here are historical references to a mill(s) in Killossery going back as far as the 1600s (1685 the millrace and mill are mentioned in The History of County Dublin by John DAlton published in 1838) but as to who owned or ran it remains a complicated succession of lease holders. The first positive reference to a Delany owning/running the mill is Richards son Joseph who holds a lease for the land from William Mead Smythe in 1831 and 186?. He is also listed as leasing the land from A.G. Lewis, Esq., (probably the agent for Mead Smythe) in the Griffith Valuation of 1847. The description of the holding is House, offices, corn and wheat mill, kiln and land. The land consisted of 7 acres, 2 roods, 0 perches. The net annual value of the land was 8, 11 shillings. The net annual value of the buildings was 16, 10 shillings. The total net annual value (I assume total annual rent payable by Joseph) was 25, 1 shilling. By 1901 the land and mill are owned by the Delany family.

(Front of house was an off-licence and shop living quarters behind and above) The Delany family leased/owned the land and mill from 1831 (probably longer) until 1950 when Christopher Delany died and left his estate to Josie Daly (his housekeeper her father had bailed Christopher out when he got into financial difficulties on the understanding that the property went to Josie when Christopher died). The mill remained in the Daly family until August 2011 when it was sold to Pat McDonagh who may be prepared to restore the mill. (See sales video of mill to see condition of inside in 2011 some stills are included in the source documents). Page | 10
Richard Delany
Richard was born c. 1763 most likely in Killossery. His wife was Mary, maiden name unknown, and they probably married about 1784 (assuming Mary had to be 18). They have at least 3 children, Joseph (1792), Elizabeth (1797) and Laurence (1807). Richard died on 15th July 1818 aged 52. His son Joseph erects a headstone on the family plot in Killossery cemetery. Mary died on 11th February 1829 aged 63 (so born c. 1766). Both Richard and Mary are relatively long lived for the time which suggests they were comfortably circumstanced (if Richard was running the mill this would account for it but this can only be supposition).

Joseph Delany
Joseph was born c. 1792 in Killossery. He married Jane (maiden name unknown) at the earliest in 1831. There is some evidence that they had about 9 children (2 more which need to be verified Michael & Josephine). Joseph died on 15th December 1866 of chronic bronchitis. Jane died on 19th April 1879 of gastritis she was 66 years of age. Both are buried in Killossery cemetery in the family plot.

Laurence Delany
Laurence was born c. 1807. Laurence dies on 7/3/1870 aged 69 at the mill. His death certificate states he was a bachelor. He is buried with his parents and grandparents in Killossery Cemetery. His death notice says he died after a long and tedious illness at Killossery Mills. His death is registered by Joseph Delany (his nephew his brother Joseph predeceased him).

