GRAYLING
It couldnt
have been
scripted any
better than
this.
The unbeaten Grayling
Vikings of coach Tim
Sanchez invade the turf of
the undefeated Boyne City
Ramblers of coach Dave
Hills this Friday and, as
one would expect, there is
much riding on the out-
come.
The winner not only
gets to hoist the 2012 Lake
Michigan Conference
championship trophy but
also earns a truck load of
playoff points. Boyne City
is seeking its first confer-
ence title and first un-
beaten regular season
since 2001 when it went 9-0
en route to a 12-1 mark
and a berth in the Div. 5
semifinals, and Grayling
is looking for its first
league title and the first
undefeated and untied
season in school history.
The Vikings posted a 7-0-1
log in 1970.
Both teams feature ex-
plosive playmakers who
can score with quick-
strike suddenness. The
Vikings averaged 37
points per game and the
Ramblers averaged 27 per
game.
On the other side of the
ball, Grayling permitted
an average of 17 points
per game and Boyne an
average of 13.
A big key in the out-
come will be how well the
opposing teams defense is
able to keep wraps on the
other teams outbreaks on
offense.
A concern for Sanchez
is Boynes overall team
speed.
ByAndySneddon
This, Boyne
City football
coach Dave
Hills says, is
what you play
for, a night a
high school football player
points to through weight-
room sessions, summer
camps, August two-a-days.
And, its something hell
point to long after its
over.
Lifelong memories will
be made on Friday and
a championship decided
when Boyne City and
Grayling meet in a game
that will decide the Lake
Michigan Conference
championship at Boynes
Earl Brotherston Field.
This is, as a program,
what youre working for,
to play meaningful games
at the end of the season,
Hills said. Its going to be
a lot of fun. Theres a lot
of excitement in the
school and in the commu-
nity. A lot of people have
been talking about it for
weeks.
And it shapes up to be
one of those theyll be
talking about for years
after. Both teams are 8-0
overall, 5-0 league. The
Vikings are rankedsev-
enth in the Associated
Press Division 5 state poll.
Both teams are headed
to the playoffs, the Ram-
blers for the first time
since 2009 as they have en-
joyed a resurgence under
Hills, who returned this
season as Boynes head
coach after a three-year
hiatus.
The Ramblers are seek-
ing their first Lake Michi-
gan crown since 2001,

