This programme meets the professional outcomes that are identified by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as essential pre-requisites for registration as a nurse. The programme commences each September with an additional intake every February This is a three-year, full-time carefully integrated modular programme of theoretical and clinical study to provide structured development of professional skills. All modules are compulsory and fifty percent of the programme is delivered in a range of clinical practice settings. Within this field of nursing, you will experience the continuum of adult care. You will be taught the skills to assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate evidencebased care to promote the health and wellbeing of adults with acute and chronic conditions. Teaching is based on a social model and students will be taught to appreciate healthcare and the well being of the patient in the wider context. As such students should expect to be taught subjects such as anatomy and pathology, sociology and psychology, law and ethics, interpersonal skills and communication; all of which will be applied to nursing practice within an evidence based curriculum.

what Is adUlt nUrsInG?

Nursing students require the desire to help people. Individuals studying to be nurses have to be practical and know how to manage their time. They will develop effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team, but also as a leader. Adult nursing involves the physical and psychological care of people from early adulthood onwards, throughout the ageing process. Adult nursing is just as much about health promotion and wellbeing of the person as it is about sustenance and rehabilitation from acute or long term disease. With this in mind adult nursing places great emphasis on the uniqueness of the individual to promote optimum health and best quality of life - working in close partnership with patients. The role of the adult nurse is challenging, diverse and rewarding. Responding to patients physical and social needs, adult nurses develop strong working partnerships with colleagues in the multi-professional team both within the National Health Service and the independent sector; working in a variety of environments from large acute hospital settings to small rural communities. The programme combines academic learning with practical experience to ensure that students gain the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to become a professional nurse. The programme offers a framework of evidence based learning to enhance and support the qualities of the student, so they become effective and competent practitioners in a wide range of clinical settings. The teaching is student focused and the methods support problem-based learning aimed at developing not only the academic needs of the student but also the clinical, cultural and social aspects of nursing that reflect todays society. Students can therefore expect to fully participate in lectures, seminars, group work, presentations and debates and be taught by, amongst others, nurses, doctors, religious leaders and patients. Adult nursing students will also be taught about and exposed to care in relation to mental health, children, and mothers and the newborn.

The course is intense with frequent practical placements throughout each year, including assessments and exams; however the lecturers are very supportive and professional. Although the course is demanding and requires a great amount of dedication and hard work, it is extremely rewarding. For me the highlight of the course is the practical experience. I have been lucky to work in a variety of placements ranging from oncology and haematology to Swansea prison, and have secured a three month placement in Finland next year. The course has a great deal to offer and so, when I do complete my degree, I know I will be confident as I have gained a vast amount of experience in a variety of different clinical settings.

Students are able to experience care delivery in the NHS and the independent sector within the hospital environment and community setting. Students will rotate through different clinical specialities to ensure they have exposure to all the varying aspects of adult nursing and, in year three, will have a choice of clinical areas to support their individual learning.

Nursing students require the desire to help people. Individuals studying to be nurses have to be practical and know how to manage their time. Childrens nurses work as part of a multidisciplinary team and work closely with specialist nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, play specialists, social workers and others to provide and coordinate care of the child or young person and their family. Individuals who pursue this career should be able to communicate well with both children and their families, work as part of a team and demonstrate a non-judgemental and caring approach towards families from a wide range of backgrounds. Childrens nursing focuses on the child as a dynamic developing individual, and makes a difference to the care experience of the child/ young person, including teaching and supporting parents to care collaboratively for the child as appropriate. The working environment would involve caring for children/young people in hospitals, local health centres, schools and in their own homes.

These will include general medical and surgical wards as well as other specialist areas including orthopaedics, burns and plastics, neurology and care of the neonate.