Richard Delany
Richard was born around 1839 in Killossery, the eldest son of Joseph the local miller and his wife Jane. He married Mary-Jane McCormick the eldest daughter of Edward McCormick from Lispopple on 24th October 1869 in Rolestown church. See Notice opposite from the Nation Newspaper on 13th November 1869. The witnesses were Daniel Archbold (the Archbolds are cousins but not sure the exact relationship) and Margaret McCormick, Mary-Janes sister. Richard put his occupation as miller (his father died 3 years earlier). Richard and Mary-Jane go on to have 14 children (this includes stillborn twins in 1895). Their daughters Mary and Jane Clare fall victim to diphtheria and die within weeks of each other in the winter of 1887/88. The youngest son Edward married around 1902. The other sons, Joseph and Christopher never married. Five of the girls marry post 1911 so it would appear that Richard and Mary-Jane only saw some of their grandchildren (May & Denis Delanys children and Edward & Helenas Delanys children) before they died. By 1901 the property at Killossery is a substantial one including 16 outbuildings and farmland and of course the flour mill. Richards brother Laurence acted as steward and Richards two sons Joseph and Christopher were working the farm with him. The house incorporated a pub and shop and so the family must have been relatively well off. They also employed a domestic servant. Richards brother, Christopher, owned and ran a tobacconist shop and billiard room in Dublin City initially at 36 Lower Sackville Street (now OConnell Street) and from 1901 at 27 North Earl Street. Christopher died in July 1901 from heart disease and it appears that Richard then moved to Dublin with most of the family to take over the running of the tobacconists. The business also included the lease on a tobacconist stall at Westland Row Station.
After Christophers death there appears to have been some legal wrangling in the family as to bequests left to Mary Teresa Archbold (a cousin of the Delanys who was working in the shop with Christopher), and the Mater Hospital (See appendix for article on same). The courts upheld the bequest for Mary but declared the one for the Mater as void. The funding of the bequest was to be from the premises at North Earl Street and the one at Westland Row Station. I have not found out much about the Westland Row business but from the newspaper article about the will of Christopher it looks to have been a lease on a stall selling cigars and cigarettes. I do recall my Aunt Joan talking about an aunt working there. A further court case appears in the newspaper in January 1933. The Delany girls were the chief beneficiaries in Christophers will (confirmed by Richards will).
In April 1916 the Easter Rising occurs and in the ensuing battle between the Irish rebels and the British army large areas of OConnell Street and the surrounding area are destroyed. Unfortunately, Richards shop is completely destroyed by fire (see National Archives Claim Form submitted by Richard) and some of the family must have returned to Killossery (thankfully no one appears to have been injured). My gut feeling is that the older girls stayed in Dublin as Josephine who died in March 1919 had an address at 5 Merrion Row and Alacoque was living in Merrion Row at the time of her marriage in 1923. The premises in North Earl Street were rebuilt in 1918, but was taken over by Duffys who still own and run a curtain and bedding business there (as at 2012). The Government eventually paid out compensation to all those affected by 1916 who had lost property or sustained injury. Full details of Richards claim are in a document contained in the Source material Tab on this site. Page | 18

Figure 10: Goud Insurance Map Showing Destruction after the 1916 Rising
Richard died on the 15th July 1919 (cause of death senility and cardiac failure), aged 83 years. However, it is hard to believe that the destruction of the premises and their home would not have had a huge effect on him and his health and probably contributed to his death. Mary-Jane died a year later on 14th June 1920 (cause of death the same as Richard). Both were interred in Killossery cemetery in the family plot. See McCormick history for more detail on Mary-Janes family history.

Article from Irish Times Damage to more than 200 buildings estimated at 3M The cost of the fire damage to buildings and stock in the city of Dublin was later estimated by the chief fire officer, Capt Purcell, as 2.5 million. More than 200 buildings were damaged, he told the Weekly Irish Times on May 1st, 1916. As his estimate of damages was based on rateable valuations, figure of 3 million now looks more realistic. Sackville Street, now O'Connell Street, was very badly hit. From Cathedral Street and Earl Street, an area fronted by Clery's department store was destroyed south to the Liffey. Hopkins and Hopkins, the jewellery shop on the corner of Eden Quay, was gone as was the entire series of blocks enclosed by Sackville Street to the west, and Marlborough Street to the north. This amounted to 27,000 square yards of prime city centre property. Among the buildings damaged or destroyed were Clery's warehouse, the Royal Hibernian Academy, Wynn's hotel, the Imperial hotel, branches of the Munster and Leinster bank and the Hibernian bank. Public houses were hit, Nagle's and Sheridan's on North Earl Street and two branches of the famous Mooney's chain, one in Lower Abbey Street, the other on Eden Quay. On the other side of the capital's wide main street, the devastation was as bad. Fire had raged from the GPO towards the Liffey, reaching back along Henry Street to Henry Place and Moore Street, advancing towards Liffey Street, almost as far as the Irish Independent's printing works on Middle Abbey Street. On the Sackville Street frontage, the Metropole Hotel, standing between Eason and the GPO, was gone, and with it adjoining buildings including the Oval bar. Thom's printing works was destroyed. The area affected by fire on this side of Sackville Street amounted to 34,000sq ft. What Capt Purcell describes as the "great fire" began in an auxiliary printing office owned by The Irish Times on Lower Abbey Street, backing on to Seville Place, at the side of Clery's on Thursday April 27th. As the firing made deployment too dangerous, "All I could do was to observe through a glass from our tower [on Tara Street] the progress of the flames." Page | 23
From his vantage point, Capt Purcell could see Clery's burning. "I was hoping against hope it might withstand the fire but before morning it had gone the way of the rest." And with it went hopes that it might act as a fire break. The ceasefire on Saturday meant that the firemen could work in comparative safety. Or so they thought. "We were making excellent progress on both sides of Abbey street when the bullets began to fly among us." So the two motor tenders and the fire crews were withdrawn. The news came at 5.30pm that Nagle's public house in 1North Earl Street was burning furiously and Hickey's shop and Boyer's warehouse were at risk. Lieut John Myers and four men volunteered to tackle this outbreak. "They insured the safety of the remainder of the north side of Earl Street, including the cathedral at the back."