Theyre a tough, disci-
plined, well-coached football
team with some real speed on
the edges, he said.
The great challenge for the
Ramblers will be to try and
corral the vaunted Sanchez
Spread of Grayling, an up-
tempo assault geared to cre-
ate mismatches on every
down.
The engineer of the attack
this year is junior lefty Jake
Swander. All he has done in
his first eight games is throw
for 2,303 yards and 18 touch-
downs.
Swander has a talented
crew of receivers to throw to,
including junior Tyler McCla-
hanan (50 catches for 755
yards and 5 TDs), senior Scott
Parkinson (37 for 436, 5 TDs),
senior Ty Jensen (32 for 398
yards, 5 TDs) and sophomore
Scout Tobin 27 for 400, 2 TDs)
in addition to dependable
Danny Schultz and Justice
Junttila.
What makes it tough to stop
Grayling is the balance in its
attack. Opponents that have
designed their defense to stop
the Viking aerial assault have
found it difficult to contain
the run. The hard-driving
Jensen, who has amassed
more than 1,000 yards rushing
and receiving this season
with a whopping 18 touch-
downs, has averaged nearly 6
yards per carry while accu-
mulating a team-high 674
rushing yards and reaching
the end zone 11 times.
Tobin is another threat as a
runner or receiver. The sweet-
striding sophomore runs the
ball at times out of the wild-
cat formation or takes hand-
offs from Swander from the
slot post and has the speed
and elusiveness to score from
anywhere on the field. Tobin,
who has 336 rushing yards on
just 25 attempts (an average of
13.44 times per carry!) has a
90-yard TD run on his stat
line this season and an 80-
yard TD reception. In the
huge win over St. Francis
midway through the season,
he threw a 6-yard TD to Swan-
der, ran for a 33-yard TD late
in the game and broke loose
for a 62-yard gallop.
Junior Kevin Harris, who
bolsters the Grayling running
attack along with the scrappy
Schultz, has one of the
strongest legs around. He
often boots the ball into the
end zone on kickoffs and he
gives the Vikings a legitimate
field goal threat.
Boynes defense will seek to
find ways to keep the Vikings
from making quick strikes on
Friday. The Ramblers ability
to limit the explosive plays
and force Grayling to earn its
points will go a long way in
determining the outcome of
the contest.
The difficult part of run-
ning the spread is that you
are never really sure what a
team is going to do to you de-
fensively because its so dif-
ferent from what they have
faced all year, Sanchez said.
This is at the same time an
advantage for us if we can ad-
just quickly. However, Im
sure they will use a combina-
tion of pressure and changing
up coverages to try to confuse
us.
We will need to stay poised
and just take advantage of
what the defense is giving us.
No defense can stop every-
thing, so its up to us to find
the weak spots.
Boyne City features a diver-
sified offense with plenty of
speed and plenty of punch
through the air and on the
ground.
Quarterback Corey Redman
is a sophomore who plays
with the savvy of a senior. He
doesnt throw nearly as much
as the Vikings Swander but
he throws accurately and can
hit the big one. Redman and
fellow sophomore Maceo Vro-
man have been a big-play
combination all season. The
duo hooked up for three TDs
in the Ramblers 29-14 victory
over St. Francis. Jamael Kelly
is also a quick-strike threat at
receiver.
Freshman Malik Smith is
built low to the ground and
has a motor that wont quit.
Smith has the power to push
for the short yards and the
breakaway speed to convert
any play into a long gallop.
Brad Fouchia is a passing and
running threat out of the
backfield along with Conner
Mills.
Vroman is an electrifying
kick and punt returner who
can flat out fly. His 95-yard
kickoff return late in the
fourth quarter gave the Ram-
blers a come-from-behind 26-
21 win over Kalkaska in week
three.
The Carnivores of Grayling
defensive coordinator Kevin
OConnell definitely have
their work cut out for them on
Friday.
Boyne runs some quick
motions to get the ball to the
edge, Sanchez said. They
also have great balance in
that they can fake the sweep
and hand it off up the middle
or pass it deep.
If our guys dont read
their keys and caught up with
the motions, it will be a long
night. However, if we stay fo-
cused and disciplined, we will
have a shot.
Lake Michigan title.
The teams appeared on a collision
course as the season progressed and
both defeated longtime Lake Michi-
gan heavyweight Traverse City St.
Francis in back-to-back weeks. The
Vikings notched their first-ever win
over the Gladiators on Sept. 14. One
week later, Boyne knocked off St.
Francis for the first time since that
01 season, when it reached the Divi-
sion 5 state semifinals.
St. Francis left the Lake Michigan
after last season and is now playing
as an independent. Still, those wins
were a sign that both Boyne and
Grayling were for real, and they lit
the match of anticipation that has
grown into an out-and-out inferno.
Hills, ever the pragmatist, tried to
quell talk of the showdown among
his players and took the tried-and-
true one-game-at-a-time approach.
We tried not to (talk about it), he
said. We knew it was there and Im
sure (Grayling) did too and its nice
that it has materialized like it did.
Its going to be a great atmosphere
and theres going to be a whole lot of
excitement from both communities
Im sure.
With Hills returning to the pro-
gram he led to a 69-26 record from
2000-08 there were plenty of un-
knowns entering the season. It
helped that he had remained in the
building as a teacher at Boyne City
during his break from coaching, but
with so many young players filling
key roles, nobody was certain how
competitive or good the Ram-
blers might be.
Sophomore Corey Redman, who
has already made a verbal commit-
ment to play basketball at Central
Michigan, is the quarterback and
his top receiver is another sopho-
more, Maceo Vroman. The leading
rusher is freshman fullback Malik
Smith. Three other sophomores,
Michael Dohm, Connor Beebe and
Max Cuper, have also played key
roles.
Hills and his staff have been able
to blend those newcomers with sen-
ior veterans such as Brady Calo, a
two-way starting lineman;
guard/linebacker Elliott Hausler;
and linebacker/halfback Alan Man-
ross. Senior running back Jamael
Kelly has also emerged as a threat.
As the youngsters have matured
and the entire team has gelled,
Boyne has gotten progressively bet-
ter. The Ramblers first four wins
each came by eight points or less but
the operative word is wins
theyve won while learning and
growing up.
Offensively I think our level of
execution is a lot better than it was
the first three, four weeks, Hills
said. As the season has progressed I
think weve continued to improve in
both the passing and running
games.
Certainly the season has played
out very well for us. It couldnt have
played out any better. Weve been
fortunate, but weve created some
good fortune by playing good foot-
ball.
I think weve continued to im-
prove and the competition continues
to improve and so the games get
more and more exciting. I think
were all very excited about the posi-
tion weve created for ourselves
here. From here on out, theyll just
keep getting bigger.
Win or lose on Friday, the Ram-
blers are headed to the playoffs. That
was the norm in Hills first tenure
as Boynes coach. They finished 4-5
in his first season, 2000, then reeled
off nine straight post-season appear-
ances.
The playoffs will be new for most
of these kids, he said. This game
(against Grayling) is going to have
that playoff atmosphere and a lot of
things around it and itll be real im-
portant for us to handle that appro-
priately and keep that in
perspective.

