did. Shortly after
leaving, it was back to retail hell at Hall.
The new department manager of
Handbag (never purse) Jungle was a
wonderful woman Hall calls Maude and,
since she knew about his past at The Big
Fancy, she was happy to hire him. As a
former handbag manager, Hall brought
experience to the Jungle. He also brought
back his best customers.
As for Hall, everything was familiar and
depressing from the start.
Forbidden to use an elevator or mall
entrance, employees were forced to climb
several ights of stairs to get to work. Every
day began with ear-splitting announcements
and admonishments over the PA system
from Suzy Satan to rally (or annoy) the troops.
Since The Big Fancy paid its sales associates
in commissions, sharking (stealing
customers) was common and destroyed any
sense of teamwork. Rules were loose (unless
you broke them) and commissions could
be retroactively withdrawn, even years later.
The pressure on managers and associates
was intense. Adding to it was that customers
were always right even when they werent
and discount rats always got their way.
It was frustrating. It was irritating. And
it mightve meant a completely horrible
year for Hall, if it wasnt for The Big Fancy
christmas miracle.
So you plan on picking up some hours
at the mall this fall. You might want to pick
up Return to The Big Fancy rst, while
theres still time to run.
Author Freeman Hill is both profound
and profane in this book (although not as
much of the latter as he was in his rst book).
His observations and his propensity for
nickname-giving are both hilarious, but such
snarkiness isnt all youll nd here: there are
a few genuinely wonderful moments at the
store and Hall shares them, too.
While retail-working readers will surely
identify with this book, it will also give
non-retailers a taste of whats behind
the counter. Either way, if youre getting
malled this holiday season, youll need
a laugh and Return to The Big Fancy
packs a lot of extras.

was a DVD (Streisand) was planning to put
out maybe ve, six years ago of all her old
TV appearances but for whatever reason,
it never came out. This guy had a bootleg
copy of it, which was extraordinarily helpful.
Another fan had some of her original
contracts, which is crazy. Who knows how
they get this stuff. Youd think shed have
those herself, but somehow they had them
and those were very helpful as well. And of
course once you get in those fan circles, one
thing leads to another and another. I didnt
write it for the fans, because then youd end
up censoring it to please them, but they
were a great help.
Early signs are good.
A glowing USA Today review said Manns
meticulous research and insightful analysis
go deeper than any previous (Streisand)
biography. Liz Smith called it excellent.
Amazon reader feedback has been highly
positive and perhaps the surest sign that the
writer did his homework, theres been nary
a peep, at least so far, from the Streisand
camp (she devotes a whole section of her
ofcial website to debunking whats written
about her check out the juicy reads on
her tangles with Larry Kramer over a never-
made lm adaptation of The Normal
Heart she wanted to do).
At more than 500 pages, Gorgeous
makes for a lengthy yet brisk read. Mann,
who splits his time between New York
and Provincetown (where he does most
of his writing), is happy to engage a few
questions the book inspires, one common
enough that hes written a Hufngton
Post piece on the topic: that is, surely its
no coincidence that Streisand, who had
several key gay men in her life very early on
in her career, ended up one of the biggest
gay entertainment icons of all time, right?
Its not a coincidence at all, he says.
She was shaped by so many gay inuences
in various ways. The way she dressed,
the way she put a song across, the way she
styled her songs, they way she interacted
with an audience, its so obvious all her early
mentors were gay and I believe that when
those early audiences went to see her,
they responded to something familiar. The
way she laughed, the way she moved, her
campy humor. There was something there
gay men recognized and thought, Oh, we
can relate to this chick. And she was not
the rst one to have this happen either. It
goes all the way back to Mae West and the
drag queens she worked with in New York.
You see it with Judy (Garland) with Roger
Edens, with Joan Crawford and Billy Haines
with Madonna it was the same thing.
And since Mann, with the Taylor and
Streisand books especially, has focused
on the nature of fame and how it was
achieved a dissection of the lucky
breaks versus the raw material another
question occurs: Given Streisands
undeniable talent and famous drive, was
her legend and success inevitable?
Mann says no.
She would like us to think that, but
no, I dont think it was at all. I think she
beneted form some really shrewd
salesmanship and a degree of luck. Just
the fact that there were some major parts
with I Can Get it For You Wholesale and
Funny Girl for unusual looking Jewish
girls, she was lucky that she was there for
those parts at the time they came along.
Of course shes brilliantly talented but
there are lots of people who were. You
hear some of these other singers from
the nightclub era like Blossom Dearie or
Joanna Beretta and youre like, Wow,
theyre every bit as good as Barbra,
but they lacked something either a
very shrewd publicity campaign on their
behalf or perhaps their own ambition
it took a terric amount of PR to make
it happen.

D.C. market continues to
buck national trends
By DAVID BEDIZ
As Halloween and Thanksgiving ap-
proach, we usually start bundling up
and getting ready for winter. But in real
estate, were getting out our sunscreen,
because its a scorcher.
Market conditions have combined in
such a way that we are seeing activity
reminiscent of 2005 and 2008, with almost
every property we list getting multiple of-
fers, and every buyer adding escalation
clauses to their offers in order to win.
Whats causing all this frenzy, just as we
emerge from a recession caused in large
part by a real estate bubble? In addition
to the lowest interest rates ever seen, the
same market forces are at play: simple
supply and demand. The difference is that
the speculators and under-qualied buy-
ers are less of a factor in todays market,
so the activity is hot but not out of control.
Active listings are at ve-year-lows after
a steady and marked decline from 2008.
Meanwhile, new listings, which bounce up
and down seasonally, are at normal levels.
That means that, while houses are being
listed just as consistently as they have in
the past, there are far fewer homes staying
on the market than before.
Data from the Case-Shiller index for
both the region and the nation reect the
result of these market dynamics: higher
home values. For both the Washington
region and the country, home values are
higher than they were both six months
ago and in 2003. In Washington, how-
ever, home values are 32 percent higher
than they were 10 years ago, and about
12 percent higher than they were are the
rock bottom of the housing crisis in 2009.
As a buyer, you should be aware of the
current market conditions so you dont go
blindly into a feeding frenzy for a home you
really love. As a seller, you can be condent
that if you price your home well, you will
likely get a lot of activity. But any Realtor can
attest that just because the market is hot, it
doesnt mean a home will sell at any price.
Only attractively priced homes are getting
multiple offers, and overpriced ones will sit
around until their price is reduced or they
are pulled from the market altogether.
Fall market is hotter than ever