My highlight whilst studying at Swansea was knowing that while on placement I made a difference to the children, young people and their families. Our child branch group was small and I welcomed the opportunity to develop strong bonds with other student nurses - which meant we supported each other through the highs and lows. I would definitely recommend Swansea University; there are lots of societies you can get involved with and good facilities. If you chose nursing I can vouch that you will be given the best quality of teaching, support and experience to help you be the best nurse you can be. The philosophy of care I have been taught at Swansea will stay with me throughout my career. Good luck, it is well worth the effort! Hopefully I will see some of you in the near future as registered staff nurses!

what Is a CardIaC PhysIoloGIst?

Cardiac Physiologists work with those suspected or known to have heart disease. Their work combines patient assessment and specialist equipment to obtain diagnostic data about heart structure and function. The Cardiac Physiologist interprets data to make an accurate diagnosis and formulates reports that are reviewed by the health care team to enable appropriate management of the patient. Patients may be unwell at the time of the test, requiring prompt diagnosis and treatment. Good Cardiac Physiologists can multi-task, problem solve, and make sound decisions in a time-pressured environment. Work is often undertaken as part of a multi-disciplinary team with doctors, nurses and radiographers; the ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds is important. Prospective applicants are expected to fully investigate the profession and typical investigations. Evidence of this will be sought during the selection process.

Going on placement doesnt just allow you to practice what you learn but it also gives you needed experience, as well as increasing your desire to learn about new things you come in contact with. It makes learning so much easier when there is an immediate practical need to remember and apply information. The staff are fantastic - and care about our wellbeing as well as our academic performance. Being a student at Swansea is exactly what you want it to be. As a Medical Physics Technologist you will play a central role in todays technologically sophisticated health care system. You will work within a multi-disciplinary team, alongside doctors and other healthcare professionals, to deliver the most advanced techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of disease utilising isotopes and radiation in its various forms. Most clinical diagnostic, and many therapeutic, procedures involve physics-based techniques including the use of ionizing radiation. Radiotherapy requires the precise delivery of radiation to treat tumours without harming nearby healthy tissue. In Nuclear Medicine, radioisotopes are used to image a variety of organs and compartments in the human body, for example lung perfusion and ventilation studies or thyroid function tests. Students will choose which speciality they wish to follow, and graduate with a Healthcare Science BSc in either nuclear medicine or radiotherapy. Applicants are advised to visit a hospital medical physics department to familiarise themselves with the roles and typical daily activities of Medical Physics Technologists.

Swansea University is good because it has links with local hospitals and organises placements throughout the course. It is a different experience being a student in Medical Physics Technology than doing one of the more traditional degree subjects, as you spend a lot of time away from University on placements in hospitals. But given the radioactive nature of Medical Physics Technology it is impossible to practice all the clinical aspects of the job on the University campus. Its exciting and interesting that our course involves something as dangerous as radioactivity! Being a small department, there is a great sense of community between the students on the course.

Respiratory Physiologists work with patients suspected or known to have disease of the respiratory system. The day-to-day work of a Respiratory Physiologist includes the use of a variety of specialist equipment to obtain diagnostic data about respiratory structures and their function. The Respiratory Physiologist will interpret the data, which will be used by the healthcare team to inform diagnosis and direct therapy. Respiratory Physiologists work directly with patients to deliver diagnostic tests of breathing and treatment for lung disease. They are also involved in exercise testing, sleep studies and delivery of ventilation to patients on the wards and at home. The work of a Respiratory Physiologist must be reliable and accurate as patients lives often depend on their skills. Measurements made typically include: lung volumes and forced expiratory flows, respiratory gas exchange, blood gases, response to treatment, breathing during sleep, allergy testing and physiological responses to exercise. Working in partnership with doctors, nurses and other health care professionals, Respiratory Physiologists use a variety of equipment and techniques to measure and monitor patients respiratory function. Students will study 10 to 11 modules each year that cover six distinct areas of study. There is scope in the second and third years for students to choose some elective modules (e.g. Genetics in the Medical School).

what Is medICal sCIenCes and hUmanItIes?

