1. WHAT IS LIGHT? Light is a part of the energy (a flock of electromagnetic radiations) that people perceive throug the visual sense. Light propagates in a straight line. Light displays objects and can be reflected totally or partly. -When rays of light come into contact with a white surface such as snow, it is totally reflected. -When rays of light come into contact with a black surface it is totally absorbed. -When rays of light come into contact with a coloured surface, for example a red hat, only part of the rays are reflected back ( the rays corresponding to the colour of the hat, red in this case). We can see reality because of light and we can also represent reality with it. So for this task it is useful to understand luminous tone. Luminous tone is the different grade of lightness or darkness reflected by objects or people. Different tones produce different sensations. For example, light tones tent to enlarge themselves and they are perceived as bigger than they actually are. Contrary to this, dark tones tend to minimize themselves and are perceived smaller than they really are.

This explains why someone wearing black seems to be slimmer than someone wearing white. On the other hand, each tone is modified by tones nearby. So, a light tone surrounded by a dark one will be perceived as much lighter than it actually is. Also, a dark tone surrounded by a light one will be perceived as much darker. Coloured surfaces have got different grades of darkness and lightness. Furthermore, we can compare them with a grey scale from black to white.

TYPES OF LIGHT In connection with producing light, we have: 1. Natural light, or light that comes from the sun or the moon. 2. Artificial light or light that comes from an artificial focus( ie. spotlight), or one that is manmade.

In connection with the direction of the light, we have: 1. Direct/hard light, when rays of light come into contact directly with objects. Direct light is also called hard light because it produces really strong light contrast. 2. Non direct light, when rays of light come into contact with surfaces after coming into contact with others surfaces. For example, we have got non direct light on a cloudy day when rays of sun go through clouds and are split into many directions.

TIPES OF SHADOWS Shadow is the part of the object that does not receive light. - With objects or people, shadows are the non lighted part of the object or person. - With a cast shadow, a shadow is cast by an object when it receives light. - With half-light or semidarkness, it is the zone of transition between light and shadow.

1. Front light: when light is in front of us. This type of lightning does not create shades on to objects but produces a sensation of a flat surface.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LIGHT WITH THE BARROQUE STYLE

The term Baroque is used to describe the art, sculpture, architecture and music of the seventeenth century. Baroque originates from the Portuguese word barocco, "a pearl of irregular form". The spirit of the seventeenth century had a strong influence on the arts. The seventeenth century was "ushered in on a wave of tremendous intellectual, physical, and spiritual activity". As a result of the Protestant Reformation, the rise of the Mercantile System, absolutism in government and advances in science, this new spirit emerged. The arts during the Baroque period create a feeling of movement, energy and tension. Strong contrasts of light and shadow and an infinite amount of space are evident. Intense spirituality and realism are usually present. "The artist would often portray the figures as individuals with

their own personalities, to capture the inner workings of the mind and to portray the passions of the soul on their faces". Baroque art is known for being very exaggerated.

CONTRAST This is a large difference between two things; for example, hot and cold, green and red, light and shadow. Closely related to emphasis, a principle of design, this term refers to a way of juxtaposing elements of art to stress the differences between them. Thus, a painting might have bright color which contrast with dark colors, or angular shapes which contrast with curvaceous shapes. Used in this way, contrast can excite, emphasize and direct attention to points of interest.

In this sense we can talk about the Chiaroscuro (English pronunciation: /kirskjro/, Italian: [kjaroskuro] "light-dark") an art that is characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. It is also a technical term used

by artists and art historians for using contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in modeling three-dimensional objects such as the human body.