Joseph Delany
Joseph (Richards brother) was born around 1840 in Killossery and died on 14/8/1912. He appears to be buried in Killossery. He is described as the occupier of Killossery Mill on the death cert of his sister Jane Marcella in 1868. Perhaps all of the brothers are working the mill. However, he is not in the 1901 or 1911 census for Killossery. I have found census details which may refer to him in Dublin city but cannot find his death cert for the date in question needs further investigation.

Christopher Delany
Christopher was born around 1851 and was the youngest son of Joseph Delany. From 1891 he owned and ran a tobacconist shop in Dublin City initially at 36 Lower Sackville Street (now OConnell Street) and from 1901 at 27 North Earl Street; the business also incorporates a lease on a tobacconist stall in Westland Row station. Christopher added a billiard room to the North Earl Street property. There was amble living accommodation above the shop. He never married and in April 1901 on the night of the census Christopher had two visitors Mary and Catherine Archbold but I believe one or both were actually shop assistants (they were his cousins). His niece Teresa was also at the premises. Christopher died in July 1901 from heart disease aged 52. His death was registered by his cousin John Archbold who was in attendance at his death at North Earl Street. He was buried in Glasnevin cemetery. The above Mary Archbold was a major beneficiary of his will.

In 1913, Richard (now living and running the business probably since Christopher died) goes to court over questions in relation to Christophers will (see Appendix 2 for details). An interesting item from this clipping: The deceased died possessed of estate to the amount of 5,000; a considerable amount of money at the time. Three of Richards children to go court again in 1933 regarding this will. See Source documents for further details. The National Archives lists Christophers will (unfortunately was destroyed in 1922). Probate was granted to Edward McCormick, farmer and Richard Delany, shopkeeper. Effects listed as 1,157 9s 1d.

Joseph Delany
Joseph was born 2/8/1871, eldest child of Richard Delany and Mary Jane McCormick. His baptismal sponsors were Joseph Delany (uncle) and Mary McCormick (aunt). Joseph never married. In 1901, aged 29, he was working for his father at the mill and farm in Rolestown. His brother Christopher and Uncle Lawrence were also working the mill and farm. In July 1901, his uncle Christopher died in Dublin and sometime afterwards, his father, mother and most of his siblings leave the mill and move to Dublin. In 1911, Joseph was head of the household (although his father is still the owner) and is working the farm with Christopher working as a grocer and Lawrence running the mill; his sister Elizabeth is working as the barmaid. Josephine Daly is employed as a domestic servant. Joseph passed away on 22 April 1935 aged 64. His nephew Rev. John Delany said the funeral mass and he was buried in the family plot in Killossery.