Medical Sciences and Humanities (MeSH) explores both the scientific and human sides of medicine and healthcare. This innovative, interdisciplinary degree, developed in conjunction with the College of Medicine at Swansea University, allows you to study the broad spectrum of subjects encompassing both the science and the art of medicine. Designed as an ideal platform for graduate entry into medicine (or disciplines allied to medicine) the degree embodies the modern bio-psycho-social view of health and illness and aims to foster a broad and deep understanding of medicine and healthcare in all the ways that we experience them as a society. You will study medicine and healthcare as a body of technical, scientific knowledge, but also as knowledge made by and applied to human beings. The course therefore includes perspectives from the medical sciences, the human sciences, and the arts and humanities, integrating a wide range of relevant subjects including: anatomy and physiology, the methodology of evidence-based medicine, mathematics, sociology, public health, health law and practice, economics, medical ethics and philosophy, medical history, and literature.

BIoloGICal sCIenCes - The Biological Sciences modules explore how knowledge of biological systems at the molecular, cellular and organismal levels underpins clinical medicine. The Physical Sciences modules examine fundamental physico-chemical principles of human systems. ClInICal sCIenCes - The Clinical Sciences modules focus on the key study and learning skills of medicine and healthcare, in particular the essential critical information analysis of evidence-based-medicine, the issues surrounding implementation of public health interventions, and the integration of theoretical and practical knowledge in patient interactions, via reflective clinical observation.
of Medicine modules explore ethical and conceptual issues that shape the nature and goals of medicine, interrogating problems of life and death, genetic ethics, multiple personality disorder, and conceptions of mental illness.
I chose the BSc in Medical Sciences and Humanities (MeSH) because it provides a very good foundation for Graduate Entry Medicine. MeSH is a fantastic course that includes a diverse range of subjects that are related to modern medicine. It aims to develop an in-depth understanding into the importance of patient-centred care through its bio-psycho-social understanding of health. I particularly enjoyed the placements in year three which helped me understand the importance of good communication and listening skills for effective decision making. All of the lecturers on this course are very supportive and adapt the programme to meet your needs; I received a lot of encouragement which motivated me and helped me achieve my goals. Studying this course is the best thing I have ever done! Swansea University offers a high standard of teaching and a warm and welcoming atmosphere - I would definitely recommend Swansea University to other students! Please see website for more MeSH profiles.

You will be interested in the natural sciences and how they apply to the human body. However, you will also be curious about how we experience health and illness, and why that might also be central to modern conceptions of medicine and healthcare. You should also be fascinated by the way that medical knowledge is made and applied, and in understanding medicine as a feature of our society and culture. As well as studying anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and other medical sciences, you will also address questions such as: how did doctors get the power to tell us how to eat, drink, and think; how did we get a National Health Service, and how does it work; what is the role of medicine in controversial areas like euthanasia and suicide prevention?

soCIal sCIenCes and medICIne - The Social Sciences and Medicine modules are comprised of economic, sociological and psychological dimensions that inform the provision and experience of medicine and healthcare.
Medicine modules explore how intellectual developments are embedded in particular socio-economic contexts, and how basic conceptions of medicine and society themselves have evolved symbiotically, over time. The modules facilitate a critical view of the making of medical theory, practice, professionalisation, and the role of medicine in the creation of modern society since 1500.

Nursing students require the desire to help people. Individuals studying to be nurses have to be practical and know how to manage their time. They will develop effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team, but also as a leader. Mental health nurses work as part of a multidisciplinary team and work closely with GPs, psychiatrists, social workers and others to coordinate care. Individuals who pursue this career must be able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team. Student nurses will experience clinical placements in both hospitals and community settings. Placements may be within the NHS or private sector. The programme will develop the novice student nurse into a competent practitioner who can respond and adapt to a complex and rapidly changing healthcare environment.