ELK RAPIDS The Boyne City
Ramblers used a strong defensive
second half and applied equal
pressure on the Elks defense as
they turned an eight point deficit
into a 14 point victory on October
12, in getting by Elk Rapids 44-30
in a Lake Michigan Conference
contest.
Boyne City found themselves
down in the opening quarter by a
pair of touchdowns and looking
at an up hill battle, when sopho-
more quarterback Corey Redman
hooked up with senior Jamael
Kelly for a 63-yard touchdown
pass, and after Austin Gardner
added the point after, it was 14-7.
Redman would add a 1-yard
score early in the second quarter,
he would also connect with Con-
ner Beebe for a two-point conver-
sion and later in the quarter,
freshman running back Malik
the machine Smith pounded it
in from just over 1-yard out,
along with a successful extra
point from Gardner, knotted the
score at 22-22.
The Elks would add their final
score of the night just before the
halftime whistle, and a 30-22 lead.
We were sluggish in the first
half, but were able to keep the
score close, Rambler coach
David Hills said. We played bet-
ter in the second half on both
sides of the ball.
After a scoreless third, Boyne
opened the fourth with another
Redman 1-yard plunge, Dale Tar-
ket added the two-point conver-
sion to tie the game again at 30-30
with just under ten minutes re-
maining.
Boyne took the lead for good
about two minutes later as Red-
man took off for a 43-yard run,
and with a Gardner PAT, the
Ramblers led 37-30.
Boyne City added some dis-
tance between themselves and
the Elks shortly after that as
Smith raced 43 yards to paydirt
for the final score of the evening,
44-30 after Gardner's extra point.
It's a big win for us, Hills
added. It sets up a chance at a
conference championship at
home against Grayling.
Redman led the Ramblers of-
fensively, completing 5-of-14
passes for 141 yards and a touch-
down, and added 46 yards rush-
ing on four attempts and three
TD's.
Smith carried 21 times for 136
yards and two scores, Kelly
caught three passes for 112 yards
and rushed nine times for 71, and
Bradley Fouchia had 43 yards
rushing on seven carries and one
reception for 17 yards.
On the defensive side of the
ball, Brady Calo had 12 tackles
and a pick, Alan Manross fin-
ished with 11, Mills added 10 and
fumble recovery, Zach Wandrie
wrapped up nine Elks and Tarket
recovered two fumbles.

23 in a Lake Michigan Conference
contest on October 9.
The whole team contributed to
this win and it was very bal-
anced, Charleovix coach Audra
Randall said. The tremendous
play from this weekend rolled
into this match and you can see
them playing in better rhythm.
Some intense rallies with Elk
Rapids were exciting to watch
and both teams doing whatever
they could to win each rally.
Karley Pearsall finished with 17
kills, 13 digs, five blocks, while
Madeline Boss added 14 kills, 10
digs and three aces and a block.
Also for the Rayders, Katie

We are starting to get back in
our grove, and I thought Paige
(Hornbeck) stepped up her play
tonight, Rambler coach Casie
Parker said. We had a nice
crowd for our pink game tonight
and we would like to thank every-
one for coming.

EAST JORDAN The visiting
Ramblers were able to knock off
the Lady Red Devils in a hard
fought four game match 25-17, 21-
25, 27-25, 25-18 in a Lake Michigan

assists and six aces.
Also for the Ramblers, Erin
Baker added 25 digs, Mary Myers
11 kills and both Baker and Myers
served at 100 percent.
East Jordan played well
tonight, they were getting every-
thing up and have improved
greatly, Boyne coach Casie
Parker said. We are slowly get-
ting back on track and experi-
menting with our line-up, I also
thought Erin (Baker) played well
tonight defensively.
For East Jordan, Valerie Peters
had seven kills, 14 digs, two
blocks and one assist; Angela

GRAYLING The East Jordan
Red Devils faced a tough
Grayling Vikings team and were
able to put up some good num-
bers agaisnt them, but ultimately
fell 63-29 on October 12 in a Lake
Michigan Conference match-up.
The Vikings improved to 8-0
overall, 5-0 conference, took care
of business in setting up their
championship showdown
against Boyne City on October
19.
For Grayling, Jake Swander
tied a school record six touch-
downs, while going 23-of-44 pass-
ing for 362 yards in leading the
Vikings to the win.
Also for Grayling, Tyler Mc-
Clanahan finished with 125 yards
receiving with one TD, Scott
Parkinson 94 yards and three
scores, Danny Schultz had 88
yards and Ty Jensen 45 yards
and two touchdowns.
East Jordan was led by Noah
Bacchus with 65 yards on 11 car-
ries and added three receptions
for 48 yards and a pair of touch-
downs, while Dustin Hejka added
47 yards rushing and a score in
addition to 48 yards receiving.
Ben Walton carried seven
times for 57 yards, Tim Schut
added a touchdown on 25 yards
rushing, and Jay Graham added
201 all-purpose yards between
his duties as a returner and run-
ning back.
The Red Devils D was led by
Graham's 10 tackles, while Bac-
chus and Schut finished with
eight wrap ups each, Walton
chipped in with five, and Hejka
and Jack Holbrook added five
stops each.
East Jordan fell to 0-8 overall,
0-5 conference, and will travel to
Charlevoix for the season finale
for the two rivals.