Christopher Delany
Christy Delany was born on 3rd December 1873 in Killossery and baptised in Rolestown church. His sponsors were Laurence and Teresa McCormick. Like his brother Joseph, Christy did not marry and in 1901 was working at the Delany Mill and farm at Rolestown. In 1911 he described himself as a grocer, the shop being part of the Delany holding. In 1935 his eldest brother Joseph died and Christy becomes the owner of the mill and farm. Figure 15: Christy
Christy continues to run the mill, shop and off-licence with the help of Josephine & XXXX Daly who lived at the mill with him. There is a suggestion that Christy and Josephine were on friendly terms but they certainly never married. Josephines father is supposed to have bailed out Christy financially when he got into difficulty on the understanding that the mill was left to Josephine on his death. Christy became ill and was bed-ridden for the last year or so of his life. The Daly sisters cared for him and kept everything going. Some of the farmland behind the mill was sold off by the Daly family some years ago. The mill remained in the Daly family up to August 2011 when it was sold to Mr. Pat McDonagh (Pat also provided the site for the new primary school in Rolestown). It is believed that Pat has both the resources and the desire to restore the mill.

In 1933, along with May and Teresa, Lily goes to court over the will of her uncle Christopher. (See Appendices). John died on 26th July 1938 aged 73 and was buried in Glasnevin. In the electoral register for 1939 Elizabeth and Mary are living alone at 37 Marguerite Road, Glasnevin. Marguerite Road is quite close to De Courcy Square where Edward lived. Mary married Eamonn (Edward) Hoare in September 1953. At some stage after Marys marriage Lily moves to Clonliffe Road to live with the Hoares. Elizabeth died on 4th October 1962 and was buried with her husband John in Glasnevin.

In the 1901 census Teresa was listed at her Uncle Christophers property at 27 North Earl Street as a visitor, 16 years of age and still a student. She married Richard Barnwall from The Leas, Swords Co. Dublin, on 30 th September 1919 at St. Andrews Church, Westland Row. They married only 2 months after Richards death (her father) and the marriage notice says no cards to reflect this. Their witnesses were John Barnwall and Alacoque Delany. Teresa and Richard had 3 children, Richard Oliver (born 30/8/1920), Maureen and Teresa (7/2/1925). Richard (Snr) died in April 1949 (check) and Teresa died 13th November 1970. Agnes Delany
Agnes was born on the 14th November 1886 in Killossery. At the time of the 1901 census she was 15 years old and still at school. I have been unable to find her in the 1911 census but believe that she would have been either training or actually nursing at this stage (possibly abroad?) A postcard from her sister May is dated (to be verified) 1904 addressed to her in the North Infirmary, Shandon, in Cork city which was a training hospital at the time.
It is unknown if Agnes remained nursing in Cork or returned to Dublin. Agnes never married and died in March 1953 at a nursing home in North Dublin city centre.

In 1912, on the 3rd of September she married Denis Delaney in the Pro Cathedral and she is the first of the girls to get married. Agnes, her sister is her bridesmaid. Unfortunately she does not list an occupation which might have verified the census data. Denis, originally from Co. Cork, drops the e in his name and becomes Delany! He was a commercial traveller (wine) with L & E Egan, and had been living in Dublin at 53 St. Patricks Road, Drumcondra.
May and Denis have four children; Agnes born 12th September 1913; Nora Josephine (Noni) born 19th March 1916; Patrick Denis on 4th June 1918; and Eileen born 17th August 1920. (See separate histories further on.) The family lived at 23 Eaton Square Monkstown. Agnes married in 1937; Noni in 1940; Eileen in 1949 and Patrick in 1950. Figure 27: 23 Eaton Square, Monkstown

Josephine Delany
Josie was born on the 5th March 1893 at Killossery. In the census of 1901 she was a schoolchild of 7, attending Rolestown National School. In 1911 she lived at 27 North Earl Street with her parents and some of her siblings and still at school. After the destruction of their home in the Rising in 1916 it would appear some of the girls remained living in Dublin and Josephine lived with her sisters Alacoque and Eileen in Merrion Row. She met Joseph Leckey, a tobacco salesman and courts him up to the time he leaves for America in 1917. Unfortunately, she died (of TB) on 17th March 1919 (her father Richard dies 4 months later in Rolestown). Joseph Leckey returns from America later that year in August. He courts Josies sister Alo and eventually married her in June 1923.
Josephines funeral mass was in St. Andrews Westland Row and she was buried in the family plot in Killossery.