My highlight has been the wealth of opportunities that have come my way due to being a student. The University has so many links with other services and this has given me the opportunity to go places and do things that would otherwise not be possible. For example, as a student I asked to go on day placement to a pharmacy; which I thought was a unique experience. I find it exciting that I never know, until about four weeks before, where I will be on placement next. Each learning experience is different. what do yoU stUdy?

These programmes have a modular structure, allowing for breadth and depth in knowledge and development of skills. The course is 50% practice and 50% theory. The course is comprised of blocks of study and practice. Teaching will take place through lectures and seminars, discussion groups, role play and simulation exercises. The course develops the students creativity and originality of expression, and their ability to analyse and make use of research. In addition students are taught specific skills of evaluating and critiquing research studies, so that they can become thoughtful and critical users of research in practice. The learning environment is supportive and the student is expected to grow in confidence and selfawareness, to take responsibility for their personal and professional development. The student then emerges into the practice arena as a life-long learner; confident, competent and accountable for their own practice as a midwife, meeting the challenges of contemporary practice.

what Is mIdwIfery?
Midwives are highly skilled professionals who have the clinical expertise and interpersonal skills to ensure optimum physical and emotional well-being during womens pregnancies, childbirth and early parenthood. Midwives work towards providing a service which is effective and satisfying for women and their families. Many women are cared for exclusively by midwives throughout their pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period. Midwifery is therefore a very responsible career, but it has incredible rewards to offset the dedication required. Midwifery knowledge is extensive and includes aspects of bioscience, sociology, psychology, law, politics, social policy and ethics. Both human and scientific concepts are incorporated into a challenging and stimulating learning experience. The programme is designed to build upon an individuals strengths so that students become professional and motivated practitioners. Students develop a heightened level of selfawareness and sensitivity towards women and families throughout the programme. The Midwifery and Reproductive Health team offers a broad range of experience and subject interest. In partnership with other disciplines our well established research culture supports evidence based practice. Many members of the team are engaged in doctoral study themselves which means we are research active and pass these skills on to our students.

PointS to note
This course starts before the normal university term.

Initially, Becci was a little daunted about studying for the midwifery degree, however she was pleasantly surprised to find that the combination of theory and practical experience really suited her. She said: At 38 and with two small children aged six and seven I was really worried about how I would cope with the course. I have been pleased to find that it has all been manageable and my position is not uncommon amongst midwifery students. The degree is a great combination of placement and academic study, with some home study days too, which suits me really well. It was great getting involved in clinical practice right at the beginning of the course, I felt engaged very quickly and it brought everything we were doing in the classroom to life. My mentors have been really supportive and encouraged me to fully participate in everything they do. Although I have come to Midwifery late I feel really lucky to have found a career I feel passionate about and very motivated by.

The midwifes work is all about people. To be interested in this profession you would need to be seeking an opportunity to work with women and their families in both the community and hospital settings. Any work with the public can often be challenging and demanding, and this is particularly so in midwifery, as pregnancy and childbirth can be a very anxious and emotional time. Therefore subject areas of interest include psychology, sociology and communication skills, as well as bioscience. Midwifery is physically demanding and the work essentially practical, which should also be taken into account when considering this career path.

Career ProsPeCts
Promotion prospects in midwifery are very good, with midwives commonly achieving Band 6 grading (Agenda for Change) after one year of continuous practice as a midwife in the NHS. Our Midwifery qualification is highly valued in other countries, and is likely to contribute to a qualifiers ability to work abroad, e.g. in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. There may also be opportunities for short international/ national placements during the third year of the programme. There are several role dimensions in midwifery, including working independently, working in the community or in hospitals and birth centres. Midwives also often take up specialist roles in areas such as teenage pregnancy, substance misuse, breast feeding, sexual health, high risk care, antenatal education, antenatal screening and homebirth. Midwives also undertake research, write journal papers and books, they may also work in teaching or in management. Opportunities exist at the College of Human and Health Sciences for qualified midwives to further develop skills in relation to practice, management, research and education. We also offer BSc Contraception and Sexual Health Practice and MSc Healthcare Management and other relevant practice based learning subjects.