Young Red Devils
improving
EAST JORDAN The young
Red Devils were able to hang
with the Vikings for the first
half, but a strong Grayling third
quarter helped put the game out
of reach as Grayling defeated
East Jordan 42-6 on October 11.
The East Jordan defensive line
of Hector Paz, Nash Johnston
and Thomas Brandell were cred-
ited by coach Greg Kitson for ap-
plying the pressure needed to
keep the Viking passing game in
check.
Wyatt Crick, Skyler Schuler,
Brandell and Andrew Halbert led
the team defensively, while Bob
Sherman and Crick had an inter-
ception and Schuler recovered a
fumble.
The EJ offensive line of James
Brown, Alex Herriman, Mark
Dehaan, Sherman and Schuler
did not give up a sack all night.
Crick, Bailey Sargent led the
rushing attack and Brandell and
Sargent were the leading re-
ceivers with Sargent on the re-
ceiving end of a Noah Raymond
touchdown pass.
I really like where we are
with this new offense, and im
very proud of how far we have
come, Coach Kitson said. We
played our best half of football
against Grayling and played well
for three quarter, now we just
have to put it together for all four
quarters this week against
Charlevoix.
Viking offense too
much for Red Devils

Charming turn-of-the-century
home in Boyne City
ByJimAkans
This weeks feature listing simply feels
like home.
Located just a few blocks from down-
town Boyne City, this turn-of-the-century
(the century before this one!) home has a
unique and welcoming character that is
rarely achieved today.
Highlights include beautiful wood floor-
ing, a natural light filled kitchen space
with lots of cabinet storage, and a large
living room with cozy corner wood stove.
There are four bedrooms and one-and-a-
half baths, and one of the upstairs bed-
rooms features a separate room that would
make an ideal nursery or home office. The
main two levels have approximately 1,600
square feet of living space combined, and
there is a Michigan basement for addi-
tional storage needs.
Outdoors, the home sits on a beautiful
corner lot, and there is an attached one-
and-a-half car garage situated on the rear
of the home.
Located at 303 Cedar Street in Boyne
City, this home is listed at $89,900. For a
more information or to arrange a tour, call
Marty Moody or Chris Christensen at
Lyndas Real Estate Service in Boyne City
at 231-582-9555 or email at Marty@lyndas-
realestateservice.com or Chris@lyndas-

Part 2 of 2
Do you have an
emergency fund?
Before you de-
vote all your sav-
ings into a down
payment or up-
keep for your
house, look at the
bigger picture.
You need to build
a financial cush-
ion in case of fi-
nancial setbacks like unexpected
unemployment or serious illness.
Its not just money that should
affect your decision to buy a home.
Are you flexible when it comes
to getting what you want?
Your first home may not have all
the bells and whistles youre look-
ing for. Are you willing to defer on
your wish list now in order to have
a home of your own? In a few
years, you may be able to find a
home that better suits your needs,
but in the meantime you could
also consider fixing up a less ex-
pensive home, buying a home with
friends or renting out part of your
home for additional income.
Do you plan to move in
three to fve years?
There is a lot of effort, time and
cost involved in buying a house
you want to make your investment
pay off for you. In addition to the
price of the house itself, you
should also take into the set-up
costs already mentioned.
If youre planning to move in a
year for work or school, you may
want to wait until after that time.
Otherwise, you might find yourself
in a tough spot if youre forced to
sell your home for less than its
purchase price in a slow market.
Do you enjoy home improvement?
If youre already looking at
homes, its hard not to imagine
how adding a fresh coat of paint to
the walls or changing the light fix-
tures will make a house truly
yours. But if youre used to calling
the landlord for anything that goes
awry in your home, owning a
house might be a jarring wake-up
call. When you own your house,
any issue becomes your responsi-
bility, from replacing blown elec-
trical fuses to installing a new
roof.
Now is the time to consider
whether you enjoy home improve-
ment projects. Are you confident
in your ability to patch drywall or
install a ceiling fan, or would you
rather pay someone else to do it? If
its the latter, consider that even if
you hire someone else to handle
your home improvement issues,
you will still have to invest not
only money but your time by re-
searching contractors and super-
vising their work.
Complimentsof