After working in various hospitals including the Rotunda and Jervis Street, Paddy entered the army as a Surgeon Lieutenant. After about two years he left to work in hospitals in England - these included Stockport and Southport infirmaries which are both near Manchester. Later he joined the Royal Navy Reserve to be commissioned and sail on an aircraft carrier.
Figure 57: Paddy in Irish Army (middle) Almost immediately the ship (HMS Terrible) was gifted to Australia (to be renamed HMAS Sydney) so when hostilities ceased, Paddy was made an Australian and sailed to the new home port of Mossman, Sydney. For the next three years, Paddy enjoyed the idyllic life of accompanying the ship on worldwide goodwill tours. On one visit to New Zealand the ship entered what is often recognised as the most spectacular site in the world - the South Island's Milford Sound. The ship then sailed up the west coast to enter Wellington Harbour.
There he met Cecile 'Bid' Mack, a woman recuperating from a near fatal illness. After a most unusual engagement (as Paddy continued on his ocean sailing) they married in 1950. Paddy took shore duties in Sydney for two years but as Cecile (Paddy preferred this name) missed her home country, especially after the birth of the first child, Louise, in 1952, they returned to Wellington where a General Practice was found. Here Paddy worked until he turned 70 in 1987. In Wellington three more children were born. Page | 65
His working life was exceptionally busy - not only was he almost permanently 'on duty' and busy delivering babies (including his future daughter- in-law, Helen) but he was involved in medical politics. He held numerous executive posts in the local Medical Association but, more significantly, he worked to create the (later, Royal) New Zealand College of General Practitioners. This was a break from the 'mother' Royal Collegeto whom NZ doctors had to pay a subscription. For his work he accepted the Inaugural Presidency from HRH Prince Philip in 1974.
In his spare time Paddy played golf, enjoyed classical music and read a vast amount. He had a great love for the Catholic church and during his final decade or so he attended mass every day serving as alter boy at St Benedict's, Khandallah. This church overflowed for the funeral of this remarkable citizen (of four different countries) with many, many grateful patients and friends.

Consequently Cecile's early life was happy and carefree. Along with her two sisters, Kathryn and Claire, she attended a Catholic girls boarding school. They adored the likeable rogue brother, Arthur, who became a decorated RAF hero and who later managed to gamble away the family fortune.
Page | 67
After a somewhat enjoyable war with her name routinely 'mentioned in dispatches' (in the society pages), Cecile joined the NZ Army Medical Corps and travelled to Japan in early 1946 as a secretary/administrator with rank of 'nurse'. The Medical Corps was part of the post-war occupation forces. This was a tremendously interesting experience. The NZ army was based part of the time in Hiroshima only a matter of months after the first atomic bomb had been dropped.
Figure 61: Cecile during WWII On her return to NZ, Cecile showed signs of tuberculosis. During these pre- Streptomycin days she initially spent time in a sanatorium. Later, she had a major chest operation. The tuberculosis was cured but, combined with heavy cigarette smoking, Cecile never regained full health.
Soon after the surgery, Cecile met Paddy Delany. After a whirlwind romance (most of which was spent with Paddy on the ocean) they married and settled in Rose Bay, Sydney, where Paddy took up shore duties. Just over a year later, Louise the elder daughter was born. As Cecile missed her family - especially her sister, Kathryn, she negotiated with former Japan medical staff a position for her husband back in Wellington. Apart from short trips overseas she stayed in NZ for the rest of her life spending as much time as possible at a beach house in Raumati, up the coast. Louise was followed by Denis, Ann and Stephen - all born roughly two years apart. Cecile, in her prime, was a beautiful, glamorous, vivacious woman who was always the life of a party. She devoted herself to her children. Unfortunately over the last 20 years of her life her health declined resulting in tragic debilitation. Cecile passed away on 13/5/2001.