The starting salary is at Band 5 and approximately 20,700. Midwives progress to Band 6 after one year of qualifying and on condition that they have achieved the appropriate level of competence. This Band begins at 24,000 with annual increments. Further progression on the Agenda for Change pay scale depends upon job opportunities, as well as individual ability and talent.

what Is osteoPathy?
The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC) defines osteopathy as a manner of detecting, treating and preventing conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, namely muscles, ligaments, nerves and joints, in a holistic and scientifically based way. When the body is balanced and efficient, just like a well tuned engine, it will function with the minimum of wear and tear, leaving more energy for living. Osteopathy is a well recognised and evidence based profession that encompasses a holistic and life-span approach to the provision of diagnostic assessment and rehabilitation. The mainstay of osteopathic involvement is based upon gentle manipulative therapy that aims to reduce pain whilst improving mobility, without the application of pharmacological or surgical intervention. Additionally, all treatment programmes will have diet and exercise components included. The common conditions treated by an osteopath are arthritis, back pain, chronic pain, sports and work related injuries. The aim of osteopathy is to provide effective health care by promoting active recovery to enhance a persons quality of life. Effective osteopathic diagnosis, assessment and treatment require a holistic, person centred approach that demands the application of higher level knowledge, understanding and clinical osteopathic skills. This degree will: n Give you the skills and competences necessary to become a registered Osteopath n Develop self confidence and apply knowledge for practice within a safe environment n Give you education and clinical experience within the associated osteopathic clinics n Promote evidence based practice, personal and professional development as well as an introduction to business management to prepare you for private practice

PlaCements
Experience of clinical practice is gained on placements with midwives working throughout South and West Wales in community based teams, midwifery led birth centres and hospital maternity units. These are usually arranged as near to the students place of residence as possible. However in order to experience a wide variety of placements, all students will be expected to travel within west Wales at different stages of the programme. This may involve a placement away from the students place of residence when bed and breakfast accommodation will be provided. This experience is very valuable and contributes to the students CV for future employment.

The Psychology Department at Swansea was the first in the UK to be awarded the highest (Excellent) rating by the Higher Education Funding Council for the quality of its teaching and learning environment. Staff of the Department have a broad range of research interests and the undergraduate course is broad-based and eclectic, thus providing a sound education in Psychology.

The module covers the major theories and empirical issues in social and developmental psychology. The social psychology component covers core topics such as: attitudes; attributions; conformity and obedience; person perception; interpersonal attraction; stereotypes; prejudice and discrimination. The development psychology component addresses issues such as: infancy and early social development and theories of cognitive development in infancy and childhood.

The module provides students with the essential skills required for the psychology degree. Key areas include: Navigating the library; how to use information systems and digital gateways to access research publications; referencing APA style. Other skills taught include: writing with your own voice; note taking, paraphrasing and acknowledging sources. Essay writing skills and how to write psychology assignments to maximize your performance will also be taught. Basic Excel skills will be introduced including presenting and organizing data. The module aims to help students communicate ideas, develop oral presentation skills and finally how to use feedback effectively. In Level two students follow up in greater depth the topics pursued in Level one, along with other topics. Students take compulsory modules in Memory, Attention and Learning; Perception, Thinking and Reasoning; Social Psychology; Language and Lifespan Development; Brain and Behaviour; Individual Differences; Experimental Methods and Statistics. In Level three students are allowed to select five modules from an extensive list of optional modules. The modules may vary slightly from year to year. A compulsory substantial research project is also undertaken. Teaching methods within the Department are all lecture based, small group work (tutorials), laboratory based, project and assignment based. You will attend a series of practical classes in Levels one and two and will learn to design, plan and carry out experiments, write practical reports and carry out statistical analyses in preparation for the Level three project. Assessment consists of multiple choice questionnaires, course essays, written reports about experimental work that students carry out and written examinations.

