iente definisce il carattere dellarchitettura meglio della sua aspirazione a vincere la forza di gravit e dello stile con cui si cercato di esprimere questo desiderio. Il Vanke Center, il grattacielo orizzontale di Shenzhen sulla costa del mar Cinese meridionale, si sviluppa in lunghezza quanto lEmpire State Building di New York si sviluppa in altezza. Sospeso su otto nuclei portanti, galleggia nellaria e solleva con s losservatore, come unonda immensa fa con il surfista che la cavalca. Solo il Museo Lina Bo Bardi a San Paolo del Brasile, anchesso una struttura a ponte, comunica, forse, una sensazione simile. In entrambi i progetti, la volont di preservare la continuit dello spazio pubblico al di sotto della costruzione stata fondamentale: la scelta di sollevare questa enorme struttura invece che singoli volumi pi piccoli, ognuno con uno specifico programma , mantenendola al di sotto del limite di altezza di 35 metri, riesce a liberare il pi ampio spazio pubblico possibile, lasciando che acqua e vegetazione lo conquistino. Gli antichi credevano che i corpi celesti fossero guidati da angeli. Qui, invece, una struttura di acciaio, per la maggior parte nascosta, a rappresentare lineffabile mistero di un corpo tanto grande sospeso. La sua complessa geometria, che ha richiesto unaccurata progettazione, contribuisce a creare passaggi di grande ispirazione nelle giunture fra uno spazio e laltro. Alcuni elementi di acciaio si svelano negli angoli, fra i pilastri e il pavimento, e aggiungono un ulteriore effetto di sorpresa. Ledificio ha una struttura che combina la tecnologia usata per i ponti sospesi su cavi con il cemento ad alta resistenza. Si tratta di una delle prime costruzioni di questo tipo e alcuni dei suoi tiranti sostengono un peso record di oltre 3000 tonnellate. La parte inferiore del Vanke Center diventa la sesta facciata delledificio, e le sue finestre offrono viste a 360 gradi sul lussureggiante panorama tropicale al di sotto. Una scala di acciaio allimprovviso sale dal terreno e penetra nella pelle delledificio, come fosse lingresso a unastronave aliena atterrata l da un altro pianeta. Il Vanke Center una struttura ibrida, con appartamenti, un hotel e uffici per la China Vanke Co. Gravity and Grace

is fulfilled. The Horizontal Skyscraper-Vanke Center in Shenzhen on the South Sea of China is as long as the Empire State Building in New York is high. Suspended on eight core structures on which it floats above the ground, it gives the observer a lift as if he were a surfer riding a very large wave. Perhaps only the Lina Bo Bardi Museum in So Paulo had a comparable inspiration, also with its similar bridge-like structure. In both projects the desire to maintain the continuity of the public space underneath was a strong incentive to suspend the body of the building well above the ground. Indeed, the choice to float an immense structure right under the 35-meter height limit, instead of several smaller structures each with its own specific program, generates the largest possible green and water grounds open to the public. If the ancients conceived of the heavenly bodies as driven by angels, here, a largely hidden, steel structure creates the ineffable mystery of suspending such a large body in the air. The demanding geometry of its section and structure contribute to dramatic spatial moments in the junction between one space and another. Some steel elements revealed in corners, between columns and floor, add an element of the unexpected. The eight cores stand as far as 50 meters apart, while the buildings structure is a combination of cable-stay bridge technology merged with a high-strength concrete frame. of its type, some of its tension cables carry a record load of just over 3000 tons. The underside of the floating structure becomes its sixth elevation from which windows offer 360-degree views over the lush tropical landscape below. At one point a steel staircase penetrates the skin of the building at the bottom, as if it were an entrance to an alien ship from another planet. The Vanke Center is a hybrid building, including apartments, a hotel, and offices for the headquarters of China Vanke Co. Ltd. A conference center, spa and parking lot are located under a vast green landscape, which is characterized by mounds containing restaurants, a swimming pool and a 500-seat auditorium. Situated in a sea side resort, Dameisha, outside the city of Shenzhen and not far from Hong Kong, this building faces the sea some 500 meters from the waterfront. Unlike most buildings in this town, Holls Horizontal Skyscraper not only resurrects dreams of past generations of Megaform/Megastructure, but it does so in a manner which retains a large variety of interiors and a constant shift in direction. Rhizomatic in plan, it provides an endless play on the inside/outside experience. It is as if we are characters in a Michelangelo Antonioni movie, yet without the corresponding sense of anxiety. Thanks to the formidable amount of daylight, one never loses orientation. Walking across and up and down the building, one is constantly provided with new vistas outside and new configurations inside.

The site area is approximately 60,000 sqm: the 75% is green and further 15,000 sqm are of planted roof area. The land with his courts tucked in between the volumes and accessible from a public path has a series of vegetated mounds and hollowed-out sections. The latter ensure that light reaches the communal basement and underground spaces or have been turned into pools that cool the air.