Career ProsPeCts
This degree alone does not enable people to practice as Psychologists. People who work as Psychologists will have undergone postgraduate training in their specialist field of applied work. Therefore, a further two or three years postgraduate study on a Masters or Doctoral course is necessary before qualifying. The careers for which a Psychology Degree is a requisite are: Clinical Psychology; Educational Psychology; Occupational Psychology; Forensic (or criminal and legal) Psychology; Research Psychology; Teachers of Psychology; Health Psychology; and Counselling Psychology. The Psychology Degree also provides a good basis for PGCE training and a career in teaching. There are also a number of careers that require graduates from any discipline. Psychology graduates tend to be highly numerate and possess high-quality essay writing and critical analysis skills. Therefore, with this unique combination of transferable and valuable attributes, psychology graduates have much to offer to a variety of prospective employers.

Social Policy involves studying peoples wellbeing and welfare, as well as understanding how social relations and systems can contribute to meeting these needs. When studying Social Policy you will find the subject matter in every aspect of your daily life - how families, friends and neighbours support each other; how cities or regions organise welfare provision such as schools and hospitals; how societies respond in different ways to issues of poverty and unemployment. The subject also investigates the leading social issues and problems of the day, especially in areas such as health, housing, the community environment, gender, family, child and youth wellbeing, and the issues raised by the ageing of our populations. As a field of critical social enquiry, social policy is also concerned with understanding how societies respond to peoples social needs. For example, what impact will child benefit cuts have on families? Our degree schemes prepare students for a rapidly changing world in which social policies are increasingly affected by our place in the global economy, our identity as a member state of the European Union and as citizens of devolved administrations in Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland.

The Social Policy programme offers a wide range of modules including: historical and contemporary developments to welfare provisions in the UK; health, housing, disability, gender and social security policies; comparative approaches to social policy within the European Union and beyond; theoretical issues about the principles and values underpinning policies and how social policies and approaches to welfare have been shaped by different models of social policy throughout the centuries; and how in todays society population ageing is shaping social policy agendas in Wales and beyond . Social Policy degree schemes combine training in critical analysis and research methods with the study of contemporary issues of our wellbeing and welfare. You can study Social Policy as i) a Single Honours subject (BSc Social Policy) ii) a Joint Honours subject in combination with one other Social Science subject: n BScEcon Economics and Social Policy LL41 n BA Joint Honours Social History and Social Policy LV43 n BA Politics and Social Policy LL42 n BSc Criminology and Social Policy MLF4 Students will benefit from a well structured and wellsupported programme of study. The degree course consists of lectures, workshops, tutorials, surgeries, and when possible professionals, practitioners and well-known academics appear as guest lecturers. Assessment is based on coursework including essays, projects and reviews, with timed assessments or examinations following some modules. Social Policy staff offer opportunities for one-to-one support on academic matters during the working week and students are assigned a personal tutor. human needs and citizenship rights and responsibilities. It then considers key areas of the welfare system, including education, health, crime and criminal justice and the role of the family in welfare provision. Welfare Provisions: Our Victorian Legacy This module aims to provide students with an introduction to the development of social policy in Britain from the 1600s to the beginning of the twentieth century. It will examine the responses of governments to social problems of the time, and to trace the foundations upon which the British welfare state was built. Introduction to Social Policy - the Modern Era This module provides a critical examination of developments to the welfare state in Britain from the pre- and post-Second World War periods right up to the most recent transformations under the new coalition government. Concepts, Ideas and Ideologies in Social Policy: An Introduction Social Policy draws on the intellectual traditions of the political and philosophical sciences as a basis for its approach to understanding topics such as equality, fairness, social justice, social citizenship, freedom or liberalism. These concepts are important when tracing the key ideas and principles which have influenced both past and current developments of welfare provisions in the UK, or when thinking critically about why we have needed policy and legislation to ensure equality of treatment for people of various social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. By developing a sound understanding of these topics, students will be better equipped to develop informed responses to some of the key challenges facing governments today and which are explored in more depth through other Social Policy modules: should governments promote equality of access to higher education by subsidising fees for all? Now that we are living in a global village, should we be thinking about welfare needs from a global citizenship perspective? Is it fair that some people earn high incomes but still receive child benefit? Are policy-makers today still influenced by neoliberal values about the role that market forces should take in meeting social needs? Introduction to the Criminal Justice System This module deals with the everyday work of the criminal justice system and its history and development. It describes the roles of the agencies that make up the system and of politicians, agencies and others in the formulation of criminal justice policy. Its main focus is on how the system deals with offenders and it also deals with services to victims of crime. n Criminology, Crime and Society This module introduces the basic concepts in criminology such as how the study of crime began; the prevalence of crime and how it is measured; explanations of crime causation; and patterns of crime amongst different groups in society. n Study Skills in Criminology and Social policy This module introduces students to the basic research and essay writing skills required when studying Criminology and Social Policy in Higher Education. A mixture of lecturer-led and independent learning methods will address topics such as efficient use of library and information & careers services, active reading and note-taking, accurate referencing, understanding and benefiting from assessment, effective group working and presentation skills, developing skills in critical evaluation and higherorder learning, and maximising the learning benefits of reflection and self-evaluation.