Diverso dalla maggior parte degli edifici della citt, il grattacielo orizzontale di Steven Holl non solo ha il merito di riportare in vita i sogni di megaforma/ megastruttura della passata generazione, ma riesce anche a offrire unampia variet di ambienti interni e una grande dinamicit in ogni direzione. Con la sua pianta a rizoma, permette di sperimentare in molti modi il passaggio tra interno ed esterno; ci si sente come personaggi di un film di Michelangelo Antonioni, ma senza il loro turbamento. Grazie alla notevole quantit di luce solare che penetra allinterno delledificio, non si perde mai lorientamento; passeggiando, si aprono ai nostri occhi scenari sempre nuovi sugli esterni, o originali configurazioni degli ambienti interni. Alcune delle facciate orientate a sud beneficiano di una seconda pelle di brise soleil in alluminio, controllati meccanicamente da sensori o regolabili manualmente. Laltezza della facciata di vetro, protetta dal sole e dal vento grazie a persiane fisse in alluminio traforato, garantisce

che la luce del sole penetri nelledificio tutto lanno. Raggiungere leccellenza unimpresa difficile e rara, che si guadagna con la pratica, e questo edificio beneficia dellesperienza dei progetti Edge of the City, nei quali lesistenza urbana si concretizza in strutture a una scala sufficientemente grande da riprodurre i ritmi e le funzioni della vita nella citt. Qui a Shenzhen, una citt che ha completamente ignorato queste considerazioni e che quasi del tutto priva di esperienza urbana, Steven Holl, Li Hu e il loro team hanno avuto la fortunata opportunit di realizzare un programma molto ambizioso; hanno regalato alla citt un edificio da imitare e migliorare, che incoragger i bambini che giocano alla sua ombra a costruirsi un futuro promettente; hanno creato una struttura accuratamente pensata e studiata nei dettagli e sul piano della sostenibilit, che rappresenta un forte segno di emancipazione in un paese vastissimo, in cui gran parte del paesaggio costruito ha un valore puramente strumentale; un sollevamento non solo fisico, ma profondamente umano.

Some faades facing south benefit from a double skin with aluminium brise soleil. Some of these are mechanically controlled by sensors, others are manually adjusted. The height of the glass faade offers daylight deep into the building during all four seasons of the year. It is protected from the sun and the wind by porous louvers. If excellence is both difficult and rare, this building has followed on the many variations of the Edge of the City Projects, in which intense urban experience was conceived as possible only in large enough structures that would be able to accommodate a program commensurable with city life. Here in Shenzhen, a city that on the whole has neglected such considerations, Holl was extremely fortunate in being given the chance to execute such a program. The challenge of this program in a small city with almost no urban experience inspired Steven Holl, Li Hu and their team to embrace the opportunity to exercise their greatest gift: by offering the city a building that could only be emulated and improved upon, which will encourage the children playing under its shadow to build themselves a more promising future. Executed with great attention to detail and environmental impact, it is a towering achievement to erect such a thoughtful and considered structure in this immense country in which so much of the built environment is merely instrumental. Its uplift is not only physical, but deeply human.

With the aim of the fully accessibility, the complex hosts private functions (Vankes offices, the section called SOHO and the apartments) and public (the hotel, located at the North-East extremity where the building is closer to the ground, and the park). Per la realizzazione del suo quartier generale, la Vanke Co., la pi importante societ di real estate della Cina, bandisce nel 2006 un concorso che Steven Holl si aggiudica con il progetto per un grattacielo orizzontale su pilotis. Il Vanke Center un enorme complesso a uso misto dalla forma organica e snodata, sospeso su un parco pubblico. La superficie complessiva di 120.000 mq distribuita su pi livelli in volumi gemmati dalla linea spezzata del corpo centrale; la complessit volumetrica risolta con percorsi pubblici allesterno e collegamenti interni accuratamente progettati sia dal punto di vista delle relazioni funzionali sia delle tecnologie e dei materiali, per garantire la massima flessibilit, mentre la molteplicit delle superfici espressa dalle facciate 26 in totale , caratterizzate da rivestimenti diversi a seconda dellorientamento solare. Oltre ad avere una struttura resistente agli tsunami, per i materiali naturali e riciclabili impiegati, i pannelli fotovoltaici in copertura (1400 mq), i sistemi di raccolta e riuso dellacqua e lo studio del soleggiamento e dellaerazione per il massimo risparmio energetico, tra i primi edifici della Cina a possedere la certificazione LEED Platinum.

Inhabited branches
Chinas biggest real estate company Vanke Co. launched the competition for its new headquarters in 2006, and the winner was Steven Holls design for a horizontal skyscraper raised up off the ground on pilotis. The Vanke Center is a huge mixed-use complex with an elaborate organic form, suspended over a public park. The 120,000 sqm of floor space spreads over several levels with volumes that branch off from the twisting central body. This complex volume is organised with public walkways on the outside and an interior circulation scheme, carefully designed in terms of functional relationships and the technologies and materials used, to guarantee maximum flexibility. The multiplicity of surfaces is clearly seen in the faades 26 in all which are variously clad depending on the way they face the sun. The complex has a tsunami-proof hovering structure and with its use of natural, recyclable materials, solar panels on the roof (1,400 sqm), systems to collect and reuse water and the study of exposure to sunlight and wind to keep energy consumption to a minimum, it is one of first buildings in China to be granted LEED Platinum certification.