Career ProsPeCts
Social Policy is a thought-provoking subject that is very relevant to employment in a wide variety of work settings. A survey of graduates has shown that Social Policy career destinations can be divided into three main groups: first, a wide variety of jobs in the public and voluntary sectors for example, in housing management, in the health service, in local government, voluntary organisations, education and research; second, professional social work or other personal social services work; and third, private sector employment in retailing, marketing or personnel management. About 85% of social policy graduates from Swansea University are employed in graduate level jobs. So if you choose our Social Policy undergraduate degree, you will be well equipped to find employment in areas such as the public service sector (local and national-level government organisations); the not-for-profit sector such as charities or voluntary organisations; international aid and development work; social research and marketing; and the teaching professions in further or higher education.

level 2 and 3 modUles

what Is a soCIal worker?

Social Work is about change and human growth through supporting the social care and welfare needs of individuals, groups and local communities. Human rights and social justice are two key principles which social workers seek to protect and uphold. Social workers work with individuals and families in vulnerable circumstances to help improve outcomes in their lives. This may be helping to protect people from harm or abuse or supporting people to live independently. Social workers support people, act as advocates and direct people to the services they may require. Social workers often work in multidisciplinary teams alongside health and education professionals. Social Work is an international profession which promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well-being. Utilising theories of human behaviour and social systems, Social Work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work (International Federation of Social Workers, 2001) In Wales, social workers, and Social Work students, have to be registered with the Care Council for Wales (www.ccwales.org.uk) and adhere to a professional code of practice. This ensures that people using social work services - or service users as they are also known - can have faith in the professionals entrusted to work with them. Social workers work with a variety of people including: n n n n n n n n n Older people in vulnerable circumstances Children with disabilities Young people with mental health problems Young offenders Adults with learning disabilities People with alcohol or other addictions Refugees and asylum seekers People who are socially excluded Children in need or in care and adoption settings

This degree has been developed to prepare students for employment as professionally qualified social workers and lays the foundation for their continuing professional development. It reflects the key themes of contemporary social work in Wales. Social Work has been an established course at Swansea for many years and combines a commitment to both academic excellence and practical learning. There are strong links between the Department and social services agencies in south and west Wales, and in local authority and voluntary sectors.

Kate enjoyed the four year part-time degree, and appreciated the balance between theoretical and practical experience. I had the opportunity to try a variety of placements (in both adult and childrens services, and statutory and voluntary sectors), which is great when you are exploring which avenue to take in practice later on. I found my final year the most rewarding. Being part of a family therapy team in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team during my final placement was a wonderful learning experience.
